Richard ‘Rich’ Hainley, 69, Newmanstown, Army vet, Gooding, Simpson and Mackes retiree

Richard “Rich” Hainley, 69, of Newmanstown, passed away Friday, Jan. 15, 2016, at home.

He was born in Millcreek Township to the late Claude S. and Bernetha A. (Brubaker) Hainley.

Rich was the strongest, most selfless man ever known. A husband, father, pap, son, brother, and friend. As was his theme in life, “It is what it is,” he learned early that challenges will come, so you better be ready to deal with them. He found himself having to take care of his mother at an early age. He fondly recalled being so young he had to stand on a chair to cook for her.

Rich met the love of his life, Marion L. (Leed), and they married in June of 1969. Together they raised three children. He never waivered in his responsibilities of having a family, and worked tirelessly to insure their needs were met. Along the way he instilled core values of working hard and being honest. Childhood included never-ending lessons on the proper method of folding just about anything. Every summer many fights were had over who would sit with Pap on the roller coaster.

Rich was a simple man who enjoyed simple things including nature, gardening, and reading as his favorite past times. He was looking forward to his retirement, when in 2011 he learned he would have to face his toughest challenge yet. As with everything else, he hit it head on with unbelievable strength and courage, being thankful for his life and never once complaining.

He was a member of the Assembly of God Church. He enjoyed motorcycling, gathering wild mushrooms, hunting, fishing, watching wrestling, and doing sudoku puzzles. He was also a fan of NASCAR and John Deere tractors, and had a very strong faith.

Rich was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Vietnam era. After 47 years of service for Gooding, Simpson, and Mackes in Ephrata, he retired in 2012.

In addition to his wife, Rich is survived by two daughters: Melissa F., wife of Jeffrey Jacobs of Exeter; Michelle L., wife of Arthur Guistwite Jr. of Newmanstown; a son: Richard A. Hainley, companion of Julie Sechrist, of Wernersville; four grandchildren: Austin, Alexa, Jon, and Jarrett; two sisters; and a brother.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson: Arthur Richard Guistwite; a brother: Robert Hainley; and a sister: Catherine Hainley.

We will go forward with courage and strength, because that’s what you asked us to do. We will work hard and live honestly, because that’s what you did. We will live simply and be happy, because that’s what you would want.

Services were held Jan. 21 at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Joel Hainley officiating. Interment was in Schaefferstown Cemetery, with military honors accorded.

Memorial contributions in Rich’s memory may be made to Pennsylvania Wildlife Federation, 2426 N. Second St., Harrisburg, PA 17110.

Arrangements by Roseboro Stradling Funeral and Cremation Services Inc., Denver. Online condolences can be given at roseborostradling.com.

Betty may have been best known for her genuine smile and her exceptional love for people. She was able to make anyone feel loved, accepted, and a part of the family. She cared about the little details of our lives and would listen and love as only a mother could. She was the heart of our family and words cannot describe how much she will be missed. Over the years Betty was a homemaker and devoted her life to raising her children. Betty’s greatest love in life was her children and her grandchildren, of whom she was so proud. Betty had a passion for reading, and was known for her well organized yard sales. She also enjoyed weekend trips to Ohio with her husband.

She is survived by her three children: Michael A. Sensenig of Denver; Mark A., husband of Karen (Martin) Sensenig of Ephrata; Jennifer L., wife of Rick Erkinger, of Denver: six grandchildren: Dylan, Riley, Erica, Ethan, Carleigh and Evan; three brothers: Daniel Moyer Jr. of Ephrata, Edwin Sweigart of Akron, and Ronald Moyer of Ephrata; and a sister: Irene, wife of Henry Weaver, of Reinholds.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother: Leon Moyer.

A viewing will be held Thursday, Jan. 28, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.; and on Friday, Jan. 29, from 9 to 10 a.m., at the Reamstown Church of God, 400 Pfautz Hill Road, Stevens; followed by her funeral service at 10 a.m., with Reverends John Fry, Dwayne Hoover and Arthur Karick officiating. Interment will take place in the Hahnstown United Zion Cemetery.
