Pamela A. Levan, 54, Ephrata native, Excentia program member, enjoyed walks, dining out

Pamela A. Levan, 54, of Lancaster, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015, at her residence.

She was born in Ephrata to the late Clarence Levan and Carol (Ruffner) Levan.

She was a member of the Excentia program where she would go to spend time with her peers, loved going out to eat and enjoyed going for walks with her dad.

In addition to her mother, Pamela is survived by brother: Dennis L., husband of Robin (Rhoads) Levan, of Landisville. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Services were held Dec. 12 at Stradling Funeral Home, Ephrata, with Rev. Walter Carter officiating. Interment took place in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be made to Excentia, 1810 Rohrerstown Road, Lancaster, PA 17601.

Mary C. Huesken, 56, Ephrata, cellist, Exeter music teacher, enjoyed scrapbooking

Mary C. Huesken, 56, of Ephrata, passed away at LifeCare Hospital of West Chester Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015.

She was the wife of Dr. Gerald G. Huesken. She was born in Darby, daughter of Allen J. and Helen C. Fricker Brennan, of Springfield.

She was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Ephrata, where she was involved in the music ministry.

She graduated from Susquehanna University in 1980, with a bachelor of music education. She worked most recently as an elementary music teacher at Exeter Township School District, Berks County. She also was employed in the Wyomissing Area and Solanco school districts. Mary played cello for the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for more than 25 years. She played also with the Camerata String Quartet and the Allegro Chamber Orchestra. Mary loved music, the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles, knitting, crafts, scrapbooking, her family, and her cat Thomas.

Surviving besides her husband and parents are two children: Gerald G., husband of Emily Evans Huesken, of Marietta; Kristy Huesken of Lancaster; granddaughter: Olivia Huesken; three siblings: Joseph, husband of Judy Brennan, of Hainesport, N.J.; Dr. Kathleen Agren of Morton; Dr. Brian Brennan, husband of Sarah Spratt, of Arlington, Mass.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Dec. 14 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Ephrata. Interment took place at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield.

Larry A. Stick, 67, Adamstown, Vietnam vet, brick mason, Hershey Bears fan, volunteer

Larry A. Stick, 67, Adamstown, died accidentally at home Dec. 9, 2015.

Born in West Reading, a son of the late Richard and Betty (Goshert) Stick, he was a loving, supportive husband of 42 years to Lori F. (Diehl) Stick.

A 1966 Cocalico High School graduate, Larry honorably served his country in the Army receiving several awards. He had a tour of duty as a helicopter door gunner in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division. A brick mason for more than 40 years, he was employed the past 21 years with Ciatto Construction, Reading. His skills held him in great demand with family and friends.

Larry was an avid Hershey Bears fan. He recently purchased a Corvette convertible, his dream car, and loved driving top down on Sunday afternoons; but most of all, he cherished his family, supporting his daughters through many life events. A life member of Reinholds VFW, he was also an Adamstown Recreation Board volunteer.

Surviving is his wife; daughters: Amanda (Josh) Haffly, Hershey; Emily (Eric) Trissel, Wernersville; grandchildren: Connor and Madeline Haffly; Ethan, Elijah, and Eleanor Trissel; and sisters: Pat (George) Sterner, Mohnton; and Sandy (Jim) Porter, Bartow, Fla.

A celebration of Larry’s life was held Dec. 14 at Good Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, Reamstown, with Pastor Donna M. House officiating.

Aneissa D. Ward, 36, Holtwood, mother of four, worked for Lancaster Rec Center

Aneissa D. Ward, 36, of Holtwood, passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, at her residence.

She was born in Lancaster to Skip and Deborah (Watts) Lefley, of Ephrata; and was the wife of Timothy S. Ward.

Aneissa was a 1998 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School, worked for the Lancaster Rec Center at McCaskey High School in the daycare center, enjoyed reading and spending time with her children.

In addition to her parents and husband, Aneissa is survived by four children: Kailey, Julia, Emilie and Kimberly Ward; a brother: Anthony Lefley of Ephrata; her father and mother-in-law: Terry and Beverly Ward of Holtwood; maternal grandmother: Betty Watts of Manheim; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, Dec. 23, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata, followed by a gathering to celebrate Aneissa’s life, at 2 p.m. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Helen H. Coleman, 87, of Manheim, formerly of Stevens, passed away Dec. 16 at Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community. She was born in Ephrata to the late Elmer and Sallie (Heffley) Gehman. Services will be private.

Helen R. Droney, 58, of New Providence, passed away Dec. 10. Helen had worked in years past at Burger King on Lincoln Highway. She had a love for animals, enjoyed classic country music, and her greatest joy was her grandchildren. Her son, Timothy, married to Teresa Droney, resides in Ephrata.

Helen E. (Yoh) Steffy, 92, Reinholds, Bollman Hat retiree, volunteer Easter candy maker

Helen E. (Yoh) Steffy, 92, of Reinholds, passed away Monday, Dec. 14, 2015, at Berks Heim Nursing and Rehabilitation, Leesport.

She was born in Spring Township to the late James and Lizzie (Fry) Yoh, and was the wife of the late John S. Steffy, who passed away May 12, 2005.

She was a member of the Vinemont Community Lutheran Church, Reinholds; the Cocalico Senior Center; and she volunteered making Easter candy for the Vinemont Fire Company Auxiliary. She especially enjoyed being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and being a homemaker.

A 1941 graduate of Wilson High School she was employed for many years at Bollman’s Hat Factory in Adamstown. After retiring from Bollman’s, she worked in the Weaver’s market party trays department.

Helen is survived by five children: John S. Steffy Jr. of Shillington; Donald R., husband of Lorrie (Kramer) Steffy, of Reinholds; Barbara Ann Sweigart of Denver; Robert L., husband of Donna C. (Woods) Steffy, of Denver; and Jeffrey S., husband of Debbie L. (Bickel) Steffy, of Lincoln Park; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter: Erika Lynn Sweigart; and three sisters: Bertha Reinhold, Sarah Winters, and Minnie Degler.

Services were held Dec. 19 at Vinemont Community Lutheran Church, Reinholds, with Pastor Albera B. Hellemo officiating. Interment took place in the Pleasant View Cemetery.

Mary E. Brossman, 93, Ephrata, ECH, RCA worker, Eucharistic Minister at OMPH

Mary E. Brossman, 93, of Ephrata, and formerly of Lebanon, passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015, at Ephrata Manor.

Mary’s husband, the late John S. Brossman, passed away Feb. 16, 2004. Born in Lebanon, Mary was a daughter of the late Fred and Irene (Newmaster) Arnold.

A member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Ephrata, Mary served as a eucharistic minister for more than 25 years and belonged to the Legion of Mary. She worked for 14 years at the former RCA in Lancaster and 10 years at the Ephrata Community Hospital. Mary also previously worked at the former Montgomery Ward as store manager and at Penn Corner in Lebanon.

Mary is survived by one granddaughter: Samantha, wife of Douglas Hall; one great-granddaughter: Elizabeth Hall; two great-grandsons: Jacob Hall and Samuel Hall, all of Shrewsbury; two sisters: Pauline, wife of Dave Groff; and Gere, wife of Ed Albert; two brothers: Jack Arnold, husband of Kathy, and Joe Arnold; all of Lebanon,.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by her daughter: Joni Sage; one sister: Barbara Ann Rodney; and two brothers: Richard and Fritz Arnold.

Services were held Dec. 22 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, Ephrata. She was interred at Cedar Hill Cemetery Ephrata.

Helen G. Knerr, 96, Denver school secretary, active at Faith Lutheran, ECH volunteer

Helen G. Knerr, 96, of Denver, passed away Monday, Dec. 14, 2015, at Maple Farm in Akron.

She was born in Reinholds to the late George and Nettie (Huntzinger) Gensemer, and was the wife of the late W. Luther Knerr, who died in 1980.

She was a member of Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was very active with church council and Sunday School. She also volunteered at Ephrata hospital. She loved traveling, gardening, reading, going on bus trips, and antiquing.

Helen attended the McCann’s School of Business. She was the first secretary to the superintendent for the Denver School, which later became Cocalico School District.

Helen is survived by two daughters: Christine K., wife of the late Henry Buffington; and Diane K. Schantz; four grandchildren: Eric and Vicki Schweitzer, Stephen and Troy Schantz; and six great-grandchildren: Erika, Kyle, Taylor, Sienna, Owen, and Hunter.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and four brothers.

Services were held Dec. 21 at Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church, Denver, with Pastor Joseph Veres officiating. Interment followed in the Fairview Cemetery.

William R. Kirkner Sr., 69, Stevens, Korea and Vietnam vet, BF Goodrich retiree, loved computers

William R. Kirkner Sr., 69, of Stevens, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015, at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in Philadelphia to the late Elmer and Genelle (Fetterman) Kirkner, and was the husband of Mary Jane (Stewart) Kirkner, with whom he shared 34 years of marriage on Dec. 4.

William was a member of Reinholds VFW Post 6759, and the New Holland American Legion Post 662. He loved computers, ham radio, and camping; and enjoyed his children and grandchildren.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served two tours in Korea and two tours in the Vietnam era. William retired from the BF Goodrich Tire Co.

In addition to his wife, William is survived by four children: Edward G. Grain of Pottstown; Kevin Grain of Shillington; Rebecca Ann, wife of Michael Altemus, of Spring City; and Lisa Ann Borzumati of West Lawn; three grandchildren: Danielle, wife of Jeffrey Huber, of Shillington; Jordan Era of Royersford; and Sierra Huff of Spring City; and a great-grandson: Chase Huber.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: William R. Kirkner Jr.; a granddaughter: Kaitlyn Marie Grain; and a brother: Louis “Skip” Lupold.

Services were held Dec. 21 at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Timothy L. Craven officiating. Interment was in the Limerick Garden of Memories, Limerick.

Luke M. Leaman, 85, Ephrata, Sauder Chevrolet service manager, enjoyed hunting

Luke M. Leaman, 85, of Ephrata, formerly of East Earl, died Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015, at Fairmount Homes after a brief illness.

Born in Goodville, he was the son of the late Clayton D. and Esther (Martin) Leaman. His wife, Dorothy (Wanner) Leaman, died Sept. 30, 2001.

Luke worked as a service manager for Sauder Chevrolet and later for Conestoga Wood Specialties. He was a member at Weaverland Mennonite Church and he enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family.

Surviving are four children: Donna J., married to Glen Kanagy, of Bellville; Carol A., married to Tim Weaver, of New Holland; Sandy L., married to Clair Martin, of Narvon; and Dale L., married to Lonita Leaman, of New Holland; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; five brothers and sisters: Evelyn Bare of New Holland; Clayton Leaman of East Earl; Dorothy, married to Horace Wanner, of New Holland; Mark, married to Brenda Leaman, of East Earl; and Paul Leaman of Terre Hill.

Preceding him in death is a sister; Irene Leaman; and two brothers: Elmer and Roy Leaman.

Services were held Dec. 18 at Weaverland Mennonite Church, East Earl, with the Pastor Brian Martin officiating. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.

Levi W. Wissler, 93, Ephrata, WWII vet, Rubinson’s store manager, First UMC member

Levi W. Wissler, 93, of Ephrata, passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2015, at the Lebanon VA Medical Center, following an extended illness.

He was born in Millway to the late Levi K. and Mabel R. (Wolf) Wissler, and was the husband of Ruth (Rohrer) Wissler, with whom he shared 31 years of marriage.

Mr. Wissler was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ephrata. He was a graduate of Warwick High School and Lancaster Business School, and was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He was the manager of Rubinson’s Department Store in New Holland for more than 30 years prior to his retirement.

In addition to his wife, Levi is survived by two sons: Timothy, husband of Ann Wissler, of Atlanta, Ga.; and Paul, husband of Frances Wissler, of Dalton, Ga.; two step-sons: Dennis and Scott; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother: Paul Wissler of Lititz.

He was preceded in death by his first wife: Olive (Hauenstein) Wissler; two brothers: Henry and John Wissler; and a sister: Martha Brubaker.

Funeral services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Amos R. Wanner, 87, Ephrata, Ephrata school district maintenance worker, avid gardener

Amos R. Wanner, 87, of Ephrata, passed away at Ephrata Community Hospital, on Dec. 13, 2015.

Born in Adamstown, Amos was the son of the late Daniel H. and Bertha (Worfel) Wanner. He was the loving husband of the late Betty Jane (Saylor) Wanner.

Amos worked for Ephrata School District in the maintenance department and retired in 1994. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending his time gardening.

Amos is survived by his son: Steven R. Wanner, of Ephrata; step-children: Barry Saylor, husband of Mary, of Akron; Rick Saylor, of Delaware; and Sally Hunter, wife of Gary, of Drumore. He is also survived by nieces and nephews: Janet, William, Virginia; Roberta, wife of Kenny; Johnah, Ryland, and Carl.

Interment will take place at Memory Garden, Ephrata, and will be private and at the convenience of the family.

George Murray Cooper Jr., 86, Denver, Commonwealth of PA accountant, decorated Army veteran

Sergeant Major George Murray Cooper Jr., 86, of Denver, died Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, at Lancaster General Hospital.

Born in Kingstree, S.C., on Feb. 26, 1929, he was the husband of Katie M. (Levy) Cooper of Denver. He was the son of the late George Murray Cooper Sr. and Rosa E. (York) Cooper.

George was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Lancaster. He graduated from East High School in Columbus, Ohio, and attended Harrisburg Community College where he earned his associate’s degree in accounting. He continued his education in accounting and taxation up until recent months.

He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army for 28 years, traveling extensively while serving his country. He received many awards, including the National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. He retired as a sergeant major.

Post retirement, he worked for 17 years as an accountant for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, and later for Jackson Hewitt and H&R Block.

In addition to his wife, George is survived by a son: Derrick W. Thomas of Houston, Texas; two daughters: Kassandra G. Guyton (Velton) of Indiana, and Lucinda A. Smith of Ohio; a goddaughter: Etta Horton (Brian) of Macungie; a brother: Jim Cooper; and a sister: Mary Horton, both of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

Home Going Services were held Dec. 19 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Lancaster, with the Revs. Roland P. Forbes Jr. and Thaddeus L. Godwin Sr. officiating. Burial will be private.

Ellen E. Hagy, 90, of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015, at Ephrata Manor.

She was born in Ephrata Township to the late Jacob and Edna (Getz) Kern and was the wife of the late Kenneth E. Hagy.

She graduated from Ephrata High School in 1943 and the McCann School of Business. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Denver. Ellen enjoyed shopping, traveling, collecting Hummels, and spending time with her family. She was an accomplished guitarist and accordion player. Ellen served as secretary/treasurer of the Denver Supply Co. for more than 30 years.

Ellen is survived by a son: Arthur Lee, husband of Carol Ann (Hess) Hagy, of Stevens; three grandchildren: Cherie Rathman of Denver, Kimberly Saragih of Indonesia, and Benjamin Hagy of New Cumberland; and eight great-grandchildren: Brooke, Haley, Jonathan, Jeremiah, Andrew, and Isabella Rathman; and Ulina and Elisabeth Saragih.

In addition to her parents and husband, Ellen was preceded in death by a son: Kenneth Lee; and a daughter: Anne Louise.

Services were held Dec. 28 in the Donecker Chapel at Ephrata Manor, with the Rev. Nathanael Manthey officiating. Interment took place in Mount Zion Evangelical Cemetery.

Dean Lee Allison, 52, Stevens, worked at Greystone Manor Farms, loved animals

Dean Lee Allison, 52, of Stevens, formerly of Lititz, passed away Monday, Dec. 14, 2015, in Maine of natural causes.

He was born in Lancaster to the late Harold and Erla Louise (Burkholder) Allison.

He was a graduate of Warwick High School and a long time member of the Future Farmers of America. Dean was a farmer since childhood and had a way with animals, especially horses. After his first marriage, he worked on Greystone Manor Farms for 14 years. After an accident bearing him disabled in 1996, he stopped farming and retired. Even though he couldn’t do hard farming anymore, he still managed to work with animals. He started hauling livestock for Lancaster County’s local Amish and Mennonites, until the day he passed away. Dean’s hobby for animals and horses were his passion and with his daughter at his side, passed this passion on. Dean was a kind and passionate person who did what he could to survive. His memory will live on forever in his daughter and grandchildren and all the lives he touched along the way.

Dean is survived by a daughter: Amanda K. Hess of New Holland; four grandchildren: Dakota Allison Moyer, Josiah D. Hess Jr., Dylan Horning, Alyvia Riley Hess; three brothers: Daniel L. Allison Sr. of West Virginia, Douglas L. Allison of Millersville, and Donald L. Allison of Lebanon.

He was preceded in death by two great-aunts, uncles and great-grandparents.

Private services and interment were held at the convenience of the family.

Edwin S. Weaver, infant, of Ephrata, passed away Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015, at his residence.

He was born in Ephrata to Curvin and Ella (Shirk) Weaver.

In addition to his parents, Edwin is survived by four brothers: Curvin Jr., Marlin, Nathan, and Mark Weaver; six sisters: Miriam, Irene, Rachel, Anetta, Lavina, and Lorraine; paternal grandmother: Alta H. Weaver of Ephrata; maternal grandmother: Alma Z. Shirk of Ephrata.

A graveside service was held Dec. 22 at Conestoga Mennonite Church Cemetery, West Earl Township.

Gordon D. Ryner, 89, Ephrata, WWII vet, ALCOA retiree, enjoyed motorcycle riding

Gordon D. Ryner, 89, of Ephrata, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, at WellSpan Ephrata Hospital.

He was the husband of the late Gladys E. (Slaymaker) Ryner, who died in 2002. Gordy was born in South Dakota.

Gordy was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of World War II. He served in Burma, Central Burma, and China. He retired from ALCOA. Gordy enjoyed riding motorcycle and traveled to every state in the continental U.S. He was a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association and the P.J. Bair Post No. 7418 VFW, Gap.

He is survived by two sons: Ronald D., married to Roni Ryner, of East Earl; and Richard A., married to Ruth Ryner, of Ephrata; and a daughter-in-law: Laraine Ryner of Christiana; five grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son: Randall; a brother; a sister; and his companion: Dawn Miller.

Gordy’s family would like to thank Hospice and Community Care for their compassionate care. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Ronald H. Aires, 85, formerly of Ephrata, school teacher, studied at the Sorbonne

Ronald H. Aires, 85, of Columbia, and formerly of Lancaster and Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015.

Born in Lancaster, Ronald was a son of the late Ray G. and Anna (Hess) Aires.

He is survived by one brother: Randolph H. Aires, husband of Virginia, of Gardners; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Ronald was preceded in death by one brother: Ramon “Ray” H. Aires.

Ronald was a secondary private school instructor from 1953 to 1965, teaching at schools in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland. Ronald was an avid reader and loved to learn.

For his career in education he earned a bachelor of arts degree from Princeton University, a master’s of arts degree from Yale University, and studied at the Paris-Sorbonne University in Paris, France.

Bonita J. Swinehart, 75, formerly of Ephrata, Brethren Village nurse’s aide, mother of four

Bonita J. Swinehart, 75, formerly of Ephrata, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015.

Born in Lititz, she was the widow of Raymond Swinehart, and the daughter of the late Lester and Minerva Smith Haines.

Bonita worked as a nurse’s aide for 35 years at Brethren Village.

She is survived by four children: Ray Michael Swinehart; Kenneth L. Swinehart; Melinda K. Doyle; and Heather S., wife of David Reheard; several grandchildren, great- and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother: Lester Haines; and a sister: Betsy, wife of Tom Stauffer.

Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

M. Arlene Burkholder, 92, formerly of Akron, kitchen worker at Brownstown vo-tech

M. Arlene (Fitterling) Burkholder, 92, formerly of Akron, passed away Monday, Dec. 21, 2015, at Ephrata Manor.

She was born in Cumru Township to the late Elmer and Minnie (Good) Fitterling, and was the wife of the late Edwin Burkholder.

Arlene was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She had worked in the kitchen at the Brownstown Vo-Tech. In the earlier years, she had worked at various sewing factories in the area.

She is survived by a son: Bradley, husband of Amy (Tressler) Burkholder, of Reinholds; a daughter: Janice Burkholder of Lititz; two granddaughters; one great-granddaughter; a brother: Marvin Fitterling of Ephrata; and a sister, Lillian Zaun of Adamstown.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by an infant daughter; a sister: Eleanor Hatt; and two brothers: Harry and Earl Fitterling.

Services are set for Wednesday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m., at the Stradling Funeral Home, 30 N. Ninth St., Akron, with Pastor Matthew J. Lenahan officiating. There is a viewing one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place in the Wyomissing Cemetery.
