John Anthony Torrenti, 89, Ephrata, WWII Navy veteran, beloved father, proud of his faith

John Anthony Torrenti, 89, of Ephrata, affectionately known by many as “Papa Jack,” passed away Monday, May 5, 2014 after a long-standing battle with heart disease.

He was born in Old Saybrook, Conn., to the late Eugene and Amelia (Adanti) Torrenti and was the husband of the late Natalie M. (Kirtland) Torrenti who passed away in 1993.

We all are given a story to live. John chose to serve his country in World War II with the United States Navy and then returned home to start his family with Natalie Kirtland. He successfully began his career at UARCO Business Forms to support his family of five boys. John was an avid athlete and enjoyed playing and watching his children excel. John believed a man’s purpose in life was to serve his country, raise a family, and overall be a “good man.” Many would say that John was successful in living out his purpose, as he knew it. He was a good father, husband, and provider.

It was not until he turned 84 that John accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. This helped him realize his true purpose in life. John learned it was not enough to simply be a good man, but that without his Savior life had no purpose. It was exciting to watch him learn and grow through the relationships that he developed at Washington Avenue Bible Church. Through his relationship with Christ, John now has everlasting life with his Savior and has a newfound appreciation for a man’s true purpose. His story is simple: you are never too old and or too broken for God’s saving grace, and in that truth we celebrate.

John is survived by five sons: Jeff, husband of Beth (Riley) Torrenti of Atlanta, Ga., Peter, husband of Nancy (Desplaines) Torrenti of Chicago, Ill., Michael, husband of Patricia (Doherty) Torrenti of Stevens, John, husband of Bobbi Torrenti of Riverside, Calif., Todd, husband of Becca (Anderson) Torrenti of Riverside, Calif.; grandchildren: Daniel (Leah) Torrenti, Robyn (Jay) Cathy, Tegan Torrenti, Nicole (Stacia) Wapniarski, Juliette Torrenti, Jerod Torrenti, Kelsie Torrenti, Kristen (Jay) Pearson, Michelle (Joshua) Newswanger, Natalie (James) Jenkins, Matthew (Bethany) Torrenti, Ryan (Leah) Torrenti; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister: Dolly Mucha of Clinton, Conn..

In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters: Lydia Offredi, Eunice Rutigliano; and a brother: Eugene Torrenti,

A memorial service was held May 12 at Washington Avenue Bible Church, Ephrata, with Pastor Jay Quirk officiating. Interment was in the Riverside Cemetery, Old Saybrook, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to the Washington Avenue Bible Church, 149 Washington Ave., Ephrata, PA 17522.
