Donald H. Bridges, 90, WWII vet, ran Twin Bridges Inn in Denver, Sertoma district governor

Donald H. Bridges, 90, of Ephrata, died Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Ephrata Hospital.

Born January 10, 1924 in Marietta, he was a son of the late Frank W. and Alice L. (Atkins) Bridges and husband of Nancy F. (Ament) Bridges.

Donald was a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army with the Army Corps of Engineers for three-and-a-half years in World War II. He re-enlisted for a total of eight years.

He was in the Conestoga Sertoma Club for 12 years where he served as President and District Governor. Donald worked at RCA and held numerous sales jobs. He and his wife also owned and operated Twin Bridges Inn in Denver, PA. Donald was an avid stamp collector.

In addition to his wife, Nancy, Donald is survived by two sons: Scott, husband of Cynthia, and Kelly, husband of Barbara; one daughter: Debbie, wife of Art Rankin; two granddaughters: Stacey, wife of Daniel Benedict, and Amanda Ziedonis; four great-grandchildren; and a half-brother: Paige Bridges.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family and are under the care of Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, Ephrata, PA.

Ursula P. Katerman, 77, worked for Western Electric, enjoyed camping, meeting new people

Ursula P. Katerman, 77, Denver Boro., died at home April 12, 2014.

Born in Kassel, Germany, a daughter of the late Heinrich and Paula (Wetzel) Krause, she was married to Karl “Roy” Katerman for 31 years.

Ursula had worked at Western Electric. She enjoyed traveling, camping, her family and pets and meeting new people.

Also surviving is a daughter: Fran C. Spangler, Reamstown; sons: Jack T. Griesemer, fiancé of Loraine Boyle, Wernesville; and Perry S. (Patricia Borrell) Griesemer, Birdsboro; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister: Rosemarie Beard, Atlanta, Ga.

A time of sharing memories will be held Thursday, April 17 at 6 p.m. from Good Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, Reamstown. At her request, there will be no viewing. Rather than flowers, contributions may be sent to Hospice & Community Care, Box 4125, Lancaster, PA 17604-4125.

Larry E. Kreider, 74, Ephrata H.S. class of ‘57, Army veteran, excavator, enjoyed hunting

Larry E. Kreider, 74, of Stevens, passed away at his residence Friday, April 4, 2014.

Larry was the son of the late Paul J. Kreider and Susie B. (Eberly) Kreider.

A 1957 Ephrata High School graduate, Larry worked as an equipment operator in the excavation industry, worshipped at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Brickerville, and was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was an avid hunter and trap shooter; and was a member of Ephrata Lodge 665 Free and Accepted Masons and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon.

He is survived by his sister: Arlene Henly of Stevens; niece: Donna Lawson; and two nephews: Dale Henly and Bill Kreider.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

James Edward Bressler, 70, served 41 years with police, New Covenant Church member

James Edward Bressler, 70, of Ephrata, died April 13, 2014 in ManorCare Health Services, Spring Township.

He was the husband of Marian Louise (Moser) Bressler, whom he married December 16, 1983. Born August 13, 1943 in Reading, he was a son of the late Norman John, Jr. and Dorothy (Druzba) Bressler.

James was a 1962 graduate of Wilson High School. He was employed as a police officer for 41 years, having worked with Reading Police Department and Brecknock Police Department, where he retired from in July of 2008. James was a member of New Covenant Church of God, Ephrata.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his three children: Vickie L., wife of Drew Warner of Reading; Robert J. Bressler of Wilmington, Del. and Alicia A. Bressler of Mohnton; four stepchildren: Colleen A. Graul of Reading; Colette M. Bressler of West Reading; Christine L. wife of Brian Wentzel of Spring Township and Vincent Serafino, Jr. of Ephrata; two sisters: Kathryn, wife of Lawrence Hertz of Wyomissing and Maryann, wife of Carl Spatz of Mohrsville; a brother: Larry, husband of Carmen Bressler of Oley; a grandson: Christopher D. Warner; four step-grandchildren: Nathaniel Graul, Maria Miller, Brandon Wentzel and Ciarra Wentzel; and nieces and nephews: John, Jessica, Jenalee and Charles.

Services will be April 18 at noon. in Kuhn-Stitzel Funeral Homes and Crematory, Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township.

William W. “Bill” Diffenderfer, 81, of Lititz passed away April 10. Born in Lititz, Bill retired as a carpenter and also worked for the Warwick School District and Manheim Auto Auction. A son, Jeffrey (spouse of Angie) Diffenderfer, resides in Ephrata.

Christian H. “Nip” Moyer, 75, of Sun City, Fla., formerly of Washington, D.C. and Reading, passed away January 28. He retired at the rank of Senior Chief, after serving 24 years in the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed boating, fishing and playing the organ. A son, Terry Moyer, and his wife, Lori, reside in Denver. A memorial service will be held April 19 at 11 a.m. at Furman Home for Funerals, 59 W. Main Street, Leola, PA 17540.

Donna M. (Anderson) Moyer, 66, of Rick’s Road, New Ringgold, died April 9 after a brief illness, at home while in the care of her family. She taught math at Manheim Township School District for 12 years and was an Adjunct Professor at Lehigh Carbon Community College, Morgan Campus, Tamaqua. A certified and sanctioned U.S.A. Volleyball Official, Donna worked the NCAA National Championship Final Four as an official score keeper. Her mother, Evelyn (Rogers) Anderson, lives in Brownstown.

Sharyn K. Rissler, 47, EHS class of ‘86, mother of three, active at Grace EC Church

Sharyn K. Rissler, 47, of Akron, passed away Monday, April 14, 2014, at her residence.

Born in Ephrata, she was the daughter of Mary E. (Royer) Martin and the late M. Dale Martin. She was the wife of Vincent P. Rissler.

She was a member of Grace EC Church, Akron, where she was involved with children’s programs, senior choir and praise team, small group leader and Sunday school teacher. Sharyn was a 1986 graduate of Ephrata High School and was a member of the 1986 District 3 Girls Basketball Championship team. She was a sports enthusiast especially when it involved her children. She was a day care worker at Helping Hands and had previously worked for the Lancaster County Tax Collection Bureau and Learning Ladder Day Care.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by three children: Kaylyn E. Rissler, Myranda L. Rissler and Bryce D. Rissler; three sisters: Robin, wife of Lori Haley, Beth, wife of Perry Lorah and Deana, wife of Butch Long.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a nephew: Graydon.

A viewing will be held on Friday, April 18, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Grace EC Church, 101 N. 7th St., Akron. An additional viewing will take place on Saturday, April 19, from 10 to 11 am, followed by her funeral service at 11 am, with Rev. Leslie Cool officiating. Interment will take place in the St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery.

William Walter Leisey, 72, volunteered with Akron and Rothsville Fire Depts., deer hunter

William “Bill” Walter Leisey, 72, of Ephrata, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at the Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in Ephrata to the late Walter and Florence (Zimmerman) Leisey and was the husband of Carolyn A. Haldeman.

Bill was a member of the New Covenant Church of God, Ephrata. He was a fire policeman and a member of the Lancaster County Fireman’s Assoc., a life member of the Akron Volunteer Fire Co., and the Rothsville Volunteer Fire Co. He enjoyed deer hunting, yardwork and helping others.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons: William Scott Haldeman, fiance of Jennifer Moyer of Ephrata, Christopher Michael, husband of Regina Haldeman of Reamstown, Jonathan Paul Haldeman at home; two grandchildren: Quinn Bradlee Haldeman and Zydney Kochel; two sisters: Mary Ann and Shirley.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Robert Showalter.

A service to celebrate Bill’s life will take place Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m., at the Akron Volunteer Fire Company Social Hall, 1229 Main St., Akron, with Pastor Leonard Stein officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Robert Taylor, 60, truck driver for New Creation, enjoyed spending time with family

Robert Taylor, 60, passed away April 17, 2014 in his Adamstown residence.

He had shared the last 18 years with his companion of Waneda Millisock.

Born January 29, 1954 in Detroit, Mich., he was a son of the late John and Mary (McCledon) Taylor.

He was a 1971 graduate of Mackenzie High School. Robert was a driver for New Creation, Ephrata. He enjoyed driving and was proud to be a hard worker.

He was a wonderful, fun loving person who loved spending time with his loved ones and friends, especially his children and nieces and nephews. He could brighten any room and was very outgoing. He enjoyed trips to Ocean City, Md., and Virginia Beach. He was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed cooking and grilling. Robert was a member of Trinity Church of God, Reading.

In addition to Waneda he is survived by his four children: Ashley C. Taylor, fiancé of Vincent McRae, Reading Robert J. Taylor, Reading, Bryan, husband of Tarsheima Millisock, Adamstown, and Rosanna, wife of Jimmy Smith, N.C. Also surviving are his siblings: Mary, wife of Anthony Littles, Detroit, Mich., Janet Taylor, Detroit, Mich., Earlean, wife of Adolphus Walker, N.C., and Christine Taylor, N.C.; his grandchildren: Jasiah, Aliyah, Alexis, and Jaedyn; and his goddaughter: Cely Rosa.

Robert was predeceased by his sister: Joan Taylor; and his grandson: Dean Edward McRae.

Ruth Ann Nussbaum, 61, Cocalico grad, 4-H leader, active in church, Sperry worker

Ruth Ann Nussbaum, 61, Denver, died unexpectedly at home April 20, 2014.

Born in Denver, a daughter of the late Emory R. and Kathryn M. (Fry) Hirneisen, she was the wife of Earl J. Nussbaum for 36 years.

She graduated in 1970 from Cocalico High School. An active member of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday school, was a youth group advisor and served with social ministries. Ruth Ann worked for Sperry New Holland, was a 25-year 4-H leader and loved cooking and crafts.

Also surviving is her son: Erik M. Nussbaum, fiancé of Jessica Berrier, Denver; a granddaughter: Zoey N. Nussbaum; and a brother: Donald (Mary Eisenhauer) Hirneisen, Lebanon.

The celebration of her life will be Friday, April 25, at 10 a.m. from Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, 11 S. Muddy Creek Rd., Denver, with Pastors Nancy and Peter Schwabe-Fry officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery Annex, Denver. Viewings will be Thursday 6 to 8 p.m. from Good Funeral Home, Reamstown, and at the church Friday prior to the service.

Lola Miller Olsen, 70, born in Ephrata, professor, NASA employee, swim coach, pilot

Lola Miller Olsen, a scientist, swimmer and teacher, died in Huntersville, N.C., Saturday, April 19, 2014. She was 70.

Lola was born in Ephrata, to Carl and Edith (Gehman) Miller.

Lola graduated from Lancaster’s J.P. McCaskey High School in 1962 and was awarded the school’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2012. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1966 and earned her master’s degree from UNC-Charlotte in 1972. While in Charlotte, Lola raised her children, taught Earth Sciences at UNC-Charlotte, coached swimming, earned her pilot’s license and studied Climatology at UNC-Chapel Hill.

In 1986, she moved to Greenbelt, Md., to work at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. She served as the Project Manager for the Global Change Master Directory, a unique resource that makes valuable satellite data available worldwide. She also pursued doctoral studies and taught at the University of Maryland.

Lola is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Sperry and Bill Krueger of Raleigh, N.C.; her son and daughter-in-law: Olee Joel and Tonje Woxman Olsen of Cornelius, N.C.; her grandchildren: Jack and Lucy Krueger, and Ole Christian, Carl and Caroline Olsen; her brothers: Andrew Miller of The Villages, Fla., and Daniel Miller of Carollton, Miss.

Leonard D. Lewis, 82, Ephrata, served the USAF in Vietnam, Korea, avid coin collector

Leonard D. Lewis, 82, of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014, at the Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in Texas and was the husband of Vennisha Lewis, with whom he shared 33 years of marriage.

Leonard was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Lancaster. He retired from the US Air Force with over 20 years of service. He served in the Vietnam and Korean Wars. He was an avid coin collector.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: Robert and William Lewis; a daughter: Linda Lewis; four step children: Mel Hagler, Tina Simon, Lori Forgerson and Melody Speed; a brother: David Lewis; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Ray Lewis; and a sister: Louise Lewis.

A graveside service took place April 18 at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with military honors.

Harold “Sonny” V. Kutz Jr., 77, of Royersford, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Friday, April 18, 2014, at Parkhouse Providence Pointe, Pottstown.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Harold Sr. and Edna V. (Boose) Kutz.

Harold had attended the Salem Reformed Church, Reamstown. He enjoyed doing puzzles, bicycling, bowling, attending baseball games and was a Phillies fan.

Sonny is survived by a sister: Carolyn Loose of Pottstown; a sister-in-law: Gladys Kutz of Pottstown; an aunt and uncle: Arvilla and Richard Myer of Pottstown; cousins: Shelly, Leslie, Craig Myer of Pottstown; nieces and nephews: Cindy, wife of Edward Booth of Quakertown, Holly, wife of Todd Gensemer of Shillington, Scott, husband of Bobbie Loose of Ephrata, Michael, husband of Tammy Loose of Lancaster; great nieces and nephews: Sarah and Tyler Booth, Jack and Lucas Gensemer, Alvin, Dasha, Christopher and Ann Loose.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Larry and Wilbur Kutz.

Jean M. (Summers) Burkholder, 86, of Lancaster, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014, at the Mennonite Home, Lancaster.

She was born in Adamstown and was the wife of the late Abram M. Burkholder.

Jean is survived by a twin sister: June Gamber.

Viola (Fritz) Hess, 96, of Ephrata, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Golden Living Center of Lancaster.

She was born in Brecknock Township to the late William and Lizzie (Glass) Fritz and was the wife of the late Frank H. Hess who passed away in 1969.

Viola was a member of the Zion’s Reformed UCC Church, Lincoln. She had worked as a supervisor at the former Walter W. Moyer Company from 1956-1982, and then worked part time at the Garden Spot Auto Auction until 1986. She was also a member of the Lincoln Friendly Circle.

She is survived by a daughter: Joyce E., wife of Leroy S. Burkhart of Ephrata; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a grandson.

Services were held April 22 at Zion’s Reformed UCC Church, Ephrata, with Rev. Barry Zimmerman officiating. Interment followed in the Lincoln Cemetery.

Rebecca C. Weaver, 87, member of Denver Mennonite, worked at Spring Glen Fresh Foods

Rebecca C. Weaver, 87, of 333 Wheat Ridge Dr., Ephrata, formerly of Denver, died Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Fairmount Homes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Enos S. Weaver, in 1997. Born in Westover, Md., she was the daughter of the late John Bennett and Lena Alberta (Huffman) Yoder.

She was a member of Denver Mennonite Church and had worked at Spring Glen Fresh Foods and the former Meadowbrook Farmers Market.

Surviving are two children: Levi Y. married to Norma (Minch) Weaver, Ormond Beach, Fla. and Ruth Y. married to Barry Remp, Sinking Spring; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; four siblings: Eli married to Minnie Yoder, Va.; Freda married to H. Arthur Good, Ephrata; Crist married to Jean Ann Thorton Yoder, Md.; and Grace married to Blair Hann, Elizabethtown.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son: Paul Y. Weaver in 1957; a grandson: Christopher Shirk; and six siblings: Paul, David, Roy, George, and Charles Yoder and Esther Martin.

Services were held April 23 at Centerville Mennonite Church with Luke Sensenig, Ray Auker, Mark Sensenig, and Philip Sensenig as officiating ministry. Interment was in Hinkletown Mennonite Cemetery.

Judith Zucker Clark, 81, of Rothsville, passed away April 13. Born in Royal Oak, Mich., Judith once worked as a park naturalist after earning her bachelors degree in biology from Cornell University. She loved her family and nature. Her daughter, Catherine Schnerr, lives in Denver.

Joseph E. Current, Sr., 84, formerly of Manheim Twp., passed away April 12, West Palm Beach, Fla. Joseph retired as a builder locally. He enjoyed boating, buying and selling cars, as well as taking cruises throughout the Caribbean. His son Joseph, husband of Debra Dommel, lives in Ephrata.

Anna M. Nixdorf, 83, of Lititz, died April 16. She had worked as LPN with the Oregon Nursing Home for over 17 years. She enjoyed gardening, collecting thimbles and loved the outdoors. Her son Raymond Hehnly (husband of Darlene) and a sister, Evelyn Landis (wife of Richard) reside in Ephrata. A sister, Pauline Firestone, lives in Akron. A sister, Betty Buchter, hails from Denver.

Howard C. “Skip” Tangert, age 75, of Salunga, died April 15 at the Rheems Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He retired from Harley-Davidson, York, where he worked as a welder. He enjoyed collecting Matchbox cars. Skip loved to spend time with his pet dogs. His son, Michael Tangert (husband of Barbara) lives in Denver.

Edward C. Trafford, 62, of Manheim, died April 20 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. An avid Barons fan, Ed was a founding member of the Manheim Touchdown Club, served as treasurer for the Manheim Central Track & Field booster club, past president of the Manheim Chamber of Commerce, served as a member of the Manheim Borough zoning board. A daughter, Jeni wife of Kevin Neiles, lives in Ephrata.

Marjorie Jane Taylor, 95, taught Sunday school for 50 years, enjoyed square dancing

Marjorie Jane (Klahre) Taylor, 95, formerly of Hollidaysburg and Altoona, passed away Saturday, April 19, 2014 in Lancaster.

“Margie” was born on December 18, 1918 in Altoona to Bernard and Grace (Stoke) Klahre.

On May 20, 1945 Margie married Hawn Samuel Taylor at Simpson Methodist Church in Altoona. Sam passed away on April 18, 1989 and their only son, Richard, passed away on May 14, 2003.

Margie was a 1936 graduate of Altoona High School and attended Penn State for two years. She was employed by Sears, Stellabotte and J&M printing in Altoona as both a bookkeeper and office manager. She taught Sunday school at Simpson Methodist Church for 50 years. Margie and Sam enjoyed square dancing and camping and she served in various positions including president for the Pennsylvania Dancing Campers and Chimney Rock Square Dance Club. Margie was also a former member of the Hollidaysburg Eastern Star. In 1987, Margie joined the Hollidaysburg YMCA and volunteered wherever needed. She served as secretary of the board of directors for the YMCA and was thrilled to be named member emeritus of the board. Margie’s hobbies included needlepoint, quilting and counted cross stitch.

She is survived by her sister-in-law: Ethel Taylor Boland, with whom she resided with for the last seven years at The Groves Assisted Living in Ephrata. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law: Margaret Taylor; sister-in-law: Lauretta Taylor Fay; nephews: David Boland and Lynn Taylor; nieces: Sue Zimmerman and Chris Hackenberg.

Her sister, Virginia; and brother, Robert, also preceded her in death.

Internment at Alto Reste Cemetery, Altoona. Memorial service to be announced at a later time.

Joseph S. Zimmerman, 92, realtor for Witwer Real Estate, Weaverland Mennonite member

Joseph S. Zimmerman, 92, of 99 Bethany Rd., Ephrata, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Ephrata Manor.

Born in Terre Hill, he was the son of the late Abram and Lizzie (Shirk) Zimmerman.

He was a retired janitor at Wal-Mart and a retired realtor at the former Witwer Real Estate in Ephrata.

Joseph was a member of the Weaverland Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference.

Surviving are two sons: Allan D. married to Lori (Gladfelter) Zimmerman, Manheim and Ike married to Michele (Hetrick) Zimmerman, New Holland; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by ten siblings: Lydia Horst, Lena Sauder, Lizzie Hoover, Mary Anna Hoover, Mabel Oberholtzer, Weaver Zimmerman, Aaron Zimmerman, John Zimmerman, Abram Zimmerman and Harvey Zimmerman.

Services were held April 26 at Weaverland Mennonite Church with Bishop Amos G. Martin, Harlan Martin, Amos K. Martin and Ivan Hurst officiating. Interment was in the adjoining church cemetery.

Emma Kathryn Frey, 95, retired from Ephrata Shoe Factory, enjoyed time with family

Emma Kathryn Frey, 95, of Denver, went home to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 23, 2014.

Born in New Holland, she was the daughter of the late Ivan H. Stone, Sr. and Florence (Heuyard) Stone. Her husband of 65 years, Alvin L. Frey, died July 4, 2007.

She worked at the Ephrata Shoe factory, from where she retired. She enjoyed reading daily newspapers, her Bible and the Daily Bread. She loved flowers and getting together with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Surviving are three children: Bonnie, married to James Witman of East Earl, Brenda Baker of Long Island, N.Y., and Robert Frey of Denver; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; five sisters: Marian Miller of New Holland, Mary Byers of New Holland, Mabel Weaver of Lititz, Hazel Spence of Mount Joy, and Constance, married to Carl Adams of Blue Ball; and a brother Kenneth Stone of New Holland.

Preceding her in death is a daughter: Betty June Gravely (July 21, 2009); two brothers: Ralph G., and Ivan Stone, Jr.; and three sisters: Evelyn Weaver, Janet Stover, and Charlotte Reeser.

Services were held April 26 at the Groff-High Funeral Home, New Holland with the Reverend Fred P. Raupp officiating. Interment followed in Memory Gardens.

Pearl E. Granger, 87, formerly of Akron, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2014 at Ephrata Manor, where she currently resided.

Born in Ephrata, Pearl was a daughter of the late Floyd S. Beck and Luella Roether Beck.

She was a 1944 graduate of Ephrata High School and worked for the former Armstrong Cork Company in Lancaster, and most recently State Farm Insurance with her late husband, Robert Granger.

Pearl is survived by one daughter: Venita, wife of Reginald Sheppard of Lacomb, La.; two sons: Gregory Granger, husband of Donna Nagle Granger of Ephrata, and Kurt Granger of Somonauk, Ill.; five grandchildren: Kirsti Granger of Franklin, Ohio, Austin Granger of McEwen, Tenn., Chad Kellenberger, husband of Jamie, of Rock Hill, S.C., Tara Kellenberger of Mt. Joy, and Michael Kellenberger of Quakertown; three great-grandchildren: Kylae, Cameron, and Nolan Kellenberger; and a sister: Gloria Beck Widder, wife of Frank Widder of Akron.

Final care will be private at the convenience of the family and is under the care of Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, Ephrata, PA.
