Franklin H. Leed Jr. 65, drove in Make-a-Wish convoy, Scoutmaster, enjoyed hunting

Franklin “Frank” H. Leed Jr., 65, of Newmanstown, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014, at his residence following a ten year battle with cancer.

He was born in HeidelbergTownship to the late Franklin and Helen (Yapus) Leed Sr. and was the husband of Brenda M. (McEllhenney) Leed, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage.

Frank was a member of the EphrataChurch of the Brethren and previously of GraceE.C.Church, Ephrata. He was a truck driver for APA Transport and had retired from Dart Container as a truck driver. He was a member of the Teamsters Local 771 and a board member of the Teamster Federal Credit Union, state champion for the Truck Driving Rodeo, drove for the Make-A-Wish convoy, was involved in Bible study with Dart truck drivers and served as an assistant scoutmaster for Ephrata Troop #73 for several years. He enjoyed hunting and especially enjoyed time with his family.

In addition to his wife; he is survived by a son: Troy F., husband of Michelle (Watts) Leed of Ephrata; a daughter: Stacy L., wife of Steven W. Moore of Ephrata; grandchildren: Alicia D. Land Solis, wife of Hugo Solis Vidal of Ephrata, Conner P. Land of Ephrata, Melissa N. Hornberger of Ephrata; two brothers: Howard (Hop) H. Leed of East Petersburg, James (Jim) L., husband of Brenda (Eckenrode) Leed of Newmanstown; three sisters: Marion (Tut), wife of Richard Hainley of Newmanstown, Marie, wife of Donald (Donnie) Becker of Newmanstown and Mildred (Nook), wife of Darell McEllhenney of East Petersburg.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-mother: Margaret (Peg) Reedy-Leed; and a son-in-law: Patrick F. Land.

Services were held March 28 at EphrataChurch of the Brethren, with Pastors Galen Hackman and Jeffrey Martin officiating. Interment was in the SchaefferstownCemetery.

Sandra L. Stuber 72, sewing machine operator, enjoyed crafts, painting, camping

Sandra L. Stuber, 72, of Stevens, passed away March 25, 2014, at the EphrataCommunityHospital.

She was born in BerksCounty to the late Harry Matz and Virginia (Schaeffer) Howell and was the wife of the late Harold Stuber Sr.

During her working years she was a sewing machine operator. She loved crafts, painting and camping.

Sandra is survived by a son: Harold Stuber Jr. of Stevens; two daughters: Teresa F., wife of Roger Klopp of Denver, Tammy L. Bohanan of Ephrata; grandchildren: Jesse and Eric Klopp, Kristy, Rodger Jr., and Dusti Bohanan; great-grandchildren: Autumn and Damien Bohanan, Jazmine Hanna and Peyton Gardner; and a brother: Harry Matz Jr.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a brother: Paul Epler.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Lavilla M. Smith 94, long-time sexton at HUMC, homemaker, Hopeland Mfg. worker

Lavilla M. Smith, 94, of Ephrata, passed away Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Ephrata Manor.

She was born in ClayTownship, daughter of the late John and Alice (Eberly) Farlow and was the wife of the late Clyde A. Smith, who died October 16, 2000.

She was a member of the HopelandUnitedMethodistChurch, where she served as a sexton of Church for 37 years. She was also a member of Brickerville Leisure Hours, and the CocalicoAreaSeniorCenter in Reinholds. She was a homemaker and also worked for Hopeland Manufacturing.

Lavilla is survived by two daughters: Sylvia A., wife of Richard L. Weitzel of Lititz, and Sharon E., wife of Donald Neal of Melbourne, Fla.; a son: Nevin L., husband of Susan Smith of Lancaster; four grandchildren: Lori, Joshua, Margaret, and Michael; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a grandson: Jeffrey; and two brothers: Leroy and Harlan.

Services were held April 1 at Hopeland United Methodist Church, Hopeland, with Pastor David T. Ryan and Pastor Russell Eberly officiating. Interment followed in the adjoining church cemetery.

Kenneth L. Flickinger, 74, of New Cumberland, died Saturday, March 29, 2014 in HarrisburgHospital with his wife by his side.

Ken was born in Reamstown, LancasterCounty to the late Marvin and Grace (Overholser) Flickinger.

He was a retired Division Vice President for Jones Motor Group, Limerick, and an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. Additionally, he was a member of the VFW Post 7415, New Cumberland.

He is survived by his wife: D.J. (Mentzer) Flickinger; two sons: Mark E. Flickinger and wife Cynthia of Austin, Texas and Matthew S. Flickinger of Honolulu, Hawaii; two stepsons: Bill L. Donnelly and wife Tina of Manheim and Richard J. Tamanosky, II of New Cumberland; and a stepdaughter: Amy-Jo M. Tamanosky of Crofton, Md.; a brother: Thomas N. of Bakersfield, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 4 at 11 am in Parthemore Funeral Home & Cremation Services, New Cumberland. Viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. April 3 in the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Twp.

Abram F. Stoltzfus, 56, of 165 Farmers Lane, Ephrata passed away at Lancaster General Hospital Monday, March 31, 2014.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Abraham K. and Hannah K. Smoker Stoltzfus. He was the husband of Sadie K. Lapp Stoltzfus.

A self-employed sewing machine repairman, Mr. Stoltzfus was a member of the Old Order Amish Church.

Surviving are: a brother: Jacob S. married to Sarah Smucker Stoltzfus, Airville; four sisters: Barbara married to John M. Stoltzfus, Bloomsburg, Mattie married to Abner G. Stoltzfus, Peach Bottom, Annie married to John Z. Stoltzfus, Fort Plain, N.Y., Mary married to Henry Ebersol, Ronks.

Henry S. Bowman, 94, of 1001 E. Oregon Rd., Lititz, died March 25, 2014 at Landis Homes. Henry was a poultry farmer and a member of ErismanMennoniteChurch. He was a loving husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed music. His daughter, Linda, married to Robert Zimmerman, lives in Stevens.

Elmer K. Fisher, Sr., 81, Strasburg, passed away at his home March 24. Elmer was a retired farmer and a member of the OldOrderAmishChurch. He had 100 great-grand children. His daughter, Katie L., wife of Ben S. King, lives in Ephrata.

Rev. Mark A. Heiney, 85, of Marietta, formerly of Leola, went to his Father in Heaven March 25. He served locally as minister at ZionLutheranChurch, Marietta; and ZionLutheranChurch, Leola. He loved PennState sports, and he and his wife served as greeters for nine years at the Kentucky Derby. His daughter, Pamela F. Scott (wife of Terry Houck), lives in Ephrata.

Catherine T. Knauf, 95, died March 29, in Marlton, N.J. Her son, Charles F. Knauf Jr. (husband of Peggy), resides in Ephrata.

Elizabeth M. Martin, 86, New Holland, died March 25 at her home following a lengthy illness. She was a homemaker and a member of the NewHollandOldOrderMennoniteChurch. Her daughter, Anna Mae, married to Ammon Shirk, and son, Luke, married to Etta (Nolt) Martin, live in Ephrata.

Dorothy M. “Dottie” (Maretta) Petrovey, 73, of Lancaster, died Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Hamilton Arms. An avid reader, Dottie was employed as an assembler by Schott Brothers for 25 years until her retirement. She was a member of the former Ephrata Church of Christ.

Mary L. Smith, 86, of Columbia, died March 26. Mary was an active and devout member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Columbia. Mary was friendly to everyone she met, her loving advice to all she met was: “Always be kind, love is all that matters.” Her son, Edward J. Jr., husband of Katie Smith, resides in Ephrata, and a sister, Rose Marie, wife of James Bradley, lives in Stevens.

Carol Ann Tibbins, 61, of New Holland, died unexpectedly March 24, 2014 at her home. As a dog lover, she served as a compassionate advocate for foster dogs along with caring for her own three. She also enjoyed her card club and going out to eat with the ladies. Her son, William Robb, married to Heather (Spacht) Tibbins, resides in Ephrata.

Marian J. Unangst, 71, of Lititz, died Friday, March 28, 2014 at Hospice & Community Care, Mt.Joy. Marian worked for 40 years at Dart Container in Leola, retiring in 2009. A sister, Peg, wife of Chet Clark, resides in Terre Hill. A sister, Ruth, wife of Merle Moyer, lives in Akron. A sister, Millie Zimmerman, lives in Ephrata. A sister Edna, spouse of Joe Rise, resides in Brownstown.

Jacqueline Zimmerman, 77, bank manager, on AIB board, ABWA, West Earl Lioness member

Jacqueline M. Zimmerman, 77, a resident of Brethren Village, formerly a longtime resident of Ephrata, passed away Friday, April 4, 2014 at Lancaster General Hospital after a brief illness.

She was the wife of Carl R. Zimmerman and daughter of the late Luke H. and Helen F. (Sweigart) Sensenig.

Jacqueline was born in Ephrata and lived there most of her life. She was a graduate of Ephrata High School, Bucknell University, and the American Institute of Banking.

She was a retired Bank Manager and a former member of the American Business Women’s Club in Ephrata, West Earl Lioness Club, S. June Smith Center in Lancaster, and the Board of the American Institute of Banking &tstr; Lancaster Chapter.

In addition to her husband Carl, she is survived by one son: Craig L. Zimmerman, husband of Tina, of Witmer; two daughters: Lori A., wife of Ed Paparo of Ephrata and Jami L., wife of Stephen Simon of York; six grandchildren: Danelle Simon Newman of York, Brandi Paparo of Lancaster, Erin M. Zimmerman of Witmer, Kyle R. Simon of York, Dana B. Paparo of Lancaster, and Kayla F. Paparo, wife of Zachary Smith of Elizabethtown; four great-grandchildren; and one brother: Darryl L. Sensenig, husband of Mary Lou, of Mountville.

Services were held April 7 at Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, Ephrata, with the Reverend Keith Miller officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Fay L. Klopp, 76, of Sinking Spring, passed away Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at Manor Care.

She was born in Reinholds, daughter of the late Melvin B. and Verna M. (Lebo) Ochs and was the wife of the late Harry Klopp.

She loved stock car racing, flowers, gardening, and painting. She also loved animals, especially her cats and dogs. Fay worked as a machine operator for Keystone Nightwear.

She is survived by companion: Stuart Welker of Reinholds; a sister: Yvonne, wife of J. Richard Kern of Stevens; nieces: Deborah Lorditch of Denver, Melissa Kern of Newark, Del.; and a nephew: Perry, husband of Tracey Kern of Denver; five grand-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a brother, Jay B. Ochs.

William Mark Koch, 39, woodworker and candle maker, enjoyed football, NASCAR, fishing

William Mark Koch, 39, of Akron, passed away from complication due to MS, Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at his residence.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of William P. Koch of Lebanon and Diane B. (Rollman), wife of Jim Brubaker of Ephrata.

Mark was a woodworker, was very handy with electrical work, loved football, NASCAR, fishing and candle making.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his maternal grandparents: Robert and Alverta Rollman of Akron; paternal grandparents: William L. and Mary Koch of Lebanon; a sister: Michelle, wife of Joseph Musumeci of Akron; two brothers: Steven Koch of Leola, Scott Koch of Ephrata; two nieces: Crystal Connelly of Lititz, Adrienne Connelly of Akron.

Services were held April 5 at Stradling Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Jay Quirk officiating. Interment followed in the Center Church Cemetery.

Paul B. Ernst, 94, long-time Wolf Shoe worker, Orioles Lodge member, Phils fan

Paul B. Ernst, 94, formerly of Denver, passed away Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Lancashire Hall.

He was born in Denver to James and Edna (Beidler) Ernst and was the husband of the late Amanda C. (Sensenig) Ernst, who passed away February 8, 2007.

He was a lifetime member of the Oriole Lodge of Denver, and also enjoyed singing, fishing, crafts, entertaining friends in his garage in earlier years. Paul was well liked by everyone and was an avid Phillies baseball fan. Paul worked for 47 years before retiring from the A.N. Wolf Shoe Co., Denver.

Paul is survived by daughter: Lorraine E. Crouse of Denver; two grandchildren: seven great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother: Roy B. Ernst; a sister: Verna E. Gensemer; and a grandson: Richard Crouse.

Services were held April 8 at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver, with Reverend David R. Brumbaugh officiating. Interment followed in the Fairview Cemetery, Denver.

Alton H. ‘Bucky’ Powell, 92, WWII Seabee, carpenter, enjoyed spending time with family

Bucky Powell, 92, of Ephrata, entered into eternal rest Friday, April 4, 2014, at Ephrata Manor.

Born April 8, 1921 in Gordonville, Va., he was married for 67 years to the late Doris B. Powell.

Bucky served as a Seabee in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He graduated from Palmyra High, class of 1939, and worked as a carpenter. Bucky was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Ephrata. He loved to spend time with his family and watching sports.

He is survived by his son, David E. Powell; daughter: Suzanne Young; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his grandson: John Alton Powell.

A graveside service will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Church of Christ Homes Benevolent Fund, 30 North 31st St., Camp Hill, PA 17011.

Paul “Pappy” Frymyer, 85, of Lancaster, passed away April 5 Lancashire Hall following a two-month illness. Paul retired in 1994 after 30+ years at Thompson Corp. where he was the supervisor of Machine Maintenance. He served with the U.S. Army as a Corporal during the Korean Conflict. A son, Paul E. “Cork” Frymyer, fiancé of Michele R. Groff, lives in Brownstown.

 

Katie K. (Sensenig) Reiff, 85, of Lititz, passed April 5. Katie was a member of Meadow Valley Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference, Ephrata. She was a homemaker. Her daughter, Anna Mae, wife of Earl Reiff, resides in Ephrata.

 

Floice V. Taylor, 84, formerly of Brownstown, died April 1 at Moravian Manor. She worked as an assembler for the former Hubley Toy Company. She volunteered with the American Red Cross and enjoyed camping at Rehoboth Beach.

Patricia Eshelman, 82, of the Denver area, passed away Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Ephrata Manor.

She was born in Sinking Spring to the late Roy and Katie (Stricker) Daub and was the wife of Harry A. Eshelman, with whom she shared 62 years of marriage.

Patricia was a member of Swamp Christian Fellowship Church, Reinholds, where she sang in the choir for many years, was a part of the Willing Workers and played piano in Sunday school. She was a charter member of Reinholds Lioness Club. Patricia loved flower gardening, birds and had a soft heart for animals and anyone with special needs. Patricia retired from Galen’s of Ephrata after working there many years.

In addition to her husband, Patricia is survived by two daughters: Jolynn Miller of Wildwood, N.J., Julie, wife of Jeff Breon of Stevens; she was the beloved Nanny of: Tara, wife of Tony Leister of Lancaster, Jessica, wife of Roger Hennesey of Green Creek, N.J., Kim Marie Breon, fiancée of Dominic Mottillo of Elizabethtown, and Justin Miller of Wildwood, N.J.; four great-grandchildren: Joshua Romano, Sophia Leister, Evelyn Leister, and Brooklynn Miller; and a sister: Pauline Mateer of Ephrata.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, April 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut Street, Denver. An additional viewing will be held on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m., at the funeral home, followed by funeral services held at 11 a.m., with Pastor Craig Snow officiating. Interment will take place in the Pleasant View Cemetery.

Charles L. Hertzog, 67, U.S. Army vet, retired from Fleetwood Homes, enjoyed hunting

Charles “Chuck” “Chuckie” L. Hertzog, 67, of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, April 6, at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy after battling cancer for two years.

He was the beloved husband and soul mate of Joyce (Longenecker) Hertzog for almost 36 years.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late C. Lester and Cora (Hellinger) Hertzog. He was a 1965 graduate of Garden Spot High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Korea during the Vietnam era.

Chuck worked in the mobile home industry for more than 40 years. Most recently retiring after 20 years with Fleetwood Homes where he was an Assistant Material Control Manager. He was a member of the Adamstown VFW and the Log Cabin Hunting Club. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and hunting, especially hunting deer in North Carolina. But most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, teaching and supporting them.

He is survived in addition to his wife, by two daughters: Stephanie Hrubochak of Denver, and Sheldonna (Theodore) Holloway of Leola; four grandchildren: Sierra and Dylan Hrubochak, and Dagan and Skylar Holloway. Also surviving are two brothers: John (Jane) Hertzog of Fla., Tim Hertzog of Ephrata; and two sisters: Theda (Marvin) Bowman of Ephrata and Janice.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Barbara Schwankl.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Anthony E. Weaver, 25, of Blue Ball, died unexpectedly Monday, March 31, 2014 at his home.

Born in Ephrata, he was the son of Edwin M. Weaver of Denver and the late Sandra J. (Brubaker) Weaver.

Anthony worked as a fork lift operator at SuperValue in Denver. He enjoyed playing Scrabble and fishing with his father.

Surviving in addition to his father is a sister: Melissa Weaver of Denver.

Services were held April 5 at Petra Christian Fellowship, New Holland with the Reverend Titus Kauffman and the Reverend Jeremy Leaman officiating. Interment was in the Red Run Mennonite Cemetery.

Alice Martzall, 65, former Lancaster Farming employee, pro wresting fan

Alice Jane Martzall, 65, formerly of Manheim died Monday, March 24, 2014 at Lancashire Hall.

She was born in Reading to Helen Keiper Sechrist and the late Hugh Sechrist.

For 25 years Alice worked in the mailroom of Lancaster Farming for the Ephrata Review and Lancaster Newspapers, retiring in 2010. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and professional wrestling.

Surviving are her mother: Helen Sechrist; niece and nephew: Shelia and Allen Shanaman, all of Myerstown; her companion: John Menoskey; and his daughter: Teresa Menoskey, both of Manheim.

Alice was predeceased by her son: Michael Martzall; and sister: Carol Shanaman.

Estella McQuate, 97, formerly of Denver, died April 7, 2014, in Mifflin Center, Shillington.

Born in Vera Cruz, a daughter of the late Milton and Stella (Trostle) Buchter, she worked at Gerber Industries, Ephrata. She was the oldest life-member of Reinholds VFW Ladies Auxiliary and loved cross stitchery, playing cards, crafts, gardening and crossword puzzles.

Surviving is her daughter: Joyce E. (G. David) Wade, Stevens; grandchildren: Geoffrey Hassler, Curtis Hassler, Darryl Hassler, Lynette Hause, Ronita Buskirk, Renee Cammauf and John Wade; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister: Viola Moyer, Shillington; and brothers: Charles (Ruth) Buchter, Shillington and Leon (Catharine) Buchter, Wernersville.

Estella was predeceased by her companion, Harold Paul, and nine siblings.

Services were held April 11 from Good Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, Reamstown. Burial followed in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sinking Spring.

Earl E. Grant, Jr., 90, WWII vet, active in church, Boy Scouting, PennDOT foreman

Earl E. Grant, Jr. 90, of Ephrata, passed away Saturday, April 12, 2014, at home.

He was born in Ephrata to the late Earl Sr. and Helen (Dundore) Grant.

Earl was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran of the Central European Theatre Campaign, where he served as a medic in the 346th Infantry, 87th Division.

He was a member of the Muddy Creek Lutheran Church in Denver, the church council, and the Muddy Creek Lutheran Cemetery Board. He worked as a foreman for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, retiring in 1986.

Earl was very active in doing volunteer work at his church, and was a Merit Badge Counselor for Boy Scouts. He enjoyed doing paint by numbers, gardening, sporting events, yard work, and he especially enjoyed attending his 87th Division reunions. He loved spending time with his family, his ice cream and traveling.

Earl is survived by his wife of 73 years: Veona Arlene (Tothero) Grant, whom he married January 24, 1941; a son: Michael E., husband of Wanda (Hertzog) Grant of Denver; two daughters: Sherralynne G. Garman of Stevens, and Karen E., wife of Terry L. Good of Ephrata; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers: Robert Grant of Denver, and James, husband of Thelma Grant of Ephrata.

He was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren; and a brother: Kenneth Grant.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, April 17, 2014, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut Street, Denver. Funeral services will follow, with Pastor Tom Weber officiating. Interment will take place in the Muddy Creek Lutheran Cemetery.

Lorraine L. Sescilla, 42, of East Petersburg, died April 12, 2014 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

Born in Ephrata, Lorraine was the daughter of Joyce (Detweiler) Fasnacht of Ephrata and the late Ivan L. Fasnacht. She is survived by her loving husband Eric J. Sescilla. They were married April 20, 2002 in Akron Park.

Lorraine enjoyed sewing, and listening to country music. She loved being involved in her two sons’ school and sports activities. She worked in the Human Resources Department for the Liquor Control Board for 13 years. Her last place of employment was at Oregon Dairy in the office department.

In addition to her husband and mother, she is survived by her two sons: Johnathan and Jeremy Sescilla; and her brother: Brian Fasnacht, husband of Aundrea.

She was preceded in death by her sister: Denise A. Fasnacht.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 16 at Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, with Rev. Leo Goodman officiating. A viewing will be held at the funeral home one hour prior to the service Interment will be in Heidelberg Church of the Brethren Cemetery, in Lebanon County.

Stena Rosene “Teenie” McCarty, 83, Ephrata, died April 8, 2014, in Ephrata Manor.

Born in Martindale, a daughter of George L. and Edith M. (Ream) Withers, she was a 1948 Ephrata HS graduate and attended Lancaster Business College. Stena was a buyer at Ephrata Community Hospital for 14 years and volunteered in the gift shop after retirement. Earlier she worked for Sperry New Holland and Montgomery Ward. Stena was Worthy Matron 1961-62 and 63-year member of Cloister Chapter #406 Order of Eastern Star, now Lititz Springs. In 1968, she brought the first Chapter of International Order of Rainbow Girls to Lancaster County and served as Mother Advisor and board chairman for 18 years. A member of La Nobels Card Club, she was an avid NASCAR fan and loved cats. Stena was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving is her brother: George Ream Withers, Shillington; and cousins.

Her husband, Willis H. McCarty, predeceased her.

Services were held April 12 from Good Funeral Home, Reamstown. She was interred in Bergstrasse Cemetery, Ephrata. Rather than flowers, contributions to Humane League of Lanc. Co., 2195 Lincoln Highway E., Lancaster, PA 17602.
