Joseph Michael Gallo, 46, of Leola, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Lancaster General Hospital.

He was born in Philadelphia, the son of Robert F. Gallo and the late Rita (Karbow) Gallo.

Joe especially enjoyed his family and helping people. He was a Lionel Train collector, a Philadelphia Eagles fan, and enjoyed playing billiards. He was a real lover of animals, especially his dog, Colby. He worked as a HVAC Technician for various companies in the area.

Surviving are, his father: Robert F. Gallo and companion Carolyn Binder of Millsboro, Del.; a son: Joseph Michael Gallo Jr., at home, a daughter, Nicole, companion of James M. Giuca of Ephrata; a grandson: Anthony; companion: Lori Rack, at home; a sister: Geraldine Hynes of Cherry Hill, N.J.; a niece: Melissa Gallo of Pemberton, N.J.; a nephew: Sean Hynes of Cherry Hill, N.J.; an uncle: Robert Karbow of Philadelphia; and former wife: Lisa M. Parks of Ephrata.

In addition to his mother; he was preceded in death by a brother: Robert Gallo.

Peggy Lou Hess 77, EHS class of ‘54, registered nurse at Warwick High School

Peggy Lou Hess, 77, of Lititz, passed away Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Luther Acres.

She was born in Ephrata to Margaret (Doster) and the late Frank Eckhart and was the wife of the late James G. Hess who passed away in 2004.

Peggy was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church, Ephrata. She was a 1954 graduate of EphrataHigh School, a graduate of the Jefferson School of Nursing and of Millersville University. During her working years, she was a registered nurse at the Warwick High School. She was an avid skier and enjoyed fishing, camping and wildflower gardening with her husband.

She is survived by her two daughters: Jean A. Hess, wife of Michael Devereux of Jericho, Vt. and L. Susan, wife of Peter Wright of Severna Park, Md.; and six granddaughters.

Services were held March 17 at SalemLutheranChurch, Ephrata, with Rev. Jeffrey Goodman officiating. A private interment took place in the LincolnCemetery.

Mabert C. Mellinger 89, nurse at Ephrata Community Hospital, avid reader, card player

Mabert C. Mellinger, 89, of Lititz, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2014, at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Lancaster to the late William and Miriam (Hipple) Carter and was the wife of the late Richard E. Mellinger.

Mabert graduated from Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. She worked at Lancaster General Hospital and Ephrata Community Hospital as an RN and private duty nurse. Mabert enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a member of HolyTrinityLutheranChurch, Ephrata, a member of Golden Years Club, an avid reader and enjoyed playing cards.

Mabert is survived by a son: Kenneth R. Mellinger of Ephrata; daughter: Suzanne E., wife of Lew K. Bachman of Newmanstown; two grandchildren: Kenneth Richard Mellinger, Jr., Charles N. Mellinger; three great-grandchildren: Alayna K. Mellinger; Carine L. Mellinger, Gabriel C. Mellinger; brother: Robert S. Carter of Lebanon; and a companion: Walter Schload of Lititz.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata. An additional viewing will be held on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m., at Stradling Funeral Home, Ephrata, followed by funeral services with Rev. Henry E. Herbener officiating. Interment will take place in the LincolnCemetery.

Craig R. Miller 54, Ephrata, church chairman, was 31-year Horning Dodge employee

Craig R. Miller, 54, of Ephrata, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Hospice & Community Care, MountJoy.

He was born in Harrisburg, to Sara (Ritter) Miller of Harrisburg and the late Charles R. Miller. Craig was the husband of Jessi Miller, with whom he shared 31 years of marriage.

He was a member of Calvary Church, Lancaster. Through the years he served in various positions within the community. He was the church chairman while a member of the Lancaster Evangelical Free Church of Lititz and was actively involved with his daughter’s travel softball team, the PA Power, for many years.

Craig started his working career with the former Horning Dodge of New Holland (presently the New Holland Auto Group) where he held various positions over the past 31 years. He was presently a commercial sales account manager.

In addition to his mother and wife, Craig is survived by two sons and a daughter: Travis, husband of Sarah Miller of Waukegan, Ill.; Chase, husband of Gretel Miller of Royersford; and Joanie Miller, a junior at ConestogaValleyHigh School. He is also survived by his granddaughter: Helen Rose Miller; and a sister: Beth, wife of Joe Soutner of Millerstown.

Services were held March 18 at CalvaryChurch, Lancaster, with Pastor John Frye officiating. A private interment took place at Witness Park, Lititz.

Brian L. Rutt, 47, of Ephrata, died Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Ephrata Community Hospital after a brief illness.

He was the husband of Alicia A. “Lisa” (Detwiler) Rutt. Brian worked as a truck driver for PennDOT, Ephrata.

Born January 7, 1967 in Ephrata, he was the son of Mary Jane (Smith) Steffy married to Paul, of Ephrata and the late Donald L. Rutt.

Also surviving are three children: Brian L., Jr., Sam and Debbie; three stepchildren: Ed, Michael and Larry; and a brother: Donald.

Galen S. Bixler 90, Stevens, WWII veteran, was life member of rod and gun club

Galen S. Bixler, 90, Adamstown, died March 16, 2014, in Denver Health & Rehabilitation Center, Stevens.

Born in West Lawn, a son of the late Martin L. and Edna M. (Sweigart) Bixler, he was the husband of Georgean (Youndt) Bixler for 60 years.

Galen was a WWII Navy veteran serving in the Pacific and worked 30 years for Carpenter Technologies, Reading. He was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Swartzville, a life-member of the Adamstown VFW and Rod & Gun Club and enjoyed archery hunting.

Also surviving is his son: Craig Y. Bixler, Reading, fiancé of Gina Hackman; grandsons: David and Brad; and a sister: Ruth S. Sulima, Rockledge, Fla.

Siblings Catherine Schlegel and Warren Bixler predeceased him.

A memorial celebration of Galen’s life will be held Friday, March 21, at 11 a.m. from Peace UCC, 37 E. Swartzville Rd., Denver, with his pastor, The Rev. William E. Hoch, officiating. Private inurnment in CedarGroveCemetery, Adamstown. Rather than flowers, contributions may be sent to the church.

Gary L. Himelwright, Jr., 51, of Lancaster, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Rebecca Blevins Himelwright, of Lancaster, and the late Gary L. Himelwright Sr., who passed away in 2013.

Gary had worked as a cook at the Riverside Club, was a NASCAR and Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and enjoyed fishing with his father. He was a member of Ephrata Area Church of Christ.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his brother: Keith A. Himelwright.

Carole V. Vellinga 66, enjoyed French cooking and baking; secretary for NJ office

Carole V. Vellinga, 66, of Reinholds, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was born in Neptune, N.J., to the late Harvey W. and Virginia V. (Gerbig) Hoenge and was the wife of Michael Vellinga, with whom she shared 10 years of marriage this past February.

Carole was of the Catholic faith and worked as a secretary for the New Jersey State unemployment office. She enjoyed French cooking and baking.

In addition to her husband, Carole is survived by a sister: Janice Hendricks of Denver.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. A private interment will take place in the Memory Gardens Memorial Cemetery.

Carlton Maynard Partridge 79, Zenith salesman, Lancaster Orchestra member, avid bowler

Carlton Maynard Partridge, 79, of Leola, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014, at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy.

Born March 11, 1934, in Buffalo, NY, he was son of the late Clarence and Edythe (Haight) Partridge.

He was a member of EphrataChurch of the Nazarene. Mr. Partridge was a U.S. Army veteran, having served from 1956-1957. Carlton worked as a Salesman at Zenith. He was also a member of the Lancaster Senior Orchestra and played the saxophone and keyboard. An avid bowler, he bowled three 300 games.

Surviving are his loving wife: Marion (Pinkel) Partridge; two sons: William Partridge and wife, Karen, and James Partridge and wife, Melissa; a daughter: Deborah Birdsall and husband, Joe; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Keith Partridge; and a nephew: John Partridge.

Robert M. Benn 87, fiddler since age three, WWII vet, former Ephrata HS employee

Robert M. Benn, 87, of Wernersville, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014, at his home.

He was born in Bellwood to the late Walter and Essie (Jackson) Benn and was the husband of Dorothy M. (Hollen) Benn, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage this past January.

Robert was a member of Wiest Memorial UM Church in Schoeneck where he formerly served as the choir director. A graduate of Bellwood High School class of 1945, a WWII veteran of the US Army and a member of the Cloister Post #429 American Legion in Ephrata. Robert started playing the fiddle at age three and was in a group called “Happy Trio.” He also enjoyed camping and traveling, visiting 75 percent of the United States.

During his working years, Robert worked for the former Pennfield Corp., Ephrata, was a custodian for CocalicoSchool District and was last employed by Latshaw Bros. Concrete, Denver.

In addition to his wife, Robert is survived by his children: Susan J.B., wife of Joseph Berardi of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Thomas R., husband of Kim Benn of Mohnton, Timothy R., husband of Coleen Benn of West Branch, Mich., Joan M., wife of Larry Latshaw of Wernersville, Bonnie J., wife of David Spotts of Lemont; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; siblings: Verna, wife of Earl Detwiler of Clearfield, Ronald, husband of Jean Benn of Bellwood, Pearl Campbell of Lake Elsinore, Calif., and George Benn of Tonawanda, N.Y..

He was preceded in death by a daughter: Nancy Ann Benn; and five siblings: Dorothy Detwiler, Charles Benn, Esther Benn, Melvin Benn and Ralph Benn.

Richard L. Reeser 78, magisterial district judge, owned Forney Co., civic leader

Richard L. Reeser, 78, of Leola, passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Lancaster General Hospital.

He was born in White Horse to the late Kurtz and Dorothy (Hillard) Reeser and was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Miller) Reeser, with whom he shared 24 years of marriage before her passing in 1991.

Richard earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from PennState and served as a Magisterial District Judge for over 50 years. Owner of JG Forney Company, a real estate and insurance brokerage, he was involved in numerous civic and fraternal organizations. From 1955-1957, he served his country in the United States Army. An avid hunter, Richard also enjoyed gardening and boating.

Richard is survived by his children: Denise Commins, fiancee of Mike Dal Pezzo of Lancaster, Renee, wife of Mike Zelnick of Los Angeles, and Scott, husband of Michelle (Styer) Reeser of Adamstown; six grandchildren: Ian Commins, Meredith Commins, Matthew Zelnick, Michele Zelnick, and twins Lisabeth and Paige Reeser.

In addition to his wife and parents; he was preceded in death by three siblings: Harold Reeser, Joyce Wismer and Donald Reeser.

Services were held March 26 at Evangelical United Methodist Church, New Holland, with Rev. Charles A. Walker and Rev. Kathryn Kuhn officiating. Interment followed in the Evangelical United Methodist Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard. Dorothy B. Leed, 96, Denver, died March 18, 2014, in Ephrata Community Hospital.

Born in Denver, a daughter of the late Martin and Ellen (Border) Firestone, her husband, R. Warren Leed, died July 26, 1989.

A member of St. John’sUnitedChurch of Christ, Denver, she worked for F&M Hat Company, Denver, and as housekeeper for Haskell Roberts, MD, Denver. Dorothy cherished her family and loved animals and gardening.

Surviving is a son, Barry L. (Linda Texter) Leed, Ephrata; grandchildren: Debra Wolf, Kevin Leed and Kim Willis; great-grandchildren: Mason, Heather, Aspen, Caidyn, Kennedy, Madison, Brennan, Clark and Michael; great-great-grandchildren: Damion, Aston, Edwin and Warren; and brother: Richard Firestone, Denver.

She was predeceased by a daughter: Shirley Y. Dickersheid; and siblings: Eugene, Robert, Benjamin, Pauline, Ray and Martin Luther Firestone.

Donna Frey, 69, of Ephrata, passed away Friday, March 21, 2014, at Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was born in Lancaster to the late William B. and Betty (Becker) Knier.

Donna worked as a factory worker for Cinderella Knitting. She was a big Elvis Presley fan and loved horses.

Donna is survived by a daughter: Danielle Frey of Ephrata; two sons: David Frey of Arkansas and Daniel Frey of Manheim; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild and six siblings.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Avenue, Ephrata. Alverta J. Burkhart, 85, of Reinholds, passed away Monday, March 17, 2014, at the Mifflin Center, Shillington.

She was born in BrecknockTownship to the late William Paul and Ellen A. (Ziegler) Seifrit and was the wife of the late Richard Burkhart.

Alverta was a member of the MuddyCreekLutheranChurch, Denver, where she had served as treasurer for many years. She was a self-employed beautician for 30 years and was an avid NASCAR fan.

She is survived by a son: Richard K., husband of Donna (Loht) Burkhart of Mohnton; four grandchildren: Troy L. Burkhart of Phoenixville, Brandon C. Burkhart of Colorado, Jonathan R. Burkhart of Mohnton, Ranae Meiskey Johnson of Delaware; two great-grandchildren: Alexandra and Henry Burkhart.

Harold E. Keppley Sr., 80, of Brownstown, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at his residence.

He was born in Schaefferstown to the late Clarence and Mary (Buchter) Keppley and was the husband of Ruth (Loose) Keppley with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.

Harold worked for Ready Mix as a concrete truck driver for 40 years and with his son, at Park Place Automotive, Inc. for 10 years. His pride in life were his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, going to the mountains and micro midget races.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son: Harold Jr., husband of Robin (Kinsey) Keppley of Brownstown; three daughters: Connie, wife of Larry Keller of Lititz, Bonnie, wife of Daniel Gerz of Strasburg, Robin, wife of Dave Dissinger of Brownstown; 11 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 8 siblings.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings.

Caroline E. Huber, 90, of Manheim, died March 17 at the Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in EphrataTownship, she had a life-long passion for her family and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Ruth H. Reed, 70, of Northampton, died March 14 at her home. She was employed by Catasauqua Area School District as the School Nurse for the Middle School and Senior High School for 27 years before retiring in 2003. Her sister, Irene, wife of Jay Zimmerman, resides in Denver.

Pauline R. Knauer 74, Stevens, owned catering service, DNH nurses aid, avid reader

Pauline R. Knauer, 74, of Stevens, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, at her home.

She was born in New Holland, to the late Clarence and Katie (Reich) Zoll. Pauline was the wife of William Knauer, with whom she shared 30 years of marriage.

During her working years, Pauline worked as a nurses’ aide for Denver Nursing home for 10 years. She also owned her own food catering service. Pauline enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She also enjoyed reading books and going to the mountains in PotterCounty.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son: Robert, husband of Dolores (Boyer) Martin of Ephrata; two step sons: Rick Knauer of Denver, Steve Knauer of Stevens; a step daughter: Tammy, wife of Brett Emerich of Manheim Twp.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother: Ben, husband of Sylvia Zoll of Akron; and sister: Renie, wife of Donald Frank of Denver.

She was preceded in death by four brothers: Mell, Ivan, Clarence and Leon Zoll; and a sister: Wile Mae Hurst.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, March 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut Street, Denver. An additional viewing will be held on March 27, from 10 to 11 a.m., from the funeral home, followed by funeral services held at 11 a.m., with Pastor Eric Marshall officiating. Irene S. Sauder, 67, of Ephrata, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, March 22, 2014, at Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was born in New Holland to the late David and Esther (Stoltzfus) Musselman. Irene was the wife of Ken Sauder, with whom she shared 46 years of marriage.

Irene was a member of EphrataUnitedZionChurch, Ephrata. She loved spending time with her family and doting on her grandchildren. She enjoyed doing puzzles, going to the mountains and trips to the beach with the girls. Irene worked as a manager for Shady Maple Smorgasbord.

In addition to her husband and parents, Irene is survived by two daughters: Linda, wife of Steve Ludwig of Denver, and Lisa Means of Ephrata; two grandchildren: Craig Means, fiancé of Kelsey Martin, and Miranda Means; four brothers: Raymond, Harold, John and David Jr. Musselman; four sisters: Dolores and Patricia Musselman, Alice Reiff and Phyllis Newswanger.

She was preceded in death by a brother: Amos.

Funeral services will be held on at 11 am, Thursday, March 27, at the EphrataUnitedZionChurch, 408 East Fulton Street, Ephrata, with Pastor Jay Showalter officiating. Interment will take place in the HahnstownUnitedZionCemetery.

Irvin Firestone Jr. 82, concrete mason, Korean war vet, enjoyed mushroom hunting

Irvin Firestone Jr., 82, of Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at the EphrataCommunityHospital.

He was born in Cocalico to the late Irvin and Beda (Brubaker) Firestone and was the companion of Ruth E. Heck for almost 50 years.

Irvin retired in 1991, from Stief Concrete Work Inc., of New Holland as a concrete mason. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. His hobbies included gardening, mushroom hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

In addition to his companion, he is survived by his step sons whom he helped raise: Rick Heck of Conestoga, Dale Heck of Hopeland, Ronald Heck of Middletown; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Josephine, wife of Walter Wenrich of Ephrata and Pearl I. Firestone of Ephrata.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step daughter: Debra Fort; and five brothers: Haskell, William, Harry, Earl and Albert Firestone.

Services were held March 28 at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Ronald Good officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Herbert W. Gelsinger 87, Korean war veteran, Rosenau worker, retired carpenter, cat lover

Herbert W. Gelsinger, 87, of Reinholds, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at EphrataCommunityHospital.

He was born in Vinemont, son to the late Harry and Carrie Gelsinger and step-mother, the late Bessie Gelsinger, and was the husband of Margaret M. (Moyer) Gelsinger, with whom he would have celebrated 59 years of marriage on May 21.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Germany during the Korean War. He was a member of the Reinholds VFW. He enjoyed woodworking and flowers and especially loved his cats. Earlier in his career Herbert worked for Rosenau Apparel. He retired a carpenter for Flying Hills construction and afterwards worked for King Quality Foods.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son: Brian L., husband of Grelita Gelsinger of Surprise, Ariz.; a daughter: Beverly A., wife of Dennis Zimmerman of Sabinsville, Pa.; a grandson: Gregory L. Gelsinger; a great-grandson: Zachary; and two sisters: Arlene Ansel and Kathrine Kopp.

Services were held April 1 at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver, with Rev. Timothy L. Craven officiating. Interment took place in the PleasantViewCemetery.
