Jerry Lynn Schmuck, 74, Reinholds, father of four, worked at United Sleepwear, liked old cars

Jerry Lynn Schmuck, 74, of Reinholds, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019 at the Reading Hospital after a brief illness.

Jerry was born in Stevens, son of the late Charles L. and Verna (Hoffert) Schmuck.

He is survived by four children: Wendy, Kim, Tammy, and Dawn; six siblings: Laurel, Lee, Charles Jr., Marvin, Clair, and John; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his twin brother: Jay; his brother: Galen; and two sisters: Shirley and Linda.

Jerry worked for United Sleepwear in Denver, PA. He loved old cars and motorcycles.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Emma Ruth Felpel, 89, Akron, Stumptown Menn. member, mother of three and Re-Uzit volunteer

Emma Ruth Felpel, 89, of Akron, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, at her home.

She was born in East Earl Township to the late Ivan M. and Eva Z. (Martin) Bowman, and was the wife of the late Melvin B. Felpel, who passed away in 2011.

Emma was a member of Stumptown Mennonite Church, Bird-in-Hand. She was a volunteer and former board member of the Ephrata Re-Uzit Shop.

She is survived by two sons: M. Douglas, husband of Patricia (Patches) Felpel of Ephrata; James, husband of Ester (Moreno) Felpel of Coatesville; a daughter: Judy, wife of Delbert Martin of Ephrata; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Clair, husband of Ruth (Musser) Bowman of Bowmansville; Wilmer, husband of Naomi (Martin) Bowman of Narvon; and a sister-in-law: Irma (Ebersole) Bowman of Akron.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a brother: Earl Bowman.

A viewing will be held, Friday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Bird-in-Hand. An additional viewing will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the church, followed by her funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment will take place in the Stumptown Mennonite Cemetery.

Pauline C. Fenstermacher, 87, Ephrata Cloister tour guide, enjoyed cross stitch and crochet

Pauline C. Fenstermacher, 87, of Ephrata, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019, at Ephrata Manor.

She was born in Martindale to the late Adam T. and Ada S. (Sensenig) Crills, and was the wife of the late Christ Fenstermacher, who passed away in July 1969.

Her last years, were spent with Richard Reinhold who passed away five years ago. They had a very happy life together for several years before he passed away and she suffered from dementia.

Pauline was a tour guide for the Ephrata Cloister. She enjoyed cross stitch and crochet.

Pauline is survived by a son: Rodney, husband of Jeralyn Fenstermacher of Lititz; and three grandchildren: Brad, Chris, and Tom.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Carl and Ray Crills.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 16 at 10 a.m. at the Donecker Chapel at Ephrata Manor, 99 Bethany Road, Ephrata, with Pastor Rob Eshelman officiating. Interment will take place in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Noah S. Hurst, 89, CCF deacon, Paul B. worker, enjoyed auctions, gospel music

Noah S. Hurst, 89, of Ephrata, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019, at home.

He was born in Ephrata to the late Jacob M. and Lydia Ann (Sensenig) Hurst, and was the husband of Mary (Graybill) Hurst, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage.

He was a member of Crossroads Community Fellowship, where he was an ordained deacon, song leader and Sunday school teacher. He had a passion for serving Christ and was committed to helping others.

Noah was a heavy equipment operator and truck driver. For the last 15 years he was a sales clerk at Paul B. Zimmerman. He enjoyed listening to gospel music, gardening and attending auctions. His family was the joy of his life.

In addition to his wife, Noah is survived by three sons: Ray N., husband of Brenda (Martin) Hurst of Denver; Kenneth L., husband of Marion (Schultz) Hurst of Lock Haven; Kevin L., husband of Cara (Longacre) Hurst of Conestoga; two daughters: Sharon K., wife of Marlin Harnish of Stevens; Janelle M., wife of Ricardo Mazariegos of Churchville, Va.; two sisters: Eva S. Groff of Lititz, Mabel S. Weaver of New Holland; 19 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers: Clarence S., John S., Paul S. and Raymond S. Hurst; one sister: Arlene S. High; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Friday, March 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Crossroads Community Fellowship, 1060 E. Newport Road, Lititz. An additional viewing will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church, followed by funeral services at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Kyle Buckwalter and Pastor Nelson Martin officiating. Interment will take place in the adjoining Hess Mennonite Cemetery.

John S. Kurtz, 91, Ephrata, Favorite Mfg. partner, woodcarver, Groffdale Menn. member

John S. Kurtz, 91, of Ephrata, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019 at Fairmount Homes.

He was the husband of the late Louella H. Rutt Kurtz, who died in 2009. Born in East Earl Township, he was the son of the late Aaron H. and Edna B. Sensenig Kurtz.

John spent his career in the poultry manufacturing industry and was a partner in Favorite Manufacturing with his brothers. John enjoyed gardening and woodcarving and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Groffdale Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference.

Surviving is a daughter: Barbara, wife of Richard Farneth of Lititz; three sons: Melvin, husband of Judy Horst Kurtz of New Holland; John, husband of Doris Weaver Kurtz of Stevens; and Linford Kurtz of Farmersville; five grandchildren: Jessica Kurtz Herlein, wife of Brad Herlein; Brandon, husband of Sheila Weaver Kurtz; Rebecca Farneth; Jeremy, husband of Brittany Hurst Kurtz; and Jeffrey Kurtz; four great-grandchildren; two brothers: Aaron S., husband of Janet Landis Kurtz of New Holland; and Willis S., husband of Ann Marie Martin Kurtz of Ephrata; and three sisters: Jane S., wife of Melvin M. Nolt of Richland; Vera S. Kurtz of New Holland; and Edna S., wife of Glenn Shonk of Ephrata.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Norman S. Kurtz; and by a sister: Elva S. Zeiset.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 28 at 9 a.m. at Fairmount Homes Wheat Ridge Chapel, 333 Wheat Ridge Drive, Ephrata, with further services at 9:30 a.m. at Groffdale Mennonite Church, with the Bishop Curvin Z. Zimmerman officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Viewing will be held at the Wheat Ridge Chapel on Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 p.m. Kindly omit flowers.

Marvin A. Holcombe, 97, WWII vet, railroad brakeman, night watchman at Woodstream, avid golfer

Marvin A. Holcombe, 97, of Ephrata, passed away on Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, at Wyomissing Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born in Courtland, Va., to the late Clifton J. and Gaberial E. (Lankford) Holcombe, and was the husband of the late Dorothy (Hagy) Stuber Holcombe, and his first wife, the late Jimmie Holcombe.

A member of Lititz Church of the Brethren, Marvin was a brakeman for the railroad. After retirement, he was a night watchman at Woodstream and a pizza delivery man for Wild Wings. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. and the Army serving during World War II. He was also an avid golfer until age 92.

Marvin is survived by a daughter: Pam Gavity of New York; two stepsons: Lester, husband of Terry Stuber of Ephrata; Thomas, husband of June Stuber of Schoeneck; two stepdaughters: Rose, wife of Fred Miller of Lititz; Linda, wife of Philip Gladfelter of Schoeneck; a sister: Willis, wife of J. Clifon Barnes of Franklin, Va.; a grandson: James D. Gavity; 11 step-grandchildren; 18 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wives and parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters: Flora Simone, Bonnie Battle, Doris Bradshaw, Dawn H. Wright; and two brothers: Braxton Holcombe, C.J. Holcombe.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 1 at 2:30 p.m. at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Deborah S. Metzler, 63, Worship Center member, mother of three, enjoyed thrifting, genealogy

Deborah S. Metzler, 63, of Ephrata and Denver, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2019.

She was a daughter of the late George and Shirley (Rutt) Metzler.

Debbie was an active member of the Worship Center in Leola, where she often attended the ladies’ Bible study. Her favorite hobby was thrifting, enjoying the treasures she’d find at local thrift stores and yard sales. Debbie was the family historian and had great interest in genealogy.

She is survived by three children: Joel H. Fasnacht IV of Ephrata, Melissa J. Hart of West Lawn, and Eric M. Graham of Lititz; six grandchildren: Lundi, Ryker, Aubrie, Evan, Joel V and Timothy; and two siblings: Pamela Givler and George Metzler Jr.

Debbie is predeceased by her sister: Cynthia Haebler.

Services are private.

Ryan P. Ford, 27, of Ephrata, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at Lancaster General Hospital.

He was born in Lancaster to Sharon A. Adams and Garry L. Ford.

Ryan was a news carrier for Lancaster Newspapers. He enjoyed playing guitar which he was self-taught just by sound. He loved his children with all of his heart, listening to music, drawing and spending time with family.

In addition to his parents, Ryan is survived by his daughter: Sonya Faye Ford; and son: Maxwell Glenn Ford; two sisters: Heather, wife of Will Barr; Jessica, wife of Ray Horning, both of Ephrata; his nephews: Evan, William, Trace, Bennett and Keller; numerous aunts and uncles; and his cat, Oliver.

He was preceded in death by his uncle: Glenn Ford; grandmother: Joan Ford; and grandfather, Woodrow Adams.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Jody Garner Deimler, 65, EHS grad, survived by two sons, Calvary Church member, enjoyed OCMD

Jody Garner Deimler, 65, of Lititz, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, at Lancaster Regional Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

She was the daughter of the late William and Audrey (Nagle) Garner.

She was a 1971 graduate of Ephrata High School. She attended Calvary Church in Lancaster, where she enjoyed attending Bible study classes. She also enjoyed raising her two cockatiels, reading and vacationing at Ocean City, Md.

Jody is survived by two sons: Sean Lees of Ephrata; and Shane, husband of Jenny Lees, of Texas; a sister: Susan Shue; and a brother: David, husband of Beth Garner, both of Ephrata; and six grandchildren. She is also survived by many nephews and nieces.

A memorial service will take place at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, PA on March 4 at 11 a.m. Burial will be private

Walter ‘Joe’ F. Benning, 85, Science Press retiree, member of OMPH, enjoyed dining out, Steelers

Walter “Joe” F. Benning, 85, of Ephrata, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in Millvale to the late Daniel and Agnes (Fredrick) Benning, and was the husband of Beverly A. (Bartkins) Benning, with whom he shared 62 years of marriage.

A member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Walter was a printer for Science Press for 40 years before retiring and worked for Manheim Auto Auction for 15 years. He was a lifelong Steelers fan and enjoyed golfing. He loved to dine out and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, Walter is survived by three children: Joyce (Joy) A. Benning-Page; Jeff J., husband of Carol Benning; Sandra J., wife of Dale Anderson; three grandchildren: Myranda R. Wagner, Caleb W. Wagner, Mikayla J. Benning; two sisters: Eleanor Williams, Virginia Andrews; and a brother: Edward Benning.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, Feb. 28, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebration at 11 a.m. at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, 320 Church Ave., Ephrata, with the Rev. Fr. John J. McLoughlin, C.SS.R officiating. Final commendation and farewell will be private at the convenience of the family.

Jeffrey O. Dissinger, 51, of Allentown, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019 at the Cedar Crest Lehigh Valley Hospital.

Born in Ephrata on Oct. 3, 1967, Jeffrey was a son of Mildred B. (Good) Dissinger and the late Richard J. Dissinger.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by daughters: Samantha Dissinger and Jasmine Ford; brothers: Daryl and Glen; sisters: Diane, Joann, and Deb; his grand-dog: Duke; and former companion: Kathy Ayers.

He was preceded in death by his brother: Leonard.

A gathering will be held at Jeffrey’s home on Monday, March 4 at 5 p.m.; and a celebration of life will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5 at Harvest Fellowship Church, 34 W. Church St., Stevens.

Deaths of Local Interest – March 6, 2019

Carole Ann Kinney, 76, of Mount Joy, passed away on Feb. 25 at Lancaster General Hospital. Carole was a graduate of Grady High School in Atlanta. She was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church in Elizabethtown. Being a loving wife, mother and grandmother, family and friendships were everything to Carole. Her daily lunch date and shopping trips with her husband John will be greatly missed. Her daughter, Marnie Becker, wife of Daniel, lives in Reinholds.

Menno K. “Shorty” Stoltzfus, 89, of Landis Homes, Lititz, formerly of Hollsopple, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 28. A carpenter by trade, Mr. Stoltzfus was a member of the East Petersburg Mennonite Church. He enjoyed reading, gardening and socializing. His son, Milton, married to Lois Brubaker Stoltzfus, lives in Ephrata.

Lisa (Heft) Pardus, 51, Lititz, was GSHS grad, public defender’s office clerk, animal lover

Loved by all who knew her well, Lisa (Heft) Pardus, 51, of Lititz, passed away Feb. 18, 2019 after a brief illness.

She was the daughter of Bonnie Heft of Leesburg, Fla., and David Hileman of Tyrone.

She was a 1985 graduate of Garden Spot High School, where she played trumpet in the band, and was active in FFA and 4-H.

Lisa graduated from HACC as a paralegal, and from St. Leo’s University with a degree in criminal justice. She worked as a clerk in the public defender’s office in Lancaster. She attended Lititz Trinity Church. An animal lover, she enjoyed running her dog, Hershey, through agility obstacle courses.

In addition to her parents, Lisa is survived by her sister: Michelle Beserock of Leesburg, Fla.; and two brothers: Daniel Hileman of Quarryville and Edward Heft of Gordonville; and her beloved dogs: Hershey, Schoene, and Freckles.

A memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 30, at 11 a.m. at Lititz Trinity Church, 44 W. Orange St., Lititz. She will be interred in Grandview Cemetery, Altoona.

The world will be a darker place without her sunny smile.

I. Cathryn Sensenig, 92, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019 at Zerbe Retirement Community in Narvon.

She was the wife of the late Russell I. Sensenig who died in 2000. Born in Bowmansville, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Katie Good Burkhart.

Cathryn was a homemaker and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ephrata. She was an accomplished pianist and sang in many church choirs. Her interests included quilting and playing cards.

Surviving are two sons: Arthur L., husband of Barbara A. Zimmerman Sensenig of Silver Spring, Md.; and Daryl D. Sensenig, husband of Hollis Stambaugh Butterworth of Odenton, Md.; a daughter: Lucinda K., wife of Willoughby Dobbs of Rockville, Md; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers: Arthur Lloyd Burkhart and William Isaac Burkhart.

Services were held March 4 at Eckenroth Funeral Home, Terre Hill, with her grandson, The Rev. David A. Sensenig officiating. Interment was in the Terre Hill Cemetery.

James John Kuhlman, 92, WWII cryptologist, retired Erie Insurance agent, avid model railroader

James John Kuhlman, 92, of Denver, passed away peacefully on Feb. 23, 2019 at Columbia Cottage, surrounded by his loving family.

He was the husband of Margaret Elizabeth (Frank) Kuhlman, to whom he was married for 65 years. Born Aug. 13, 1926 in Reading, he was the son of the late Philip H. and Gertrude M. (Romig) Kuhlman.

James was a 1944 graduate of Reading High School, and a graduate of Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He was employed as an insurance agent with Erie Insurance for many years, retiring in 1998.

James was a member of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, Denver. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a cryptologist technician, stationed in the South Pacific. He was a mason with Masonic Lodge #62. An avid model railroader, he was a longtime member of the Scottish Rite Train Club.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are his four sons: James J. Kuhlman Jr., husband of Vickie Kuhlman of Roanoke, Va.; David F., husband of Karen Kuhlman of Birdsboro; Peter T. Kuhlman of Muhlenberg Township; and Robert A. Kuhlman of Denver. There are also six grandchildren: Kristin LaFave, Ashley Kuhlman, Thomas Kuhlman, Bradley Kuhlman, Stephanie Lewis and Lindsey Kuhlman; and two great-grandchildren: Kayleigh LaFave and Olivia LaFave.

James was preceded in death by two sisters: Jane Schneider and Mary Kuhlman.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, March 8, at 11 a.m. at Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, 11 S. Muddy Creek Road, Denver. A Masonic service will be held at the church at 9:30 a.m. followed by a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m.

Edwin A. Spackman Sr., 87, Stevens, had a kind word for everyone, was the heart of his family

Edwin “Ed” A. Spackman Sr. passed away at age 87 in his home in Stevens on Feb. 22, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Lancaster on March 25, 1931, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife: Joanne; as well as his daughter: Deborah Spackman; and his sons: Edwin Spackman Jr. and Thomas Spackman.

Ed is survived by his daughter: Denise Dochterman; his grandchildren: Jonathan Dochterman, Daniel Dochterman, Andrew Dochterman, Katie Moore, Rebecca Ober, Jody Spackman, and Crystal Weaver; as well as several great-grandchildren.

Often called Daddy or Pap, he loved spending time with his family, having them visit for Sunday dinners and every holiday. He was the heart of the family and is dearly missed. Kind and friendly to all he met, everyone that knew Ed loved him and had only good things to say about him.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial serviced celebrating Ed’s life at East Cocalico Church of the Brethren, located at 4 Bunker Hill Road, Reamstown at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 16.

Jeffrey A. Shaner, 52, of Ephrata, passed away peacefully on Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, at Hospice & Community Care in Mount Joy.

Jeff enjoyed spending time with his Uncle Rick; best friend: Arlan; and beloved cat: Peaches.

He worked most of his life as a cook, starting when he was a teenager. He will be remembered for his love of amusement parks, finding the next really good dining experience, and going on trips, especially to New York City, one of his favorite places to visit. He will most definitely be missed.

B. Rosene ‘Rose’ Reiff, 69, worked at Country Chef, enjoyed playing cards, going to craft shows

B. Rosene “Rose” Reiff, 69, of Ephrata, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

Born in Brecknock Township, she was the daughter of the late Walter Z. and Esther (Horst) Burkholder. She was the loving wife of Amos R. Reiff, with whom she celebrated 49 years of marriage.

A member of Ridgeview Mennonite Church, Rose was a graduate of Conestoga Valley High School, class of 1968. She was employed by Cinderella Knitting Mills and then by Country Chef. In her later years she was a homemaker. She loved to read, shop, play cards, listen to gospel and country music and enjoyed going to craft shows. She loved to spend vacation with her family at the beach and the mountains.

Rose was a grateful recipient of one of the early liver transplants at UPMC in 1994, providing her with a second lease on life. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends.

In addition to her husband: Amos; Rose is survived by a daughter: Robyn Reiff of Ephrata; and three sisters: Ann Eberly of Akron; Judy, married to Clyde Brandt of Elm; and Ruth, married to Ronald Martin of New Holland.

She was preceded in death by a sister: Jean Martin.

Services were held March 5 at Ridgeview Mennonite Church, Gordonville, with Pastor Mick Sommers officiating. Interment was in the adjoining church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Rose’s memory may be made to Ridgeview Mennonite Church, 3723 Ridge Road, Gordonville, PA 17529.

Joseph C. Bauder, 56, tech teacher and football coach at EHS, furniture maker, father of two

Joseph C. Bauder, 56, of Akron, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2019, at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy, after a difficult battle with cancer.

He was born in Lancaster to Fredrick C. and Vivian E. (Metzler) Bauder, of Akron, and was the husband of Barbara L. (Good) Bauder, with whom he would have celebrated 33 years of marriage in March.

Joe was a furniture maker for Greg Pilotti Furniture Makers, and a former technology education teacher for Ephrata High School, School District of Lancaster, and Pequea Valley High School. He was also a football coach for Ephrata, Garden Spot, and Pequea Valley High Schools.

In addition to his wife and parents, Joe is survived by two daughters: Devon K. Reed and her husband Robert J. Reed of Philadelphia; and Taylor A. Ziegler and her husband David E. Ziegler of Myerstown; two grandchildren: Nora J. and Cael E. Ziegler; and a brother: Jay F. Bauder of Ephrata.

Details for the memorial service will be available online at stradlingfuneralhome.com. The family will greet friends following the service. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.  Please omit flowers.
