George E. ‘Jim’ Susa Sr., 84, Denver, co-owned Cocalico Biologicals, avid traveler and reader

George E. “Jim” Susa Sr., 84, Denver, died at home May 9, 2016.

Born in Thompson No. 1, a son of the late George A. and Christina (Burless) Susa, he was married to Sharon M. (Campbell) Susa for 41 years.

Jim was a 1949 Red Stone Township High School graduate and a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. He was past co-owner and president of Cocalico Biologicals Inc., Stevens. A supporter of local charities, he was also an avid traveler, enjoyed reading, reminiscing, and a good joke.

Also surviving is his son: G. Edward (Anne Pinkerton) Susa Jr., Monrovia, Md.; sisters: Jean Gmutza, Filbert; and Mary Ann Arnold, Masontown; and brother: Daniel (Shirley) Kish, Brook Park, Ohio.

Services were held May 13 at OMPH Catholic Church, Ephrata, with Father John McLoughlin, CSSR, as celebrant. Private entombment was in Lafayette Memorial Park Mausoleum, Briar Hill.

Charles S. “Rick” Rickenbach, 78, of The Villages, Fla., formerly of Ephrata, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016, at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

He was born in Ephrata to the late Charles H. and Thelma Mae (Sharp) Rickenbach and was the husband of Lois J. (Martin) Rickenbach.

Rick was a member of the Chapel of Christian Faith, The Villages, Fla. He retired in 1996 after 33 years as a millwright at Armstrong World Industries. Rick faithfully served at the Wildwood Soup Kitchen in Wildwood, Fla. He enjoyed Philadelphia sports, was an avid golfer, and especially loved the Lord, and his family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Denise R. Zimmerman, fiancé of Bob Leonowich, of Fleetwood; Deb, wife of Jim Kepiro, of Strasburg; two step-daughters: Kim, wife of Jerry Keefer, of Clay; Heidi, wife of Jason Gelnett, of Harrisburg; four grandsons; three step-grandsons; and two step-granddaughters; a brother: Leslie, husband of Joyce Rickenbach, of Leola; and a sister: Henrietta, wife of Lloyd Mull, of Ephrata.

He was preceded in death by his first wife: Barbara A. (Bair) Rickenbach; and a daughter: Dori-Lynn Rickenbach.

Services were held May 17 at Ephrata Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Galen Hackman officiating. Interment will be private in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Jack Wolfgang Wampler, 14, of Ephrata, passed away unexpectedly in Lebanon County on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.

He was born March 10, 2002, in Spartanburg, S.C., to Joel L. Wampler of Schaefferstown and Lisa K. Brubaker-Wheat, wife of Michael D. Wheat of Ephrata.

Jack was an eighth grade student at the Ephrata Middle School. He enjoyed telling jokes, making YouTube videos, computers, was a master of Rubik’s cube and enjoyed watching cartoons.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a sister: Hayley Nicole Kauffman of Schaefferstown; maternal grandmother: Nancy D. Brubaker, companion of Jack Stewart of Ephrata; maternal grandfather: Clarence M. Brubaker of Ephrata; paternal grandmother: Renee, wife of George Throne of Bethel; aunts and uncles: Jeff and Kim Aungst of Bethel; Justin and Dawn Beck of Bethel; Riley and Lance Wampler of Los Angeles, Calif.; Jeff and Jill Cochran of Lancaster; Mark and Jericho Brubaker of Akron; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather:, Leonard Wampler.

A memorial service was held May 16 at Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, Ephrata, with Pastor Rocky Hambrick officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

James Edward Parke, Denver, McCaskey grad, mechanic, enjoyed spending time with family

James Edward Parke, of Denver, passed away suddenly on Feb. 12, 2016, at his home.

He was the husband of Patricia Magee Parke.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter: Andrea; and a half-brother: Jeffrey Hornberger.

He was a graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School. James was a mechanic and loved working on cars, was a loving husband, and enjoyed spending time with his wife and mother-in-law.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Donations may be sent to the family.

E. Beatrice Sweigart, 97, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Friday, May 20, 2016, at Fairmount Homes.

She was born in New Holland to the late Parke and Anna (Parmer) Parmer, and was the wife of the late Elmer “Bupp” Sweigart.

Beatrice worked as a floor girl for Hesteco Garment Factory.

Beatrice is survived by a daughter: Phyllis J., wife of Carl “Pete” Ditzler, of Ephrata; two granddaughters: Allison, wife of Rick Simmons, of Ephrata; and Janna Ditzler of Pittsburgh; and one great-granddaughter: Becca.

In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by two brothers: Donald and Charles Parmer.

Services were held May 24 at Stradling Funeral Home, Ephrata. She was interred at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Ephrata, with Pastor Rodger Hornberger officiating.

Casey L. Jones, 59, worked in the MCC warehouse, Arc volunteer, fan of Cake Boss, Elvis

Casey L. Jones, 59, of Lancaster, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at Lancaster General Hospital.

He was born in Lancaster to Mabel (Aukamp) Zechman of Lancaster, and the late Clifford D. Jones.

Casey was a member of Bible Fellowship Church, Ephrata. He attended Calvary Church where he was active in Sunday School and was the first student in the Shepherd’s Class. Casey worked at MCC in the warehouse for more than 20 years and then several years each at Lighthouse Vocational Services and Goodwill.

He volunteered with Arc of Lancaster, enjoyed traveling, shopping, going out to eat, collecting stuffed animals, and baseball caps. Casey was a huge fan of Cake Boss, whom he met in person; NASCAR; and music, especially Elvis Presley and shows at the American Music Theatre. He was an animal lover who was always happy, with a cheerful spirit, and a sense of humor. He always had a smile and loved to spend time with his family, especially his nephews and great-niece.

In addition to his mother, Casey is survived by two sisters: Jean Ziegler of Lancaster; Shirley, wife of Frank Kosakoski, of Lancaster; two nephews: Michael A., husband of Holly Ziegler, of Ephrata; Derek E. Parent of Tampa, Fla.; and a great-niece: Quinn Ziegler of Ephrata.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law: Allan James Ziegler.

Services were held May 21 at Stradling Funeral Home, Akron. Interment was private in Memory Gardens Memorial Cemetery.

Jack A. Stewart, 52, of Ephrata, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016, at Wellspan Ephrata Hospital.

He was the fiancé of Nancy D. Burkholder.

Jack was born on March 13, 1964, in Rochester, Pa. He was the son of Karin Stewart of Rochester, and the late Scudder Stewart.

In addition to his fiancée, he is survived by a daughter: Elizabeth A. Stewart of Rochester; a brother: Scudder, husband of Tracy Stewart, of Bethel Park; and three stepchildren: Jill, Lisa and Mark.

He was self-employed as an eBay seller and worked at Adams Flea Market.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Joy L Huhn, 53, of East Hempfield Township, passed away Sunday, May 15, 2016, at home from complications from ALS.

She was born in Philadelphia to R. Vern Adams and the late Judith L. Adams Herr; and was the wife of Norman F. Huhn, with whom she shared 29 years of marriage.

Joy was a member of the Akron Church of the Brethren. She was a graduate of Conestoga Valley High School and enjoyed playing the flute, reading, crocheting, and crafting.

In addition to her husband and father, she is survived by her children: Adrian F. Huhn of Lititz; Brendan M. Huhn and Brianna J. Huhn, at home; a granddaughter: Parker J Huhn; stepmother: Dolores Adams; two stepbrothers: Michael Klaips and James Klaips; a stepsister: Leighan, wife of Noah Melnick. She was especially close to her in-laws: Norman J., husband of Jeanie Huhn; Steve and Renee, Kris and Rebecca, Joel and Nancy, Tony and Jenn.

Services were held May 21 at Akron Church of the Brethren Interment was private in the Middle Creek Brethren Cemetery.

Ruth B. Eline, 85, of Akron, passed away Tuesday, May 17, 2016, at Luther Acres.

She was born in Clay Township to the late Cora (Eberly) Burkholder, raised by Lester and Erla Eberly and was the wife of the late Lawrence Eline who passed away in 2002.

Ruth was a member of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ephrata. She was a 1948 graduate of Ephrata High School. Ruth retired from Jack Miller Insurance, Ephrata. After retirement she worked part time at Doneckers and Stauffers of Kissel Hill. Ruth enjoyed crossword puzzles, traveling and listening to Frank Sinatra and Garrison Keillor.

She is survived by a son: Robert Usner of Wellsboro; two daughters: Sally, wife of Daniel Stahl, of Ephrata; Pamela, wife of Anthony Aeillo, of Ephrata; six grandchildren: Jason and Molly Usner; Ian Aeillo; Emily, wife of Tim Jensen; Adam and Katie Stahl; four great-grandchildren: Chase and Amelia Usner; Tallulah and Scarlet Aeillo; cousins: Lamar and Larry Eberly

Graveside services were held May 24 at Indiantown Mennonite Cemetery, Ephrata, with Rev. Jeffrey H. Goodman officiating.

Arlene H. Good, 79, of Denver, passed away Friday, May 20, 2016, at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was born in East Earl Township to the late Henry W. and late Mary Virginia (Hurst) Martin; and was the wife of the late Jacob N. Good, who passed away in 2010.

Arlene was an active member of Pine Grove Church, Bowmansville. From 1967 through 2016 she was employed at Stevens Feed Mill. From 1992 through 2013 she co-owned Stevens Feed Mill with her late husband, along with her son and daughter-in-law. She was a member of the Denver Women’s Club, enjoyed knitting, sewing, jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by a son: Willard J., husband of Florence (Martin) Good, of Denver; three grandchildren: Austin Matthew, husband of Krista (Lorah) Good, of Aberdeen, N.C.; Emily Nicole, wife of Ashley Bane, of Reading; Dillon Jacob Good of Denver; eight siblings: Carl L., husband of Lena Z. (Nolt) Martin, of Ephrata; Lorraine M., wife of Luke E. Weaver, of Myerstown; Lewis L., husband of Marilyn E. (King) Martin, of Mifflinburg; Mildred E., wife of Raymond Z. Nolt, of New Holland; Lucille M., wife of Wayne Rohrer, of Mercersburg; Paul H., husband of Marian (Martin) Martin, of Ephrata; Earl R., husband of Joyce E. (Groff) Martin, of Mohnton; and Ellen E., wife of Melvin S. Burkholder, of Cambridge Springs.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a brother: Wilmer Roy Martin.

A viewing will be held Wednesday, May 25, from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m., at the Pine Grove Church, 1194 Reading Road, Bowmansville, followed by her funeral service at 3 p.m., with Pastors Jonathan Yoder and Delvin Martin officiating. Interment will take place in the adjoining church cemetery.

Marion L. Hackman, 88, Denver, worked at Ephrata K-Mart, enjoyed reading, family time

Marion L. Hackman, 88, of Denver, passed away Wednesday, May 18, 2016, at Denver Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Scranton to the late Roy and Sarah Dingee, and was the wife of Marvin L. Hackman Sr., with whom she celebrated 63 years of marriage this past April 26.

Marion enjoyed reading, word searches, crocheting, embroidering, going to the mountains, and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She was a homemaker, and also worked as a shelf stocker for Kmart of Ephrata for almost 20 years.

In addition to her husband, Marion is survived by five sons: Marvin Hackman Jr. of Ephrata; Roy Paul, husband of Jackie (Hainley) Hackman, of Ephrata; Eugene Lamar, husband of Patricia (Swisher) Hackman, of Ephrata; Brett Hackman of Denver and girlfriend, Roxanne Eichler; and Thomas, husband of Heather (Wanner) Hackman, of Sinking Spring; a daughter: Ramona Sally, wife of Rick Lorah, of Reamstown; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and two on the way; two brothers: Leroy L. “Johnny” Dingee of Fleetville; and Emmett E., husband of Midge Dingee, of Clarks Summit.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert G. Dingee.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver. An additional viewing will be held on Thursday, May 26, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the funeral home, where funeral services will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Shawn Crills officiating. Interment will take place in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in East Hanover Township.

Stephanie Marie Gerola, 20, of Ephrata, passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016, in Stevens as a result of injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.

She was born in Phillipsburg, N.J., to Joseph Gerola of Ephrata; and Holly Ann (Owens) Gerola of Phillipsburg, N.J.

Stephanie was a graduate of Ephrata High School. Her hobbies included drawing, photography, and playing softball. In her earlier years, she played the viola.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two brothers: Joseph John Gerola of Ephrata, Nicholas Anthony Gerola of Phillipsburg, N.J.; a sister: Rachel Gerola, wife of Tyrone Cooper, of Ephrata; maternal grandmother: Elaine Leoszewski of Easton; maternal grandfather: James Owens of Melbourne, Fla.; paternal grandmother: Lucille Gerolla of Hackettstown, N.J.

A gathering to celebrate Stephanie’s life was held May 21 at Akron Mennonite Church, with Pastor Jim Amstutz officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Donna M. Eckenroth, 64, Ephrata, died May 22, 2016, her birthday, at home under hospice care.

Born in Ephrata, a daughter of the late Richard T. and Mildred A. (Swartz) Eckenroth, she was employed as a cook at Cloister Restaurant, and formerly at Dutchman’s Diner, The Wooden Spoon, and Milestone. Donna was a member of the Reinholds VFW, enjoyed reading, trips to the beach, sudoku puzzles, and coffee sessions with friends.

Surviving are sisters: Betty J. Eberly, Denver; and Kathy A. (David) Eager, Holly Hill, Fla.; and a brother: Richard C. Eckenroth, Mount Union.

A brother, Kenneth E. Eckenroth, predeceased her.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, May 27, at 1 p.m., from Good Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, Reamstown, with burial to follow in Muddy Creek Cemetery, Swartzville. The visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be no public viewing at Donna’s request. Kindly omit flowers.

Paul R. Royer, 72, Ephrata, Vietnam vet, natural gas pipeline worker, had a big heart

Paul R. Royer, 72, of Ephrata, passed away Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in Philadelphia to the late Paul A. and Marie A. (Hennessey) Royer, and was the husband of Vickey A. Royer, with whom he shared 31 years of marriage.

Paul worked as a senior right-of-way agent in the natural gas pipeline industry the majority of his working career. He served his country in the US Navy during the Vietnam War. Paul enjoyed music, movies and working outdoors on his lawn and gardens. Additionally, he enjoyed fishing, watching NASCAR races, football games, hockey games and forever was a huge Penn State fan. Paul was a generous man with a very big heart who enjoyed meeting people, was always loved by his family and will be deeply missed.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: Christian B. Royer and Connor R. Royer, of Ephrata; two daughters: Renee M., wife of Jared Penland, of Texas; Candace S., wife of Chad Crawford, of Arkansas; five grandchildren: Declan Royer, Quinn and Emery Penland, Abigail and Carlie Crawford; two step-children: Julie L., wife of Kevin Barnett, of Missouri; Brian J., husband of Jordan Wortsmith, of Arizona; five step-grandchildren: Jillian, Ellie and Kallie Barnett, Duncan and Evan Wortsmith; a brother: David F., husband of Lisa Royer, of Texas; two sisters: Ann Fleckenstein of Texas; and Margy R., wife of Alan Boal, of Pennsylvania.

A visitation will be held Saturday, June 4, from 8 to 9 a.m., followed by a memorial service at the Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata. A graveside service will be held Saturday, June 4, at the Pine Hall Cemetery, State College.

Betty Louise Andrews, 92, registered nurse, ran antique shop in East Earl, very adventurous

Betty Louise Andrews (Howe), born in Downingtown, passed away May 23, 2016, from heart failure at the age of 92. Betty’s last residence was Warrenton, Va., where she resided with her daughter, Pat and son-in-law Don.

She was the daughter of Minnie Luella Howe (Hollinger) of Lititz/Churchtown, and William Norman Howe of Christiana. She was married to Bruce Thomas Andrews Jr. for more than 50 years.

Betty graduated from the school of nursing in Wilmington, Del., as a registered nurse after attending a year at Westchester State College. She worked as a private duty nurse then Muhlenberg Hospital in South Plainfield, N.J.; the VA Hospital in Basking Ridge; and then was owner of Conestoga Valley Antiques Shop in East Earl. She and her husband moved to New Holland, and upon his death, she built a home in Lebanon Township, N.J., with her daughter.

Betty enjoyed cooking, entertaining friends and family, reading, sewing, gardening, upholstery and caning chairs. She loved adventure, and went on a hot air balloon, glider, two-man helicopter, and on her 90th birthday, went hang-gliding. She was an avid traveler going all over Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Tasmania and the U.S.

She is survived by a son: Bruce T. Andrews III of Australia; and daughter: Patricia L. Loock (Andrews); four grandchildren: two in Australia: Bruce T. Andrews IV and Melanie (Andrews) Wratten; Monica (Loock) Wright of Maryland; and Donald D. Loock Jr. of Virginia; eight great-grandchildren:, Samantha Wright, Jessica Wright, David and Andrew Loock, Lachlain and Oliver Andrews and Matilda and Benjamin Wratten.

Betty was a fantastic mother, a devoted spouse and a wonderful grandparent. She embraced life with a positive attitude and an infectious laugh. Everyone’s lives that she touched will miss her but will be left with wonderful memories.

A celebration of life party will be scheduled for the end of the summer.

Albert W. Strausser Jr., 80, of Lititz, passed away May 27 at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital. During his working years, he drove truck for Pennfield and Weaver Industries. In retirement, he drove cars part time at Manheim Auto Auction. His passion was trains. His daughter, Susan, wife of Raymond G. Keffer, resides in Stevens.

Janet A. Shimp, 71, Cinderella Knitting Mill worker, enjoyed crosswords, animal lover

Janet A. Shimp, 71, of Denver, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was born in Clay Township, the daughter of Anna Steinmetz. She was the wife of Kenneth D. Shimp, with whom she shared 55 years of marriage this month.

Janet loved animals, especially dogs, and she enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She formerly worked as a machine operator for the Cinderella Knitting Mill for 30 years.

In addition to her husband, Janet is survived by two daughters: Shelby M. Shafer and companion Donald “Smoke” of Snyder County; and Sharon L. Shimp of Denver.

She was preceded in death by two brothers: Robert and Clyde.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

William M. ‘Bill’ Courtney, 94, WWII vet, salesman, Reformed Presbyterian charter member

William M. “Bill” Courtney, 94, of Ephrata, and formerly of Malvern, died Wednesday, May 25, 2016, at Hospice and Community Care in Mt. Joy.

He was the loving husband of Ruth E. (Hixson) Courtney, with whom he celebrated 71 years of marriage on Feb. 18. Bill was born Dec. 25, 1921, to Martha Alderton and William McKinley Courtney in Sleepy Creek, W.Va.

He graduated from Hancock High School in Hancock, Md., and was inducted into the U.S. Army 80th Division, 317th Infantry. Bill served during World War II. After being wounded and recuperating for nine months, he was honorably discharged in October 1945.

In 1947, Bill graduated with honors from Pace Institute in New York City with a degree in marketing, advertising, and sales. He attended Pace Institute under the GI Bill. Over the years he was a salesman for Orange Truck Sales and Service in East Orange, N.J.; R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in Winston Salem, N.C.; F&L Fittings in Camp Hill; and Process Components in New Brunswick, N.J.

He was a charter member, former choir member, and deacon emeritus of Reformed Presbyterian Church in Ephrata.

In addition to his wife, Ruth, he is survived by three children: Donna E., wife of Carl D. Gholson, of Scottsville, Ky.; Jeffrey A. Courtney of Willow Street; and Pamela S., wife of Andrew H. Brackbill, of Lititz; six grandchildren; one nephew; and several nieces.

Memorial services will be held at Reformed Presbyterian Church, 21 E. Locust St., Ephrata, on Saturday, June 25, at 11 a.m. Visitors will be received between 10 and 11 a.m.

Norman H. Weaver, 87, Old Order Mennonite Groffdale Conference deacon, sales barn retiree

Norman H. Weaver, 87, of Leola, passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at his residence.

He was born in Earl Township on Dec. 26, 1928. He was married to Katie S. Snyder on Nov. 22, 1949. He was the son of the late John O. and Leah M. (Horst) Weaver.

Norman a member of Old Order Mennonite Groffdale Conference. He was ordained deacon for Groffdale District on June 24, 1980. He was a retired farmer and also retired from New Holland Sales barn.

He was the father to six children: Clarence S. and Mary Ellen Weaver of Martinsburg; Edna S. and George Martin of Lewisburg; Ruth S. and Isaac Reiff of Mifflinburg; Ellen S. and Aaron Zimmerman of Leola; Irene S. and Harvey Oberholtzer of Leola; and a son-in-law: Elvin and Nora Oberholtzer of Shippensburg; 29 grandchildren; and 51 great-grandchildren; siblings: Ada and Aaron Burkholder of Fleetwood; John and Edna Weaver of Kutztown; Elmer and Elizabeth Weaver of Fleetwood; Eli and Mable Weaver of Leola; and Mary and Harold Zimmerman of Martinsburg.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter: Vera S. Oberholtzer in 1997; three granddaughters; and a great-granddaughter; three brothers: Henry, Paul, and Alvin Weaver; three sisters: Nora Martin, Anna Weaver, and Mabel Weaver.

Services were held May 28 at the home of Irene and Harvey Oberholtzer, further services at the Groffdale Frame Mennonite Church, with Bishop Ammon Weaver officiating. Interment was in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

Robert ‘Bob’ N. Landis, 62, of Ephrata, Conestoga Wood Specialties worker, enjoyed politics

Robert “Bob” N. Landis, 62, of Ephrata, passed away unexpectedly of a heart attack, on Monday, May 23, 2016.

He was born in Ephrata to Marian (Stauffer) Landis and the late Luke Landis and was the husband of Lucinda A. (Yoder) Landis for 38 years.

He was a member as well as deacon at Oasis Fellowship Church. Bob worked for Conestoga Wood Specialties for more than 35 years. He loved sports, beach vacations, playing volleyball, riding motorcycle, enjoyed politics, and was a Republican committee man. Bob especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandkids. He was also a regular blood donor.

In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his two sons: Shawn and Austin Landis; two daughters: Shalyn, wife of Duncan Forbes; Amber, wife of Jeremy Shirk; six grandchildren: Josiah, Javan, Jayda, and Jessica Forbes; Lucas and Adrielle Shirk; a brother: Richard, husband of Sharon Landis; two sisters: Janet, wife of Richard Frey; and Jean, wife of Irvin Boll.

Services were held May 28 at D.O.V.E Westgate Church, Ephrata, with Pastor Chris Leiby officiating. Interment took place in the Metzler Mennonite Cemetery.
