Franklin W. Knauer Jr., 87, formerly of Reinholds, Glen Gery Brick driver, avid gardener, hunter

Franklin W. Knauer Jr., 87, of the Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim, formerly of Reinholds, entered into Jesus’ arms peacefully Monday, Oct. 26, 2015.

He was the beloved husband of Pauline (Leininger) Knauer for the past 68 years. He was the son of the late Franklin G. and Edith (Walter) Knauer.

Frank was a member of Faith United Lutheran Church (formerly St John’s Lutheran) Denver. He retired from a 34-year career as a truck driver with Glen Gery Brick Corp. where he was able to log 2.5 million miles without a lost time accident. He is also in the Truckers Hall of Fame in Chicago for each million miles. After retiring, Frank spent many hours gardening; he loved having a huge garden and caring meticulously for it. An avid hunter, spending many seasons with family locally in Lancaster County as well as trips to Potter County. He greatly enjoyed the outdoors and camaraderie with family.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: Paul E., husband of Maxine (Blei), of Tucson, Ariz.; and Marvin L. of Phoenixville; and was dearly loved by his 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Frank is survived by two sisters: Ella, wife of Alvin Hollinger, of Stevens; and Katheryn, wife of Earl Hertzog, Manheim; two brothers: George, husband of Merla (Hehnly), of Denver; and William, widower of Pauline (Zoll), of Stevens.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Harry.

There will be a celebration of life ceremony at Pleasant View’s Hoffer Chapel, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, on Saturday, Nov. 21, at 10 a.m., with Pastor Joseph Veres officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Rose Mary Bryson, 72, Ephrata, mother of three, nurse, devout Catholic, animal lover

Rose Mary Bryson, 72, of Ephrata, passed away Thursday, Oct. 29, 2015, at Mease Countryside Hospital in Clearwater, Fla., following a brief illness.

Born in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late James C. and Rose (Turi) Miles.

Rose Mary was a 1961 graduate of Warwick High School and a 1963 graduate of The Lancaster School of Nursing. She worked at various hospitals, nursing homes and in private duty for more than 40 years.

She was a devote Catholic and a devoted and dedicated and caring mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Rose Mary loved Florida, and spent the last two years in the Clearwater area. Rose Mary also loved animals especially her Boston terrier, Zoey.

Rose Mary is survived by her three sons: John W. of Schuylkill County; James D. of Manheim; and Jeffrey A. of Ephrata; grandchildren: Erica, Felito, Orlando, Sergio, Nathan, Brady, Tia, Olivia, and Hunter; three great-grandchildren; a brother: Charles J. Miles of Denver; and a sister: Christine M. Miles-Sullivan of Morgantown; along with many nieces and nephews; and her beloved dog: Zoey.

She was preceded in death by her husband: John W. Bryson; and her grandson: Nicholas Bryson.

A burial mass was held on Nov. 16 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Ephrata. Interment followed at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Ephrata.

Lizzie W. Weaver, 85, mother of six, ran quilt business, Springville Mennonite member

Lizzie W. Weaver, 85, formerly of 290 Wabash Road, Ephrata, died Nov. 12, 2015, at Fairmount Homes Retirement Community (Wheat Ridge section) where she was admitted two days prior to her death.

She was the wife of Titus N. Weaver, with whom she would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Nov. 23. She was born Feb. 10, 1930 in East Earl Township, New Holland. She is the daughter of the late Isaac and Elizabeth Hurst.

She was a homemaker and also kept busy for 47 years with a quilt business in her home. She dearly loved her family and will be lovingly missed by them all. Lizzie was a faithful member of the Springville Mennonite Church of Weaverland Conference.

Surviving are four sons: Glenn, husband of Irene (Zimmerman) Weaver; Paul, husband of Ada Mae (Weaver) Weaver; Melvin, husband of Alma (Martin) Weaver; Kenneth, husband of Darlene (Hurst) Weaver, all of Ephrata; two daughters: Esther, wife of Harold Sensenig, of Shippensburg; and Janet, wife of Jason Groff, of Stevens; 29 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Phares W. Hurst of Ephrata; Amos W., husband of Martha (Sensenig) Hurst, of Lititz; and one sister: Lydia, wife of Paul Nolt, of Lititz.

She was preceded in death by a grandson; a great-granddaughter; three brothers: Reuben W. Hurst, Isaac W. Hurst, and Aaron W. Hurst; three sisters: Annie, wife of the late Michael Nolt; Frances W. Hurst and Edna, wife of the late Leon Martin.

Services were held Nov. 16 at Springville Mennonite Church, Ephrata, with Bishop Melvin Martin and Ministers Walter Martin, Wilmer Martin and Walter Zimmerman officiating. Interment followed in the adjoining church cemetery.

H. Wilbur Nauman, 75, independent trucker, operated Nauman Snowmobile Transport

H. Wilbur “St. Pete” Nauman, 75, of Ephrata, went home to be with his Lord Nov. 18, 2015 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Born in Manheim, he was the son of the late Frank and Ruth (Barr) Nauman. He was the loving husband of Gloria (Snader), aka “Wifey, with whom he shared more than 58 years of marriage.

Wilbur was a member of Ephrata Grace Church. He was an independent truck driver for 45 years doing all his own maintenance. He began his career as a lime hauler for Martin Stone then hauled potatoes for E.K. Bare & Sons. His family estimates he drove seven million miles during his lifetime, traveling all across the United States and Canada.

Wilbur had a love of snowmobiling. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Snowmobile Association (P.S.S.A), winning snowmobiler of the year in 1995. For many years he operated Nauman Snowmobile Transport to “support his habit,” as he would say. He spent his summers on Turkey Island, Camp Holly, on the Susquehanna River, boating, water skiing, gardening, and just tinkering around. His family and friends have many fond memories of their times on Nauman’s Island. After his retirement in 2002, Wilbur and Wifey spent their winters at The Hide-A-Way RV Resort in Ruskin, Fla. He spent his final 1½ years at Fairmount Homes in the care of a wonderful staff of which the family appreciates greatly.

He is survived by sons and a daughter: Timothy W. Nauman, Ephrata; James L. Nauman, husband of Cynthia; and Chad S. Nauman, husband of Heather, both of Lititz; and Bonita J. Mulvenna, Ephrata; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren, (with two more on the way); a brother: Charles Ray, husband of Betty, Manheim; a sister-in-law: Betty Nauman, East Petersburg.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Betty Zimmerman; two brothers: Stanley and Earl Nauman; and a great-grandson: Asher Finn Barth.

Services were held Nov. 23 at Ephrata Grace Church.

Nolan Michael Himes, 23, played lacrosse at Warwick H.S. and Slippery Rock U., loved music

Nolan Michael Himes, 23, of Lititz, passed away Monday, Nov. 23, 2015 after a courageous four-year battle with Ewings Sarcoma.

Born in Lancaster, he was a son of Mike E. Himes and Lisa Bonfield both of Lititz.

Nolan graduated in 2011 from Warwick High School where he was a member of the Lacrosse team. He loved playing lacrosse, hanging out with his friends, listening to music, traveling, going to the beach especially St. Martin, and Dewey Beach, playing basketball and enjoyed exercising. Nolan never knew a stranger and never let his fight with cancer get him down. He wanted to live life and spend as much time with his friends and family as he could. He attended Slippery Rock University to study physical therapy and was a member of the lacrosse team.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother: Brady N. Himes; maternal grandmother: Rachelle Rickens-Bonfield of Lititz; maternal aunt: Marianne Bonfield; paternal aunts: Pam Harding, Ephrata; Patti Martin; and Carol Keith; paternal uncle: Wayne Shenk, Ephrata; great aunt and uncle: Marianne and Reggie Bonfield; and numerous cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather: John Bonfield.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 28 at 11:30 a.m. from the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike Lititz. A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday evening and from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be held in Brunnerville United Methodist Cemetery.

Deaths of Local Interest – Nov. 25, 2015

Ruth S. Bowman, 91, died Nov. 17 at Landis Homes. Ruth was known for her gracious hospitality. She was a loving wife and mother, and attended Erisman Mennonite Church. She enjoyed quilting and reading, having read several books a week until recently. Her daughter, Linda, married to Robert Zimmerman, lives in Stevens. Daughter Helen, married to Mike Dabbs, resides in Denver.

Tracey L. Long, 49, of Willow Street, died Nov. 16 at Lancaster Regional Medical Center. Her brother, John D. Long, lives in Denver.

Joseph Paul Sagerer, 90, of Lancaster, passed away Nov. 20 at Conestoga View Nursing Home. During World War II Joseph served in the Navy on the Destroyer USS Halsey Powell, which was struck by a Japanese Kamikaze aircraft. He was awarded many military medals, including a Purple Heart. He had a long career as a skilled auto body technician. A daughter, Joan Spackman, wife of Ed Jr., lives in Reinholds.

Grace Elizabeth Habalar, 91, Shirlee Manufacturing retiree, gifted quilter, ‘Grammy Cookie’

Grace Elizabeth Habalar, (Grammy Cookie), 91, formerly of Terre Hill, passed away quietly Nov. 21, 2015 at Fairmount Homes, where she resided for the past year.

Born March 22, 1924 in Blue Ball, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Cora Rutter Ziemer. Her husband, the late Robert W. Habalar, passed away in 1965.

Grace worked at the former Shirlee manufacturing in Terre Hill for many years, retiring in 1984. An accomplished quilter, Grace and her sister, Mamie, produced quilts for all family members and sold others at local outlets. She also enjoyed making rugs, gardening, and feeding the birds in her back yard. Grace was a great cook and baker, fondly and lovingly known as “Grammy Cookie” for the thousands of cookies baked at Christmas.

Surviving are sons: Robert W. Jr. and wife Shirley; Barry L. and wife Jo; all of New Holland; three loving grandchildren: Carey Nicole and husband Peter Ruel, Lancaster; Jason Adam and wife Angela (Phillips), Portland, Ore.; and Michael Henry and wife Tushanna (Brennan) of South Williamsport. Grace cherished her great grandchildren: Port Adam, Lee Crotalus, Niko Glenn and Jackson Levi.

Also surviving are sisters: Clara (Mamie) Maxwell, Mount Joy; Mildred Boley, Narvon; brother: Norman Jr. and wife Janet, of East Earl; and sister-in-law: Grace Ziemer, Ephrata; five nieces and six nephews.

She was preceded in death by brother: Lester; niece: Patricia Elmer; and brothers-in-law: George Maxwell and Morris Boley.

A funeral service will be held at Eckenroth Home for Funerals, 209 E. Main St., Terre Hill, on Friday, Nov. 27, at noon, with visitation from 11 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be in Terre Hill Cemetery.

Lydia B. Martin, 71, of Ephrata, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015, at Fairmount Homes after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Earl Township to the late Aaron and Lena Z. (Burkholder) Martin.

She was a member of Martindale Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference). Lydia had been employed by Dutch Maid of Ephrata in the packing department for 23 years prior to retirement.

Lydia is survived by four brothers: Lawrence, husband of Mary (Nolt) Martin, of Ephrata; Aaron, husband of Esther (Weaver) Martin, of Mohnton; Harold, husband of Erma (Garman) Martin, of Greenwich, Ohio; Nelson, husband of Lucy (Hoover) Martin, of Ephrata; three sisters: Edna, wife of the late Marvin Fox, of Liberty, Ky.; Lena Mae, wife of Frank Hoover, of Ephrata; Susan, wife of Curvin Zimmerman, of Ephrata; and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held Nov. 23 at Martindale Old Order Mennonite Church, with Bishops Titus Martin and Eli Burkholder and Ministers Edward Burkholder, Emory Burkholder, and Leon Horst officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

Lidiya Rogozina, 77, mother of two, Bethany Slavic Church member, enjoyed gardening

Lidiya Rogozina, 77, of Narvon, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, at her residence.

She was born in Paranovka, Russia, to the late Prohor Dmitrievich and Elizabeth (Pavlovna) Mihaleev; and was the wife of Nikolay Rogozin, with whom she shared 56 years of marriage.

Lidiya was a member of the Bethany Slavic Church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and sewing.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children: Aleksandr, husband of Lubov Rogozin, of Narvon; Peter, husband of Ruth Rogozin, of Fivepointville; grandchildren: Tatyana Belko, Maksim, Dmitry, Artem, Ivan, Zachary, Reuben, Vladimir, Aleksander, Irena, Vadim, Alex, Angela, and Larissa Rogozin; sisters: Nadezda Mihieva and Galina Shmakova of Russia; a brother: Vasily Mahaleev of Russia.

Services were held at the Bethany Slavic Church, Ephrata.

Lydia H. Weaver, 90, formerly of New Holland area, mother of eight

On Nov. 21, Lydia H. Weaver, 90, formerly from the New Holland area, flew away with the angels to her home in heaven, where she met Jesus Christ her Lord and Savior.

She was reunited with her husband: Clarence (Tubby) Weaver; parents: Moses and Lydia Martin; son: Marvin Weaver; and grandson: Michael Martin.

She will be greatly missed by her eight children: Susan (Ira) Martin, Sarah (Roger) Kilhefner, Lucy (John) Zimmerman, Lester (Lois Martin) Weaver, Mary Ann (Dale) Martin, Clarence Weaver Jr., Charles (Karen Horning) Weaver, and Julia (Joe) Witmer; 29 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sister: Anna (late Weaver) Hurst; half-brothers: Ivan Z. (Romaine) Martin, and Elmer Z. (Ellen) Martin.

A celebration service will be held at a later date.

Sophie Witkowski, 93, Terre Hill, homemaker, mother of four, enjoyed family, gardening

Sophie Witkowski, 93, of Terre Hill, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 17, and is now comfortable in her home in Heaven.

Sophie was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to Mary (Mikzierricz) and Joseph Smialy, who had immigrated to the United States from Poland.

She spent her younger years in Cleveland and married John Witkowski on Sept. 23, 1944 while John was home on leave during World War II. They moved to a new home in Parma Heights in 1954 which was home until 2011, when Sophie moved next door to her daughter, Jan. Although Sophie worked part-time she was primarily a homemaker who enjoyed entertaining friends and relatives, raising her four children, and pampering grandchildren. Sophie liked working in her garden and with flowers, but her true joy was spending time with family and friends.

Sophie is survived by her children: John (wife Kathy) of Brighton, Mich.; Jerry of Corvallis, Ore.; and Jan Garrabrandt (husband Bruce) of Terre Hill; four grandchildren: Tammy Malley (husband Justin) of Truckee, Calif.; Holly Lloyd (husband JJ) of Northville, Mich.; Jeff of Lyons, Colo.; and Jesse of Marquette, Mich.; and seven great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband: John; and her son: James.

Sophie was known for her infectious smile, which brought joy to everyone around her and the image of which will stay with all who knew her.

A memorial Mass was held Nov. 23 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Ephrata.

Ernest E. Shaffer, 92, Akron, WWII vet, Shaffer Service Center owner, collected antique cars

Ernest E. Shaffer, 92, of Akron, passed away Monday, Nov. 16, 2015, at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

He was born in Augustaville to the late Curtis and Ellen (Racker) Shaffer and was the husband of the late Anna (Heiser) Shaffer and the late Lydia Mae Weaver Nolt Sensenig Shaffer.

Ernest was a member of the Ephrata United Zion Church. He owned and operated Shaffer Service Center for 60 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, stationed in the Philippines. Ernest enjoyed antique car collecting.

He is survived by three sons: Ernest Shaffer Jr. of California; Leslie, husband of Judy Shaffer, of Florida; Allen Shaffer of Akron; a daughter: Anna Hartranft of Ephrata; seven grandchildren: Jim, Jeff, Leslie, Ernest, Greg, and Michael Shaffer, Patti Frank; and 14 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wives and parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters.

Services were held Nov. 20 at Ephrata United Zion Church, with Pastor Jay H. Showalter officiating. Interment took place at Memory Gardens Memorial Cemetery.

Jerry A. Hake, 68, Brownstown, Vietnam vet, Green Berets captain, enjoyed movies, birds

Jerry A. Hake, 68, of Brownstown, died Nov. 20, 2015.

He was born Aug. 26, 1947 in Lancaster and was the son of the late Gerald C. and Rita (Rupp) Hake. He was married to his loving wife, Kathy G. Hake.

Together with their blended family he was the loving father of: Jolanda T., wife of David Hausner, of Parkton, Md.; Jodi L. Koenig of Gaithersburg, Md.; Jami Gibble, wife of Jody Gibble, of Manheim; and Robert Love Jr., partner of Rose Shutt, of Manheim. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, whom he loved dearly; and two sisters: Bonnie S., wife of David A. Saganich, of Conestoga; and Robbin L., wife of Stephen Natur, of Millersville.

After graduating from McCaskey High School in 1965, Jerry joined the U.S. Army. After completing Officer’s Candidate School, he served in the infantry serving two tours in Vietnam in Special Forces. While in Vietnam, he was promoted to captain in the Green Berets. He was especially good at coming up with crazy things to do with his grandchildren to make memories.

Some of his favorite past times were his work, reading, watching movies and just relaxing in the backyard watching birds. He was especially good at coming up with crazy things to do with the grandchildren to make memories.

Services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Marian A. Ensinger Scarborough, 86, of Moravian Manor, Lititz, and formerly of Ephrata, entered into rest Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015, at Moravian Manor.

Born in Ephrata, she was the daughter of the late Harvey L. Ensinger and the late Ida Remp Lilac Ensinger. She was the widow of Norman E. Scarborough.

Marian was associated with her father, brother, and uncle in the operation of Ensinger Printing Service in Adamstown for many years. She was last employed by The Shopping News of Ephrata as an advertising proofreader.

A 1947 graduate of Ephrata High School, she was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ, Ephrata, where she served on the flower committee and altar guild for many years. She enjoyed transporting members to church and elsewhere and also crocheting lap robes for the Red Cross, playing cards, and doing word search puzzles. She was also a member of the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley.

Survivors include a sister: Greta R., wife of Henry J. Roux, of Willow Street; two nieces: Cathy Witmer and Anne Bucher; two nephews: Joseph Roux and Eric Ensinger; one grandniece; five grandnephews; one great-grandniece; and one great-grandnephew.

She was preceded in death by a sister: Catherine Ensinger; and two brothers: Harvey L. Jr. and Clair R. Ensinger.

Services were held Nov. 30 at Steinman Hall at Moravian Manor, Lititz. Place of interment was Mellinger’s Cemetery, Schoeneck.

Charles R. Steffy, 88, Akron, worked for E.H. Keen and Son, enjoyed trips to the mountains

Charles R. Steffy, 88, of Maple Farm Nursing Center of Akron, passed away Friday, Nov. 27, 2015.

He was the husband of June (Fromm) Steffy, with whom he shared 66 years of marriage. Born in Lenover, Charles was the son of the late Dora (Powers) and Ralph K. Steffy.

A resident of Atglen most of his life, he was a former member of Atglen Methodist Church. He was employed by E.H. Keen and Son for 33 years and then as a custodian for the Coatesville School District for 10 years. He enjoyed going to the mountains with his nieces and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his daughter: Diane Rhinier, wife of Gerald, of Strasburg; two grandsons: Gregory Steffy of Ephrata, and Kevin Steffy of Lancaster; and two great-grandsons: Austin and Cody of Ephrata.

He was predeceased by his three siblings: Ralph E., Horace W., and Mary Trout.

The memorial service will be held Thursday, Dec. 3, at 11 a.m. at Wilde Funeral Home, 434 Main St., Parkesburg, with visitation from 10 until 11 a.m.

The family would like to thank the staff at Maple Farm for their loving care and support.

John Edwin Parrish, 86, Stevens, Black & Decker worker, enjoyed singing, was kind and always smiling

John Edwin Parrish, 86, of Stevens, passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, at Denver Health and Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Lancaster to the late William and Elizabeth (Pfautz) Parrish. He grew up there and was also a long time resident of Brownstown.

John worked in the painting room at Black & Decker, Lancaster, prior to his retirement. He enjoyed playing bingo. He and his mother made it a weekly outing. John could always be found with a smile on his face and a kind word. He was quite the character and was joyful all his life. He enjoyed singing and was comforted many times by hymns sung to him by Chaplain Tim.

John is survived by his brother: William Parrish of Denver; three nephews; one niece; two great-nieces; three great-nephews; and five great-great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by sister: Elizabeth V. Dochter.

There will be a gathering held on Friday, Dec. 4, at 9 a.m., at the Stradling Funeral Home, 30 N. Ninth St., Akron, with a prompt departure to the Riverview Burial Park, Lancaster, followed by his graveside service at 10:30 a.m., with Chaplain Tim George officiating.

Mary T. Osborne, 68, of Ephrata, formerly of Welch, W.Va., passed away Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015, at Lancaster General Hospital.

She was a daughter of the late Albert C. and Dora N. (Cox) Osborne.

Mary had been employed at Ford New Holland, Tyson, and the former Eby Shoe Co. She enjoyed walking her pet Chihuahua, Tinker Bell.

Mary is survived by a sister: Inez, wife of Joseph Dunn Sr., of Akron; four nieces; and three nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by two brothers: Robert C. and John F. Osborne.

Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 3, at Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, with Pastor Jim Kearsley officiating. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service.

Lila M. Enck, 92, of Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015, at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was born in Clay Township to the late Rufus and Vergie (Bingeman) Morgan; and was the wife of the late Carl K. Enck, who passed away in 1991.

She was a member of Hopeland United Methodist Church. Lila worked as a beautician in her earlier years and was a seamstress for Hopeland Manufacturing Co. prior to her retirement.

Lila is survived by son: Curtis L., husband of Kaye (Haller) Enck, of Ephrata; daughter: Wanda E., wife of Robert K. Deininger, of Ephrata; six grandchildren: Joshua, husband of Amanda Deininger; Jacob, husband of Stephanie Deininger; Wesley, husband of Lindsey Deininger; Heather, wife of Gregory Brand; Wendy Enck; Heidi, wife of Ian Frey; seven great-grandchildren: Chaska, Haven and Kellen Deininger, Brynn and Trent Frey, Brody and Aubree Brand.

In addition to her parents and husband, Lila was preceded in death by three step-brothers: Marlin, Lester and Harold Morgan; and a half sister: Alda Kohl.

Services were held Nov. 28 at Hopeland United Methodist Church, Lititz, with Revs. Jeffrey Snyder and Russ Eberly officiating. Private interment was in the Hopeland United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Joseph Z. Zaranka, 85, Manheim, WWII vet, Alumax retiree, member of Dutchland Polkateers

Joseph Z. Zaranka, 85, of Manheim, passed away peacefully Monday, Nov. 23, 2015 at Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community.

Joe was born in Girardville on March 27, 1930, a son of Gertrude (Perchasuta) Zaranka and Zan Zaranka; and was the husband of June (Hadesty) Zaranka with whom he celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Oct. 8.

He was a 1948 graduate of Girardville High School, and retired from Alumax in the mechanical and outside maintenance department. Joe was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church for 20 years and Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., for 20 years. Joe was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the American Legion Post No. 34, V.F.W. Post No. 1690, and the Dutchland Polkateers in Ephrata. He served in the U.S. Navy after World War II as a Fireman 1st class in the Destroyer Duty.

In addition to his loving wife: June; he is survived by four daughters: Christine J. Texter, wife of Joe; Sandra Zaranka, both of Lititz; Jo Lynn Friedel of Manchester; Nancy K. Sensenig, wife of Michael, of Ephrata; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother: Albert; and sister: Regina.

The family would like to thank the staffs of the York Visiting Angels, Dallastown Victorian Villa, Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community, and Hospice and Community Care for their exceptional care given to Joe during his illness.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a service celebrating Joe’s life at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home and Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private.

Rosaline M. Brendle, 86, Ephrata, Zausner’s retiree, pianist, enjoyed aquatics, OCMD trips

Rosaline M. Brendle, 86, of Ephrata, formerly of New Holland, died of natural causes Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, at Ephrata Manor.

Born in Akron, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Anna (Adams) Sweigart. Her husband, John Brendle Jr., died May 16, 2013.

Rosaline retired in 1992 after 22 years of service with the former Zausner’s, now Advanced Food Products, of New Holland. She was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church of New Holland, the Golden Years of Ephrata, and the New Holland Rec Center.

She was very friendly and outgoing and loved traveling to the mountains and to the beach with a favorite destination as Ocean City, Md. She also enjoyed traveling with “The Granny Van Bunch” and had many adventures and lots of laughter, bowling at the former Blue Ball Lanes leagues, playing piano and organ, and music. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother.

In her later years she loved going to the New Holland Rec Center for her Aquacize classes where she made many friendships. She loved and was loved by the staff and residences of Ephrata Manor Nursing Home.

Surviving are two sons: Terry L., married to Patricia Brendle, of Ephrata; and Donald R., married to Karen Brendle, of New Holland; five grandchildren: Jeremy, Lindsay, Corey, Terry Lee, and Cyndi; and two great-grandsons: Grant and Austin.

Preceding her in death is a brother: Clifford Sweigart.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 4, at 2 p.m., at Groff-High Funeral Home, 145 W. Main St., New Holland, with the Rev. Robert Stippich officiating. Interment will be in the Zeltenreich Cemetery. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service.
