Jackie Serviss, 47, Ephrata, Avon rep, knitter, OMPH, Ephrata Manor volunteer

Jackie Serviss, 47, of Lancashire Hall, Lancaster, passed away Saturday, March 21, 2015, from complications of a brain tumor.

Prior to admission to Lancashire Hall Jackie resided in Ephrata, with her sister, Elizabeth, brother-in-law, Mike, and nieces Alicia and Isabelle Groff.

Jackie was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church and a 1988 graduate of Ephrata Area High School. Jackie also attended Acadia Inc. for neuro rehabilitation for the past five years.

The family is grateful to the staff of therapists at Acadia who worked with Jackie to enrich her life.

Jackie was a former Avon representative and she also used her knitting skills to make and donate baby blankets to the Ephrata hospital.

For more than 20 years, Jackie volunteered her time with Our Mother of Perpetual Help kindergarten classes sharing her knowledge and love of sign language. Jackie also volunteered her time once a week at Ephrata Manor helping residents with bingo.

Jackie was predeceased by her mother, Alice (nee Muldowney); and her father, Bill.

Besides her sister, brother-in-law and nieces, Jackie is survived by several aunts and uncles: Loretta Muldowney, Jack and Pat Muldowney, Bill Muldowney, Ann Marie and Dave DeBolt, Jane Muldowney, and Kathy and Jeff Simmons.

Jackie was a bright spot in the lives of others and enriched all with her positive attitude despite the many challenges she faced throughout her life. She was greatly loved and will be missed by many cousins and friends.

Viewings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25, and from 10 to 10:45 a.m. on Thursday, March 26, at Gravenor Home For Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 26 at OMPH Church, 320 Church Ave. Ephrata. Final Commendation and Farewell will follow at Memory Gardens, East Cocalico Township.

Jane S. Colvin, 80, Ephrata, worked in Ephrata Review circulation, enjoyed knitting

Jane S. Colvin, 80, of Ephrata, went to be with her Heavenly Father Friday, March 20, 2015, at home.

Born May 13, 1934 in Washington Boro, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin E., and Verna H. (Sangrey) Sauder. Jane was the wife of Donald W. Colvin of Ephrata, to whom she was married for 56 years.

A homemaker, she graduated from Penn Manor High School in 1952. Jane worked in the bookkeeping department at Lancaster County National Bank. She retired from Ephrata Review circulation department in 2001. Jane enjoyed knitting, word puzzles, and spending time with her loving family and friends.

She is survived by her loving husband; one son: Steven D., husband of Jeanne (Williams) Colvin of Magnolia, Texas; one daughter: Denise C., wife of Lowell R. Anderson of Millersville; five grandchildren: Sarah, wife of Christian Black of Houston, Texas; Daniel Colvin of Houston, Texas; John Colvin of Dallas; Keith Anderson of Millersville; and Eric, husband of Brittney (Thomas) Anderson of Conestoga; and three great-grandchildren: Madison, Micah and Morgan Anderson.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Jane’s life celebration service at Liberty Baptist Church, 47 Cindia Lane, Ephrata, on Thursday, March 26, at 2 p.m. Officiating will be Pastor Jim Taylor. Family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow after service at Millersville Mennonite Cemetery.

Robert P. Longenecker, 92, WWII vet, was Longenecker’s Clothing Store owner, top athlete

Robert P. Longenecker, 92, formerly of Reading and Denver, peacefully went to be with his Lord and Savior, Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Ephrata Manor, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Philadelphia, son of the late Benjamin S. and Gladys (Himmelberger) Longenecker. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruby L. (Angstadt) Longenecker, with whom he shared 39 years of marriage and his second wife, Mary (Schoch) Longenecker, with whom he shared 23 years of marriage.

Bob attended Muhlenberg Township High School and gradated from Wilson High School, where he excelled in soccer, swimming, diving, and high jump. He also played tuba in the county band. He attended Bob Jones College (BJU) in Cleveland, Tenn. Proudly serving in World War II with the Army 3928 Quartermaster, he was in Paris on V-E Day. Bob was the proprietor of Longenecker’s Clothing Store, which was started by his father in 1927.

He was a member of Community Evangelical Church and had served as a Sunday School teacher, choir and male chorus member. Throughout his life, he enjoyed golf, tennis, and especially spending time with his family at the beach.

Bob is survived by two children: Deborah S. Hoover, and her husband Carl E. Hoover of Akron; and Timothy P. Longenecker of Kutzown; three grandchildren: Matthew Hoover (wife Hilary) of Harrisburg; Timothy Hoover of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and Meghan (Hoover) Heim and her husband Kurt Heim of Bozeman, Mont.; a great-granddaughter: Madelyn Hoover; and stepsons: Cory and Brad Heller, and their families. Also surviving are a brother: Dr. Joseph Longenecker of Florida; and a sister: Martha (Longenecker) Hertzler of South Carolina.

He is also predeceased by brothers: Richard Longenecker, James Longenecker, Donald Longenecker; a sister: Gladys (Patricia) Longenecker; and a great-grandson: Samuel James Hoover.

A memorial service was held March 20 at Community Evangelical Church, Sinking Spring.

Gary L. Balmer, 57, of Stevens, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2015.

He was born in Ephrata to Glenn E. Balmer, of Stevens, and the late Leah M. (Musser) Balmer.

Gary was a member of the Independent Christian Church. He loved the outdoors, camping, hiking, hunting, and going to Tioga County. Gary worked as a welder for many years.

In addition to his father, he is survived by two sisters: Linda K., wife of Quin Jones of Sinking Spring; and Debra J., wife of Donald Meckley of Ephrata; and a brother: Russell L., husband of Kathy Balmer of Lititz. He also enjoyed spending time with his niece: Nicolle, and husband Dustin; great-niece: Braelin; and nephew: Ryan.

Services were held March 24 at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Charles Shifflett officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Jay Bucher, 64, star athlete at EHS, LG Health leader

Jay R. Bucher, 64, a Lancaster General Health executive and community leader, died following a long battle with multiple myeloma cancer at his home surrounded by family March 18, 2015.

A resident of Manheim Township, he was the son of the late Paul C. and Anna Mary Bucher. He was married to Pamela A. (Kraus) Bucher for 42 years.

Jay received his undergraduate degree from Gettysburg College, and his banking degree from Bucknell University School of Banking. He was a 1968 graduate of Ephrata High School.

Well known for his sports career, Jay was an all-state performer in football and basketball at Ephrata High School. He was the leading basketball scorer in Lancaster County in 1968 leading the Ephrata to the County Championship and to the District finals. Jay played on a Division 1 scholarship at Gettysburg College scoring 1,118 points. He played basketball professionally with the Lancaster Red Roses and semi-professionally with the Lancaster Big 5.

He joined the National Central Bank in 1972 (Now Wells Fargo), becoming a senior vice president in 1995. In 1995, he joined Lancaster General Hospital as vice president of development. In 2006, he was promoted to President of Lancaster General Health Foundation.

Over the last two decades, Jay played an integral role in strengthening Lancaster General Health, as well as our community’s overall well-being. Since joining LG Health in 1995, Jay most notably led the $25.2 million capital campaign for the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, the largest private fundraising effort in our community’s history. He also headed capital campaigns for Women & Babies Hospital and the Lancaster General Hospital Orthopedic Center.

Jay was a trusted advisor to many boards and nonprofit organizations. He currently was serving on the Boards of Directors of United Way of Lancaster County, Boys and Girls Club of Lancaster, and the Lancaster County Career & Technology Foundation. Past Boards included: Junior Achievement of Lancaster County, Manheim Township Foundation, Keystone Arts & Culture Center, Gettysburg College Board of Fellows, Maple Farm Nursing Center, and others.

He received numerous recognition awards over the years including Gettysburg College Young Alumni Achievement award, Lancaster Jaycees Boss of the Year, Junior Achievement National Bronze Leadership Award and Excel Award, United Way Volunteer of the Year Award, Ephrata High School Athletic Hall of Fame and Gettysburg College Hall of Fame, AFP Fundraising Professional of the Year Award in November 2011, and most recently The Distinguished Citizen Award from the PA Dutch Council, Boy Scouts of America. He served in numerous fundraising roles including chair of the Lancaster County United Way Campaign in 1993. Professional organization membership included the Hamilton Club and Bent Creek Country Club.

In addition to his wife, Jay is survived by his daughter: Alison M. Baccio of Lancaster; a son: Joshua J. Bucher, husband of Erin M., of Carlisle; four grandchildren: Isabella and Case Baccio, Zoe Bucher, and Alexia Gonzalez; a sister: Lorraine D. Henly and her spouse, Gary Henly, of Reinholds; and brothers: James D. Bucher and his spouse, Laura Bucher, of Virginia Beach, Va.; and John D. Bucher and his spouse, Sharon, of Harrisonburg, Va.

A celebration of Jay’s life was held March 22 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Lancaster, with Pastors Craig Ross and David Klepper officiating. A private family interment took place in the Hammer Creek Mennonite Cemetery, Lititz.

Boy Scouts will honor Bucher posthumously

The Pennsylvania Dutch Council of the Boy Scouts of America will award its highest citizen honor, Distinguished Citizen, to the family of Jay R. Bucher on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at the Lancaster Marriott.

Bucher, who passed away on March 18, was the President of the Lancaster General Health Foundation and the chief fundraising officer. Jay spent 19 years raising money for the Lancaster based Health system and helped shape the expanded care that Lancaster General continues to provide our community.

Community involvement was a significant part of Jay’s life serving on many community boards, professional associations, and more. Some of Jay’s involvement included: United Way of Lancaster County, the Lancaster County Career & Technology Foundation, the Boys Club & Girls Club of Lancaster, Junior Achievement of Central Pennsylvania, Manheim Township High School Foundation, and the Boy Scouts of America.

Bucher had been suffering from multiple myeloma cancer for some time when he was chosen as the award recipient. Duane S. Crouse, development director of the Pennsylvania Dutch Council, Boy Scouts of America, confirmed that a private presentation of the award was made to Jay at his home prior to his death. Mr. Bucher recorded some comments at that time via video. The video will be shown on April 29 at the posthumous presentation.

Retired State Senator Michael Brubaker, now the Chief Executive Officer of Blackford Ventures, LLC, will provide the keynote address.

The Boy Scout Council each year presents the Distinguished Citizen Award to an exceptional civic leader whose contributions have advanced the quality of life in the community and who exemplifies the values of the Boy Scout organization.

Members of the community and supporters of Scouting are invited to sponsor or attend the award dinner; a fundraising event for Boy Scout programs in Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

David M. Coleman, 78, Denver, Vietnam USAF vet, Bible study leader, enjoyed fishing, travel

David M. Coleman, 78, Denver, died March 27, 2015, in Ephrata Community Hospital.

Born in Lawn, he was a son of the late Alfred J. Coleman and Sarah M. Hugendubler Coleman Klopp.

A staff sergeant in the Air Force during the Vietnam War, he retired after 20 years of service. David was a member of Harvest Fellowship Church, Stevens, and led a Bible study at Colonial Lodge. He loved fishing, traveling and time with his grandchildren.

Surviving is a daughter: Mae I. (Matthew) Lund, Elverson; son: Mark Lee (Cheri Strausburg) Coleman, Red Lion; grandchildren: Derek and Ileia Lund, and Nathan and Rhiannon Coleman; great-grandson: Dillian Lund; and sister: Sarah M. Kelly, Holtwood.

Siblings: Helen Dissinger Yundt, Elizabeth Ward, Martin, Joseph, and A. John Coleman predeceased him.

Funeral services will be held Friday, April 3, at 11:30 a.m. from Good Funeral Home, Reamstown, with The Rev. Eugene N. Weaver officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. A viewing will be held an hour prior to the service.

Mildred H. Zimmerman, Clay native, mother of four

Mildred (Mick) H. Zimmerman entered into eternal rest March 25, 2015.

She was born on Nov. 7, 1926 in Clay, to the late Ruth (Johns) and John Hummer. She was the wife of the late John M. Metzler and the late Harold L. Zimmerman who preceded her in death in 2009.

She is survived by her children: Patricia (Mark) Bleecker, Lancaster; Bruce (Brenda) Metzler, Ephrata; Denise (David) Currin, Livonia, Mich.; and Matthew Zimmerman, Mount Joy. She treasured her grandchildren: Heather (Kevin) Good, Mountville; Bret (Renee) Smith, Manheim; Eric (Kristin) Reese, Chicago, Ill.; Brandon (Anita) Reese, Parma, Ohio; Matthew (Jennie) Currin, Jeffersontown, Ky.; David Bleecker, Lancaster; Michelle (James) McEleney, St. Croix, Virgin Islands; Bradleigh Bleecker, Lancaster: and nine great-grandchildren: Ethan and Jared Smith, Caleb and Nathan Good, Vincent and Joseph Reese, Addison Reese and Bennett and Lyra Currin. She is survived by one brother: Leon (Lois) Hummer, Lititz; and one sister: Dorothy Allen, Tucson, Ariz.

One brother, Clayton Hummer, preceded her in death in 1936.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 2, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., at the Brethren Village Chapel, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, followed by a memorial service at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be private in the Cedar Hill Cemetery, Ephrata.

Hannah Gehr, 92, Bowmansville, C&B Trimming worker, loved hot dogs, crocheting

Hannah Gehr, 92, Bowmansville, died March 23, 2015, at Fairmount Homes, Ephrata.

Born in East Cocalico Township, a daughter of the late Stephen K. and Minne (Garner) Hainley, her husband, Luther C. Gehr, died Aug. 17, 1990.

A member and former Sunday School teacher of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, Denver, she retired after 30 years from the former C&B Trimming, Reamstown. Hannah loved hot dogs and crocheting.

Surviving is her daughter: Glenda J. Gehr, Bowmansville.

Graveside services were held March 26 at Swamp Cemetery, Reinholds.

Melvin G. Lehman, 80, Ephrata, MCC volunteer, furniture salesman, active in church

Melvin G. Lehman, 80, of Ephrata, passed into the arms of his maker Tuesday, March 24, 2015, at Ephrata Manor, after a courageous battle with PSP, progressive supranuclear palsy.

He was born in Myerstown, Feb. 3, 1935 to the late Philip and Edna (Good) Lehman and was the husband of Gwendoline (Bixler) Lehman with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.

Melvin served his country by volunteering through the MCC, as a medical research test subject at the National Institute of Health. He was a furniture salesman until his retirement. Melvin was a member of the Ephrata Church of the Brethren, loved the Lord, was a lifetime Sunday School teacher, sang in numerous male choruses, enjoyed reading, lawn work, and gardening. He was a lifetime member of the Lucky 13 Hunting Camp, an avid Phillies and Eagles fan, and a loving humorous Pop Pop.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: Jesse, husband of Lois Lehman of Ephrata; and Timothy Lehman of Ephrata; a daughter: Regina Usner of Ephrata; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a sister: Betty Logan of Ephrata.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: David and Paul Lehman.

Services were held March 30, at the Donecker Chapel at Ephrata Manor, with Pastor Robert Good officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Lorraine Zwally, 89, of Lancaster, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2015, at Lancaster General Hospital.

She was born in Ephrata to the late Reuben E. and Anna (Raihl) Fasnacht and was the wife of the late Robert E. Zwally.

Lorraine was a member of the Ephrata Church of the Brethren, the VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and the Eastern Star Cloister Chapter #406. Along with her husband, Lorraine was the owner/operator of Zwally’s Music Store.

She is survived by two sons: Robin G. Zwally, husband of Valerie George of Lititz; Randall S., husband of Wendy Zwally of Dillsburg; and a grandson: Josiah Zwally.

A graveside service was held March 28 at Middle Creek Brethren Cemetery, Ephrata Township, with Chaplain Mark Tedford officiating.

Chester C. Shupp, 82, Korean War vet, bricklayer at Shupp Masonry, Phillies fan

Chester C. Shupp, 82, Robesonia, died at home March 23, 2015.

Born in Brecknock Township, Lancaster County, he was a son of the late Walter and Ada (Trostle) Shupp, and was married to Mary Alice (Eitnier) Shupp for 57 years.

Chester was a brick and block layer, last working with his son, Rodney, of Shupp Masonry. He was a Korean War U.S. Army corporal and cherished time with his family. Rooting for the Phillies, NASCAR, hunting, and woodworking were all part of his life.

Surviving in addition to his wife are children: Susan (Jesse) Brendle, Mohnton; Sandra (Michael) Eberly, Robesonia; Randy and Rodney (Dawn Hornberger) Shupp, both of Reinholds; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters: Emma (Carl) Good, and Dorothy (Guy) Fultz; and a brother: Robert (Aggie Heck) Shupp.

Siblings: Helen Boyer, Arlene Noll; Elmer, Richard, and Walter Shupp predeceased him.

Funeral services were held March 31 from Good Funeral Home, Reamstown, with the Rev. Jeffrey L. Martin officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant View Cemetery, Sinking Spring.

Theresa M. (Lefever) Sweigart, 70, of Denver, went to be with the Lord on Friday, March 27, 2015, at Conestoga View.

Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Robert and Kathryn (Pickel) Lefever. She was the wife of Walter A. “Wally” Sweigart for 10 years.

Terry graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School and attended the Consolidated School of Business. She worked in the restaurant industry for many years. Terry enjoyed teaching Sunday School. She was a member of Bethany Grace Fellowship Church.

In addition to Wally, Terry is survived by two sons: Troy A. Lefever Sr. of Lancaster and Patrick E. Lefever of New Providence; three stepsons: Walter A. Jr.; Joshua S., married to Michelle, all of Denver; and Craig A., of Fennville, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers: C. Robert Lefever of Morris; and Gary L. Lefever of Lititz; three sisters: Kathy S. Meily of Lancaster, Dorothy J. Ely of Gap, and Mary Alice Lefever of New Providence.

She was preceded in death by her father; and two brothers: Larry G. and John D.

Services were held March 31 at Bachman Funeral Home, Strasburg, with Pastor Chris Smeltz officiating. Interment followed in Georgetown United Methodist Cemetery.

Charles A Pfautz Sr., 76, of Caneyville, Ky., passed away Saturday, March 28, 2015, at Twin Lakes Regional Hospital in Leitchfield.

He was born on Jan. 16, 1939 in Philadelphia, the son of the late Leroy and Ruth (Weitzel) Pfautz.

He attended the Rabbit Flat Baptist Church. Charles was in the U.S. Navy. He was a drywall finisher for 55 years. He also belonged to the Friendly Horseman’s Club in Denver, and had a passion for his horses and his family.

Charles is survived by his wife of almost 38 years: Barbara (Stover) Pfautz; two sons: Charles A. Pfautz Jr. and John A. Pfautz (Tammy), both of Pennsylvania; one step-son: Dana Demmy of Pennsylvania; one daughter: Laura Wanner of Caneyville; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services were March 31 at the Rabbit Flat Baptist Church, Caneyville, Ky. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery

Mary Jane Seidel, 84, well-known EMT, clerk, Review columnist

Mary Jane (Titlow) Seidel, 84, of Frederick, Md., died Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at Northampton Manor Home in Frederick.

She was the wife of the late Barry L. Seidel who preceded her in death in 2007. Barry was the love of her life for more than 53 years. Born in Reading, she was the daughter of the late K. Raymond and Mary C. Titlow.

Mary Jane graduated from Muhlenberg High School, Reading, attended Syracuse University and graduated from Albright College with a degree in mathematics and a minor in German. She was a homemaker and subsequently retired after 30 years of part-time employment from Turkey Hill Minute Market in Akron, where she enjoyed knowing most of the townspeople. Mary Jane was a Pennsylvania State Certified Emergency Medical Technician and served with the Ephrata Ambulance for almost 10 years. She delivered a baby on one of her calls. Mary Jane was a member of the Akron Women’s Civic Club for more than 30 years, serving as President for a portion of the time. She also wrote a column for the Ephrata Review and served on the Ephrata Public Library Board of Directors. She also did tutoring for special-needs children in the Ephrata School District. Mary Jane was a voracious master of needlepoint, winning top Pennsylvania state awards for her work. In addition, she was an avid bowler for several decades in a weekly women’s league at 222 Dutch Lanes in Akron.

Mary Jane is survived by her three sons: Geoffrey D. Seidel and wife Robin, Walkersville, Md.; Peter S. Seidel and wife Patricia, Lawrenceville, Ga.; and Andrew R. Seidel and wife Suzanne, Ephrata; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Interment at Laureldale Cemetery, Muhlenberg Township, took place Saturday, March 28.

Jacob John Lopez, 27, of Ephrata, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, March 28, 2015, in Morgantown.

He was born in Lansdale to John and Terry E. (Morgan) Lopez of Denver and was the fiancé of Kelly J. Tshudy.

Jacob had been employed by Timet in Morgantown for three years. He was a dedicated family man who simply loved life and lived it to the fullest. Jacob lived for his kids. Growing up he tinkered with everything which carried on to his adult years. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and fixing cars in his spare time. Some of his favorite things to do were skateboarding, shooting, and lifting. He did everything with passion and touched the lives of everyone that knew him.

In addition to his parents and fiancée, he is survived by his two sons: Kaydn Bently Lopez and Carter Owen Kautz; maternal grandmother: Betty Morgan of Lansdale; paternal grandmother: Milagros Lopez of Phoenixville; three brothers: Joshua John Lopez of Lansdale, Jordon John Lopez of Stevens, Jesse John Lopez of Oklahoma; and two nephews: Matthew and Caleb Lopez.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 2, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 3 Denver Road, Denver, followed by his funeral service at 12 p.m., with Rev. Keith Sweitzer officiating. Interment will take place in the Mellinger’s Union Cemetery.

Mary C. Eshleman, 86, formerly of Ephrata, homemaker, attended Grace Fellowship Church

Mary C. Eshleman, 86, a resident of United Zion Home in Lititz, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2015.

Her husband, the late Christian Z. Eshleman, passed away July 26, 2004, after 58 years of marriage. Mary was born in Lancaster, a daughter of the late John H. and Alice (Leonard) Smith.

She was a member of Grace Fellowship Church in Ephrata and was a homemaker.

Surviving are five children: Rosemary, wife of Jack Miller, of Lititz; Christian Z. Eshleman Jr., husband of Janet, of Denver; Alice, wife of Herbert Richwine of Lititz; Robert E. Eshleman, husband of Kathi, of Williamsburg; and Kevin J. Eshleman, husband of Shirley, of Ephrata; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and sister: Jennie McBride of Ephrata.

Funeral services were held at Grace Fellowship Church, Ephrata on April 6, with the Rev. Frank D. Rice officiating. She was buried in Mellingers Mennonite Cemetery, Lancaster.

Bethany Ann (McClearen) Barker, 25, of Nanticoke, went to be with the Lord, Monday, March 30, 2015.

She was born in Lancaster, daughter of William A. and Hilde (Bryson) McClearen of Denver.

Bethany was a 2007 graduate of Lancaster Mennonite High School. She was a beloved daughter, sister, and mother.

In addition to her parents, Bethany is survived by a son: Addison Douglas McClearen of Denver; two daughters: Serenity Rayne Barker of New Providence, and Christina Marie Scarafile of Nanticoke; a brother: Douglas E. McClearen of Louisville, Ky.; a niece: Lillian May McClearen of Louisville, Ky. and her companion: Jonathon Scarafile.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Esther C. Smith, 85, formerly of Reamstown, passed away Friday, April 3, at Ephrata Manor.

She was born in Reinholds to the late Lloyd and Kathryn (Gerhart) Sweigart and was the wife of the late Dean C. Smith, who passed away in 2003.

Esther was a member of Salem Lutheran Church of Reamstown, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Reinholds V.F.W. She enjoyed watching NASCAR races. During her working years, Esther worked for Weave Corp., Denver; Husin & Rosenau, Ephrata; and Family Restaurant, Ephrata.

Esther is survived by a son: Brian C. Burkhart of Ephrata; four step-children: Dennis, husband of Fay Smith of Spring Grove; Bruce, husband of Carol Smith of Newmanstown; Sue, wife of Doug Jordan of Reamstown; Sterling, husband of Carol Smith of Reamstown; two grandchildren: Shawn and Brian Burkhart Jr.; five great grandchildren: Tiffany, Karissa, Makynze, Masyn and Kody; six step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and four sisters: Arlene Fuller of Reinholds; Erma Parsons of Stevens; Linda Echternacht of Smokestown; and Karen, wife of Elvin Weber of Denver.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Barry and Harold Sweigart; and a sister: Helen Roth.

A viewing will be held on Friday, April 10, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, followed by funeral services held at 11 a.m., with Rev. Stephen Hollinger officiating. Interment will take place in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Sinking Spring.

Lawrence Laverne Manmiller Jr., 87, of Wernersville, passed away Monday, March 23, 2015, at the Reading Hospital.

He was born in Reading to the late Lawrence L. Manmiller Sr.

Lawrence served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had worked as a custodian at the Wernersville State Hospital. He was an avid bowler and enjoyed golfing.

He is survived by two sons: Thomas Manmiller of Ephrata; Kevin, husband of Patricia Manmiller of Seven Valleys; two daughters: Kim, wife of James Fromm of Ephrata; Lisa, wife of Edward Gormley of South Carolina; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister: Vivian Sweitzck of Hamburg.

In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by a grandchild.

A graveside service was held April 7 at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, with military honors.

Marie O. Hammond, age 81, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at Nathan Adelson Hospice, Las Vegas.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 11, at 11 a.m. at the Mill Creek Bible Church, 270 Strasburg, Pike, Lancaster, with the Reverend J. Philip Good officiating. Following the service there will be a time of greeting and fellowship with the family. Marie was privately interred with her dear husband, Clinton, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
