James A. Simmons, 62, Stevens, Protestant, enjoyed hunting, golfing, riding his Harley

James A. Simmons, 62, of Stevens, passed away, Friday, July 26, 2019 at Reading Hospital, of natural causes.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late William H. and Helen J. (Poorman) Simmons. He was the loving husband of Joanna B. (Barrett) Simmons.

Of the Protestant faith, Jim enjoyed hunting, golfing, and riding his Harley motorcycle.

He will be sadly missed by his only son: Scott R. Simmons, husband of Ashleigh, of Manheim; sisters: Jane Norris, wife of Richard, of Howard, Ohio; and Susan Zeigler, of Mount Joy; grandchildren: Austin James and Kinsley Kelly; and brother-in-law: Dan Murray, of Media.

He was preceded in death by his sister: Patricia Murray.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Karen L. Shank, 53, Giant cashier, loved reading and puzzles, PSU and Philly sports fan

Karen L. Shank, 53, of Ephrata, passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2019, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was born in Ephrata to Janet E. (Dierwechter) Shank and the late Louis W. Shank.

Karen was a cashier for Giant. She loved to read, do puzzle books and was an avid Penn State and Philadelphia sports fan.

In addition to her mother, Karen is survived by a brother:: L. Andrew Shank of Ephrata; a sister: Diane, wife of Robert Evans of Great Falls, Mont.; and three nephews: Kenton, Mitchell and Logan Evans.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her longtime partner: Ed Cibula.

The family would like to thank the staff at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital ICU for their kindness and the care Karen received.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Edgar M. Martin, 82, farmer, drove for Stevens Feed, Faith Mennonite Fellowship member

Edgar M. Martin, 82, of Ephrata, passed away on Wednesday, July 31, 2019, at Lancaster General Hospital.

He was born in New Holland to the late Edgar M. and Mary G. (Martin) Martin, and was the husband of Arlene G. (Zimmerman) Martin, with who he celebrated 60 years of marriage in May.

He was a member of Faith Mennonite Fellowship, Stevens. Edgar was a farmer and was a truck driver for Stevens Feed Mill.

In addition to his wife, Edgar is survived by five children: Louise, wife of Ernest Hoover of Manheim; Scott, husband of Lydia (Martin) Martin of Missouri; Mary, wife of Paul Zimmerman of Minnesota; Cheryl, wife of Ray Baker of Wisconsin; Ed, husband of Tina (Martin) Martin of Ephrata; 32 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and five siblings: Arlene Weaver; Lydia Kurtz; Willis Martin; Laura, wife of Frank Weaver; and Ray, husband of Elva Martin.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Clarence Lee Martin; and two brothers: Clarence and Melvin Martin.

Services were held Aug. 4 at the Martindale (Brick) Mennonite Church, Ephrata. Interment took place in the adjoining cemetery.

Melvin Z. Sensenig, 90, Harvey Wise mason, enjoyed flea markets, was devoted to his family

Melvin Z. Sensenig, 90, of Ephrata, passed away early Saturday morning, Aug. 3, 2019 at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

Born in Red Run, Brecknock Township, he was a son of the late Oliver H. and Mary W. (Zimmerman) Sensenig.

Melvin was a mason, laying brick for Harvey Wise Masonry for 44 years then later retired from Horst Construction in 1994. He resided with his sister, Shirley, and lovingly cared for her needs over the past few years.

Melvin was a hard worker and enjoyed the simple things in life. He always kept a pristine yard and flower garden. He was an antique collector and enjoyed an occasional trip to local flea markets. Melvin never missed a weekly call to his sister, Minerva. Family was important to Melvin, and he had special relationships with his nieces and nephews.

Melvin is survived by two sisters: Minerva Z. Martin of Stevens and Shirley M. Sensenig of Ephrata; five nieces and nephews: Bruce Sensenig, husband of Denise (Kalbach); Dale Martin, husband of Sue (Zimmerman); Vincent Sensenig, husband of Crystal (Hersh), Donna (Martin) Hahn, wife of Chris; and Deborah (Sensenig) Youndt, wife of Richard; 15 great-nieces and nephews; and 14 great-great-nieces and nephews.

Melvin was predeceased by his older brother: Raymond Z. Sensenig; and younger brother: Leroy Z. Sensenig.

Services were held Aug. 7 at Good Sipler Funeral & Cremation Centre, Reamstown, followed by interment in Hahnstown United Zion Cemetery, Ephrata. Services were officiated by Rev. Matthew A. Hill.

Gladys M. Frey, 90, worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital, mother of six, enjoyed crocheting, baking

Gladys M. Frey, 90, of Stevens, and formerly of Lititz, died peacefully on Thursday, July 31, 2019 at Gardens of Stevens.

Born in Akron, she was the daughter of the late Emery B. and Anna Hibshman Shenk. Gladys was the loving wife of the late Richard B. Frey, who died in December of 2016.

Gladys worked in the housekeeping department of the former St. Joseph Hospital, Lancaster. Her interests included: crocheting, embroidery, baking, and spending time with her family.

Surviving are three daughters: Sherry L. wife of James Bowden of Lititz; Glenna A. Ford of Mount Wolf; Donna Frey of Ephrata; three sons: Ronald W., husband of Peg Frey of Jonestown; Stan E., husband of Justine Frey of Lititz; Dwayne E.. husband of Tammy Frey of Ephrata; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother: William husband of Arlene Shenk of Ephrata; and two sisters: Darla Wanner, Orvilla Oberholtzer, all of Ephrata.

Preceding her in death is a granddaughter: Megan Sheely, a son-in-law: Randy E. Ford; four sisters: Shirley Pfautz, Ethel Getz, Ruth Scheaffer, Bernice Weaver; and three brothers: Clarence Shenk, Marvin Shenk, Emery Shenk Jr.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Memory Gardens, Ephrata.

Menno Nolt Rissler, 87, formerly of Cocalico, farmer, jack of many trades, was a missionary in Belize

Menno Nolt Rissler, 87, of Latham, Mo., passed away Saturday, July 27, 2019, at his home.

He was born May 3, 1932, in Lancaster County, a son of the late Daniel S. and Lizzie M. (Nolt) Rissler.

On Aug. 14, 1954, in Lebanon County, he was united in marriage to Lois Emma Miller, who preceded him in death Dec. 22, 2016.

Menno, who was raised in the Muddy Creek area, was a farmer for many years. At one time he heeled shoes, and various times worked at machine shops. On the side, he enjoyed various other occupations, such as selling Amway and Agri King premixes, working at Rod and Staff as a maintenance man, owning a laundromat and dry cleaners, operating an Echo chainsaw franchise, and selling bolts. For about the last 20 years, he enjoyed driving team people. Before moving to this area, he and his wife served as missionaries in Belize for approximately six years.

Additional survivors include two sons: Leon and wife Charlotte Rissler of Latham, Mo.; and Glen and Isabel Rissler of West Liberty, Ky.; a daughter: Karen Sue Rissler of Lititz; a foster daughter: Tammy Kay Fox and husband Thomas of Myerstown; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Services were held Aug. 1 at Versailles Mennonite Church, Versailles, Mo., with interment in the Versailles Mennonite Church Cemetery.

Kerri Ann Vogel, 49, enjoyed working with children with autism, Lyme-sufferer’s advocate

Kerri Ann Vogel, 49, went to be in the presence of Jesus on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at the home she shared with her committed husband, James Vogel; “Jamie,” the love of her life, in Victoria, Texas.

Kerri was born in Reading. on Jan. 18, 1970. Kerri grew up near Bowmansville, and also resided in Lincoln, Ephrata and Adamstown before moving to Victoria, Texas.

Kerri suffered from long term neurological Lyme disease, Babesia and Bartonella. All of which she advocated for with passion and commitment.

Kerri graduated in 1988 from Garden Spot high school in New Holland. She received her associate’s degree in Pennsylvania and her bachelor’s for elementary and special education from Grand Canyon University. She enjoyed working with autistic children. She also received a paralegal certification from Texas A&M.

Kerri is survived by her loving parents: Dannie and Hal Smith; a brother: Jason Gordon; daughters: Alisha, wife of Joshua Holt; and Emily Brubaker; sons: Aaron Raia; and Tyler Brubaker, husband of Christie. She is also survived by her stepdaughter: Kristen, wife of Joel Antrom; stepson: Jeff Vogel; stepbrothers: Scott Smith, husband of Evonnie; and Eric Smith, husband of Lisa. Kerri had seven grandchildren.

Kerri will be remembered most for her compassion and love for family, friends, and all who randomly met her. Kerri had a hearty laugh, beautiful smile and you always knew when she was in the room.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday Aug. 15, at 6 p.m. at St. John’s UCC, 659 S. 4th St., Denver. All are welcome.

Kenneth Lee Fleming, 78, U.S. Navy retiree, senior nuclear engineer for GE, ham radio enthusiast

Kenneth Lee Fleming, 78, of Ephrata, formerly of Blandon, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, Aug. 2, 2019, at Wyomissing Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born Oct. 2, 1940, in Aurora, Ill., son of the late Allen and Myrtle (Ness) Fleming.

Ken joined the Navy in 1960, retiring after 22 years as a senior chief electronic technician submarine qualified. Ken was proud to be a member of the Silent Services, spending time on seven submarines during his tours of duty. While in the Navy, he received his bachelor’s degree from Chapman University in 1981.

Upon retirement from the Navy in 1982, he was employed by General Electric Nuclear Services, as a senior nuclear engineer. He moved to Pennsylvania as a startup engineer for the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant. After retiring from GE in 2001, he enjoyed traveling the U.S. with his wife. Many adventures were had.

Growing up in a railroad family, Ken had a lifelong love of trains and had become an ardent volunteer of the WW&F Railroad in Maine. He rediscovered his teenage hobby upon retirement, and once again became a ham radio operator. He could travel the world on that radio.

Ken’s love of Lancaster County began as a seasonal camper at Lake In Wood Resort in Bowmansville. This led to his volunteering at the Weaverland Produce Auction for seven years where he made many friends with the workers and sellers. He was “the crazy Englishman who talked to the horses.” This was the highlight of his retirement. He so loved Lancaster County that he moved to Farmersville five years ago.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years: Christine A. Fleming; and his son: William “Ben” Fleming of Columbia, S.C.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 23 years: Genevieve “Betsy” Fleming, who passed in 1994; and a brother: Marshall Fleming.

Service will be private at the convenience of the family.

Robert G. Herzer, 91, EHS grad, WWII vet, Vo-Tech teacher, active in church and Lititz community

Robert G. Herzer, 91, of Luther Acres, passed away Tuesday, July, 30, 2019, at UPMC Pinnacle, Lititz.

He was born in Ephrata to the late Bernard and Mary (Stautler) Herzer. Robert celebrated 69 years of marriage with his wife Mary “Margaret” (Smith) Herzer on June 17.

A 1946 graduate of Ephrata High School, Robert entered the U.S. Navy and served for two years at the end of World War II. When discharged from the Navy, he enrolled in machine shop education at Stevens Trade and then completed his apprenticeship at Precision Machine Company in Lancaster.

Robert worked at Alcoa as a tool and die maker for 15 years and attended night classes at Temple University for seven of those years, earning a master’s in vocational education. He then taught machine shop at Willow Street Vo-Tech for 23 years. In retirement, Robert worked part-time as maintenance manager for Manheim Township School District.

An active member of Lititz Moravian Church, Robert served on the board of elders, and as treasurer of the men’s and women’s Bible class. He also served as an usher for church services and as a dierner for the Love Feast.

Robert was active in BSA Troop 42, Lititz, for 37 years, including being Scoutmaster. Scouting activities like hiking at Philmont Scout Reservation, and sailing and scuba diving in the Bahamas ultimately inspired him to become a teacher.

He also enjoyed bicycling rail trails, with Lehigh Gorge State Park and North Bend State Park, W.Va., being two of his favorite places to ride. Robert was an avid kayaker as well.

He volunteered in the community serving on the Lititz Springs Park Board for 20 years and being involved in the construction of the Welcome Center and helped obtain the caboose for the park. Robert also volunteered at Moravian Manor driving the resident’s bus for concerts, bowling and fishing outings. At Luther Acres he drove the inside cart and volunteered in the wood shop, making various items for the bazaar.

A real people person, Bob was very friendly with everyone.

In addition to his wife: Margaret; Robert is survived by their four sons: Kent G. Herzer, Lancaster; Karl R. Herzer, Mount Joy; Kurt B. Herzer, husband of Sue (Supplee), New Holland; and Kevin L. Herzer, Elizabethtown; five: grandchildren: Karyn, wife of Daniel Fetzer, Lancaster; Troy Herzer, Myerstown; Kyle Herzer, husband of Abby (Harnly), Akron; Zachary Herzer, husband of Melyssa (Hamm), Manheim; and Dylan Herzer, Elizabethtown; and four great-grandchildren: Skylar, Micah, Evelyn and Amelia Herzer.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings: Olive Dolan and Harry Herzer.

Family and friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Eshbach Parlor of Brothers House, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of Lititz Moravian Church, on Wednesday, Aug. 14. Rev. Dean R. Jurgen will officiate. Private interment will be in Moravian Cemetery.

Daniel S. King, 69, of Lititz, died unexpectedly of natural causes Aug. 8 while working at one of his properties. A retired farmer and father of eight, he was a member of the Old Order Amish Church. Two of his children live in Stevens: Naomi, married to Benuel King; and Sadie Mae, married to Elmer Kauffman.

Burnell F. Lausch, 98, MCSD custodian, married 74 years, coin collector and avid bowler

Burnell F. Lausch, 98, of Ephrata, and formerly of Manheim, died peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019 at the Ephrata Manor Retirement Community.

Born in Elstonville, he was the son of the late Jonas and Barbara Frey Lausch. Burnell was the loving husband of Kathleen Henry Lausch, and they would have observed their 74th wedding anniversary in October of this year.

Burnell worked many years as a custodian for the Manheim Central School District; he also was a self-employed antique refinisher for 35 years. He was a member of Ebenezer Evangelical Congregational Church, Brownstown. Burnell enjoyed collecting coins during the years. He had a deep passion for the sport of bowling; and was a member of many bowling leagues in Lancaster County. Burnell was known to be the first person to bowl a perfect 300 game at Dutch Lanes in Ephrata.

Surviving in addition to his wife: Kathleen; is a daughter: Sandra J., wife of LeRoy Monper of Leola; a son: Ronald E., husband of Brenda Lausch of Pennsburg; three grandchildren: Mark Monper (Donna), J. Michael Lausch (Sheri), Denise Monper Warfel (Michael); and 10 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are two brothers: Robert and Paul Lausch.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Interment will be in Hernley Mennonite Cemetery.

Melvin F. Franek, 89, Navy Seabees vet, was stationed at the Presidential Retreat, USPS worker

Melvin D. Franek, 89, of Ephrata, passed away at Keystone Villa under the care of Hospice on Aug. 6, 2019.

Born Dec. 31, 1929 in Sargent, Nebraska, Mel was preceded in death by his wife, Jane E. Franek, in 2009.

Mel was a Navy veteran that rose to the rank of Chief Construction Mechanic in the Seabees. He served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was later stationed at the Presidential Retreat at Camp David Md., during the administrations of Johnson, Nixon, Ford, and Carter. Upon retiring from the Navy, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Hagerstown, Md.

Mel is survived by a stepdaughter: Gayle L. Weagly Cote and husband Peter of Ephrata; and stepson: George C. Weagly of Hagerstown, Md.; four grandchildren: Aaron Cote and wife Kelly of West Windsor, N.J.; Celeste Cote and partner Richard Stevenson of Ephrata; Justin Cote and wife Rachelle of Mars; and Simon Cote and wife Amber of Reinholds; eight great-grandchildren: Austin, Bridget, Mya, Colin, Keely, Blake, Rowan and Riley; and a sister: Betty Peterson of Omaha Nebraska.

He was a member of the Kingdom Hall Jehovah’s Witnesses in New Holland. Mel loved spending time with family and friends. He particularly enjoyed sharing stories of his many adventures from his Navy days. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

There will be private family service held in Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown, Md.

Paul B. Kline, 91, farmer, Soil Conservation District worker, annual tractor show host

Paul B. Kline, 91 years young, of Brunnerville, passed away after a brief illness, on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim.

Born on Nov. 15, 1927, Paul was a son of the late Samuel and Ada (Bowman) Kline.

He is survived by three children: Nancy (Wade) Hall, Carol (Kenneth) Weaver, and Jeffrey Kline (Alvina); nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Mae U. Kline; son: Ronald Kline; and brother: John Kline.

Paul was an active farmer until his mid 80s. He was a pioneer of soil conservation and worked for the Soil Conservation District. He was a member of the Manheim and PA Young Farmers.

Paul had a love of antique tractors and will be remembered by many for his annual June tractor show in Brunnerville.

Funeral services were held Aug. 13 in the Hoffer Auditorium at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim.

George Nelson Swann, 80, federal government worker, animal lover, enjoyed cooking Sunday dinner

George Nelson Swann, 80, of Ephrata, entered into the rest of our Lord on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019, after a brief illness.

A celebration of life service will be held at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 659 S. 4th St., Denver, on Friday, Aug.16 at 6 p.m.

George was born on Dec. 8, 1938 in Kearny, N.J., to Robert and Susan (Blackties) Swann. He graduated from Susquehanna University and worked in various capacities for the federal government for more than 30 years.

George is survived by his wife of 56 years: Jean; daughter: Jean Ann (wife of Michael) Hutchison; sons: George (husband of Camille) Swann, John (husband of Stephanie) Swann; grandchildren: Taylor and Grace Hutchison; Grant, Aiden, Elise, and Owen Swann; and Ainsley Swann; sisters-in-law: Nina Strickler and Pat Swann; and many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.

George was preceded in death by his parents and his two older brothers: Jack Dale and Robert Swann.

George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Family was the most important thing to George. He enjoyed cooking Sunday dinners for his family and also enjoyed spending time relaxing and fishing at the family cottage in Maryland. George was a sensitive soul who loved animals, especially his beloved pets. He was an active member of St. John’s United Church of Christ.

Marian D. Martin, 91, EHS band aide, active at church, enjoyed cooking, had a servant’s heart

Marian D. Martin, 91, of Ephrata, formerly of Akron, passed away on Monday, Aug. 5, 2019, at Ephrata Manor.

She was born in Mohnton to the late Margaret Zerr, and was the wife of the late Lynn R. Martin, who passed away in 2017.

She was a member of Grace EC Church, Akron, where she was a long serving member of the choir, a Sunday school teacher, a youth group leader and prayer meeting leader.

For most of her life, Marian was a homemaker. She previously worked for Faerie Silk Mills and Tiny Tim Dinette, both in Shillington. She was a volunteer at ECC Retirement Community, Myerstown, for 30 years, a reading tutor at Akron Elementary and an Ephrata High School band aide. She enjoyed entertaining and cooking for family and friends. She was known for her servant’s heart and was a mentor for many, always cooking meals and helping those in their time of need.

Marian is survived and will be lovingly missed by two sons: Jeffrey L., husband of Dawn (Wenger) Martin of Ephrata; Bruce R. Martin, spouse of John Haney of Lancaster; a daughter: Susan D. Martin of Akron; four grandchildren: Matthew, husband of Shanon Martin; Mark, husband of Katie Martin; Michelle, wife of Cesar Santiago; Shane, husband of Kylie Weaver; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved grand-puppy: Pebbles.

Services were held at Grace E.C. Church, Akron, on Aug. 9, with Rev. Leslie Cool officiating. Interment was in Fairview Cemetery, Shillington.

The family would like to acknowledge and extend heartfelt thanks to the loving and compassionate caregivers at Ephrata Manor who, for the past two years, have made our mother feel at home and went the extra mile over these past two months. The family also appreciates the extra care and support received over the past weeks from the caregivers at Hospice and Community Care.

Phyllis Joan Weber, 86, R.N. at ECH, Maple Farms, loved music, scout leader, volunteer, and poet

Phyllis Joan (Ash) Weber, 86, of Ephrata, and formerly of Reading, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019, at Ephrata Manor surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in West Reading on Feb. 8, 1933 to the late Phillip and Pauline Erma (Kline) Ash. Phyllis was a 1950 Reading High School graduate. She played violin and viola in the high school orchestra and enjoyed music all her life.

Phyllis was a Registered Nurse. She graduated from Reading Hospital in 1953 and worked at Memorial Hospital in Pottstown, and Ephrata Community Hospital with children, mothers and babies. Her career continued at Maple Farms followed by working alongside several family practice doctors in their offices. She retired in 1997, but continued to provide her nursing skills to friends and family.

She was a member and sang in the choir at Bethany United Church of Christ, Ephrata.

Service in her community was important to Phyllis. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout den leader. She helped with the Akron Lions Club and the Ephrata Farm Show stand projects. She was active with the quilt group at Bethany, and bridge club. She loved to sew, knit, crochet, collect Depression glass, make jewelry, play piano, and write poems.

Phyllis was a caregiver and loved her growing family and spending time with them. She enjoyed travel, attending concerts and programs, celebrating holidays, birthdays, and weddings.

In addition to her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years: Fred R. Weber; and her brother: Dr. Rodney Ash.

She is survived by two daughters: Patti Jo, wife of David Hibshman of Palmyra; Peggy Anne, wife of Donald Grabowski of Elizabethtown; one son: Michael Fred Weber and his wife Jane of Ephrata; a sister-in-law: Ruth, wife of the late Dr. J. Walter High; nine grandchildren: Eric Hibshman and his wife Amy, Jeff Hibshman and his wife Jennie, Paul and his wife Gina, Steven and Ben Grabowski, Justin Weber and his wife Heather, Christian and his wife Apoorva, Laura and Meleny Weber; and eight great-grandchildren: Morgan and Logan Hibshman; Coleson and Kayla Hibshman; Miles, Lily, and Finn Weber; and Adelai Grabowski.

A tribute to her life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 10 a.m. at Bethany United Church of Christ, 140 E. Main St., Ephrata. The family will receive friends before the service from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Jonathon T. Wise, 18, Martin’s Ag worker, Weaverland Mennonite Church member, had 13 siblings

Jonathon T. Wise, 18, of New Holland, passed away on Sunday, Aug. 11, 2019, as a result of an accident.

Born in Reading, he was the son of Luke R. and Carol J. Weaver Wise of New Holland.

Jonathon was employed by Martin’s Ag Service. He enjoyed working on vehicles and helping out with whatever needed done. He was a member of the Weaverland Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference.

Surviving besides his parents are eight brothers: Jeffrey, husband of Brenda Leid Wise of Narvon; Cordell, husband of Lorelle Hursh Wise of Ephrata; Ryan, husband of April Brubacker Wise of Stevens; Jay, husband of Tiffany Judkins Wise of East Earl; David Wise, and Jared Wise, both of Leola; and Gary Wise, and Kenton Wise, both of New Holland; three sisters: Kendra of Summerfield, Ohio; Sabrina Wise, and Kaitlyn Wise both of New Holland. He is also survived by a special friend: Janita Weaver; a paternal grandmother: Anna Wise of Myerstown; and maternal grandparents: Edward and Arlene Weaver of New Holland.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandparents: Luke and Lydia Wise; and by two brothers: Justin and Jordan Wise.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. at the Martindale Mennonite Fellowship Center, 352 Martindale Road, Ephrata. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 9:30 a.m. at the Weaverland Mennonite Church, 1120 Weaverland Road, East Earl, with Bishop Amos G. Martin officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

Warren M. Hackman, 61, EHS grad, president/co-owner of New Holland Apparel, enjoyed scuba diving

Warren M. Hackman, 61, of Akron, passed away Friday, Aug. 9, 2019, at his residence.

He was born in Ephrata to Elaine (Fake) Hackman and the late Lloyd R. Hackman, and was the husband of Wendy Melissa (Castillo) Hackman.

Warren was a 1975 graduate of Ephrata High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from Philadelphia College of Textile & Sciences. He was president and co-owner of New Holland Apparel. He served on the board of directors of the Hamilton Club of Lancaster, and the Maquila Association of Honduras.

Warren was an outstanding devoted father and husband. His hobbies included travel, scuba diving, hunting, fishing, flying, and car collecting.

In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by three children: Samira M., Emma G., and Gianna B. Hackman; five siblings: Suzanne H.K., wife of Randy Morgan; M. Louise, wife of Kenneth Hess; David L., husband of Amy (Cardina) Hackman; Annette, wife of Christopher Radcliffe; and Christine, wife of Steve Myers.

A celebration of life gathering will be held on Friday, Aug. 16, from 5 to 8 p.m., at The Brownstone Manor, Corner of Broad and Orange Streets, Lititz. Parking is available at Lititz Mutual Insurance, 2 N. Broad St., Lititz.

Frances E. Hill, 79, Ephrata Hospital R.N., EPAC props mistress, Ephrata Library board member

Frances Elizabeth (Burroughs) Hill, 79, of Ephrata, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2019.

Fran was born on Feb. 6, 1940, and graduated from Merchantville High School in 1957. She earned her R.N. from Presbyterian School of Nursing in Philadelphia in 1960. She married Phillip R. Hill on Dec. 21, 1961. They were married for 43 years until Phil’s death in 2005.

She retired from nursing in 2002 after holding positions at Ephrata Hospital and in private practices in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Fran geeked theatre. She was a founding member of the Nuremberg Community Players in northeastern Pennsylvania, an actress and director for Brecknock Little Theater, and the props mistress for EPAC for nearly 25 years. She also served on the board of the Ephrata Public Library.

Fran is survived by her daughters: Jennifer Hill of East Greenville; and Kristen McQuillin of Kamogawa, Japan; her granddaughter: Helen Kaucher of Ephrata; and her brother: George Burroughs of Magalia, Calif. She was much loved and considered a big sister by many.

Friends will be received at Eicher Arts Center from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18. Interment was private.

Eleanor Ruth Wealand, 93, DHS grad, RCA retiree, member of Polkateers, collected cookbooks

Eleanor Ruth (Hess) Wealand, 93, formerly of Clay Township, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2019 at Brethren Village, where she had resided the past several years.

She was born in Belleville to the late Reverend Elmer D. and Mazie (Musser) Hess, and was the youngest of their 14 children.

Ruth was a graduate of Denver High School, Class of 1944. She married Lowell R. Wealand on June 27, 1948. They were happily married for 62 years.

She retired from the RCA Corporation in 1986, where she had worked in the accounting office for many years. She was an avid reader all her life and loved collecting cookbooks. She and her husband were members of the Early Bird Walking Club from Ephrata, and the Dutchland Polkateers. They traveled throughout the United States after retirement. She was a member of Grace Fellowship Church in Ephrata.

Ruth is survived by her daughter: Kathy Diane, married to Jonathan Gyorke, of Akron; her grandson: Brett Diem, married to Genny Anglin Diem, of Lititz; a great-grandson: Dakota Michael Diem, a nuclear operator in the U.S. Navy, stationed in Norfolk, Va.; a sister-in-law: Gloria L. Wissler, Lancaster; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Lowell; and was the last of her siblings.

Services were held Aug. 19 at Mt. Airy Cemetery.
