Richard Méndez, 65, Lebanon S.D. teacher, enjoyed discussing Bible, learning languages

Richard Méndez, 65, of Ephrata, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, April 7, 2019.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. he was the son of the late Ricardo Méndez Lugo and Lydia Rosa Perez- Méndez. Richard was survived by his loving wife of 25 years: Beverly A. Josephs-Méndez

Other survivors include his children: Rose Monroy, Richard Méndez III, Veronica Méndez, Megan Méndez and Tamara DiCicco; grandchildren: Nicole, James, Isabella, Domenic, Carmen, Braden, Lucia, Javier, Zarah, Giselle and Caprice; and a brother: Edwin Méndez.

Richard, who had a passion for teaching, started his teaching career in Brooklyn, N.Y. When he moved to Pennsylvania, he continued teaching in the Lebanon School District. He took pride and joy in teaching young individuals to reach their full learning potential. In his spare time, he enjoyed reading, teaching, discussing the Bible with those he knew, working on computers, and learning languages.

Services will be at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 530 New Holland Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 20, at 1 p.m.

Diana A. Hess, 74, Ephrata, former model, doctor’s secretary, loved God and her family

Diana A. Hess, 74, of Ephrata, went to be with her Lord, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Paul Leon Joseph and Carmelle J. (Desautels) Bruneau.

Diana was a member of New Covenant Church of God. In her early years she was a commercial advertisement model in a local Winnipeg newspaper. She had also worked as a medical secretary and receptionist for Dr. Chang, also in Winnipeg. She was a graduate of Red River Community College in Winnipeg.

Diana was the loving wife of James L. Hess, with whom she shared 41 years of marriage. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her daughter: D. Gail, wife of Bill G. McFadden of Ephrata; and a twin brother: Dennis Bruneau, who resides in West Kelowna, British Columbia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband: Anthony “Tony” Morin.

Diana loved her family very much. They were a very important part of her life. Her passion was sharing the love of Jesus with others and introducing them to the Lord Jesus Christ.

The family extends their sincere thanks and appreciation to all the devoted and loving caregivers at Tremont Health and Rehabilitation Center.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. at the New Covenant Church of God, 111 E. Chestnut St., Ephrata, with a visitation prior beginning at 6 p.m. A private interment took place in Mellingers Mennonite Cemetery.

Dorothy L. Burkholder, 91, Ephrata Manor resident, survived by two children

Dorothy L. (Rathman) Burkholder, 91, of Ephrata Manor, passed away Saturday, April 20, 2019.

Dorothy was the widow of Franklin Burkholder, who passed in 1998, and a daughter of the late William H. and Cora N. (Heck) Rathman.

Dorothy is survived by her son: Randy L. (Nancy) Burkholder of Denver; sister: Joyce M. Andes of Springfield, Ohio; brother: John A. Rathman of Ephrata Manor; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her daughter: Beverly Ann Buchter; and sister: Jean E. Rathman.

Floy E. Nolt, 89, lived at Keystone Villa, survived by five children, married 68 years

Floy E. Nolt, 89, of Ephrata, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Keystone Villa in Ephrata.

Floy was born in Ephrata on Aug. 28, 1929, daughter of the late Paul and Dorothy (Jurrell) Dissler. She was the loving wife of Harold M. Nolt, with whom she would have celebrated 69 years of marriage this June.

In addition to her husband, Floy is survived by five children: Terry Nolt (Ann) of Akron; Vickie Manchester (David) of Stevens; Gary Nolt (Kathy) of Rothsville; Dennis Nolt (Kelly) of Ephrata; and Jan Nolt (Mary Jo) of Akron; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at Hope United Methodist Church, 3474 Rothsville, Road, Ephrata, on Friday, April 26, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends before the service, from 10 to 11 a.m.

Emma N. Martin, 83, of Leola, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2019, at the home of Leon and Anna Zimmerman.

She was born in East Earl Township to the late Rufus M. and Katie (Nolt) Martin, and was the wife of the late Warren R. Martin who passed away in 2010.

A homemaker, Emma was a member of Groffdale Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference).

Emma is survived by 13 children: Aaron, husband of Lena (Reiff) Martin of Penn Yan, N.Y.; Lucy, wife of Paul Weaver Jr., of Lewisburg; Catherine, wife of Edwin Martin of Penn Yan, N.Y.; Lawrence, husband of Doris (Sauder) Martin of Bowmansville; Anna, wife of Leon Zimmerman of Leola; Warren, husband of Norma (Leinbach) Martin of Leola; Eva, wife of Ervin Martin of East Earl; Ruth, wife of Leon Hurst of Thorp, Wisc.; Ella, wife of J. Lloyd Zimmerman of Leola; Emma, wife of Glen Zimmerman of New Holland; Elaine, wife of Lloyd Nolt of Charles City, Iowa; Vera, wife of Leon Burkholder of Greenwich, Ohio; Elvin, husband of Anita (Musser) Martin of Mohnton; 102 grandchildren; 96 great-grandchildren; four brothers: Rufus (Katie) Martin of Mifflinburg; Henry (Vera) Martin of Ionia, Iowa; John (Catherine) Martin of Versailles, Mo.; Aaron (Nancy) Martin of Fortuna, Mo.; and two sisters-in-law: Lydia Martin of Mifflinburg, Edna Martin of New Holland.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson: Joshua; and three brothers: Ammon, Levi and David Martin.

Services were held April 24 at Groffdale Mennonite Church, Leola, with Bishop Ammon Weaver officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

David R. Gainer, 68, of Manheim, died peacefully on April 19 at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy. David was a retired electrician and he was also employed at the Manheim Auto Auction. David was an active member of Lititz United Methodist Church where he played guitar in the contemporary band. He was also a member of the Lancaster Bent Riders Club. His hobbies included camping, tricycling, and playing the guitar. A daughter, Nicole, wife of Sean Colfer, lives in Ephrata.

Mary Lou Haines, 84, of Lititz, died April 19 at Kadima Rehab and Nursing at Lititz. She had been employed at the former Fleet Air Shoe Co. of Ephrata and D&S Machine Co. of Lititz.

Sylvia J. Keller, 85, of Manheim passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 16, at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim. In her earlier years, Sylvia worked at the former Kreider’s Restaurant and Albright’s Grocery Store, Manheim. Sylvia graduated from the former Manheim High School in 1951, and she was a member of the Grace Church of Lititz. Her interests included: baking, gardening, and puzzles. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A daughter, Deb Kurtz, lives in Ephrata.

H. Rodney Martin, 66, East Earl postal carrier, enjoyed Harleys, model railroading, family time

H. Rodney Martin, 66, of Stevens, died Sunday, April 21, 2019 at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

His wife, Carol (Zimmerman) Martin, survives. Born in Ephrata, he was the son of the late Harold H. and V. Lorraine (Gerhart) Martin.

Rod was a postal carrier for the East Earl Post Office for over 40 years and received the 1,000,000 Mile Safe Driver Award. He enjoyed family time, his Harley, model railroading and creating special layouts at Christmas, and loved his pets.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children: Rodney C., married to Shannon Martin, Cameron, N.C.; Robert S. Martin, Havre de Grace, Md.; Wyatt Zimmerman, at home; Haley Zimmerman, at home; seven grandchildren; and a sister: Patricia, married to Perry Buch, New Holland.

His funeral will be held on Thursday, April 25, at 2:30 p.m. at Groff-High Funeral Home, 145 W. Main St., New Holland. Interment will be in Red Run Mennonite Cemetery. A viewing will be held at the funeral home on Thursday from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

Joyce L. Hess, 81, Masonic Village medical secretary, custom drapery creator, Tom Brady fan

Joyce L. Hess, 81, of Elizabethtown, died peacefully on Friday, April 19, 2019 at Masonic Village.

Born in Denver, she was the daughter of the late Robert E. and Minerva Hoster Flicker. Joyce earned an associate’s degree in business from McCann Business School, Reading. From 1988 to 2010 Joyce worked as a medical secretary for Masonic Village at Elizabethtown.

An expert seamstress, Joyce created custom drapery for many clients in the Lancaster County area. Joyce was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Elizabethtown Chapter #407. Her interests included: needlepoint, reading, word search puzzles, rooting for her New England Patriots, and her favorite player Tom Brady. Joyce will miss her cats: Sneakers and Samson; and especially the Masonic Village therapy dog: Daisey.

Surviving is a son: Michael Hess, companion of Ann Hood of Lancaster; a daughter: Lori, wife of Kevin Royer of Lititz; three grandsons: Bradley Royer, Timothy Hess, Robert Hess; and a sister: Shirley Kurtz of East Petersburg.

Memorial service with visitation with the family will be announced at a later date. Interment will be private in Fairview Cemetery, Denver.

Harry A. Brubaker, 86, Ephrata, property manager, antique collector, loved time with grandchildren

Harry A. Brubaker, 86, of Ephrata, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2019 at his home.

He was born in Ephrata on Sept. 23, 1932, son of the late Harry G. and Anna S. (Sheaffer) Brubaker.

Harry is survived by his loving wife: Lois J. (Myers) Brubaker; son: James Brubaker; five grandchildren: Ashley, Jay, Cody, Ostin, and Bradly; three great-grandchildren: Andrew, Alex, and Lorelai; and several nieces.

In addition to his parents, Harry was preceded in death by his daughter: Judy Brubaker Wienand; great-granddaughter: Bella Kimmet; and sister: Pauline Landis.

Harry was a property manager and antique collector. He loved horses and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were held April 24 at Gravenor Home for Funerals, Ephrata. Interment will be private.

Robin Elaine Stewart, 64, of Ephrata, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2019 at her daughter Michelle’s home in Apex, N.C.

She was the loving wife of Pete Stewart of Ephrata, and daughter of the late Donald and Pauline (Lutz) Lees.

Robin went to Garden Spot High School and had worked at Dart Container in Leola, Walmart in Ephrata, and Weaver Markets in Adamstown. She was a Philadelphia Eagles fan and enjoyed being a homebody.

Robin is survived by her husband: Pete; two daughters: Michelle Dupree of Apex, N.C. and Janelle Brown of Millersville; three grandchildren: Isaac, Eden, and Jaiden; a sister: Cherie Ortiz of Ephrata; a brother: Donnie Lees of Manchester, N.H.; a niece: Stacy Kurtz; and two nephews: Corey and Billy Kurtz.

Friends will be received at Paul L. Gravenor Home for Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, on Saturday, April 27, from 10 to 11 a.m. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m.

June E. Wenrich. 84, Ephrata Apparel, Hestco worker, enjoyed making clothing for family

June E. Wenrich, 84, of Ephrata, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2019, at Maple Farm Nursing Center.

She was born in Lincoln to the late Jacob I. and Vera M. (Nolt) Burkholder, and was the wife of Richard H. Wenrich, with whom she shared 67 years of marriage.

June worked for Ephrata Apparel and Hestco for 50 over years. She loved sewing and making clothing for her family. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, June is survived by a daughter: Sharon Kay Frost of Ephrata; two grandsons: James (April) Frost, Jason (Billie) Frost; six great-grandchildren; a brother: Jacob I. Jr., husband of Helen Burkholder; and a sister: Faye, wife of Walt Sollick of Walnutport.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son: Richard R. Wenrich.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 24, from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, followed by funeral services at 2 p.m., with Pastor Timothy Craven officiating. Interment will take place in the Mellingers Union Cemetery.

William C. Hughes, 83, Ephrata Amvets member, enjoyed crossword puzzles, watching sports

William C. Hughes, 83, of Ephrata, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2019, at home.

He was born in Easton to the late Paul and Helen (Crosby) Hughes.

He was a member of Ephrata Amvets Post #136. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching sports, especially baseball, football and golf.

He will be sorely missed by his Amvet family and his good friend, Larry.

Services will be private.

Carole K. Miller, 77, Burnham Boiler retiree, devoted her life to spreading God’s word

Carole K Miller, 77, of Ephrata passed away on April 26, 2019 at Ephrata Hospital.

Born in Myerstown she was the daughter of late Stella (Wartloaf) and Arthur Loeb, and wife of the late Earl E Miller.

Carole was a longtime employee of Burnham Boiler where she was the first woman in the sheet metal fabrication department. She retired in 2000. A devout Christian, Carole devoted much of her retirement helping spread the word of God.

Carole is survived by her brother: Jerry Loeb; and sister: Mildred Rank; and four children: Carl (Elizabeth) Miller of Woodbridge Va.; Larry Miller, Ray Miller, and Brian Miller, all of Ephrata; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services are set for May 4 at Grace Church, 6067 Carpenter St., East Petersburg. Visitation begins at 9 a.m. with a memorial service to follow at 10 a.m., with Pastor Mark Ammerman officiating. Parking and directions can be found at gracesunday.com.

P. Raymond Zimmerman, 89, Ephrata, Blue Ball Water Authority worker, enjoyed fishing and old cars

P. Raymond Zimmerman, 89, of Ephrata, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019, at Lancashire Hall.

He was born in Goodville to the late Samuel M. and Sarah (Burkhart) Zimmerman, and was the husband of Arlene (Ecenroad) Zimmerman.

During his working years, he worked for Blue Ball Water Authority. He enjoyed fishing and old cars.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son: Mervin, husband of Julia Zimmerman of Ephrata: grandchildren: Valerie, wife of Matt Mellinger of Ephrata; and Curtis, husband of Kelly Zimmerman of Mohnton; great-grandchildren: Dylan Kachel, Lindsay Mellinger, Hailie Mellinger, and Maggie Zimmerman; and two brothers: Marty L. Zimmerman of Fivepointville, and Carl L. Zimmerman of Akron.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Marvin Zimmerman; and a sister-in-law: Pauline Zimmerman.

A graveside service was held April 30 at Middle Creek Cemetery, with Pastor David Kling officiating.

Martin M. Eberly Jr., 82, retired farmer, father of five, member of Groffdale Menn. Church

Martin M. Eberly Jr., 82, formerly of Fairmount Road, Ephrata, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019, at Lincoln Christian Home.

He was born in East Earl Township to the late Martin M. and Minnie W. (Martin) Eberly, and was the husband of the late Anna B. (Martin) Eberly who died in May of 2018.

Martin was a member of Groffdale Mennonite Church (Weaverland Conference) He farmed for many years prior to his retirement.

Martin is survived by five children: Nelson M. husband of Theresa (Buttrum) Eberly of Rydal, Ga.; Lois A., wife of James N. Zimmerman of Ephrata; Marvin R., husband of Susan (Fredrickson) Eberly of Reinholds; Mary Jane, wife of Richard N. Burkholder of Leola; Kenneth L., husband of Suzanne (Lally) Eberly of Ephrata; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; four siblings: Elizabeth M., wife of John Elam Zimmerman of Lebanon; Willis M., husband of Myrna Eberly of Reinholds; Edna M., wife of Allen Brubacker of Wisconsin; and John M. Eberly, husband of Abby Rhoads of Terre Hill; two sisters-in-law: Hilda Eberly of Richland, and Esther Mae Eberly of Loysville; and a brother-in-law: Irvin Weaver of Stevens.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Luke, Henry, and Paul Eberly; and four sisters: Eva Kurtz, Esther Weaver, Anna and Minnie Eberly.

Services were held May 1 at Groffdale Mennonite Church, Leola, with Bishop Curvin Z. Zimmerman officiating. Burial took place in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

Clayton M. Lausch, 82, contracted firebrick mason, family man, outdoorsman, enjoyed farming

Clayton M. Lausch, 82, of Reinholds, passed away at home on Saturday, April 27, 2019 surrounded by his loving family.

He was the husband of 61 years to Mildred (Klopp) Lausch. Born in Denver, he was a son of the late William and Elva (Keith) Lausch.

Clayton was a mason by trade and a family-man at heart. He worked as a firebrick mason for various contractors, with many years at Snyder Contractors, retiring in 2002. Clayton’s family was most important to him. He had a special relationship with each of his grandchildren. He loved fishing, hunting, and farming. He was always working on a new project; from building houses to planting backyard berry patches, he was constantly busy. He was the household jokester with his little tricks and smirky grin. He will be dearly missed.

In addition to his wife, Clayton is survived by four children: Linda L. Boyer (partner, Jude Maydwell) of Denver; Bonnie S. Rehlich (Barry) of Denver; Clayton “Chipper” M. Lausch Jr. (Mickey) of Denver; Candy M. Pannebecker of Denver; seven grandchildren: Eric Boyer, Stacy Boyer, Roxane Shiplett, Justin Lausch, Jami Lausch, Hunter Pannebecker, Haley Pannebecker; three great-granddaughters: Isabel Boyer, Abigail Boyer, Britany Shiplett; and brothers- and sister-in-law: Cecelia Lausch, Raymond Zeimer, and Harvey Schlouch.

He is predeceased by his brother: William Lausch; and four sisters: Arlene Groff, Thelma Zeimer, Esther Schlouch, and Kathryn Light.

Viewings will be Wednesday, May 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Thursday, May 2, from 10 to 11 a.m., with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m., all at Good Sipler Funeral & Cremation Centre, 34-38 N. Reamstown Road, Reamstown. Interment will follow in Muddy Creek Cemetery, Denver.

Rufus S. Musser, 90, of Ephrata, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, after a short illness.

Born in Brecknock Township, he was he son of the late Isaac H. and Lena N. (Sauder) Musser. He was the husband of Irene M. Musser for 17 years. His first wife, Esther (Zimmerman) Musser, passed away in 2001.

A retired farmer, Rufus was a member of Meadow Valley Mennonite Church (Weaverland Conference).

In addition to his wife, Rufus is survived by four children: Marlin, husband of Merla (Sensenig) Musser of Lititz’ Lorraine, wife of the late Kenneth Nolt of Lititz; Joyce, wife of Glenn Weaver of Leola; Glenn, husband of Karen (Groff) Musser of Fredericksburg; five stepchildren: Nevin, husband of Anna Mae Zimmerman of East Earl; Jane, wife of Leon Rutt of Mount Joy; Dawn, wife of Curvin Good of Myerstown; Darlene, wife of Sidney Eberly of Robesonia; Janice, wife of Paul Zimmerman of Lititz; 15 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 29 step-grandchildren; 41 step-great-grandchildren; two brothers: Roman (Kathryn) Musser of Lititz, Isaac (Mary Jane) Musser of Narvon; and four sisters, Anna High of Denver; Edna Martin of Myerstown; Mary, wife of Lloyd High of Lititz; Esther, wife of Lloyd Oberholtzer of Richland.

In addition to his first wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Christ, David and John Musser; and a sister: Eva Oberholtzer.

Services were held April 30 at Meadow Valley Mennonite Church, Ephrata, with Bishop Melvin Martin officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

Carl M. White, 80, USMC vet, mechanic, truck driver, camper, survived by seven children

Carl. M. White, 80, of Ephrata, died on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

Carl was born in Farmersville, son of the late Ammon and Martha (Musser) White.

He is survived by his loving wife: Dorothy L. (Weber) White; three daughters: Debra Newswanger, wife of Shawn Clapper of Ephrata; Darbi Knee, wife of George Knee of Vinemont; and Paula Laughlin, wife of Joe Laughlin of Hamburg; four sons: Ronald Newswanger, husband of Lindy, of Brickerville; Ricky Newswanger of Ephrata; Roger Newswanger, companion of Bruce Carswell of Georgia; and Scott Newswanger, husband of Tammy, of Millersville; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a brother: Ammon White, husband of Ruth, of Lancaster; and a sister: Phyllis, wife of Leroy Miller of Schoeneck.

He served in the United States Marine Corps and worked as an auto mechanic and truck driver. Carl was a member of Berean Bible Church in Ephrata. He loved camping, tinkering with motors and cars, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services were held April 30 at Berean Bible Church, Ephrata. Interment with military honors was held at Wolf’s Cemetery, Ephrata.

Laurie Ann Vogt, 58, Akron, marriage, family therapist, hiker, brought joy to all who knew her

Laurie Ann Vogt, 58, of Akron, passed away on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy.

She was born in Iowa City, Iowa, to the late Kennard W. and Marigolde (Kinney) Rumage, and was married to Ronald Vogt, with whom she shared 26 wonderful years of marriage.

In addition to her husband, Laurie is survived by her three children: Emily J. Vogt, Annie J. Vogt, Ellis G. Vogt; an older sister: Deborah Hartman of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; and many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She was a member of Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster and spent many years as a marriage and family therapist at Philhaven and the Samaritan Counseling Center.

She loved spending time outdoors, taking hikes, and exploring new places. She found such joy in friendship and heartfelt connections, touching many people with her warmth and grace. Treasured memories would include discovering National Parks with her family and spending time with her cat companion, Theo. Bringing such light and joy to all who knew her, Laurie will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.

Memorial services were held on April 29 at Blossom Hill Mennonite Church, Lancaster, with Pastor Susan Gascho-Cooke of Community Mennonite Church officiating. Interment was at Witness Park in Lititz.

Memorial contributions in Laurie’s memory may be made to Compassion International, 12290 Voyager Pkwy., Colorado Springs, CO 80997; and Mennonite Central Committee, P. O. Box 500, Akron, PA, 17501, organizations both close to her heart.

Kenneth G. Nauman, 74, PA Scale Co. scale builder, father of two, enjoyed fly fishing and hiking

Kenneth G. Nauman, 74, of Ephrata, passed away on Friday, April 26, 2019, at Gardens at Stevens.

He was born in Florin to the late Irwin K. and Florence M. (Carpenter) Nauman, and was the husband of the late Suzanne (Bockus) Nauman. who passed away in 2017.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, fly fishing, and pretty much everything outdoors. Kenneth built scales for the Pennsylvania Scale Company for over 30 years prior to his retirement.

Kenneth is survived by a son: Kevin R., husband of Jolene A. Nauman of Ephrata; a daughter: Kim Nauman of Akron; a grandson: Austin Nauman; two step-grandchildren: Tom and Dylan Ossman; and two step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a grandchild.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 1, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Stradling Funeral Home, 30 N. Ninth St., Akron. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will take place in the Memory Gardens Memorial Cemetery.
