Lorraine S. Crowther, 79, LNP news carrier, Lions Club, Red Hat member, enjoyed cooking, baking

Lorraine S. Crowther, 79, of Denver, formerly of Ephrata, passed away surrounded by family, on Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia.

She was born in Ephrata to the late Earl and Esther (Stauffer) Sweigart, and was the wife of the late Barry L. Crowther, who passed away in 2009.

Lorraine was a member of Swamp Evangelical Lutheran Church, Reinholds. She delivered the Lancaster Newspaper for over 20 years, was a member of the Ephrata Lions Club and the Red Hat Society. Lorraine loved her grandchildren and enjoyed cooking and baking.

She is survived by a son: Michael A. Crowther; a foster daughter: Kim, wife of Nathan Weaver; two grandchildren: Tandi, wife of Anthony Kashner; Blain Crowther; four foster grandchildren: Josh, Paige, Dillon, and Cierra Weaver; three great-grandchildren: Makiah, Taryn, and Lena; a sister: Evelyn Gehman; and a brother: Mervin Sweigart.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a son: Dane A. Crowther.

Services were held March 28 at Swamp Evangelical Lutheran Church, Reinholds, with Pastor Dennis L. Trout officiating. Interment took place in Swamp Cemetery.

James D. Hauck, 70, High Steel welder, OMPH member, loved his family deeply

James D. Hauck, 70, of Ephrata, passed away on Monday, March 19, 2018, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in Ephrata to the late Warren D. and Susana (Davidson) Hauck, and was the husband of the late Colleen Ann Hauck, who passed away in 1994.

He was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. James was a welder for High Steel. He enjoyed antique cars and loved his family deeply.

James is survived by a son: Cory D., husband of Angie M. Hauck of Ephrata; a daughter: Amber M. Hauck, of Ephrata; two grandchildren: Austin and Rory; a brother: Lee A. Hauck; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, He was preceded in death by a sister: Maxine Gehman.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, March 31, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at the Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata, followed by a graveside service at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 531 N. State St., Ephrata.

Joan M. Roether, 81, Joan’s Economy Shop owner, member of Ephrata Grace Church

Joan M. Roether, 81, of Ephrata, formerly of Lititz, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 20, 2018, at Fairmount Homes.

She was born in Ephrata to the late Harry H. and Mabel I. (Garman) Daugherty, and was the wife of Donald Roether, with whom she shared 64 years of marriage.

Joan was the owner and operator Joan’s Economy Shop for 32 years. She was also a member of the Ephrata Area Grace Brethren Church, now known as Grace Church.

In addition to her husband, Joan is survived by three children: Randy, husband of Faye Jonas of North Carolina; Linda, wife of Dan Fox of Lititz; and Louis, husband of Pat Dissinger of Wellsboro; and siblings: David and Ralph Daugherty, Donna Batz, and Janice Burkholder. In addition, she enjoyed five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services and visitation were held on Saturday, March 24 at Grace Church, Ephrata.

Evelyn E. Longenecker, 94, of Lititz, died peacefully March 27 at Luther Acres. In her earlier years, she helped her husband on the family farm in Penn Township. Evelyn was an Avon representative for over 50 years in the Lititz area. She was a member of Salem UMC, Manheim, where she taught Sunday school. Evelyn was a member of a bowling league for many years; and enjoyed snowmobiling with her husband, even in her eighties. A brother, Paul, husband of Fay Shirk, lives in Akron.

Cheryl A. Nash, 71, of Elizabethtown, passed away Feb. 9. A visitation will be held on Friday, April 6, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata. Gary L. Zong, 81, of Lititz, went home to be with his Lord March 31 at UPMC Pinnacle Lititz. Gary with his wife, Marilyn, were the founders, owners, and operators of the Toll Gate Inn, Lititz, from 1978 to 1998. Previously Gary was employed in construction for area builders, and operated Zong’s Barber Shop. For a number of years he also worked at Warner-Lambert. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He enjoyed golfing but had a deep passion for fishing, especially at Chincoteague, Va. A daughter, Tracy L., wife of William Martin, lives in East Earl.

John Henry Gerhart, 89, Lititz, Korean War veteran, Maier’s machinist, gunsmith, built three homes

John Henry Gerhart, 89, of Lititz, formerly of Adamstown, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at Landis Homes.

He was born in Knauers to the late John Elwood and Margie Lena (Glass) Gerhart.

He was a graduate of Mohnton High School class of 1946. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

In the early years John worked as a machinist at Berkshire Knitting Mills. He was then a maintenance engineer for Maier’s Bakery prior to his retirement in 1990.

He was a gunsmith and enjoyed shooting trap, hunting, and nature. He also enjoyed woodworking, having built three homes, and he loved country music.

John is survived by a daughter: Deborah, wife of John K. Gettle of Adamstown.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter: Leila K. Gerhart.

Services are private with interment in the Memory Gardens Memorial Cemetery.

Mildred I. Dietrich, 89, seamstress, enjoyed painting, ceramics, crafts and traveling

Mildred I. Dietrich, 89, of Lancaster, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, at Pleasant View Retirement Community, Manheim.

She was born in East Earl to the late Benjiman and Helen (Griffith) Weaver, and was the wife of the late Theodore Dietrich, who passed away in 1989.

Mildred was a seamstress. She enjoyed painting, ceramics, and doing crafts. She also liked to travel.

Mildred is survived by a son: Donald, husband of Judy Dietrich of Akron; a daughter: Bonnie, wife of Dennis Adair of Elizabethtown; three grandchildren: Matthew, husband of Deanna Adair of Elizabethtown; Michael, husband of Amanda Adair of Lebanon; Ashlee Dietrich of Akron; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother: Wilmer Griffith; and a sister: Blanche Weaver.

The family would like to acknowledge the special care given by the staff at Pleasant View Retirement Community in Meadows Living.

Services will be private the convenience of the family. Interment will take place in the Memory Gardens Memorial Cemetery.

Annie M. Wenger, 89, of Leola, passed away on Thursday morning, March 29, 2018, at her home.

Born in West Earl Township, she was the daughter of the late John Z and Susanna B. (Martin) Wenger.

She was a homemaker and a member of Groffdale Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference).

Annie was preceded in death by a brother: Aaron M.; and four sisters: Lizzie M., Lydia M., Emma M. and Susanna M. Wenger

Services were held April 2 at Groffdale Mennonite Church, Leola, with Bishop Ammon Weaver officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

David R. Leisey, 64, Denver, Rite-Aid documentation specialist, SF Giants and Cowboys fan

David R. Leisey, 64, of Denver, died on March 27, 2018, at Hershey Medical Center, after a long illness with congestive heart failure.

He was a graduate of Manheim Township High School. He lived in New Mexico and California and later came back to Pennsylvania where he worked for Rite-Aid for 16½ years as a documentation specialist. David loved the Giants baseball team and the Dallas Cowboys.

Born in the Ephrata Hospital, he was the son of Evelyn Leisey and the late Donald R. Leisey.

Surviving besides his mother are two brothers: Alan, husband of Connie Leisey of Manheim; and Philip, husband of Bonnie Leisey of Pittsburgh; and a sister: Theresa, wife of West Rowles of Maytown; and two nieces and two nephews.

Private services will be held by the family.

Josephine E. Wenrich, 74, Ephrata, was married 50 years to the love of her life

Josephine E. Wenrich, 74, of Ephrata, went to her final rest on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at The Gardens at Stevens.

Born in Ephrata on Feb. 18, 1944, she was the daughter of Irvin Firestone and Beda (Brubaker) Firestone. Josephine was married to the love of her life, Walter Wenrich, on Feb. 24, 1968. They just celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Josephine is preceded in death by her parents and six brothers. Surviving, are her husband: Walter; a sister: Pearl Firestone; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held April 3 at Blue Ball Church of the Brethren, Blue Ball, with Rev. Joel Hershey officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Paige Marie Montgomery, 47, Ephrata, chef, passionate gardener, avid fan of the Phillies and Redskins

Paige Marie Montgomery, 47, of Ephrata, passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2018, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was born in Lancaster, and was the wife of Robert Montgomery, with whom she shared 18 years, 10 of which they were married.

Paige was a chef. She had a passion for gardening and cooking and was an avid fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Redskins.

In addition to her husband and mother, Paige is survived by a brother: Shane Blankenmyer of Conestoga.

Bruce G. Hippensteel, 68, Horst Realty property manager, cared about people, environment

Bruce G. Hippensteel, 68, of Akron, passed away on Sunday, April 8, 2018, at Lancaster General Hospital.

He was born in Lancaster to the late James and Merian (Witmer) Hippensteel, and was the husband of Jennifer Hippensteel, with whom he shared 25 years of marriage learning and loving and growing together, no matter what life threw their way..

Bruce, a loving and caring husband and father, an old soul with a vibrant, intelligent mind with a strong desire to learn and grow. He strove daily to do the best thing for his body by eating healthy and exercising. You could often find Bruce at 68 years young doing pull-ups outside on a nearby tree branch or handstands in the back yard.

He believed and supported preserving the environment and was an advocate for human rights. Bruce’s mind was so very deep and full of information; his writings were powerful and taught all who read them. His children were the light in his eyes; he will never leave their sides. He loved to play guitar with his children and dance. He read every day and enriched his life and those around him.

He was a commercial property manager for most of his adult life and worked with Horst Realty in Lancaster. Bruce was the epitome of a successful man because he loved and was loved by many. His legacy will live on in his children and we will miss him every day. You are now truly the breeze, my sweet spirit and you will continue to shine on and your family will continue to make you proud every day.

In addition to his wife, Bruce is survived by sons: Derek and Noah; and daughters: Kiowa, Sage, and Maya; and three grandchildren: Max, Wyatt, and Ella; three sisters: Penny J. Knight, Ginny L. Byers, and Stacy L. Spaulding; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will take place April 14, from 2 to 5 p.m., at Reflections Restaurant, 1390 Oregon Road, Leola. Please join us in celebration of Bruce’s life.

Andy Zipfel, Army vet, OMPH member, won many sales awards, proud of his four sons

Andy Zipfel was beloved by his family. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 56 years: Helen; and his sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. Andy passed away unexpectedly on April 6, 2018.

Andy was born in Sheepshead Bay, N.Y., and admirably served his country in the U.S. Army. After he met Helen, they settled in Brooklyn, N.Y. After his sons, Andy (Annie) and Mike (Janice), were born, they moved to Staten Island, N.Y., where Pat and Tom (Sue) were born.

While visiting Ephrata on vacation, Andy decided to move his family there in 1977. Andy and Helen faithfully attended OMPH church, and they were incredibly proud of their four sons.

Andy’s professional career included working for a number of Fortune 500 companies and winning countless sales awards. His proudest moments, however, were being a father to his four sons and watching their families grow to include his 10 grandkids: Brendan, Casey, Shannon, Megan, Amber, Autumn, Maggie, Morgan, Owen, and Aidan. He will be remembered forever as the greatest and proudest Pop-Pop, who loved his family deeply and fiercely.

A prayer services was held April 9 at Gravenor Home for Funerals, Ephrata, officiated by his beloved brother-in-law, Rev. Patrick McGarrity, C.SS.R. A mass of Christian burial was held April 10 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Ephrata.

Geraldine A. Gelsinger, 78, Bachman Pretzels retiree, enjoyed traveling, live concerts

Geraldine Anne Gelsinger, 78, of Denver, passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2018, at Hospice & Community Care of Mount Joy.

Born in Ephrata, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Eleanor (Imhoff) Bouder.

She attended Ephrata High School and worked at F&M Hat Factory in Denver, Dutchmaid Sewing in Ephrata, and was retired from Bachman Pretzels in Reading.

She is survived by her husband, Lester W. Gelsinger, with whom she shared 61 years of marriage. Together they enjoyed years of traveling the country and enjoying the great outdoors. Much time was spent at the log cabin they built together in Clinton County, hunting, fishing, and snowmobiling.

Known as “Geri,” “Sister,” or “The Social Director,” she enjoyed spending time with her family, going to restaurants, playing cards, trips to Knoebels and Ocean City, Md.. She also enjoyed going to carnivals to watch live music.

Geri is survived by a daughter: Debra, wife of David Wenrich of Ephrata, and their extended family; brother: Gerald Bouder, husband of Margaret Neff, Lock Haven; sister: Sharon Ulrich, wife of David Ulrich, Ephrata; nephew: Brian Bouder of Stevens, and his son, JC; nephew: Davis Ulrich of Akron, and his two sons, Derrick and Devin.

Geri was recently preceded in death by a brother: Stanley Bouder.

A memorial service was held April 6 at at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver.

Earl M. Basehore, 94, WWII vet, retired building contractor, Swamp Lutheran member

Earl M. Basehore, 94, of Lancaster, formerly of Denver, passed away on Friday, April 6, 2018, at Elderwood Senior Living.

He was born in Hershey and was the husband of the late Marion C. (Collingwood) Basehore, who died in 2015.

Earl was a member of Swamp Lutheran Church, and the Rajah Shrine in Reading. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a retired building contractor.

Earl is survived by a son: Scott, husband of Cindy Basehore of Denver; a grandson: Brad, husband of Heather Basehore; three great-grandchildren: Mae, Elsie, and Annie Basehore; and a sister: Eva Swartz of Hershey.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son: Jerry Basehore.

Private services and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Edwin W. Hoover, 86, retired farmer, member of Springville Mennonite Church

Edwin W. Hoover, 86, of Ephrata, passed away on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at Lancaster General Hospital.

He was born in Clay Township to the Edwin Z. and Ella O. (Weaver) Hoover, and was the husband of the late Edith W. Hoover, who passed away in 2007.

A retired farmer, he was a member of Springville Mennonite Church (Weaverland Conference).

Edwin is survived by four children: Marian S., wife of Mervin Hoover of Pelham, Ga.; Arlene S. Hoover of Ephrata; Edwin S., husband of Esther (Huber) Hoover of Denver; Elaine S., wife of Eugene Garman of Schuylkill Haven; 15 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Emma W. Hoover, Esther W. Hoover, both of Denver; and a sister-in-law: Katie Z. (Horning) Hoover of Ephrata.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by seven siblings: Menno W. Hoover, Eli W. Hoover, Phares W. Hoover, Anna W. Hoover, Aaron W. Hoover, Mary W. Stauffer, Norman W. Hoover; four sisters-in-law: Lizzie N. Hoover, Mary N. Hoover, Frances N. Weaver, Erma G. (Wise) Hoover; a brother-in-law: Benjamin K. Stauffer; and a grandchild.

Services were held April 9 at Springville Mennonite Church, Ephrata, with Bishop Melvin H. Martin officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

Barbara L. Youndt, 83, Muddy Creek Lutheran lifer, EASS board member, Girl Scout leader

Barbara L. Youndt, 83, formerly of Reamstown and Fivepointville, entered into rest on Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Ephrata Manor.

The daughter of Mahlon and Dorothy (Fry) Leid, she was born at home on July 4, 1934, on Main Street in Reamstown.

On Dec. 9, 1950, she married James “Jim” Youndt. They were entrusted with seven children: Rebecca (Randal) Houser, Getha (Leon Douglas) Loose, Lessley (Sandi Belchick) Youndt, Allen (Carole Stahl) Youndt, Andrew (Kim Hess) Youndt, Phillip (Tina McCarty) Youndt, and Scott (Jennifer Lesagonicz) Youndt.

Jim preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 2016 after 66 years of a true and faithful marriage. They resided in their Fivepointville home for all 66 years. Barbara remained in their home until Sept. 9, 2017 then moved to Ephrata Manor.

Barbara was a dedicated member of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church from her birth until her death. She was a very active member, teaching Sunday school from Kindergarten through adult lecture classes, vacation bible school, choir member, and church council member.

She was also an active volunteer as a Girl Scout leader, food bank coordinator, and board member through Ephrata Area Social Services. She was also a devoted caregiver to many family members and friends. Her greatest joy was their large family: seven children, 16 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. The love shared at their annual family Christmas party was her greatest joy.

Barbara is also survived by two brothers: M. Kent (Kay Packer) Leid, and Craig F. (Jan Ficthorn) Leid.

She lived her life according to John 15:5: “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without me ye can do nothing.”

The funeral service will be Friday, April 13, at 11 a.m. at Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, 11 S Muddy Creek Road, Denver, with Pastor Peter Schwabe-Fry officiating. Interment will be in Muddy Creek Cemetery. A viewing will be held from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Ardel F. Garner, 80, active with DWC, accomplished seamstress, Superior Lingerie worker

Ardel Fay (Showalter) Garner, 80, of Denver, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2018.

Married for 62 years to her high school sweetheart, she was the loving wife of Allen P. Garner. Born in Reinholds, Ardel was a daughter of the late Harry and Elva (Lutz) Showalter.

She was a 1955 graduate of Denver High School. Ardel was an accomplished seamstress with the ability to sew anything from draperies to dresses including tailored equestrian riding jackets for her daughters. She worked at Superior Lingerie Company, Blue Ball, for over 30-years. Ardel began as a sewing machine operator and worked her way to costing and management positions.

She was a supportive and encouraging “horse show mom,” grandmother, and wife. She was a faithful member of Peace UCC, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and participated in the bell choir. She was a longtime active member of the Denver Women’s Club.

Ardel enjoyed walking, and playing cards and games with her friends and family. She loved spending time at her mountain home and warm winters in Florida for the past 12-years.

In addition to her husband of 62 years, Ardel is survived by three daughters: Vicki Garner-Sweigart, wife of Carl of Reinholds; Kathy G. Wilson, wife of Kenneth of Honeybrook; and Heidi G. Ulrich, wife of Chad, of Denver; a granddaughter: Kelsey E. Gray, wife of Michael; and a grandson: Tyler Ulrich; three great-grandchildren: Ava, Waylon, and Lane; three step-grandchildren: Kenny Wilson, Julie Wilson, and Beth Drupp; and two sisters: a twin, Mardel Lausch; and Janice Kohl.

Services were held April 7 at Peace UCC, Denver.Interment was in the Fairview Cemetery Annex, Denver.

Cheri Sue Becker, 47, of Lancaster, passed away on Sunday, April 1, 2018, at Hershey Medical Center.

She was born in Ephrata to the late Lee Eberly and Elsie (Fasnacht) Towers, companion of Ridgely Rabold of Ephrata.

Cheri was a deli clerk for Weis Market. She was of Lutheran Faith and enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. Cheri lived in Lancaster City the past seven years and always talked about how much she missed the country living.

In addition to her mother, Cheri is survived by two sons: Mason Becker of Ephrata, Hunter Latshaw of Denver; three brothers: Troy, husband of Beth (Shirker) Eberly of Denver; Travis, husband Monica (Sweigart) Eberly of Lititz; Curt, husband of Tracey (Deitrich) Eberly of Denver; and her companion: George Magaro Jr., of Lancaster.

Nathan Bertozzi Lausch, 44, Denver native, worked at Gulfstream Aerospace, genealogist

Nathan Bertozzi Lausch, 44, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., was called home by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Feb. 8, 2018, after a year of battling melanoma.

The son of H. Nevin and Angelina Bertozzi Lausch, Nathan was born on Feb. 5, 1974 in Ephrata. He grew up on Windy Hollow Farm, Windy Mansion Road, Denver.

He graduated from Lancaster Christian School in 1992, and received a BA degree in 1996 from The Citadel Military College, Charleston, S.C. Following graduation, Nathan moved to Indianapolis, Ind. where he worked in construction, and after moving to Chicago, served two years with Inner City Impact. Since 2012, he was employed by Gulfstream Aerospace as a supplier development and improvement supervisor. Nathan greatly enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and internationally, both Europe and the Middle East, as part of his work assignments.

A kind, caring, intelligent man, Nathan had a wonderful sense of humor and a contagious laugh. He loved outdoor activities, and following in the footsteps of his father and paternal grandfather, enjoyed hunting. Among his many and varied hobbies were photography and cooking; and he developed a keen interest in genealogy, especially that of his Lausch family, whose ancestor, Heinrich Lausch, emigrated to Lancaster County in the 1700s.

Beside his parents, who reside in Cicero, Ind.; Nathan is survived by his brother H. Stephen and sister-in-law Andrea Lausch of Westfield, Ind.; his sister: Erin and brother-in-law Stéphane Renault De Haas of Tremoli, Italy; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. Nathen was an adored and doting uncle to Matthew and Noah Lausch and Philoméne, Gwendolyn and Tobias Renault De Haas.

Nate, as he was known to family and friends, will be dearly missed by all.

He was predeceased by his grandparents: H. Martin and Naomi Lausch of Ephrata; and Walter and Catherina Bertozzi of Denver.

A memorial service for Nathan was held in the Summerall Chapel at The Citadel Military College on March 9 for friends in the Charleston, S.C. and Savannah, Ga. areas. The family will have a private burial service at a later date.

Kathryn Musser Croft, Pancake Farm waitress, Girl Scout leader, family was her greatest joy

Kathryn Musser Croft entered into the kingdom of heaven on Thursday April 5, 2018.

Kay was born in Ephrata to the late Dorothy Buohl Musser.

For the past 55 years, she lived five doors from where she was born. She was a waitress for 59 years, 30 of those at the Pancake Farm in Ephrata. She was a member of Bethany UCC, and taught Sunday school for many years. Kay was also a Junior Girl Scouts leader in Ephrata.

Kay’s greatest joy was her children and family. She is survived by her children: Rick, married to Melissa Heming; Wendy, married to Michael Dickersheid; and Robert, companion of Robin Quiggle; 10 grandchildren: Shanna Croft, Abbie Dickersheid Faircloth, Dylan Croft, Derek Coy, Amber Coy, Nathan Franklin, Alexis Franklin, Christy Becker, Katie Singleton, and Kari Malmer; four great-grandchildren: Janessa Morales, Darian Rodriguez, Brailyn Brumbach, and Kyla Croft; a brother: Larry Musser; three sisters: Janet Martin, Doris Kuhn, Donna Bowman; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and two nephews.

“Do not mourn my death; but instead celebrate my life, because I loved my life.”

Services were held April 9 at Ephrata Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Rob Eshelman officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
