David L. Tibbetts, 77, contractor, Wild Bill’s Foods retiree, avid reader, woodworker

David L. Tibbetts, 77, of Brownstown, formerly of Loudon, Epsom, and Concord, N.H., went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday evening, Nov. 17, 2017, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Loudon, N.H., he was the son of the late S. Lester and Gladys E. Nickerson Tibbetts. He was the husband of Deanna L. Cass Tibbetts for 55 years on May 12.

David was a member of Lancaster Alliance Church where he taught Sunday school, served as an elder, and was involved in the prison ministry and men’s Bible study. Prior to retiring in 2008, he was employed by Wild Bill’s Foods for 14 years. Previously, he was a self-employed contractor and owner of Dave’s Building and Remodeling. In addition to being an avid reader, David enjoyed woodworking and created personal treasures for each of his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: Roxanne L., wife of Chris Young, of East Petersburg; Robin E., wife of Rev. Glenn Deane, of Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada; and Rhonda L., wife of Bruce Penner, of Roanoke, Va.; seven grandchildren: Lindsey Young; Bethany Young; Aaron, husband of Brynne Young; Nathan, husband of Taralee Deane; Kevin Deane; Chad Penner; and Kayla Penner; four great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Elaine, wife of Michael Perreault, of Mt. Dora, Fla.; Roberta Maxfield of Pittsfield, N.H.; and Gail, wife of Kenneth Rostrom, of Barrington, R.I.

He was also preceded in death by two siblings: Neal Tibbetts and Priscilla Paul.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 24, at 4 p.m., at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster. There will be no public viewing. Private interment will be in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville. The family will receive guests at the church on Friday afternoon from 3 p.m. until the time of the service. All are invited to a luncheon in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service.

Helen I. Sweigart, 94, EHS grad, Dutchmaid retiree, lifelong Democrat, enjoyed antiquing

Helen I. Sweigart, 94, of Ephrata, departed this life at home on Wednesday, Nov.15, 2017.

She was the wife of the late Richard E. Sweigart, former Ephrata postmaster, who passed away on Oct. 20, 1979, and the daughter of the late Paul and Helen (Bechtel) Mohn.

Helen was born in Ephrata on Dec. 25, 1922, and was a lifelong resident. She graduated from Ephrata High School with the class of 1941, and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ephrata. She worked for Dutchmaid, Inc. for 15 years, retiring in 1983.

Helen was an avid antique collector and up until her late 80s she could often be found at Renningers or the Black Angus Antique Mall on a Sunday afternoon looking for a piece of spatter, Gaudy Dutch or Leed’s china to add to her collection. Her other hobbies included counted cross stitch and needlework, and she made dozens of fine pieces over the years. She also enjoyed working out in the yard up until health issues began to limit those activities. She was an ardent follower of politics, a lifelong Democrat, and supported many Democratic and environmental causes.

Helen is the last of her immediate family and is survived by her son: Daniel S. Sweigart of Ephrata; a niece: Gloria Bell of San Francisco, Calif.; a nephew: Dennis Zimmerman of Reading; and a number of grand-nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a son: Thomas; her parents: Paul and Helen (Bechtel) Mohn; sisters: Betty Reber, Mary Seibel Mull, and Jane Zimmerman; and a brother: Charles Mohn.

Services were held Nov. 20 at Gravenor Home for Funerals, Ephrata, with Pastor Douglas Gehr and Chaplain Nilda Roman officiating. Interment was in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Ephrata.

Anna Mae Hirneisen, 86, E. Cocalico grad, Moyer/Gerber worker, Swamp Christian member

Anna Mae Hirneisen, 86, of Ephrata, formerly of Denver, went to be with the Lord and those who have gone before, on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, at Ephrata Manor.

She was born in East Cocalico Township to the late Harry and Sally (Nagle) Hirneisen.

Anna was a member of Swamp Christian Fellowship Church. She was a sewing machine operator for Moyer/Gerber. She was a graduate East Cocalico High School.

Anna is survived by a sister: Mabel Hirneisen of Ephrata; and six nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Emory and Paul Hirneisen; two sisters: Flora Hirneisen and Dora Hornberger; one nephew; and one niece.

A graveside service was held Nov. 18 at Swamp Cemetery, Reinholds, with Pastor Craig Frazier officiating.

R. Donald Hackman, 91, WWII vet, worked at Big Rig, LNP, enjoyed dining out, Phillies fan

R. Donald Hackman, 91, of Ephrata, passed away peacefully with family by his side on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, at the Ephrata Manor, where he had resided for the past five years.

He was the husband of Clara (Peachey) Hackman, who passed away in October 2012. Born in Ephrata on Feb. 4, 1926, he was the son of the late John and Irene (Zwally) Hackman.

After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Donald owned and operated a trucking company for many years. He then was a distributor for the Lancaster Newspapers in the Ephrata area before working at Big Rig in Ephrata. In his retirement years, he delivered parts for CarQuest. He enjoyed watching football and baseball, especially the Phillies. He also loved going out to eat with the family.

He is survived by four sons: Barry, husband of Dolores of Oley; Scott, husband of Carole of Ephrata; Kim, husband of Deb of Leola; and Jim, husband of Kim, of Ephrata; one daughter: Dawn Spencer, wife of Roger of New Holland; a daughter-in-law: Gina, wife of his late son, Doug of Ephrata; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Clara; his son: Doug; and his four older sisters: Kathryn Erisman, Verna Fritz, Mildred Kilhefner, and Annabelle Leisey.

A memorial service was held Nov. 20 at Donecker Chapel at Ephrata Manor. A private interment, at the convenience of the family, will be held at Middle Creek Church of the Brethren, with military honors accorded by the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard.

The family would like to sincerely thank the staff at Ephrata Manor for their care, comfort, and the love they showed to their father and grandfather during his stay there.

Edith Roberts Jameson, 94, WWII cryptographer, avid outdoorswoman, enjoyed fine dining

Edith Roberts Jameson, 94, of Manheim, formerly of Akron, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2017, at her residence.

She was born Oct. 16, 1923, in Philadelphia, daughter of the late Francis MacCulloch Roberts Jr, and Helen Johnson (Roberts) Salmon. She was the loving wife of the late E. Carleton Jameson Jr. MD, who she had been married to for 51 years.

Edith was a graduate of Germantown High School (Philadelphia), and attended Temple University (Philadelphia), and Beaver College (now Arcadia University, Glenside).

During World War II, she served in the United States Naval Reserve (Women’s Reserve, WAVES) as a Specialist (Communications) 3rd Class. She was a cryptographer stationed in Washington, D.C. During her lifetime, she was an avid outdoorswoman, enjoyed finishing woodworking projects that her husband had made, and was particularly fond of dining out at fine restaurants.

She is survived by two sons: Dr. Donald L. Jameson of Gettysburg; and E. Carleton Jameson III, married to Pamela C., of Ambler; and five grandchildren: Matthew, Nikolas, Anastasia, Michael, and Madison. She was the beloved half-sister of Anthony W. Salmon Jr. and the late Anne Salmon Laub.

Services and interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Military honors will be accorded by the Red Rose Honor Guard.

Mary Grace Youtz, 70, EHS grad, clerk for PSERS, enjoyed bingo, going out to eat

Mary Grace Youtz, 70, of Annville, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017, at The Gardens of Campbelltown.

She was the wife of the late Ronald D. Youtz, who passed away in 2014. Mary was born in Ephrata on March 28, 1947, to the late Paul D. and Grace H. (Rock) Shenk.

She was a 1965 graduate of Ephrata High School. Mary was a clerk for PSERS, the Public School Employee’s Retirement System. She had attended Lebanon Valley Bible Church and The Bridge Church. She enjoyed playing bingo, going out to eat and spending time with her family.

Mary is survived by her children: Angela and her husband Scott Nye of Annville; Richard D. Youtz and his wife Gretchen of Annville; Keith R. Youtz and his wife Holly of Palmyra; grandchildren: Brittany Nye, Harlie Youtz, Calliope Youtz.

She was preceded in death by her grandson: Dylan; and her brothers: David Shenk and Dale P. Shenk.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m. from Kreamer Funeral Home and Crematory, 618 E. Main St., Annville. Interment will follow at Gravel Hill Cemetery, Palmyra. There will be a viewing held from 10 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

James R. Knoll, 97, EHS grad, owned J & E Rental Center, passionate amateur mycologist

James R. Knoll died on Nov. 6, 2017, at 97 years of age at the Willow Valley Retirement Community, Lancaster, where he and his wife Elsie (Weber) Knoll resided for the past 22 years.

Born in Wernersville, his family moved to Akron when Jim was four. He graduated from Ephrata High School and earned his bachelor of science from Penn State University in 1942. He first worked for Shell Oil in Aruba, and later for Research Cottrell, a pollution control company based in New Jersey. Jim then moved his family to Wernersville and began his own business, owning and operating coin-operated laundromats. He later established J & E Rental Center in Ephrata, where he and Elsie lived for 18 years.

Jim was a passionate amateur mycologist who was instrumental in founding the Eastern Penn Mushroomers. He also loved to garden.

Jim is survived by his wife: Elsie; his two daughters: Suzanne Powell and Bonnie Richardson; his grandchildren: Elizabeth and Eric Powell; and his great-grandchild: Kolton Powell.

Betty J. Lausch Buch, 89, Walter W. Moyer worker, enjoyed public sales, gardening

Betty J. (Martin) Lausch Buch, 89, of Clay Township, Mount Airy, passed away on Nov. 21, 2017, at Keystone Villa, Ephrata.

Betty was born in Warwick Township to Harry W. Martin and Adelia Martin on June 8, 1928.

Betty worked in production at the RCA plant in Lancaster for 15 years, and in garment manufacturing at Walter W. Moyer of Ephrata for 20. She volunteered with Durlach-Mount Airy Fire Company.

She loved public sales, eating at Bright’s Restaurant, and raising vegetables and flowers, which she would give away to friends and acquaintances. She was a member of Hopeland United Methodist and a lifelong member of Mount Airy Union Sunday School where she taught for many years.

Preceding Betty in death were her parents; and two husbands: Carl Wilbur Lausch and Clyedth Buch.

Surviving Betty are three sons: Michael C. Lausch of Newmanstown; Douglas N. Lausch, husband of Denise (Page), of Ephrata; and Timothy E. Lausch, husband of Frances A. (Marshall), of Mount Airy; two granddaughters: Whitney M., wife of Jesse Hilsher of Elizabethtown; and Megan Lausch, of Mount Airy; one grandson: Jonathan C. Lausch of Mount Airy; and one step-grandson: Clinton Sweigert, husband of Jenn, of Bethel. Also surviving are siblings: Benjamin Martin of Ephrata; Jim Shenenberger, husband of Betty, of Akron; and Shirley, wife of Donald Mellinger of Ephrata.

Funeral services were held Nov. 27 at Hopeland United Methodist Church, Lititz, with Rev. Jody B. Sambrick officiating. Interment followed at Middle Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery.

Terry Lee Mountz, 58, Terre Hill

Terry Lee Mountz, 58, died at his home in Terre Hill on Nov. 22, 2017.

Terry is survived by his wife of 41 years: Ginni (Virginia Petersheim); and three children: Jonathan; Jason, married to Angie (Redcay); and Susan Mertz.

Terry was the son of Ralph and Nancy Mountz; and brother to: Tammy Cook; and Tim Mountz, married to Amy (Bloom). Terry and Ginni have six beloved grandchildren: Draven, Olivia, Gavin, Zephen, Hope, and Isabelle.

A memorial service was held Nov. 29 at Bethany Grace Fellowship, East Earl.

Leon S. Eshleman, EHS. grad, barber, kitchen cabinet specialist, fervent outdoorsman

Leon S. Eshleman of Houston, Texas, concluded his earthly journey on Nov. 26, 2017, at home with his wife, Nancy, by his side and under the care of Hospice.

Until Leon became sick with cancer in 2014 he was a lifelong resident of the Denver area.

He was born Nov. 8, 1940, at Ephrata Community Hospital to Jacob Daniel Eshleman and Lola Virginia Eckhart Eshleman.

Leon graduated from Ephrata High School in 1958. He then graduated from Barber School in Harrisburg in 1959 and cut hair for 13 years at Keller’s Barber Shop in Denver. Leon also worked for Drumm Landscaping for a few years between jobs. Leon retired from Wickes Lumber in February 2003 after 32 years as a kitchen cabinet specialist.

He was active with Denver Boy Scout Troop 32 for 33 years and attended Ephrata Church of Nazarene.

Leon’s life passion was enjoying the great outdoors, he hunted and fished with his dad since he was old enough to be carried across the creeks. Every year of his childhood, his parents would take the entire family to Canada for a summer fishing trip. Leon loved fishing for trout in the Seglock. Salt water fishing at the Chesapeake Bay was also a fond childhood memory. Leon hunted for deer, bear, and turkey at Spike Ridge Lodge in Potter County. He hunted with his sons and grandsons in West Virginia, and enjoyed Salmon fishing on Lake Ontario.

Leon also enjoyed traveling with his wife, Nancy and together they had seen all but three of the United States. He has traveled to Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, and Honduras, Leon also enjoyed six cruises with Nancy.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Leon is survived by his wife of 34 years: Nancy Goddard Eshleman, Houston Texas. In addition Leon is survived by brother: Jay Eshleman and wife Phyllis of Lititz; son: Randy Eshleman and his wife Denise of Denver; daughter: LeeAnn DeHass of Wharton Texas; daughter: Yvonne Gutierrez of Houston Texas; son: Tyrone DeHass and wife Kathy of Trinity Texas; son: Nelson DeHass of Houston Texas; 15 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.

Esther F. White, 90, mother of six, Harting’s Bakery worker, prolific crocheter with green thumb

Esther F. White, 90, of Denver, went to meet her heavenly father on Saturday, Nov. 25, 2017.

She was born June 21, 1927, in Ephrata Township, to the late Stephen and Sallie (Frederick) Hertzog. She was the youngest of 11 children. Esther married the late Norman E. White on July 20, 1946. They were married for over 52 years.

She was the mother of six children: Janet, wife of Robert Orth of Ephrata; Jean, wife of Ronald Risser of Denver; the late James, husband of Heidi (Haller) White of Ephrata; Joan, wife of Curtis Unruh of Denver; Jane, wife of the late Barry Hoshour of Bowmansville; and Judy, wife of Paul Dubiansky of Apex, N.C. She the was the grandmother of Thomas and Norman Karol; Stephen, Anthony, and Christopher Risser; James and John White; Katie (Unruh) Vang and Ryan Unruh; Michael and Molly Hoshour; and Katherina, Aaron, and Sonia Dubiansky. She is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandson; two great-great-grandchildren; and three step-great-great-grandchildren.

Esther enjoyed crocheting. She crocheted hundreds of afghans, prayer shawls, and doilies, most of which were given away. She also loved to read and do seek-a-word books, listening to gospel music and going to gospel concerts. She was a member of Akron Church of the Brethren for over 60 years, there she sewed many quilts with the quilting group “The Ugly Quilters.” She enjoyed the Brickerville Leisure Hours group, day trips, and visiting friends. Esther loved to drive and go shopping.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling to Florida. She had the time of her life when she went on her first cruise in 2002. She sent out hundreds of greeting cards as the sunshine lady in her Sunday school class. She also taught children’s Sunday school for a number of years.

Esther had a green thumb. Many a plant came back to life under her care. She loved watching her elephant ear plants grow to huge sizes in the summer. She made delicious corn pies, applesauce, crab cakes, and ham and string beans.

Esther was a hard worker. She was employed by several different sewing factories in the Ephrata area, including Dutchmaid and Atlas. After moving to Bowmansville in 1973, she worked at Harting’s Bakery for about 15 years. Esther and Norman lived in several houses that Norman built himself. The last one they lived in was near Bowmansville where many holiday get-togethers were held.

Esther rarely missed anyone’s birthday or anniversary. She loved her children, grandchildren, in-laws, nieces ,and nephews tremendously.

In addition to her husband Norman, who passed in 1990, Esther was predeceased by 10 brothers and sisters: Paul, Raymond, Stella, Elmer, Henry, Fred, Sadie, Levi, Mabel, and Grace; a son: James; and a son-in-law: Barry.

The family would like to thank hospice and the staff at Ephrata Manor for their kind and compassionate care.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at the Akron Church of the Brethren, 613 Main St., Akron, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m., with Pastor Tom Weber officiating. Interment will take place in the Middle Creek Cemetery.

Dennis L. ‘Sarge’ Gehr, 70, EHS grad, Air Force audiovisual media tech, outdoorsman, John Wayne fan

MSgt. Dennis L. “Sarge” Gehr, USAF Ret., 70, of Ephrata, passed away Friday, Nov. 24, 2017, at home after a brief illness.

Dennis was born in Lancaster on Aug. 26, 1947, to the late William Miller Gehr and Ann Smith Rote.

He graduated from Ephrata High School in 1965 and was a career military service member having served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force for over 20 years. He was a crew member aboard the U.S.S. Forrestal from 1966 to 1968. He mostly worked as an audiovisual media technician with the Air Force Orientation Group. After having served his country for over 20 years, he was employed with Berk Tech, Industries for 20 years.

He was a member of the Ephrata VFW, AmVets, and American Legion; the Reamstown and Newmanstown Athletic Associations; and Camp Sequoia in Juniata County. He was also an alumnus of AFOG. A movie lover, Dennis was especially a fan of John Wayne. He also loved Christmas time, woodworking, camping and fishing.

Dennis is survived by his daughter: Deneen Wolfe, wife of Jason Wolfe of Scott City, Kansas; five grandchildren: Cole Gerlach; Camren, Christian, Anthony, and Celeste Wolfe; and six siblings: Sharon, Katheran, Jackie, and Barry Gehr; and Nathan and Jared Levitan; and a number of aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Dennis was preceded in death by his son: William Michael Gehr; foster mother: Luella McElhenney; sister: Shirley Gehr; and a brother: Ronald Levitan.

Friends will be received at Gravenor Home for Funerals, 100 W. Main St., Ephrata, on Friday, Dec. 1, from 11 a.m. to noon. Funeral services, officiated by Barry Gehr, will begin at noon and will be followed by interment with full military honors at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Tyler Carl Wright, 26, of East Earl, passed away Thursday, Nov. 23, 2017 at Lancaster General Hospital.

He was born in Lancaster on Oct. 23, 1991, and was the son of Douglas Paul Wright and Becky (Deese) Wright.

Tyler grew up in East Earl, and was a member of St. John’s Center United Church of Christ. He was a player for the Challenger Little League Baseball program for 19 years, and spent his days at Excentia Adult Day Program with friends. He enjoyed going to the family cabin, where he loved to fish, swim, and watch the wildlife from the deck. He loved traveling, spending time with family and friends, and most of all, gave great hugs and kisses to everyone he met.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sisters: Samantha Wright and her fiancé, Zachary Metzler, of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; and Shelby Wright of East Earl; and paternal grandfather: J. Carl Wright of Blue Ball.

Preceding him in death are his fraternal grandparents: Norman and Mary Jo Deese; and his paternal grandmother: Shirley Wright.

A memorial service was held Nov. 25 at St. John’s Center UCC, East Earl, with the Reverend R. Kenneth Evitts and the Reverend Bradley Haws officiating.

Samuel W. Spangler, 22, of Brownstown, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2017, at Lancaster General Hospital after losing his battle with addiction.

Born in Lancaster on Oct. 18, 1995, he was the son of Lisa C. (Russo) Spangler and Stephen C. Spangler.

Sam was a 2014 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School where he played soccer and baseball and a 2016 graduate of Thaddeus Stevens School of Technology. He was currently working at Oregon Dairy. He was a hard worker who took great pride in everything he did, especially lawn work. While growing up he attended Forest Hills Mennonite Church in Leola with his family.

Sam loved golfing, watching movies and sports, especially the Carolina Panthers. He loved spending time with his family and his cat, Ollie. He will fondly be remembered for his sense of humor, his selflessness, and easy-going personality. Sam was well mannered and helpful to everyone. He was his parents’ bright shining star.

Surviving in addition to his parents is a brother: Luke S. Spangler; a sister: Olivia C. Spangler; maternal grandparents: Barbara M. Russo and William J. Russo Jr.; uncle: Doug Spangler and his wife Pat; uncles: Bill and Michael Russo; cousin: Jason Neher and his wife Luisa; cousin: Laura Rowland and her husband Matt; cousins: Joanna, Billy, Lucy, and Maria Russo; and the love of his life: Christine Buckwalter.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents: Samuel P. and Doris M. Spangler.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Jane S. Schweitzer, 95, Adamstown Elementary cook, Women’s Club charter member

Jane S. Schweitzer, 95, of Stevens, formerly of Adamstown, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, at Gardens at Stevens Nursing Home.

She was born in Ephrata to the late Paul and Margaret (Becker) Stirk, and was the wife of the late John C. Schweitzer, who died in 2004.

She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Swartzville, where she was a member of the choir for over 50 years. She was a charter member and past president of Adamstown Women’s Club. Jane had worked at Mom’s Diner for 13 years, and was a cook at Adamstown Elementary School.

Jane is survived by a son: Phillip (Donna) Schweitzer of West Lawn; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and two daughters-in-law: Dixie Schweitzer and Shirley Schweitzer.

She was preceded in death by her husband: John C. Schweitzer; two sons: Randy and Jeff Schweitzer; four sisters: Mary Bowers, Francis Faust, Pauline Bowers, and Nancy Orth; and a brother: Isaac Stirk.

A memorial service was held Dec. 4 at Peace United Church of Christ, Denver, with Pastor William E. Hoch officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Deaths of Local Interest – Dec. 6, 2017

Arlene K. Charles, 87, of Fairmont Homes, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving nieces and nephews on Nov. 29. Arlene served for many years as an aide at Landis Homes and Mennonite Home before retiring and would then volunteer at the Columbia Re-Uzit Shop. She was known to be very hospitable and enjoyed cooking for guests that would visit. Arlene was a longtime member of Blue Rock Mennonite Church.

Donald E. “Don” Dunkelberger, 59, of Lancaster, passed away Nov. 28 at Lancaster General Hospital. He worked at R.R. Donnelley for 16 years, and drove truck for Granite Transportation in York. Don enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, listening to music, dancing and going to the shore and helping others. He was caring and loving to his best friends, Brindle and Bella. His dogs meant so much to him. A son, Scott E. Dunkelberger (Devyn), lives in Stevens.

Michael S. Slusser, 59, of New Providence, passed away Dec. 2. He was employed for 37 years by Exelon, working at Peach Bottom Nuclear Plant. He was an avid boater, and enjoyed spending time with his family fishing in Ocean City, Md. Michael also enjoyed hunting, and had been a member of the Lancaster Archery Club. Spending time with his three grandsons was very important to him. His daughter, Liz (Eric) Ackerman, lives in Ephrata.

Mary Jane Walschburger, 87, of Lancaster, formerly of Reading, passed away Nov. 28. She was a member of the Reading Liederkranz where she was involved in the G.T.V. Edelweiss Schuhplattlers dance group for many years. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mary enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren who affectionately knew her as “Oma.” She is survived by a daughter, Susan Marie Getz, wife of Troy, of Ephrata.

Chester Musser, 85, former Ephrata resident, auto mechanic, kind and compassionate

Chester G. Musser, 85, passed away on Nov. 20, 2017, in Dade City, Fla.

Chester is survived by his daughters: Beverly and Sandra; his granddaughters: Stephani and Carina; and his great-grandchildren: Aidan and Neala.

His is preceded in death by his wife: Dorothy.

Chester was born Nov. 23, 1931, in Lancaster, to parents Jacob and Anna Mary Musser.

Chester and Dorothy were married in Ephrata, in 1951 and lived there for several years, moving to Lebanon and then returning to care for her parents. Later, he worked as an auto mechanic in Dade City, Fla., where he retired in 1999.

Chester was an independent, active, and social man who loved traveling, the great outdoors, and his children’s and grandchildren’s homecooked meals. His family and friends will always remember him as a very kind, considerate, and compassionate man, and he will be greatly missed.

Dorothy Mae Bitting, 99, homemaker, enjoyed cooking for others, devoted to her family

Dorothy Mae Bitting, 99, of Keystone, Villa, Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy.

She was born in Allentown to the late William and Goldie Mae (Miller) Snyder, and was the wife of the late R. John Bitting.

Dorothy was a homemaker. She enjoyed keeping a spotless house and cooking for others. She was devoted to her family, particularly her granddaughters

Dorothy is survived by a daughter: Jane, wife of Joseph Higdon of Ephrata; three granddaughters: Christina Fletcher, Colleen Greenberg, Caroline Higdon; and four great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son: John David Bitting.

Milton N. Sensenig, 76, construction worker, Pequea Mennonite member, very friendly

Milton N. Sensenig, 76, of 123 Martindale Road, Ephrata, passed away Monday, Nov. 27, 2017, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

Born in Gordonville, Leacock Township, he was a son of the late John and Mary (Nolt) Sensenig, and was the husband of the late Susan W. (Brubaker) Sensenig.

He was a member of Pequea Mennonite Church.

Milton was in construction most of his life. He enjoyed talking with people and was friendly to everyone he met.

Milton is survived by six children: Mary Sue (Sensenig), married to Carl N. Martin of New York; Ruth Ann Sensenig at home; John C., married to Angela (Lapp) Sensenig of Ephrata; Leon D., married to Mary Esther (Hoover) Sensenig of Newmanstown; Esther Mae (Sensenig), married to Joel Martin of Lititz; Jason L., married to Kristy (Landers) Sensenig of Stevens; 18 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Noah N., husband of Esther (Weaver) Sensenig of Quarryville; John N., husband of Pauline (Weaver) Sensenig of Nottingham; Melvin N., husband of Pheobe Ann (Wenger) Sensenig of East Earl; seven sisters: Anna, wife of Titus W. Burkholder of Gordonville; Barbara, wife of the late Paul Hursh of Lititz; Ruth, wife of the late Paul Hoover of Myerstown; Frances, wife of Harlan Martin of New Holland; Evelyn Snyder of Ephrata; Verna, wife of Leon Burkholder of Ephrata; Esther, wife of Lloyd Fox of East Earl; and two brothers-in-law: Harlan Weaver of Manheim, Ellis Martin of Lititz.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Mary Etta Weaver, Erma Martin; a brother: David Sensenig; and a sister-in-law: Betty L. (Moyer) Sensenig.

Services were held Dec. 4 at Pequea Mennonite Church, New Holland, with Bishop Curvin Zimmerman officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

Melrose J. Salmons, 82, Leggett’s retiree, ‘General Hospital’ fan, devoted to her family, native of area

Melrose J. Salmons of Harrington, Del., passed away at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2017. She was 82 years old.

She was the daughter of the late, Raymond and Helen Moyer.

Melrose retired from Leggett’s Department Store after more than 20 years. She then started waitressing at various local restaurants, most recently for the Stargate Restaurant in Harrington, where she was best known as Mama. She was a hard worker, with a heart of gold, who would do anything for anybody. She was also straightforward and not afraid to give her opinion on matters. Melrose was deeply devoted to her family, especially her grandkids and great-grandkids.

When she wasn’t working she attended church at Calvary Wesleyan in Harrington. She also liked to travel to Pennsylvania to the small town in Cocalico that she was proud to have grown up in, and never missed an episode of General Hospital.

In addition to her parents, Melrose was preceded in death by her husband: D. Robert Salmons; and her brother: Richard A. “Popeye” Moyer.

She is survived by her daughter: Deborah J. (J. William Jr.) Moffett; son: Robert (Stacey Buck) Salmons; grandchildren: Melanie (Rob) Rosser, David Moffett, Wm R. (Molly Dobos) Moffett, Ashley (Brian) Paris, and Bobby Salmons; great-grandchildren: Taylor, Robbie, Cole, Lily, Caje, Elly, Trey, Kara, Ryan, Calliegh, and Gabriel; nieces: Dana (Norman) Barlow, Becky Robbins; and great-nieces and nephew: Rylee, Dalayna, Brooke, Michael, and Marah.

Funeral services took place at the Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington, Del., on Dec. 6. Interment was at Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington.
