Aaron Glenn Bowman, 65, drywall finisher, enjoyed fishing, hunting, line dancing and antiquing

Aaron Glenn Bowman, 65, of Ephrata, passed away Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017, at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

He was born in Bowmansville to the late Aaron and Arlene (Leisey) Bowman, and was the husband of Carlyn (Gross) Bowman, with whom he shared 27 years of marriage.

He had been a member of New Beginnings Church in Ephrata. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, line dancing, antiquing, and walking. Glenn had worked as a drywall finisher for many years prior to retiring.

In addition to his wife, Glenn is survived by two daughters: Misty Bowman of Savannah, Ga.; and Jessica Morris of Philadelphia; two grandchildren: Katie Anne and Joanna Joy Bowman; and a brother: Garry Bowman of Fivepointville.

He was preceded in death by a son: Bryan Bowman; and two brothers: Nevin and Ronald Bowman.

A viewing will be held on Friday, Aug. 18, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor Joe Hyatt officiating. Interment will take place in the Denver Union Cemetery.

Minnie M. Reiff, 70, formerly of East Earl, Reidenbach Mennonite Church member

Minnie M. Reiff, 70, of Narvon, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2017, at the residence of a relative.

Born in East Earl Township, she was a daughter of the late Aaron B. and Mary M. (Martin) Reiff.

Minnie was a member of Reidenbach Mennonite Church.

Minnie is survived by nine siblings: Jonas M. Reiff (Mary Nolt) of Fortune, Mo.; Rufus M. Reiff (Anna Mary Snyder) of East Earl; Noah M. Reiff (Kathleen Galligan) of Stevens; Christian M. Reiff (Susie Martin) of East Earl; Martha M. Hoover (Ammon) of Narvon; Clarence M. Reiff (Susie Hoover) of East Earl; Esther M. Hoover (James) of Ephrata; Ivan M. Reiff (Ida Hurst) of Narvon; and Henry M. Reiff (Lois Martin) of East Earl.

In addition to her parents, Minnie was preceded in death by five siblings: Lydia M. Hoover, Aaron M. Reiff, Martin M. Reiff, Mary M. Martin, and Andrew M. Reiff.

Minnie’s funeral was held Aug. 14, at Reidenbach Mennonite Church, with Bishop Noah Martin officiating. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

John Landis Risser, 89, of Lancaster, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Friday, Aug. 11, 2017, at Reading Health System.

He was born in Lancaster to the late David and Luella (Landis) Risser, and was the husband of the late Florence (Hammer) Risser, who passed away in 2013.

John was an electrician for Earl Stauffer & Sons Electrical, Ephrata.

John is survived by three sisters: Mary Jane, wife of Perry Scott, of Lancaster; Jean Ditzler of Coudersport; June Smith of Lancaster; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Dorothy L. Blessing, 88, of Ephrata, passed away on Aug. 10, 2017, from a brief illness at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late John R. and Cecelia E. (Judith) Wimer. Dorothy was the wife to the late Walter B. Blessing, who died June 2006.

She retired from JL Clark with 42 years of service. She enjoyed going to the beach at Ocean City, Maryland, doing puzzle books, and spending time with her family. Dorothy was also an avid reader and Phillies fan.

Surviving are daughters: Cheryl A. Blessing, Jean (Al) Hartman; and Nancy L. Wenrich; grandchildren: Shawnna (James) Gehman, Stephanie and Jessica Wenrich; step-grandchildren: Kristina Hamme and Jeremy Wenrich; great-grandchildren: Megan and Kaylee Gehman; twin sisters: Romaine A. Frymyer and Theresa L. Zander.; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy was preceded in death by siblings: John M. Wimer, William J. Wimer, Richard Wimer, Mary E. Musser, Judith Houck, Jane E. Leed, and Joan L. Bireley.

A viewing will take place from 6 to 8 p.m., on Wednesday, Aug. 16, at the Charles F. Snyder, Jr. Funeral Home and Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 17, at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, 320 Church Ave., Ephrata. Dorothy will be laid to rest at St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery.

Lynn D. Sprecher, 71, Air Force vet, welder, enjoyed hunting, fishing along Juniata River

Lynn D. Sprecher, 71, formerly of Terre Hill, died Aug. 13, 2017, in his Brecknock Township residence.

He was the husband of Kathleen Ann (Harter) Sprecher, who he married July 19, 1969. Born in West Reading on Aug. 18, 1945, he was a son of Kathleen E. (Hirneisen) Sprecher of Lititz, and the late Arlington D. Sprecher Sr.

Lynn was a 1963 graduate of Garden Spot High School. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Gouglersville. Lynn was employed and a member of Local Union 420, UA Steamfitters and Pipefitters, Philadelphia, working mostly as a welder in power plants around Pennsylvania.

He was an Air Force veteran, serving two years in Guam and two in Maine. Lynn enjoyed hunting and fishing at his cabin and trailer along the Juniata River in Lewistown. He also enjoyed traveling and fishing in Canada.

Most important to Lynn was his family and his four daughters: Faith A. Sprecher of Shillington; Dawn M. Sprecher of Longmont, Colo.; Abby L. (Sprecher) Laity of Cumru Township; and Stacey K. Sprecher, wife of James Wall, of Spring Township. Other survivors include three siblings: Sandra, widow of Richard Jenkins, of Lititz; Arlington D. II, husband of Kathleen Sprecher, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and Sharon, widow of Sam Harris, of Tennessee. There are also five grandchildren: Thomas J. Coleman, Cody M. Coleman, Sienna A. Sprecher, Paige J. Wall, and Alyssa S. Whitehead.

At Lynn’s request, services will be held privately.

Howard W. Feeney, 83, mechanic, Railroad Express truck driver, enjoyed reading ‘The Globe’

Howard W. Feeney, 83, formerly of Denver, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, in Keystone Villa, Ephrata.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a son the late Edward J. and Anna (Wilson) Feeney.

Howard was a 1951 graduate of Bok Technical High School, the first to receive a high school diploma. He was a mechanic and trucker driver for Railroad Express, and was especially proud of his transports for The Philadelphia Mint. He enjoyed NASCAR and reading “The Globe.”

Surviving is a sister: Jean F. Black, Brigantine, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

Seven siblings predeceased him.

A memorial service will be planned by the family at a future time.

Bertha (Betty) E. Foltz, 87, of Brownstown, passed away Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at Lancaster General Hospital.

She was born in West Earl Township to the late Willis and Anna (Myer) Beam, and was the wife of the late Lester F. Foltz, who passed away in 2016.

Betty was a member of the Brownstown United Methodist Church.

She is survived by a son: Lesley Vaughn, husband of Donna (Hadesty) Foltz of Lititz; two daughters: Penny Foltz of Lititz; Roxanne, wife of Randy Kroh, of Ephrata; seven grandchildren: Sherrie Stoltzfus of Lititz; Tracy Deimler of Lititz; Michele, wife of Andy Ayers, of Lancaster; Billy Lastinger, husband of Kelly Hermann, of Manheim; Wendy, wife of Ken Morris, of Port Orchard, Wash.; Michael Wilson of Reinholds; Shan Groff of Santa Clarita, Calif.; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers: Willis Beam of Leola, Robert Beam of Ephrata; and a sister: Donna Lee Beam of Lancaster.

A celebration of life service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at 6 p.m., at the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 11 N. Church St., Brownstown.

Vernon Earl Schware, 80, Reamstown COG member, Rigidply Rafters, Nolt’s worker

Vernon Earl Schware, 80, of Myerstown, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, Aug. 18, 2017.

He was the husband of Shirley F. Burks Schware. He was born in Reading on June 11, 1937, a son of the late Earl D. and Edna M. Groh Schware.

He retired from Rigidply Rafters Inc., in Richland, and later worked part-time for Nolt’s Auto Parts in Myerstown. He was a member of the Reamstown Church of God and enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and golfing. Vernon especially loved engaging in various activities with his family.

Surviving in addition to his wife are children: Christine, wife of Nelson Weaver; Kenneth Schware and fiancée Priscilla Muzzy; Kevin, husband of Kimberly Schware; Corinne Mentzer; Jace, husband of Nicole Schware; grandchildren: Jessica Good; David Good; Cody, and wife Paige Schware; Kelsey Troutman; Amanda Hess; Daniel Edwards; Abigael Schware; Johnathon Demmy; Zachory Schware; Casey Hoyer; and Austin Mace; 10 great-grandchildren; and three nieces.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m., at Reamstown Church of God, 400 Pfautz Hill Road, Stevens. Interment will be made in the Millbach Cemetery. There will be a viewing on Aug. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m., and Aug. 25, from 10 to 11 a.m., both at the church.

Steven L. Spoo, 27, worked at Morgan Trucking, Packers fan, enjoyed street hockey

Steven L. Spoo, 27, of Lititz, died unexpectedly in Lebanon County on Aug. 12, 2017.

Surviving Steven are his parents: Kandi Kelley and Harry L. Moser; his fiancée: Kaitlyn Clemmens; his son: Ashten M. Spoo-Clemens of Bowmansville; two brothers: Michael S. Spoo of Camp Hill, and Justin A. Spoo of Chester County; and his maternal grandmother; Patricia A. Sheaffer. Also surviving are one aunt and two uncles.

Steven was preceded in death by his grandfather: Bradley M. Sheaffer.

He was a 2010 graduate from Garden Spot High School. Steven worked as a general laborer for Morgan Trucking. Steven loved his family, especially his son, Ashten, and his fiancée, Kaitlyn. He was a big Green Bay Packers fan, loved playing street hockey, and hanging out with his friends.

Relatives and friends were invited to visit with the family at Gravenor Home for Funerals, Ephrata, on Aug. 21 for a memorial service.

Deaths of Local Interest – Aug. 23, 2017

Richard “Dick” Bleiler passed away Aug. 14 at Chandler Hall in Newtown. Dick proudly served four years in the Navy during the Korean War, then worked as a telephone installer for Bell Telephone in Levittown for 31 years. He moved from Bensalem to Langhorne in 1979, where he ran his own successful business, Bleiler Communications, for 14 years. Upon retiring, Dick and his wife moved to a home in New Holland, where they enjoyed 20 wonderful years in the country. He became involved with a local model train club, and worked out every morning with good friends at the recreation center in Ephrata.

Erla Jane Fetty, 84, of New Holland, passed away Aug. 18 at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital. Following her career of more than 20 years of waitressing, Erla found success and joy in making German-style teddy bears to sell at local craft shows and flea markets. Erla spent most hours in her kitchen cooking, baking, and processing local fruits, as well as vegetables from her garden, and was well-known for sharing with family, friends and neighbors. Her pastimes included playing slot machines at casinos and frequenting yard sales. She will be remembered for her spirit of generosity and missed dearly. Her sister, Linda Lash, lives in Ephrata.

Glenn Lamar Garner, 80, of Milford, Del., formerly of Lititz, died Aug. 9. Glenn was a 1954 graduate of Rothsville High School. He started his teaching career in the Blossburg, Pa., school district and retired after 33 years, holding several positions, in the Hempfield School District. Glenn enjoyed boating and fishing in the Delaware Bay, making Delaware his permanent home after retirement. He was an active volunteer in his community. His sister, Fay E., wife of Ralph S. Wiest, lives in Ephrata. A niece, Debra L. Weit, resides in Akron.

Joseph E. McGovern, 90, WWII vet, Wickes manager, councilman, Galens and UPS worker

Joseph E. McGovern, 90, of Akron, passed away Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

Born July 26, 1927, in Reading, he was son of the late Walter and Helen McGovern.

Mr. McGovern was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during World War II.

Joseph graduated from Reading High School, Class of 1945, where he played soccer, even after graduation. He was a mail carrier before enlisting with the U.S. Navy. After serving his country, he was a retail salesman with Merritt and Central Lumber, both in Reading; then went to Wickes Lumber in Ephrata where he became assistant manager, eventually transferring to their Reading location where he was a top 25 manager in the country two years running, 1977-78 and 1978-79.

He served as a Democratic councilman in Shillington for four years. Additionally, Joseph worked at Galen’s in Ephrata and following his retirement, worked 15 years for UPS as car wash supervisor. He was a lifetime member of the Reading/Berks Basketball Old Timers and the Excelsior Beneficial Association.

Surviving are his loving wife of 29 years: Judith (Kilhefner) McGovern of Akron; son: Michael McGovern, and wife Susan Shelly of Shillington; daughter: Karen Bontrager of Michigan; stepson: Eric Fausnacht and life partner, Jeffrey Slocum of Bucks County; stepdaughters: Krista Fausnacht, at home; Lori Fischer of Gettysburg; and Michelle Young of Reamstown; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Ephrata.

William Brenner, 76, worked at Rohrer’s Quarry, enjoyed travel, NASCAR, baseball

William Brenner, 76, of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in Reading to the late Margaretta Brenner, and was the husband of the late Irene (Goshert) Brenner, who passed away in 2011.

William was a heavy equipment operator for Rohrer’s Quarry and Lanchester Landfill. He enjoyed traveling, NASCAR racing, and watching baseball.

William is survived by three daughters: Judy A., wife of Donald Dietrich, of Akron; Janet L., wife of Joe Boyce, of Hopeland; Joan M., wife of Kent Bradford, of Akron; a son: William A. Brenner of Ephrata; four grandchildren: Ashlee Dietrich, Kayla Bradford, Taylor Brenner, and Janelle Christian and a great-grandson: Hunter.

They family would like to express their gratitude to Lancashire Hall for the care William received during his stay.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Allen B. Sensenig, 91, father of two, worked at Tyson, Sunline, Akron U.Z. Church member

Allen B. Sensenig, 91, of Lancaster, passed away Saturday, Aug. 12, 2017, at Lancaster General Hospital.

He was born in Lancaster County to the late Barton and Ada (Bichart) Sensenig, and was the husband of the late Anna H. (Eberly) Sensenig, who passed away in 2009.

He was a member of Akron United Zion Church. Allen worked in sanitation for Victor Weaver and Tyson. In his early years, he was a house painter. After retirement he worked for Sunline Coach Co. and later for Nolt’s Auto parts. He enjoyed gardening.

Allen is survived by two daughters: Lucy A., wife of Merle E. Graver, of Lancaster; Linda K., wife of Craig D. King, of Ephrata; a granddaughter: Eugenea K. Graver; and three brothers: Amos Sensenig of Manheim, Jacob Sensenig of Ephrata, Barton Sensenig of Myerstown.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Elsie, Florence, and Ada Sensenig.

Services were held Aug. 19 at Akron United Zion Church, with Pastor Kenneth Redcay officiating. Interment took place in the Mellingers Union Cemetery.

Dora F. Hornberger, 84, East Cocalico grad, New Holland Family restaurant, Moyer’s worker

Dora F. Hornberger, 84, of Brownstown, passed away Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, at Conestoga View.

She was born in East Cocalico Township to the late Harry and Sallie (Nagle) Hirniesen and was the wife of the late Harold Hornberger who died in 1993.

Dora graduated from East Cocalico High School. She retired after working for the New Holland Family Restaurant. Prior to that she worked for the W.W. Moyer Co. She was a member of Swamp Christian Fellowship Church. She enjoyed crocheting, reading, and attending yard sales.

Dora is survived by four children: John, husband of Sandy (Merklinger) Hornberger, of Strasburg; Ronald L., husband of Florence “Doll” (Merklinger) Hornberger, of Quarryville; Barbara A. Rodman-Myers, wife of Jeffrey Myers, of Brownstown; and Joan Gappa of Ephrata; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Anna Mae and Mabel Hirniesen, formerly of Denver.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son: James D. Hornberger; two brothers: Emory and Paul Hirniesen; a sister: Flora Hirneisen; and a sister-in-law: Kathryn Hirniesen.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 24, at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, with Pastor Larry Kipp officiating. Interment will take place in the Swamp Cemetery.

Deaths of Local Interest – Aug. 30, 2017

Timothy “Tim” P. Brown, 60, passed away Aug. 20. He was employed by Phoenix Contact and previously owned Lititz Auto and The Farmer’s Hope Inn. Tim began his career in electronics at Clair Brothers. Tim’s smile lit up the room and he will be remembered for his kind and loving personality. He gave 110 percent in all that he did and was one of the most open-minded and generous souls someone could meet. A daughter, Andrea Payne (Shawn), lives in Denver.

Elvin Curtis Funk, 86, passed away Aug. 21 at Landis Homes, Lititz. He and his wife, Betty Jane Kreider, celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on Feb. 2. In 1961, they became the sixth generation to own and operate the Funk Homestead in Manor Township since 1758. They shared their home with children via the Fresh Air Program as well as Mennonite-Your-Way guests, and others. They volunteered in numerous capacities. Late in life, Curtis and Betty enjoyed travels to many places including Hawaii, Alaska, Jamaica, Bermuda, and the Canadian Rockies. They entertained family and friends at their cabin in Pine Creek, Lycoming County. A daughter, Janie, married to Leon Horst, lives in Ephrata.

Helen I. Horn, 76, of Lancaster, died Aug. 26 at Lancaster Regional Medical Center. Helen retired from Luther Acres in Lititz, as a nurse’s assistant. She was a member of the Lancaster First Church of God and was a member of the church choir. She was a former den leader for Pack No. 129, a committee chairman for Troop No. 64, and was a recipient of the District Award of Merit. Her son, Mark A. Horn, and his wife Chantay, live in Denver.

Alvin G. Wise, 83, formerly of Stevens, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017, at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

He was born in Earl Township. to the late Henry and Ruth (Getz) Wise, and was the husband of the late Merla (Rabold) Wise, who passed away in 2001.

He attended Reamstown Church of God for many years and had a ministry known as Store House Ministries. Alvin was a self-employed painter. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, hunting, and raising bunnies.

Alvin is survived by a son: Rick L., husband of Shirley (Kramer) Wise, of Roaring Branch; two daughters: LuAnn, wife of Ronald Martin, of Ephrata; Teresa W., wife of Philip Lefever, of Denver; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother: Carl, husband of Mary Wise, of Ephrata; and a sister: Mildred Frederick of Cocalico.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Robert, Henry Jr., and Paul Wise; and four sisters: Joanne Martin, Esther Wise, Ruth (Doll) Weaver, and Pauline White.

Services were held Aug. 29 at Reamstown Church of God, Stevens, with Pastor Arthur T. Karick officiating. Interment took place in the Mellingers Union Cemetery.

Sandra L. Reasoner, 76, New Holland, mother of four

Sandra L. Reasoner, 76, of New Holland, passed away Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was born in Honey Brook to the late G. Robert and Mildred (Stradling) Lewis, and was the wife of Lester Reasoner.

In addition to her husband, Sandra is survived by two sons: Bryan Nestorick of Ogden, Utah; and Virgil, husband of Amy Nestorick, of Kernersville, N.C.; four grandchildren; and a sister: Priscilla Scharek of Florida.

In addition to her parents, Sandra was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Nestorick Sr.; and two sons: Harry Jr. and Michael Nestorick.

A memorial service was held Aug. 28 at Stradling Funeral Home, Akron. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Georgia L. Kudela, 85, of Manheim, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2017, at Manor Care in Lebanon.

She was born in Lebanon to the late George and Leila (Hawkins) Benner, and was the wife of the late Anthony J. Kudela, who passed away in 1986.

She was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church. Georgia was a homemaker. She also worked for Warner Lambert, the Akron Gift Shop, and most recently 322 Travel Plaza. She loved sports, especially ACC basketball, and was an avid North Carolina and Duke fan.

Georgia is survived by son: Anthony G. Kudela; and a grandson: Zach Kudela.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Carl Eugene Hornberger, 61, of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, Aug. 20, 2017, at home.

He was born in Ephrata to the late Carl H. and Janet M. (Diehm) Royer Hornberger.

Carl was a stock clerk for Weis Market. He enjoyed crossword puzzles and rock and roll music.

Carl is survived by a sister: Betty M., wife of Lester Weaver, of Denver; and three brothers: Dale S. Hornberger of Ephrata; Dennis M. Hornberger of Ephrata; Terry, husband of Nancy Hornberger, of Denver.

John Brientnall, 101, professional engineer at AC Wood, enjoyed music, Phils fan

John Brientnall, 101, of Newtown, passed away on Friday, Aug. 18, 2017, at Chandler Hall Health Services.

He was born in Lancaster to the late William and Martha (Good) Brientnall.

He was a member of New Life Christian Church.

John was a direct descendant of David Brientnall, of the Quaker Colony that settled in Philadelphia in 1682, and whose marriage is recorded in the Arch Street Meeting House in Philadelphia as being the third on record of that colony.

He was a graduate of Chester High School and Drexel University. He was a professional engineer who retired from AC Wood Associates. John enjoyed the Philadelphia Phillies, bowling, gardening, traveling, music, and spending time with his family.

John is survived by his three children: John Brientnall Jr.; Gilbert, husband of Mary Brientnall; Christine, wife of Gary Lee; a sister: Jeanne Reischer; seven grandchildren: Susan, Mark, John, Thomas, Kara, Noelle, and Craig; 12 great-grandchildren; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Viola (Riley) Brientnall; two brothers; and two sisters.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.
