John W. Burkholder, 84, Tyson Food retiree, father of nine, Christian Aid volunteer

John W. Burkholder, 84, of Denver, died Thursday, May 18, 2017, at his home.

Born in East Earl, he was the son of the late Michael and Emma (Weaver) Burkholder. He was married to Alverta (Rutt) Burkholder.

John retired in 2006 from Tyson Food in New Holland after 39½ years. Following his retirement he volunteered at Christian Aid Ministries. He was a member of Weaverland Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference.

Surviving in addition to his wife are nine children: Linda R., married to Eugene Z. Horst, of Newmanstown; Elaine R., married to Mervin Wenger, of Womelsdorf; Wilma R., married to Raymond B. Martin, of Fleetwood; Earl R., married Ann Louise (Weaver) Burkholder, of Narvon; Arlene R., married to Leonard B. Martin, of Newmanstown; Dawn R., married to Emory N. Martin, of Fleetwood; John R., married to Judy L. (Weaver) Burkholder, of Denver; Judy R., married to Lynn D. Strickler, of Lititz; and David R., married to Wilma M. (Martin) Burkholder, of Reinholds; his stepmother: Anna Burkholder of East Earl; four brothers: M. Lloyd, married Anna Mary (Martin) Burkholder, of Lebanon; Titus W., married Anna (Sensenig) Burkholder, of Gordonville; Leon W., married Vera (Nolt) Burkholder, of New Holland; and Frank W., married to Eva (Good) Burkholder of East Earl; and a sister: Arlene W., married to Melvin Z. Horst, of Cochranville; 34 grandchildren; and 51 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death are three brothers: Melvin W., Raymond W., and Weaver W. Burkholder; and a sister: Edna W. Martin.

Funeral services were held May 22 at Weaverland Mennonite Church, with Bishop Amos G. Martin officiating. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.

Constance L. Sweigart, 81, Cinderella, Sharp Shopper worker, enjoyed carnivals, knitting, family time

Constance L. “Connie” Sweigart, 81, formerly of Denver Borough, died May 19, 2017, in ManorCare Lancaster.

Born in Reading, she was a daughter of the late Ray E. Hornberger and Lila Mae (Gehman) Hornberger Horning Kieffer.

Connie was a 1953 East Cocalico High School graduate, a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, and worked at Cinderella Knitting Mills and Sharp Shopper. She cherished family times, enjoyed attending local carnivals and knitting.

Surviving is a daughter: Kathy A. (John R.) Weinhold, Ephrata; son: Richard K. (Amy) Sweigart, Dushore; grandchildren: Chad, Heather, Melissa, and Richard; six great-grandchildren; and a sister: Gloria Reider, Lebanon,.

A twin sister, Constantine, predeceased her.

Funeral services were held May 23 from Good Funeral Home, Reamstown, with Pastor C. Michael Roney officiating. Burial was in Wyomissing Cemetery, Gouglersville.

Gertrude G. Frankenfield, 92, of Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

She was born in Reading to the late Herbert E. and Grace E. (Gates) Pendleton, and was the wife of the late R. Donald Frankenfield, who passed away in 2015.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Ephrata. Gertrude was the valedictorian of the Class of 1942 at Ephrata High School. She was a nursery school teacher at the Ephrata Rec Center, worked at the gift shop at the Ephrata Cloister, and retired from The Ephrata Review. Gertrude enjoyed knitting, crossword puzzles and reading.

She is survived by two daughters: Donna K., wife of Lee Demmy; Diane L., wife of Jake Stief Jr.; three grandchildren: Tammy, wife of Perry Saunders; Troy, husband of Jill Mundorff; Stacey, wife of Jonas McGallicher; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters: Myrtle Albrecht and Betty Buchanan.

Services were held May 22 at Stradling Funeral Home, Ephrata, with Pastor Walter S. Carter officiating. Interment followed in the Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Frankie Allen Reeves, 23, worked at Denver Cold Storage, loved music, willing to help anyone

Frankie Allen Reeves, 23, of Akron, lost his battle with addiction on Sunday, May 14, 2017, at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in West Allis, Wisc., to Charity (Hamby) Reeves and the late Frankie Lee Reeves.

Frankie worked for Denver Cold Storage. He enjoyed being outdoors, listening to music, playing his games, being a goofball, and would never think twice to help someone out if they asked. Frankie struggled with addition for several years, and currently was trying his hardest to get the help that he needed for his mental health.

In addition to his mother, Charity (Hamby) Breneman, Frankie is survived by a sister: Skyler Cheyanne Reeves; a stepfather: John Breneman; his girlfriend of eight years: Ashley Burkholder; his aunt: Deana Reider, and husband, Art; his maternal grandfather: Grady Hamby and wife, Dena; his paternal grandparents; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Frankie was preceded in death by his father: Frankie Lee Reeves; and his much loved nana: Debbie Parker.

A visitation was held May 22 at Stradling Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Jennifer Caummauf officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Mildred M. Leone, 106, enjoyed dancing, knitting, time spent with family

Mildred M. Leone, 106, Denver, died May 19, 2017, in Ephrata Manor.

Born in Manhattan, N.Y., a daughter of the late Liborio and Concetta (Esposito) Esposito, her husband, Louis Leone, died in 1963.

She was of the Catholic faith. Mildred cherished her family, enjoyed dancing, knitting, crocheting, crossword puzzles, and word searches.

Surviving are her daughters: June A. Salmeri, Oregon; and Carol P. (James T.) Condon, Denver; sons: Daniel A. (Rose) Gatto, Manorville, N.Y.; and Louis J. (Rosemarie) Leone, Ephrata; daughter-in-law: Rosary Leone, Staten Island, N.Y.; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

A son: Richard E. Leone; and six siblings also predeceased her.

A Christian prayer service was held from Good Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, Reamstown, on May 22.

Wilmer E. Hall, 87, Army vet, owned Akron Electronics, former Akron Borough manager, Civil War enthusiast

Wilmer E. Hall, 87, of Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, May 16, 2017, at Wellspan Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was the son of the late Ira L. and Edna Mae (Witmer) Hall. He was born in Lancaster and moved to Akron when he was one year old. He was the husband of the late Alice Louise (Hess) Hall for 56 years.

Wilmer was a graduate of Ephrata High School, class of 1948. He served in the U.S. Army where he was a guided missile technician. He was first employed at Armstrong in his teen years. He then worked for 10 years at RCA, and was one of the first to become a color TV technician. Later, he opened his own business at Akron Electronics which he operated for 30 years.

He was elected four times to Akron Borough Council, and became the first Akron borough manager, a position in which he served for 18 years. He spent many hours at the Lloyd Roland Park with engineers, laying out the road to the park, locating the pond area, the memorial stone entrance, creating the lighting system and laying out the bicycle/walking trails. He was responsible for the location of the lodge in the park.

He was a member of Cloister Post #429, American Legion, where he was the secretary and president; an organizer and charter member at the Hillcrest Swim Club in Akron; and the zoning officer and code enforcer at Leacock Township for 23 years.

He and Alice traveled the United States, overseas and the Caribbean Islands many times. He enjoyed ballroom dancing to the music he loved, spending time working on his computer and smart phones, and playing golf with his many friends. He had a pilot’s license and enjoyed flying, especially when he piloted the Goodyear Blimp. Baseball was a part of his life. He was a New York Yankees fan, and he was member of the Lancaster County Jr. Championship Team in 1947.

He was a Civil War enthusiast, spending time on all of the major Civil War battlefields. He studied the life of Abraham Lincoln intensively. He even memorized the Gettysburg Address, farewell speech at Springfield, and part of the second inaugural speech.

Wilmer is survived by his daughters: Karen L. Stoner of Akron; Debra A. Hall of Ephrata; a granddaughter: Sherri, wife of Mark Feinour of Delaware; a grandson: Shane, husband of Greta Stoner; four great-grandchildren: Connor and Riley Feinour, Avery and Makenna Stoner; a brother: Stanley, husband of Thelma Hall of Ephrata; three sisters: Anna Jane, wife of Richard Glisson of Quarryville; Ruth Ann, wife of Morris Hursh of Lititz; Carol Sue, wife of the late Jerry Burkholder of Lancaster; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother: Ruth Hall; and a brother: Melvin Hall.

A memorial service was held May 22 at the Donecker Chapel at Ephrata Manor, with Pastor Tom Weber officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

The family would like to thank the staff at Ephrata Manor for the love and care they gave Willy over the past nine months.

Mary Ann Groff, 83, Martin’s Country Market worker, mother of six, enjoyed gardening

Mary Ann Groff, 83, of Richland, formerly of Stevens, died Friday, May 26, 2017 at Richland Christian Home.

Born in East Earl, she was the daughter of the late Abram and Mary (Weaver) Hurst. She was married 63 years on May 1 to Ernest B. Groff.

Mary Ann was a homemaker and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren along with tending her flowers and watching birds. She worked at Eberly Poultry and Martin’s Country Market part time. She also enjoyed helping her husband cut quilt patches from scrap for relief. She also had a ministry of sending cards to family and friends.

Surviving are six children: Leonard, married to Dolores (Nauman) Groff of Leola; Linda, married to Philip Hollinger of East Earl; Mary Jane, married to Frank Zimmerman of Leola; Leah Fay, married to Leon Weaver of Reinholds; Barbara Ann, married to Clair Long of New Holland; and Ernest Ray, married to Glenda (Snyder) Groff of Ephrata; 28 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are three brothers: Moses, Raymond, and Samuel Hurst; and two sisters: Esther Nelson, and Margaret Sensenig.

Funeral services were held May 31 at Martindale Mennonite Church, Ephrata, with the Bishop Daryl Weaver, Dave Sensenig, Eugene Weaver, and Barry Wenger officiating. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.

Bruce D. Miller, 59, Crystal Springs Water driver, avid bicyclist, enjoyed family time

Bruce D. Miller, 59, of Ephrata, passed away on Monday, May 22, 2017, at home.

He was born in Philadelphia to the late Clarence and Elma (Ibaugh) Miller.

Bruce was a truck driver for Crystal Springs Water. Bruce was an avid bicyclist. You could see him riding all over town, putting in 20 miles a day, rain or shine. He also had a passion for motorcycles. Bruce enjoyed attending activities with his grandchildren, and spending time with family and close friends.

Bruce is survived by a son: Michael, husband of Ashley Brabson, of Ephrata; four grandchildren: Michael, Macie, Emma, and Mylee; and a brother: Ed, husband of Joanne Miller, of Lawrenceville, N.J.

A visitation was held May 31 at Stradling Funeral Home, Akron.

Susan M. Martin, 67, LAMS bus driver, Hinkletown Mennonite member, playwright

Susan M. Martin, 67, of Lititz, passed away from complications of a rare lung disease, on Thursday, May 25, 2017, at her home.

She was born in East Earl Township to the late Clarence M. and Lydia H. (Martin) Weaver, and was the wife of Ira M. Martin, with whom she shared 48 years of marriage.

She was a life-long member of the Hinkletown Mennonite Church, where she was active in Grief Share Ministry, We Care Prison Ministry-Alabama and CB Cast group.

Susan was a school bus driver for more than 30 years, driving for both Lititz Area Mennonite School and most recently for Groff Transportation. She loved her family and was excited with the addition of each grandchild. She frequently hosted family meals, and was very talented and creative, which came out in her choice of hobbies. She enjoyed crocheting, cross-stitching, piecing of quilts and flower gardening. She was an avid writer, and wrote many poems. She was part of a writing group who wrote Christian plays. Her love for the Lord was evident in everything she did.

In addition to her husband, Susan is survived by three children: Melanie A. Martin of Akron; Marvin R., husband of Kendra (Weaver) Martin, of Stevens; Melinda S., wife of Steven Hoover, of Ephrata; six grandchildren: Kara, Clay and Grant Martin; Michael, Lincoln and Natalie Hoover; three brothers: Lester M., husband of Lois (Martin) Weaver, of Lancaster; Clarence Weaver Jr. of Syracuse, N.Y.; Charles, husband of Karen (Horning) Weaver, of Lititz; and four sisters: Sarah, wife of Roger Kilhefner, of Lititz; Lucy, wife of John Zimmerman, of Ephrata; Mary Ann, wife of Dale Martin, of Lebanon; Julia, wife of Joe Witmer, of Elm.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son: Michael I. Martin; and a brother: Marvin Weaver.

Services were held May 31 at Hinkletown Mennonite Church, Ephrata, with Pastor Glenn Sauder officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining church cemetery.

Shelva Jean Witmer, 77, devoted grandmother, enjoyed cooking, gardening, Boston Terriers

Shelva Jean Witmer, 77, of Denver, passed away peacefully Monday, May 22, 2017, at home with family by her side.

She was born in Spring Township, Berks County, daughter of the late Clarence Steffy and Katie (Mae) Hiester Steffy, and was the wife of Dale L. Witmer, with whom she shared 61 years of marriage on May 5.

Shelva loved gardening, crocheting, cooking, and played a consistent, caring role in helping to raise her eight grandchildren. Shelva was the best at refereeing backyard sporting events, treating skinned knees, and making sure her grandchildren finished their lunches. She spent many hours watching her grandchildren excel on athletics fields up and down the east coast. “Ma” also loved Boston Terriers, and was always watching for the elusive hummingbirds.

In addition to her husband, Shelva is survived by two sons: Dean Witmer, husband of Beth (Hackman), of Ephrata; and Todd Witmer, husband of Theresa (Mozeliak), of Ephrata; a daughter: Lee Ann Ueberroth of Stevens; eight grandchildren: Erin, Daniel, Richard III, Katie, Kyle, Courtney, Kayla, and Carissa; two great-grandchildren; Ellie and Trey; and a sister: Linda Shaak of Stevens.

The family would like to express gratitude to the many doctors, nurses and staff affiliated with the Reading Hospital; but a special thank you to Dr. Cecilia Smith and Dr. David George for their ongoing care and compassion.

Services were held May 25 at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver, with Pastor Mark Johnson officiating. Interment followed in the Muddy Creek Cemetery.

Kathryn M. Seibel, 98, Springville Mennonite member, quilter, had 142 great-grandchildren

Kathryn M. Seibel, 98, of Denver, formerly of Clay School Road, Ephrata, entered into eternal rest Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at Cocalico Christian Home.

Born in East Earl Township on Aug. 7, 1918. She was the daughter of the late Harry and Mary (Martin) Zimmerman.

She was married in November 1937 to the late Warren I. Seibel, who passed away in 1982.

She was a member of Springville Mennonite Church. Kathryn was a homemaker. She enjoyed quilting, reading, and doing puzzles.

Kathryn is survived by seven children: Miriam, wife of Melvin Nolt, of New Holland; Irvin, husband of Elva (Nolt) Seibel, of Paradise; Clara, wife of James Lee Newswanger, of Ephrata; David, husband of Mary Jane (Rutt) Seibel, of Stevens; Warren Jr., husband of Mabel (Sensenig) Seibel, of Stevens; Kathryn, wife of Donald Groff, of Lititz; Jason, husband of Karen (Habecker), of Ephrata; 33 grandchildren; 142 great-grandchildren; 33 great-great-grandchildren; and a brother: Paul Zimmerman of Lititz.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two granddaughters; a great-grandson; a great-great-granddaughter; and four siblings: Edna Martin, Elmer Zimmerman, Clara Martin, D. Martin Zimmerman.

Services were held May 31 at Springville Mennonite Church, Ephrata, with Bishop Melvin Martin officiating. Interment took place in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

S. Norma Weaver, 83, formerly of Goodville, passed away Monday, May 22, 2017, at Lincoln Christian Home, Ephrata.

She was born in West Earl Township on Aug. 20, 1933, daughter of the late Amos S. and Eva M. (Fox) Groff. She was the wife of the late Levi E. Weaver, who died Dec. 27, 1991.

She was a member of the Valley View Mennonite Church. Norma was a homemaker and was employed part time by Shady Maple Cafeteria for more than 20 years.

Norma is survived by four sons and a daughter: Vernon E., husband of Rhoda (Good) Weaver, of Stevens; Galen R., husband of Rosalie (Miller) Weaver, of Martinsburg; Clair R., husband of Ruthann (Burkholder) Weaver, of Altona, Manitoba (Canada); Gerald L., husband of Kaylene (Boll) Weaver, of Lebanon; Carolyn M., wife of Joel Bair, of New Oxford; 29 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Irwin, husband of Joyce (Snavely) (Hershey) Groff, of Lititz; Harold, husband of Anna Mary (Lapp) Groff, of Lancaster; John, husband of Carol (Good) Groff, of Ephrata; two sisters: Mary Ella Groff of Ephrata; and Grace, wife of Harvey E. Martin, of Orrstown.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson: Jordan Dale Weaver; a granddaughter: Kaela Jean Weaver; a brother: Clarence Groff; and a sister-in-law: Mary Jane (Hershey) Groff.

Services were held May 29 at Valley View Mennonite Church, with Bishop Harold Good officiating. Interment was in the Centerville Mennonite Church Cemetery, Martindale. Kindly omit flowers.

Mary Jane Fassnacht, 96, longtime area registered nurse, enjoyed creating life stories

Mary Jane Fassnacht, 96, of Lititz, and formerly of Ephrata, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2017, at Luther Acres.

Her husband, the late Roy U. Fassnacht, passed away Feb. 25, 1981. They were married Aug. 8, 1943.

Mary Jane was born in Akron, daughter of the late Edgar and Vera (Stephan) Binkley. She graduated from Ephrata High School in 1937 and Lancaster General College of Nursing in 1939.

As a registered nurse, Mary Jane worked briefly at the Ephrata Community Hospital, then at Dr. Eugene Miller’s medical office in Ephrata in the 1940s and then again in the 1960s, briefly as the Ephrata High School Nurse, and then most recently at the Denver Nursing Home. Mary Jane also worked part time at Royer’s Flower Shop.

Mary Jane attended Bethany United Church of Christ and Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, both of Ephrata. She was a life member of the Ephrata Women’s Club, member of the Ephrata Hospital Auxiliary, a Meals On Wheels volunteer, and Girl Scout Leader.

As a resident of Luther Acres, she enjoyed knitting, games, creating life stories, and participating in a variety of activities.

Mary Jane is survived by one daughter: Carla S. Weidman (John); two grandchildren: J. Scott Weidman (Lisa), and Rebecca Weidman (Andrew Sapiente); one great-granddaughter: Lucia Weidman; one sister: Ruth Goshert; one niece; and one nephew.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mary Jane was preceded in death by two sisters: Beulah Eshleman and Dorothy Groff.

Graveside funeral services were held May 27 at Mellinger’s Cemetery in Schoeneck.

Gladys Schoch Eberly, 88, of Keystone Villa and formerly of Mt. Airy Road, Stevens, passed suddenly Thursday morning, May 25, 2017.

Mrs. Eberly was retired from Eberly Poultry Incorporated, which she co-founded in 1948 with her late husband, Levi. She was an active member of Mellingers Evangelical Lutheran Church in Schoeneck.

Mrs. Eberly was a member of the Schoeneck Lions Club and served as president. Active in the community, she served many years as treasurer of the Civic Association. She was also a member of the Ephrata Farm Women. She served as a Girl Scout Leader for Troop #203 in the 1960s. She enjoyed cats, bingo, golf, gardening, and traveling.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late John George and Anna Marie (O’Hara) Schoch.

Surviving are a son: Robert L., married to June Martin; and two daughters: Nancy E.; and Janet E., wife of Ed Dewey; three grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband: a son: Raymond George; a brother: John, husband of Lois Schoch; and three sisters: Margaret, Anne, and Mary.

Services were held May 31 at Mellingers Evangelical Lutheran Church, Stevens, with Rev. Timothy L. Craven officiating. Interment took place in the Mellingers Union Cemetery.

Violet S. Bauman, 84, Science Press worker, active at church, wrote ‘The Bauman Letters’

Violet S. Bauman, 84, of Ephrata, was called home on the morning of Wednesday, May 31, 2017, at Heart of Lancaster Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Ephrata, the daughter of the late William and Edna (Stauffer) Bauman.

Violet was a member of Mohler’s Church of the Brethren in Ephrata, where she served faithfully for many years in the nursery and helped out where needed. She was a loving and dedicated sister, mother and grandmother. Violet was an avid reader, enjoyed going to plays, and later working in the clothing store at the Cocalico Senior Center. However her real passion and love was for the Lord, her family and researching her family’s genealogy. She was always delighted to discuss any of them and facilitated many family reunions. Violet was excited to compile and publish a book titled ‘The Bauman Letters,’ and had hoped to publish additional family books in the future. She worked for Science Press and Skips Cutting before happily retiring.

Violet will be missed by her two sons and a daughter: Steven (Angie) Bauman, John (Dawn) Bauman, Billie Bauman; granddaughter and the apple of her eye: Brooke Bauman; brothers: Robert (Eva) Bauman, Richard (Terri) Bauman; a sister: Loretta (Burnell) Kreider; sisters-in-law: Ruby Bauman and Pat Bauman.

She was preceded to her reward by brothers: Frank and Donald Bauman; and a sister: Lily Mackey.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m., on Friday, June 9, at Mohler’s Church of the Brethren, 21 E. Mohler Church Road, Ephrata, with Pastor Carl L. Brubaker officiating. The family will receive friends and family 30 minutes prior to the service. A private interment will be held at the convenience of the family.

Lizzie W. (Leid) Imhoff, 90, of Goshen, Ind., died May 22, 2014.

She was born Nov. 11, 1926 to John G. and Anna Weaver Leid. She married Elmer J. Imhoff on May 26, 1983. He passed away Oct. 14, 2001. He was first married to Mary G. Weaver, who died Aug. 29, 1981.

Lizzie was stepmother to all surviving family: four daughters: Rhoda (Elon) Martin, Goshen, Ind.; Esther (Elmer) Ramer, Carson City, Mich.; Lois (Aaron) Ramer, Rochester, N.Y.; Rachel (late John) Ramer, Wakarusa, Kansas; one son: David (Emma) Imhoff, Goshen, Ind.; two daughters-in-law: Pauline (late Daniel) Imhoff, Tippecanoe, Ind.; and Hettie (late Heber) Imhoff, Goshen, Ind.; 41 grandchildren, 229 great-grandchildren; 32 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Emma (Willis) Nolt and Susanna (late Alan) Lemmon; and a sister-in-law: Lydia Leid, New Holland.

Preceding her in death are her husband: Elmer; three sons: Daniel, Heber, and Paul; son-in-law: John Ramer; a grandson; six great-grandchildren; two sisters; and five brothers.

She was a member of the Yellow Creek Old Order Mennonite Church. Lizzie had been employed by Ephrata Community Hospital for many years, in the kitchen and laundry, until she married and moved to Indiana.

God’s finger touched her and she slipped away from earth’s dark shadows to a brighter day.

God saw the road was getting rough. The hills were hard to climb.

He gently closed her weary eyes and whispered, “Peace be thine.”

Patricia A. Lash, 68, of Reading, passed away Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at Penn State Health St. Joseph Hospital in Reading.

She was born in Lancaster to the late Harold and Mary Jane (Landis) Lash.

Patricia was a graduate of the Empire Beauty School. She enjoyed cooking, arts and crafts, collecting figurines, going to the casino, and renaissance fairs. She loved her grandkids and great-grandkids, and her dogs, Burt and Ernie. Patricia had worked as a waitress for the Exeter Family Restaurant.

Patricia is survived by three daughters: Denise A., wife of Juan “Johnny” Cruz Serrano Jr.; Wendi J., wife of James R. Shaffer; and Angela M., wife of John D. Eppinette; a son: James R. Specht, husband of Unkyung; nine grandchildren: Juan, Steven, Jordan, LaTonya, Tyler, Dylan, Austin, Travis, and Vivian; five great-grandchildren: Ayden, Jade, Damian, Kyla, and Sage; and a brother: Harold S. Lash Jr.

The funeral was held June 3 at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver. Interment took place in St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Brickerville.

Allen David Burkholder, 73, passed away in his Newmanstown home on Wednesday, May 31, 2017.

He was the husband of Anna Ruth Martin Burkholder. He was born in Ephrata Township on March 5, 1944, a son of the late Joseph O. and Susanna E. High Burkholder.

Allen was a retired farmer and a member of the Meadow Springs Mennonite Church, Myerstown.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children: Verna Wise and husband Raymond of Phelps, N.Y.; Lucille Martin and husband Wilmer of Bernville; Calvin Burkholder and wife Elaine of Mifflintown; Edna Burkholder of Newmanstown; John Burkholder and wife Joanne of Edgar, Wisc.; Mary Burkholder of Newmanstown; Martha Auker and husband Glenn of Womelsdorf; Elizabeth Hoover and husband Alvin of Blain; 57 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Amos Burkholder of Spencer, TN; Luke Burkholder of Memphis, MO; Melvin Burkholder and wife Lizzie of Hahnstown; Phares J. Burkholder and wife Lydia, WI; Norman H. Burkholder and wife Norma of Schoeneck; sisters, Mary H. Burkholder and Annie H. Burkholder, both of Ephrata.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Rebecca H. Burkholder.

Mary Ella Zimmerman, 59, of New Holland, passed away unexpectedly, Friday, June 2, 2017, at Lancaster General Hospital, due to injuries from an accident.

She was born in Berks County to the late Leroy and Sarah (Weaver) Martin, and was the wife of Alvin N. Zimmerman with whom she shared 39 years of marriage.

Mary Ella was a member of the Groffdale Frame Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference. She was a homemaker.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three children: Rosene, wife of Nathan Shirk, of Ephrata; Harlan, husband of Karen Zimmerman, of Ephrata; LoisAnn, wife of Dale Nolt, of Leola; 11 grandchildren; eight siblings: Irvin, husband of Esther Martin, of Mifflinburg; Anna Mae Martin of Mifflinburg; Esther, wife of Daniel Martin, of Lewisburg; Leon, husband of Marian Martin, of Millmont; Floyd, husband of Katie Martin, of Mifflinburg; Kenneth, husband of Dorothy Martin, of Mifflinburg; John David, husband of Louise Martin, of Mifflinburg; and Jerry, husband of Elva Martin, of Lewisburg.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother: Leroy Martin; and a granddaughter: Sarah Nolt.

Mao Yang, 64, Tyson retiree, mother of eight, enjoyed gardening, church activities

Mao Yang, 64, of Ephrata, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, May 21, 2017, at St. John’s Hospital in Maplewood, Minn., while visiting her daughters.

She was born in Pusagnaib, Laos, to the late Paj Houa Yang and Zoua Moua.

She retired from Tyson Foods in New Holland and was a lifelong member of Hmong Alliance Church in Leola. Mao was the loving mother of eight, who lived by her Christian faith. She has worked hard to give her children a good life. She enjoyed church activities, gardening, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are her eight children: Bee Xiong, Molly Xiong, Pao Xiong, Zepao Xiong, Chad Chandee Xiong, Chua Xiong, Ter Xiong and Tou Xiong; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister; five brothers; and her mother: Mai Vang.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, June 10, at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home and Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 9 a.m. to noon, and again from 5 to 8 p.m., on Friday, June 9; and two hours prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will take place in Mohler Brethren Cemetery, Ephrata.
