Milton “Buzz” Hartzell passed away June 3, 2014 in Alexandria, Va.
Buzz was born in Harrisburg, and attended West Reading High School. After serving in the U.S. Marines, he attended hotel restaurant school in Washington D.C. He then began a long and fulfilling career in the restaurant business.
Buzz loved food and enjoyed making others happy, so it was a perfect fit. He oversaw the kitchens at the Wernersville State Hospital, The Sword and Shield in York, Canterbury Court in Lancaster, and Stokesay Castle in Berks County. He operated several of the Howard Johnson’s located along the PA turnpike and served as the food and beverage manager at the Host in Lancaster. He founded the Seafood Shanty restaurants and owned several establishments throughout his career including: The Garden in Ocean City, N.J., Hartzell’s Tea Room in Reading, and Meadow Hills Dining House in Lancaster.
He is survived by his sons: Eric Hartzell of Newmanstown, Daniel Wood of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Buck Hartzell of Alexandria, Va.; grandchildren: Katlyn Hartzell, Emily and Daniel Wood, Cal, Parker, and Grant Hartzell; and siblings: Gwen Haag of Bradenton, Fla., and Donald Hartzell of Glen Burnie, Md.
