Dorothy H. Sheaffer, 92, of New Holland, died after a brief illness on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016 at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy.
Born in New Holland, she was the daughter of the late J. Keller and Ruth V. (Swope) Mentzer. Her husband, William A. “Bill” Sheaffer, died Sept. 8, 2012.
Dorothy graduated from the West Chester State Teachers College, where she met her husband. She was a homemaker most of her life and also worked as a substitute teacher.
Dorothy was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the New Holland Historical Society. She loved serving as a volunteer at Lancaster General Hospital; and the New Holland Fair Association, where she assisted with the flower show. She baked spectacular Christmas cookies, and she loved dogs her whole life long.
Surviving are three children: William K., married to Lynne Sheaffer, of Ephrata; David F., married to Helen Sheaffer, of Brickerville; and Joanne Sheaffer, married to Jeff Steinbrink, of Lancaster; two grandsons: Matthew Sheaffer of Sinking Spring and Christopher Sheaffer of Ephrata; and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding her in death is a son: Stephen K. Sheaffer; a sister: June Harsh; and a step-brother: James Eby.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 11 a.m., at Garden Spot Village Chapel, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland with the Revs. Walter Guzman and Patrick McGarity as celebrants. Interment will be in the St. Stephen Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday at Garden Spot Village Chapel one hour prior to the service.
