Donald Joseph Mahlandt, 77, Ephrata, Air Force vet, Pennfield director of sales, OMPH parishioner

Donald Joseph Mahlandt, 77, of Ephrata, passed away at home Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015, following a struggle with ALS.

Don was born May 2, 1938, in Litchfield, Ill., son of the late Henrietta (Schwab) and Verne Mahlandt. He attended Marmion Military Academy in Aurora, Ill., and graduated from Saint Louis University. Following graduation, Don served as 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force at Bunker Hill Air Force Base in Indiana. Don retired as director of sales at Pennfield Corp. in Rohrerstown in 2001.

He married Teresa Keath Zook on April 8, 1974. Surviving in addition to his wife are seven children: Laura Mahlandt of Haverhill, Mass.; Lucy Slotcavage (John); Molly Craver; Don Mahlandt Jr. (Deana Cunningham); Chad Cramer (Lynn Stacks); Dan Mahlandt (Angi Benko); and Michelle Simmons (Ronnie). Also surviving is a sister: Kathy Emch, of St. Louis, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; two nephews; and a niece. A great-grandchild is expected in April. He is also survived by his constant companion, Frosty.

Preceding him in death is his brother: Kurt.

Don served as a Boy Scout leader. He enjoyed boating and waterskiing with his family at Raystown Lake during the time when his children were growing up. In later years, he enjoyed traveling with his wife. A lifelong Catholic, Don was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, Ephrata.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter, 321 Norristown Road, Suite 260, Ambler, PA 19002.

Services were held Sept. 29 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, Ephrata. He was interred with military honors at the cemetery of Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, Lancaster County.
