Pauline M. Emerick, 90, Denver, Ephrata Market Basketworker, assisted with antique shop

Pauline “Polly” M. Emerick, 90, of Denver, passed away Monday, May 18, 2015, at Denver Health & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Denver to the late Martin and Mary (Taylor) Shober and was the wife of the late Robert H. Emerick who passed away in 2007.

Polly was a lifelong member of Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church, Denver, and she dearly loved her church and church family. She was a devoted Nana to all her “sweeties” and an avid card player. During World War II she worked in Lancaster at Armstrong and much later at the Ephrata Market Basket grocery store. Lastly, she assisted her husband with his antique business.

She is survived by a daughter: Marysue, wife of Rick Ruth, of Ephrata; two granddaughters: Kristie, wife of Chris Schmid, of Ephrata; Jill, wife of Jeremy Zimmerman, of Lititz; six great-grandchildren: Olivia, Gracyn, and Caroline Schmid; Lauren, Chase, and Raegan Zimmerman; a sister: Ethel, wife of Pierce Lesher, of Adamstown; and a brother: Richard Shober of Ephrata.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by five brothers and five sisters.

The family would like to thank the Denver Health & Rehabilitation Center staff for the excellent care and love given to Polly. Also, thanks to the many friends and family who faithfully visited, called, and sent cards during the past 3½ years.

Services were held May 23 from Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church, Denver, with Pastor Joseph A. Veres officiating. Interment was in the Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Brickerville.

Jay L. Sites, 67, Denver, USAF fireman, turnpike commission worker, outdoorsman

Jay L. Sites, 67, of Denver, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2015, at the Lebanon VA Medical Center.

He was the husband of the late Darlene A. (Minnick) Sites. Born in Clay Township, on Dec. 23, 1947, Jay was a son of the late Ray and Pauline (Long) Sites.

He was a graduate of Cocalico High School and a retired employee of the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. Jay served as a fireman in the U.S. Air Force. He was member of Swamp Lutheran Church in Reinholds. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Jay is survived by a daughter: Drenea R. Rodriguez; a stepson: Juan C. Serrano Jr.; and a brother: Barry Sites; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son: Kevin A. Sites.

Graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, with full military honors.

Terry L. Rauser, 70, Ephrata native, Navy vet, cement finisher, family man

Terry L. Rauser, 70, of West Cocalico Township, formerly of Akron, passed away at Hospice and Community Care, in Mount Joy, Friday, May 22, 2015.

He was the husband of Shirley A. (Miller) Rauser for 29 years and the son of the late John B. and Ruth E. (Burkholder) Rauser. Terry was born in Ephrata and was a lifelong resident of the area.

He was employed as a cement finisher by J. Richard Burkholder and in later years by Stief Concrete of New Holland. He was known by his co-workers as the “Round Man.” He served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1966. Terry enjoyed watching wildlife critters at his Akron home and at Moroleigh TDC in Sullivan County. The love and pride he had for his family was felt and returned by them. He will be comfortable now and no longer have pain and suffering.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his stepdaughter: Valarie S. Good, wife of Timothy Heil, of Ephrata; and his stepson: Cory S. Good, husband of Amy Hutchinson, of Reinholds. Also surviving are step-grandchildren: Nicholas Heil, Cassandra Heil, Trent Good, and Tanner Good.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Glenn R. Aungst, 72, Hopeland, Bethlehem Steel worker, Baron Stiegel Lions member

Glenn R. Aungst, 72, of Hopeland, passed away Friday, May 22, 2015, at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia.

He was born in Pine Grove to the late James and Nora (Sattizhan) Aungst and was the husband of Georgene (Bickel) Aungst, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage Oct. 15, 2014.

Glenn graduated from Pine Grove High School. He was a member of the Brickerville United Lutheran Church, the Cocalico Sportsmen Club, the Baron Stiegel Lions Club Baron Stiegel, and the Pine Ridge Hunting Club. In the early years Glenn worked for Bethlehem Steel.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children: Theresa, wife of Edward Trout; Timothy, husband of Tammy (Lint) Aungst; Stacy Aungst; and Matthew, husband of Lesia Aungst; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother: Ernest Aungst; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter: Robin M. Aungst; and four siblings: Willard Aungst who was a World War II casualty; Violet Hikes, Pauline Bretzius, and Jean Aungst.

A viewing will be held Friday, May 29, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Brickerville United Lutheran Church, 340 East 28th Division Highway, Lititz. Funeral services follow at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Dr. Scott K. Davis officiating. Interment will take place in the Brickerville Emanuel Lutheran Cemetery.

Samyiah D. Floran, infant daughter of Benjamin Floran and Vanessa L. Jackson, was stillborn May 16 at Women & Babies Hospital of LGH. Her brother, David A. Furjanic Jr., lives in Ephrata.

Janet Frymyer Hoover, 87, of Lancaster, passed away at her home May 21, following a long illness. She worked at Eastbrook Family Health Center as a receptionist until she retired. Not only did she know each patient, she also knew each chart number. One of Janet’s legacies is her delicious homemade chicken pie that she delivered to families with new babies or to families in times of illness. Her brother, Robert Frymyer, lives in Akron.

Pauline M. Stoltzfus, 86, of Lancaster, formerly of Parkesburg, passed away at the Lancaster General Hospital May 23. Along with her late husband Lester, she owned a farm in the Parkesburg area and also operated a produce stand at Root’s Market of Manheim, Green Dragon of Ephrata and the Leesport Farmers’ Market. She enjoyed vacationing to Florida, traveling especially to Dollywood, camping, quilting and playing bingo

Durell Lee Zimmerman, 4, of New Holland, died May 23 at his home from natural causes related to his special needs condition since birth. Born in Ephrata, he was the son of Glen M. and Cristine (Brubaker) Zimmerman. His paternal grandparents, Raymond G. and Esther Mae (Martin) Zimmerman; and paternal great-grandfather, Henry H. Martin, live in Ephrata.

Judy A. Weber, 63, of Stevens, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at her residence.

She was born in Ephrata to the late Henry and Ruth (Frankhouser) Turner and was the wife of Titus Weber with whom she shared 44 years of marriage.

Judy was a member of the Metzler Mennonite Church. She was a homemaker, loved the beach, her family, and spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four children: Wendy, wife of Trevor Graham, of Ephrata; Rodney, husband of Wendy Weber, of Lebanon; Kristen, wife of Jason Updike, of Stevens; Adam, husband of Michelle Weber, of Denver; 10 grandchildren: Travis, husband of Nicole Graham, of Stevens; Tyler Graham; Tiffany and Austin Updike Chase, Olivia, Adelynn, Derek, Carson and Zachary Weber; a brother: Barry, husband of Sandy Turner, of Lancaster; and a sister: Linda, wife of George Foreman, of Stevens.

Services were held June 1 at Metzler Mennonite Church, Ephrata, with Pastor Nevin Horning officiating. Interment was in the Middle Creek Brethren Cemetery.

Elmer Ray Bassett, 69, of Ephrata, passed away Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at his residence.

He was born in Marion County, Ind., to the late Dudley and Nellie (Gatewood) Bassett and was the husband of Sandra L. Bassett with whom he shared 28 years of marriage.

Elmer had worked as a lineman for 45 years, being last employed by Henkels & McCoy, Blue Bell, before his retirement in 2009. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing cards.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters and a son; two stepdaughters and a stepson; a brother: Gregory Bassett of Southwest Port, Ind.; and a sister: Shirleene Shaw of Elizabethtown, Ind.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Robert Bassett; and a sister: Carolyn Sanders.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Mary Elizabeth Freeman, 94, Denver, Brecknock Elementary cafeteria manager, married 75 years

Mary Elizabeth Freeman, 94, of 418 W. Maple Grove Road, Denver, died Tuesday, May 26, 2015, at Ephrata Manor.

Her husband of 75 years, Paul Freeman, survives. Born in Brecknock Township, she was the daughter of the late Elmer H. and Mary C. (Bender) Good.

Elizabeth started and managed the cafeteria program at Brecknock Elementary School, retiring after 30 years. She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons: Nelson P. Freeman, Mohnton; and Robert R. married to Vaye Freeman, Denver; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother: Carl, married to Emma (Shupp) Good, Denver.

She was preceded in death by a sister: Lena Clark; and two brothers: Irvine Good and Roy Good.

Services were held May 31 at Peace United Church of Christ, Denver, with the Rev. William Hoch officiating. Private interment was in Bowmansville Union Cemetery.

Anna N. Sauder, 92, Ephrata, homemaker, Springville church, had 133 great-grandchildren

Anna N. (Weaver) Sauder, 92, of Ephrata, passed away Monday, May 25, 2015, at her residence after a lengthy illness.

She was born in Upper Leacock Township to the late Elmer and Anna (Musselman) Weaver and was the wife of the late Lester R. Sauder who passed away in 2013.

Anna was a member of the Springville Mennonite Church, Weaverland Conference. She was a homemaker.

Anna is survived by her eight children: Bernice, wife of Wayne Rissler, of East Earl; Louella, wife of Mark Good, of Lititz; Mary W. Sauder of Ephrata; John W., husband of Ida (Shirk) Sauder, of Waterloo, N.Y.; Anna W., wife of J. Ervin Showalter, of Loyal, Wisc.; Lloyd W., husband of Barbara (Hoover) Sauder, of Mt. Pleasant Mills; Verna W., wife of Philip Rissler, of Ephrata; Paul W., husband of Anna Mary (Weaver) Sauder, of Denver; 48 grandchildren; 133 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; six stepgrandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren; 15 stepgreat-great-grandchildren; a brother: Titus, husband of Lizzie (Hurst) Weaver of Ephrata; and a sister: Mary N. Weaver of New Holland.

In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by one grandson; one great-grandson; a brother: Isaac Weaver; six sisters: Emma Garman, Nora Wenger, Alma Kurtz, Bernice Nolt, Ada Sensenig, and Rhoda Weaver.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, May 28, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Midway Mennonite Reception Center, 210 E. Lexington Road, Lititz. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 29, at 8:45 a.m., at the Midway Mennonite Reception Center, with further services at 9:30 a.m., at the Springville Mennonite Church, 580 Springville Road, Ephrata, with Bishop Melvin Martin officiating. Interment will take place in the adjoining church cemetery.

Vilma D. Lapp, 78, Ephrata, Calvary Monument Bible Church member, enjoyed knitting

Vilma D. Lapp, 78, of Ephrata, formerly of Paradise, passed away at the Ephrata Community Hospital Thursday, May 28, 2015.

She was the wife of David G. Lapp with whom she celebrated 60 years of marriage on Aug. 18. Born in Atglen, she was the daughter of the late Ammon and Lillie Smoker Stoltzfus.

She was a member of Calvary Monument Bible Church of Paradise, where in the past she was a Sunday School teacher for the two-year-olds and also helped in the church library. She enjoyed knitting, reading, and riding motorcycle with her husband. Vilma was a member of Seven Pines Cabin.

Surviving besides her husband are three children: Ronald, husband of Darlene Eberly Lapp, of Gap; Darrell, husband of Karen Wilcox Lapp, of Ronks; Pamela, wife of Brian Herr, of Quarryville; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three siblings: Lavern Petersheim of North Carolina, William Stoltzfus of Ephrata, and Violet, wife of Alpha Yoder, of Christiana.

She was preceded in death by eight siblings: Harold, Daniel, Mark Stoltzfus, Rosella Slaymaker, Erma Lapp, Vera Kurtz, and Elizabeth and Mabel Stoltzfus.

A memorial service was held June 1 at Calvary Monument Bible Church, Paradise, Pastor Thomas Hubbard officiating. Private interment took place prior to the memorial service.

Arrangements were handled by the Shivery Funeral Home, Christiana and Paradise.

Reynold L. Zimmerman, 56, Ephrata, contractor at E-Z Home Builders, avid MDS volunteer

Reynold “Ren” L. Zimmerman, 56, of Ephrata, died unexpectedly Sunday, May 24, 2015.

Reynold was the husband of Ruth “Ruthie” S. (Groff) Zimmerman; they would have celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary on June 17. He was the son of G. Harold and Irene S. (Frankhouser) Zimmerman, Garden Spot Village, New Holland, formerly of Akron.

He will also be sorely missed by his sisters: Cynthia, wife of Camille Rouvre, Akron; Brenda, wife of Kevin Murphy, Ephrata; and his brother: Nelson, husband of Elaine (Engle) Zimmerman, Denver; as well as his eight nieces and nephews and six great nieces and nephews.

He was a 1976 graduate of Lancaster Mennonite High School. While in high school, he was a volunteer member of the Ephrata Ambulance with his father and worked alongside his grandfather, the late Christian Zimmerman, at Horning Chair Shop.

Following high school, he served one year in voluntary service in Philadelphia. His career as a contractor included the company of E-Z Home Builders Inc. with the late Irvin Enck and most recently being a property manager of rental properties. His wealth of expertise in facility management and systems was valued by his church and many other organizations and individuals.

Reynold was an active participant of Groffdale Mennonite Church. His passion was volunteering with Mennonite Disaster Service, where he worked on projects in Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Louisiana, New York, North Dakota, and Texas.

Services were held May 31 at Groffdale Mennonite Church, Leola. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

Mike D. Zilling, 25, Denver, Cocalico H.S. Class of, 2008, creative, enjoyed art, music

Mike D. Zilling, 25, of Denver, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, May 28, 2015.

He was born in Delaware County to James R. and Patricia A. (Ruggeri) Zilling of Denver.

Mike was a graduate of the Cocalico High School Class of 2008. He was a loving, unique, and goofy kid. Mike loved music, art, books, and was very creative.

In addition to his parents, Mike is survived by two brothers: James Zilling Jr., boyfriend of Tara Walls, of Ephrata; and Nick Zilling, boyfriend of Michelle Palardy, of Denver.

A visitation will be held Thursday, June 4, from 6 to 7 p.m., at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

James Eugene Shiffer. 77, Ephrata, USAF vet, retired from, Lancaster City PD, avid sports fan

James Eugene Shiffer, 77, of Ephrata, passed away Nov. 12, 2014 at the Lebanon VA Hospital.

Born in Ephrata, he was the son of the late James W. Shiffer and Pauline McCall Shiffer Witwer. Jim was married 35 years to Mary Elizabeth Retallack Shiffer before her death in 2002.

Surviving are his four sons: James (Wendy), of Bird-In-Hand; Joseph (Rebecca), of Lancaster; John (Debra), of Robesonia; Justin (Kelly), of Lancaster; and 10 grandchildren.

Jim served in the U.S. Air Force. He then became an officer for the Lancaster City Police Department, retiring in 1988 after spending 24 years on the force. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing golf.

Jim and Mary are interred at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville.

Harold R. Getz, 86, Ephrata, Korea vet, grounds, maintenance at ECH, NASCAR fan

Harold R. Getz, 86, of Ephrata, died at Ephrata Community Hospital Sunday, May 31, 2015, surrounded by loved ones after a short illness.

He is survived by his loving wife: Miriam F. (Frymyer) Getz; his daughter: Tina, and her husband Daniel Auker: granddaughter: Jennifer, and her husband Jody Gontero, all of Ephrata; grandson: Ryan Auker of West Chester; and sister: Annabelle Spies of Glendale, Ariz.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents: Jonas and Harriet (Houck) Getz; sister: Dorothy Steely; and brothers: Earl, Melvin, and Eugene Getz.

Harold was a lifetime member of Bethany United Church of Christ in Ephrata. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged.

Harold worked in new home construction for Lee Burkholder of Swartzville, and also as a painter until 1981. He later worked at Ephrata Community Hospital in grounds maintenance until his retirement in 1998.

His hobbies included woodworking, landscaping, gardening, fishing, and NASCAR. One of Harold’s biggest enjoyments was supporting his grandchildren’s sports, hobbies, and life endeavors. He enjoyed fellowship and fun with his neighbors and friends throughout the community.

Friends are invited to attend Harold’s memorial service Monday, June 8, at 7 p.m., at Bethany UCC, 140 E. Main St., Ephrata. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private.

Harold E. Auker, 76, Ephrata, Army vet, Woodstream, employee, enjoyed antiquing

Harold E. Auker, 76, Ephrata, died May 28, 2015, in Select Specialty Hospital, Camp Hill.

Born in East Cocalico Township, he was a son of Allen C. and Ida M. (Bush) Auker.

Harold was an Army veteran and worked 39 years for Woodstream Corp., Lititz. He enjoyed antique markets and looked forward to the annual Auker Yard Sale.

Surviving are his wife: Anita Clippinger-Auker; children: Scott E. Auker and daughter, Cammy (Bruce) Kissinger; all Lititz; two grandchildren; a sister: Fern Marie Eller; brother: Richard Allen (Beverly Adair) Auker, all Rothsville; his cats: Peewee and Lucy.

Two grandchildren; sisters: Ruth Ann Gaus and Betty Jane Slates; and brother: Ronald Lee Auker; predeceased him.

Services were held June 2 at Good Funeral Home, Reamstown. He was interred in Memory Gardens Memorial Park, Ephrata.

Mae S. Metzler, 88, Akron, X-ray tech at ECH, enjoyed traveling and entertaining

Mae S. (Martin) Schneider Metzler, 88, of Akron, passed away Monday, June 1, 2015, at the Mennonite Home, Lancaster.

She was born in Ephrata to the late Aaron G. and Maggie (Sauder) Martin and was the wife of the late Karl Schneider who passed away in 1970 and the late Luke Metzler who passed away in 1995.

Mae was a lifetime member of the Ephrata Mennonite Church, now Alive Church. She was a 1944 graduate of Ephrata High School. Mae taught Sunday school for many years, had been a registered X-ray technician for 33 years at the Ephrata Community Hospital until her retirement in 1991. Mae enjoyed traveling, crocheting, quilting, entertaining friends and family, playing games with her grandchildren, and was always a very upbeat, positive person.

She is survived by three stepdaughters: Lois H. Enloe of Palm Coast, Fla.; Sarah H. Metzler of Lancaster; Naomi H., wife of Kevin Derr of Lebanon; a stepson: Samuel H., husband of Christine Metzler, of Seattle, Wash.; 10 stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother: J. Elvin, husband of Laverne Martin, of Lancaster; three sisters: Arlene Hurst of Lititz; Margaret Martin of Lititz; Lois J., wife of Leon Zimmerman, of Lititz; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister: E. Naomi Martin.

Services were held June 10 at Alive Church, Ephrata, with Rev. Dennis Ernest and Rev. Carl Kniss officiating. Interment took place in the Metzler Mennonite Cemetery.

Jerry B. Laboranti Sr., 65, Bowmansville, died at home June 3, 2015.

He was born in Philadelphia to the late Margaret (Hufnell) and Roman Laboranti Sr.

Surviving is his wife of 43 years: Marie (Spadaro) Laboranti; son: Jerry Laboranti Jr., married to Stefanie (Brown) Laboranti, Robesonia; daughter: Jill, wife of David Marsico, Glenmoore; and grandson: Luca Dominic Marsico, whom he cherished.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated from Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Ephrata, on June 8. There was no public viewing; private commendation and farewell was in All Souls Cemetery, Glenmoore.

Dorace Ellen Ludwig, 88, owned Ephrata Turkey Farms and Hatchery, enjoyed snowmobiling

Dorace Ellen (Faust) Ludwig, 88, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2015, at the Manor House in Seaford, Del.

Dorace was born in Reamstown on Nov. 19, 1926, daughter of the late John C. and Cora (Keeler) Faust.

Over the years, Dorace resided with her husband, Andrew “Buddy” Ludwig Sr. in Reamstown and Ephrata; Fort Myers, Fla.; Milton, Del.; and, most recently, Rehoboth Beach, Del. The Ludwigs had worked together as owners and operators of Ephrata Turkey Farms and Hatchery in Ephrata for many years.

Dorace was a longtime member and Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed spending time at their hunting cabin in Potter County, where they were avid snowmobilers. She also enjoyed golfing, boating, and fishing.

In addition to her parents, Dorace was preceded in death by her husband: Andrew B. Ludwig Sr.; her son: Andrew B. (Andy) Ludwig Jr; and an infant brother.

She is survived by her three granddaughters: Andrea L. Steele (Randy) of Castle Rock, Colo.; Laura L. Moss (Keith) of Newark, Del.; and Susanne L. Truitt (Jamie) of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; seven great-grandchildren: Brandon and Wyatt Steele; Nolan, Ian, and Amelia Moss; and Jase and Jorja Truitt; her daughter-in-law: Gretta Ludwig Wolter of Columbia, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be private.

Joseph A. Weinhold, 40, of Ephrata, passed away Friday, June 5, 2015, at home.

He was born in Ephrata to Joseph W. Weinhold and Gail E. Northeimer.

Joseph served with the U.S. Army Reserve. He loved to hunt and fish. He was employed as a painter.

In addition to his parents, Joseph is survived by his step-mother: Bonnie S. Weinhold; a son: Joe Lee Weinhold; two brothers: Jeremiah Weinhold; and Daniel L., husband of Lisa (Martin) Zimmerman; and two sisters: Angela Weinhold; and Elizabeth A., wife of James R. Pendergast.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Holly Broccolo.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 12, at 7 p.m., at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, with Pastor Chris Mann officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Josephine L. Michener, 79, E-town, nurse’s aide, owner of Michener’s Books, music lover

Josephine L. Michener, 79, of Elizabethtown, passed away June 3, 2015 at Masonic Village.

Born in Oklahoma City, Okla., she was the daughter of the late John and Ruth (Pendarvis) Myers. Josephine was the loving wife of Robert M. Michener Jr. and they would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary in September.

Josephine was a nurse’s aide, and she also volunteered for hospice. She owned a used book store called Michener’s Books. She loved music, watching movies (especially Westerns), and sports. She also loved to read and write stories.

In addition to her husband, Robert, Josephine is survived by three sons: Robert M. Michener III, husband of Donna, of Conestoga; Michael J. Michener, husband of Karen, of Mount Joy; and Dennis L. Michener, husband of Julie, of Ephrata; nine grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren; a brother: Gary Myers; and a sister: Loretta Wilkerson, both of Oklahoma City, Okla.

Josephine was preceded in death by a grandson: Michael Paul.

Services were held June 6 at Byerland Mennonite Church, Willow Street. Interment was in the adjacent cemetery.
