“A gracious, elegant, lovely lady” is how friends describe Jean Herr Gehrett who passed away Nov. 24, 2014 at the age of 91.
Jean was beautiful, competent, intelligent, and witty. With her husband of 67 years, John O. Gehrett, Jean enjoyed living in Hilton Head for 25 years &tstr; first in Long Cove, and most recently at The Cypress.
Jean, raised in Ephrata, was a descendent of the Mentzers, a prominent family in Lancaster County; and of Hans Herr who arrived in The New World in 1708 from Switzerland, settling in Pennsylvania with a charter from William Penn.
Jean graduated with honors from Cornell University, and settled in Huntingdon, with John where she was on the faculty of Juniata College. She excelled at parenting their three daughters, each of whom admired her grace, and her ability to manage life’s ups and downs with a smile while providing loving support. She was a beautiful person inside and out, and it shone through.
Jean was a devoted Christian and served as an Elder in the Providence Presbyterian Church where she worked to strengthen the community and beautify the church. She was a golfer, an avid bridge player, an accomplished cook, and a lifelong bird watcher including chairing the annual Christmas bird count.
Jean and John had a true partnership in their marriage. Those who spent time with them came away inspired to emulate their loving and mutually supportive relationship. For business and philanthropic purposes, they traveled the globe and entertained individuals from around the world. They truly enjoyed life and being together.
Jean is survived by her husband, her daughters and sons-in-law: Barbara and Bruce Brady, Gretchen Gehrett and Larry Zippin, and Marcia and Paul Puzzanghera; and her grandchildren whom she loved dearly: Alex and Christy Puzzanghera, and Evan and Morgan Brady.
The family is grateful to Dr. Patricia North whose extraordinary wisdom and caring helped Jean reach 91 years of age. They thank Home Helpers, who provided outstanding service over several years. They are particularly grateful for Zenda Nathan who, with her quiet competence and winning smile, helped care for Jean.
They also wish to thank Hospice of the Low Country for ensuring that the last few weeks of Jean’s life were comfortable, and that she passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side.
A memorial service will be held at the Providence Presbyterian Church on Dec. 6 at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, PO Box 3827, Bluffton, SC 29910, and Providence Presbyterian Church, 171 Cordillo Parkway, Hilton Head, SC 29928.
