Henry B. Schannauer, 74, Reinholds, owned plumbing business, EASD worker, sports fan

Henry B. Schannauer, 74, of Reinholds, passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, at Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in West Cocalico Township to the late Irvin and Mamie (Bard) Schannauer and was the husband of the late Janet F. (Fry) Schannauer.

He was a member of Swamp Lutheran Church in Reinholds, Ephrata Blue Lodge 665 F. & A.M., the Reading Shrine, the Reamstown AA and the Reinholds VFW Post. He especially enjoyed cooking, his dog Bentley, hunting and fishing in his early years, and was an Eagles and Phillies fan. Henry formerly owned Henry Schannauer Plumbing in Reinholds. He later worked in the maintenance department for the Ephrata School District for 16 years and retired in 2010.

Henry is survived by three brothers: LeRoy, husband of Betty Schannauer of Sinking Spring; Donald, husband of Nancy Schannauer of Newport; and Irvin, husband of Margaret Schannauer of Denver; three sisters: Ella Shirk of Lancaster; Shirley, wife of John Showalter of Denver; and Anna Adams of Ephrata; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son: James Schannauer; three brothers: Harvey B., Ralph B. and John B. Schannauer; and a sister: Arlene Miller.

A viewing will be held Thursday, Oct. 16 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Swamp Lutheran Church, 275 Swamp Church Road, Reinholds with funeral services following with Pastor Dennis L. Trout officiating. Interment will take place in the Swamp Cemetery.

Thelma M. Hornberger, 86, formerly of Ephrata, active in Ephrata VFW, loved jigsaw puzzles

Thelma M. Hornberger, 86, of Lititz, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, 2014, at Luther Acres.

She was born in Terre Hill to the late Paul and Minnie (Fry) Sheaffer and was the wife of the late James K. Hornberger.

She was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church, Ephrata. She was a life member of the Ephrata VFW Post 136, where she was a former Treasurer and Chaplain, a member of the Ephrata Amvets Auxiliary, Friendly Circle, and Terre Hill Alumni Group. She loved spending time in the mountains, working on jigsaw puzzles, and traveling to Florida.

Thelma is survived by two sons: Donald Fox of Akron and James Fox of Lancaster; four daughters: Lisa, wife of Shawn McEllhenney of Ephrata; Susan, wife of Randy Buck of Denver; Carol, wife of Paul Reiner of Apollo; and Linda, wife of Dennis Martin of Ephrata; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and three sisters: June McCoy, Bernice Erb and Judy Capwell, all of Ephrata.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her first husband: Robert S. Fox, who died in 1965; two sisters: Betty Martzall and Margaret Deater; and two brothers: Eugene and Richard Sheaffer.

A service was held Oct. 14 at the Luther Acres Chapel, Lititz, with Chaplain E. Walter Cleckley, Jr. and Pastor Paul Reiner officiating. Interment took place in the Muddy Creek Cemetery.

Malina Jo “Molly” Fry, 34, of Pottsville, passed away Oct. 6 due to a battle with Crohn’s Disease and cancer. Molly worked as a paralegal in Harrisburg and Reading. She was known for using movie quotes in many of her conversations. Molly was a member of Dove Westgate Church, Ephrata, and she loved her Thursday night cell group.

Lois I. Heller, 89, of Lancaster, went to meet her Creator Oct. 8. Lois had been a self-employed professional seamstress. She had also, with her husband, served as a tour host for both Menno and Heritage Travel over the years. She was a long-time and active member of Neffsville Mennonite Church, where she sang in the choir. Lois enjoyed sewing, singing, quilting and traveling. Her daughter, P. Darlene, married to Philip Harnly, lives in Ephrata.

Anna May Koser, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with the Lord Oct. 13 at United Zion Retirement Community, Lititz. She retired at the age of 76 from Elizabethtown College Dining Services. Anna May loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her friends. She enjoyed baking, cooking, knitting, and taking care of her flowers. She was still baking pies and cookies at the age of 93. Her daughter, Virginia (Nix) Hoover, wife of Pastor Glenn A. Hoover, lives in Brownstown.

Mary H. Shirk, 87, of East Earl, died Oct. 7 at her home after declining health. Mary was a homemaker and a member of the Weaverland Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference. Her sister-in-law, Ruth Martin, lives in Terre Hill.

Eva ‘Oma’ Calusic, 87, formerly of Brownstown, ECH cook, enjoyed crocheting, gardening

Eva (Wilpert) Calusic, 87, of Lancaster, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014, at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy, with her loving family by her bedside.

She was born July 4, 1927 and grew up on a farm in Djakovo, Croatia, daughter of the late Adam and Rose (Tornaj) Wilpert. She married Frank Calusic on July 4, 1946 in Klagenfurt, Austria.

Eva and her husband immigrated to Montreal, Canada, in 1949 and then to the United States in 1958. They owned and operated the Original Rudi’s Restaurant in Oak Ridge, N.J., for 30 years. Eva and Frank moved to Brownstown in 1987 and Eva worked as a cook for 10 years at the Ephrata Community Hospital.

She was a member of St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Lancaster, the Jefferson Township Rotary Club, NJ, and was a Paul Harris Fellow. Eva enjoyed crocheting, gardening and cooking, she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Eva is survived by a son: Dr. A. Peter, husband of Dr. Susan Northwall Calusic of Lancaster; a daughter: Rosemary, wife of Timothy P. Search of Lancaster; six grandchildren: Dr. Lisa M. Calusic, wife of Dr. Gregory Wochos of Mequon, Wis.; Carla S. Calusic of Lititz; Dr. Theodore F., husband of Veronica (Gutacker) Search of Conestoga; Dr. Joseph A., husband of Rebecca (Wright) Search of Linglestown; Christopher P. Search of Lancaster; Kathryn R. Search of Lancaster; two great-grandchildren: Eva Gabriella Search and Andrew Timothy Search.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Stradling Funeral Home, 30 N. 9th St., Akron. An additional viewing will be held on Friday, Oct. 17, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., at the St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., with Father David Dannecker and Father Michael Caulkin as Celebrants. Final Commendation and Farewell will follow in the St. Anthony Catholic Cemetery, Lancaster.

Deborah ‘Babes’ Minnich, 59, Denver, worked at Denver Nursing Home, enjoyed the beach

Deborah “Babes” Minnich, 59, of Denver, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2014 at home.

She was the daughter of the late Albert P. and Delores E. (Messner) Harakel and wife of Bryan B. Minnich. Deborah’s first husband, the late Lee A. Groff, passed away April 30, 2008.

Deborah was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Robesonia, and was last employed in the accounting office at Denver Nursing Home. She enjoyed playing cards, baking, cooking, traveling to the beach, and most importantly spending time with family and friends.

In addition to her husband: Bryan; she is survived by one sister: Stephanie, wife of Eric Troutman of Bernville; four brothers: Albert P. Harakel Jr., husband of Debra, of Waterville; Edward B. Harakel, husband of Hope, of Tuscarora; Anthony P. Harakel, husband of Becky, of Bernville; and Andrew P. Harakel, husband of Janell, of Robesonia; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were held Oct. 12 at Paul L. Gravenor Home for Funerals, Ephrata, with Rev. William Weiser officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Terry J. Steffy, 63, Stevens, owned and operated Steffy Masonry, known for generosity

Terry J. Steffy, 63, of Stevens passed away Oct. 10, 2014, at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center after an extended illness.

He was born in Reading to the late Phares and Mary (Stricker) Steffy. He was the husband of Susan Summers-Steffy, with whom he shared 21 years of marriage.

Terry attended Ephrata Church of the Brethren. He was a member of the Association of Builders and Contractors (ABC). He owned and operated Steffy Masonry Inc. for over 25 years. Terry was involved in various activities, participating in various booster clubs involving his children’s sporting activities. He was a member of the NRA; an avid hunter and outdoorsman; a member of the Ducks Unlimited Association; and a movie enthusiast. While in high school, he was a member of the football and wrestling teams at Cocalico High School. He was a Miami Dolphin, Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers fan. The family often laughed that his claim to fame was being the first person to catch the greased pig at the Ephrata Farm Show.

Terry was known as a selfless person; he was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. His heart was big and he believed it was his duty to help his fellow man. Whether someone needed a loan, groceries, oil for heat, or just a ride to work, Terry was there. Terry was known as a family man. He was always committed to his family and extended family. He was known as the man to call whenever someone needed help or advice on how to fix something. It was also extremely important for him to be at every sporting event his children participated in and support his grandchildren in whatever way possible. He spoke with pride about each of his children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: Christopher M., husband of Kendra (Roberts) Steffy of Ephrata; Shannon R., husband of Lisa R. (Pote) Steffy of Denver; a daughter: Paxton J. Steffy at home; five grandsons: Peter M. Steffy, Dameon A. Pote, Cameron A. Steffy, Nicholas H. Steffy, and Brock C. Steffy; four siblings: John, husband of Alberta (DeLong) Steffy of Stevens; Nancy, wife of Lamar Seifrit of Denver; Richard, husband of Kathy (Hartranft) Steffy of Denver; and Thomas Steffy, companion of Rose Feister of Stevens.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Clarence Steffy; and two sisters: Merla Eshleman and Rose Crawford.

A viewing will be held Oct. 16 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ephrata Church of the Brethren, 201 Crescent Ave., Ephrata. An additional viewing will take place Oct. 18 from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church followed by his funeral service at 10 a.m. with Pastors Rob Eshleman and Galen Hackman officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. Please note there will be no viewing or services Oct. 17.

Lowell R. ‘Bob’ Jones, 83, Ephrata, ran BJ Associates consulting firm, trombone player

Lowell R. “Bob” Jones, 83, of Fairmount Homes in Ephrata, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2014, at his residence.

He was born in Hazleton to the late Robert and Aleath (Fritz) Jones.

Bob was a 1949 graduate of Hazleton H.S. Earlier in his career, Bob drove bus for the Philadelphia Transit and Capitol Trailways and worked for Hempt Construction Co. in Camp Hill. Bob retired from High Industries as director of safety and health and then went on to have his own consulting business, BJ Associates. While doing private consulting he was very active with the Voluntary Protection Program for several companies. He served under Gov. Thornburg on the Governor’s Safety Conference and he was the past president of American Society of Safety Engineers, Central PA Chapter. He enjoyed playing trombone in show bands from Pennsylvania to Florida.

Bob is survived by wife: Joanne (Iorio) Jones of Ephrata; son: Robert L., husband of Patricia Jones of Hazleton; daughter: Debbie Rowett of Conyngham; step-son: John, husband of Molly Lally of Litchfield, Conn.; two granddaughters: Sarah (Adam) Shoemaker and Rachel; two step-grandchildren: Jonathan and Erika; and two step-great-grandchildren: Owen and Sam.

A life celebration was held Oct. 13 at Stradling Funeral Home, Ephrata. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Leon L. ‘Tex’ Texter, 80, Denver, bricklayer at Glen-Gery Brick, avid outdoorsman, yard worker

Leon L. “Tex” Texter, 80, Denver, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2014, in his daughter’s Adamstown home under hospice care.

Born in Vinemont, a son of the late Elwood and Helen (Drybread) Texter, he was married to Peggy E. (Bair) Texter for 59 years.

A 1952 Wilson High School graduate and Army veteran, he was a bricklayer and brickmaker for Glen-Gery Brick, Reading. An avid outdoorsman, Tex was a hunter, loved yard work (especially weed whacking) and enjoyed playing cards.

Also surviving is his daughter: “Cookie” Heagy, Adamstown, companion of Keith Kupp; granddaughter: Jamie (Michael) Lutz, Mohnton; and great-grandchildren: Victoria and Tyler Rehm.

He was predeceased by sisters: Marian Texter and Betty Lutz; and his Yorkie, Jackson.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, Oct.18, at 10 a.m. from Cedar Grove Cemetery, Adamstown.

Donferd D. Nussbaum, 78, Akron, was CPA, Lions Club member, enjoyed sports, theater

Donferd D. Nussbaum, 78, of Akron passed away Thursday, Oct. 9, at a nursing facility in New Jersey.

He was born in Dalton, Ohio to the late Noah and Agnes Nussbaum and was the husband to the late Frances M. (Mauger) Nussbaum with whom he shared 46 years of marriage.

Donferd was a graduate of Bluffton College and Bowling Green University going on to become a certified public accountant serving the Reading, and greater Lancaster county area. He was a member of the Akron Mennonite Church and the Akron Lions Club. An avid sports fan, he was a softball player, tennis coach, and golfer. Donferd also enjoyed antiquing, theater, and music.

He is survived by a son: Eric D of Freehold, N.J.; and a daughter: Kristen L.(Nussbaum) Zehr, wife of Merle Zehr, of York Springs; six grandchildren; and two sisters: Hazel (Nussbaum) Himes; and Karen (Nussbaum) Jao, of Taipae, Taiwan.

A memorial service was held Oct. 14 at the Akron Mennonite Church, Akron.

Alverta B. Buch, 97, Doneckers retiree, was 75-year resident of historic Buch farmhouse

Alverta B. Buch, 97, Lititz, was listening to her favorite hymns and surrounded by her family when she passed away peacefully Oct. 1, 2014 at Moravian Manor.

Born in Ephrata Township, she was the daughter of the late Omar and Stella Bingeman Balmer and she shared 59 years of marriage with the late Warren H. Buch.

She was a faithful member of the Middle Creek Church of the Brethren, where she was a former member of the kitchen committee and a Bible school teacher. A wonderful cook, Alverta found enjoyment in gardening, reading, and swimming.

Alverta’s home for 75 years was the beautiful Buch farmhouse, located next to the Warwick High School, where she hosted family gatherings until recent years. A loving mother and homemaker, she also worked at Doneckers from 1969 to 1992 as a sales associate.

Alverta will be lovingly missed by her children: J. Carl Buch, Lititz; Nadine, wife of Gaylord Poling, Lititz; David Buch, husband of Ruth Ann, Ocean City, N.J.; Betty Jean Shenenberger, companion of the late Gene Clair, who passed away in 2013, Lititz; Warren Buch, husband of Sandra, Lancaster; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by a son: Leon; brothers: Cletus and Victor Balmer; and a sister: Anna Lutz.

A service was held Oct. 6 at Middle Creek Church of the Brethren, Lititz.

Donald A. Doster, 64, of New Holland, died Oct. 14 at Hospice & Community Center in Mount Joy after a lengthy battle with cancer and COPD. Don worked as a tow motor operator for 10 years for R.R. Donnelley in Lancaster. He enjoyed working with his computer. His stepdaughter, Stacy Witenski, resides in Denver.

Matthew Lyn Reiff, 32, Butler, N.Y., passed away Oct. 16 at his home on Westbury Road. His grandmother, Margaret Fox, resides in Ephrata.

Enos N. Weaver, 87, of Lincoln Christian Home, Ephrata, formerly of Kinzers, passed away Oct.17, 2014 at Lincoln Christian Home. He was a retired farmer and custodian for Pequea Valley School District. He had also been a driver for the Amish community. His step sister-in-law, Barbara Weaver, lives in Ephrata.

Pauline D. Mateer, 92, Ephrata, food service director for Manheim Twp., civic leader

Pauline D. “Polly” Mateer, 92, formerly of 61 E. Main St., Leola, entered into rest Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014 at Ephrata Manor.

Born in Sinking Spring, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Katie Stricker Daub. She was the loving wife of the late J. Cameron Mateer Jr., who died on Feb. 14, 2009.

Polly was retired from Manheim Township. School District where she was the school food service director. She was a longtime member of Zeltenreich United Church of Christ, New Holland. Polly was the head cook for many years for Upper Leacock War Memorial Association; a member and past Royal Matron of Lancaster Court #70 Order of the Amaranth; past member ABWA Covered Bridge Charter Chapter where she was honored as Woman of the Year. Polly enjoyed Wii bowling and bocci as well as bingo and fellowship with her friends at Ephrata Manor.

The family would like to thank the staff and nurses of Ephrata Manor who lovingly provided care for Polly. She loved them so much.

She will be lovingly missed by her four children: Barbara Ellingsworth, Warren; Jack, husband of Janet Lefever Mateer, Elizabethville; Bonnie, wife of Paul Neff, Brownstown; Beth, wife of Edward Hinkle, Leola; six grandchildren: Lisa (Dean) Huya, Lori Shilling, Col. John Cameron Mateer IV (Kaylin Haywood), Paula (Brian) Trump, Ryan (Cara) Neff and Abby (Graham) Elder; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister: Patricia Eshelman.

Services were held Oct. 17 at Furman Home for Funerals, Leola. Interment was in Zeltenreich Reformed Church Cemetery, New Holland.

Paul F. Miller, Jr., 65, Reinholds, retired police officer, veteran, fire co. volunteer, liked cars

Paul F. Miller, Jr., 65, of Reinholds, entered into rest Monday, Oct. 13, 2014, at home under hospice care, after a lengthy courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Reading to Paul F. and Emma (Zieber) Miller, and was the former husband of Tracy (Beamesderfer) Miller.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Congregational Church in Reamstown, Band of Brothers of the Church, Fraternal Order of Police, and served as a volunteer with the West Lawn and Mohnton fire departments, and Gov. Mifflin Ambulance Services. Paul was a fan of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Nascar, and the Phillies. He enjoyed classic cars, and following his daughters’ college teams.

Paul was a graduate of the Reading High School class of 1967 and the Reading Police Academy. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War.

Paul worked as a police officer for Cumru Township, retiring in June 2013. He formerly served with the Mohnton Police Department and earlier worked as a mechanic for Lindgren Chrysler Plymouth for 19 years.

Paul is survived by two daughters: Heather L. and Alysha R. Miller, both of Reinholds; two brothers: Michael David, husband of Tammy Miller of Lenhartsville; and David Michael, husband of Holly Miller of Mohnton; and two sisters: Vickie, wife of Charles Lavigna of Sinking Spring; and Diane, wife of Robert Adams of Womelsdorf.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Scott P. Miller; and a sister: Donna Puksar.

Services were held Oct. 18 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Congregational Church, Reamstown, with pastor, Rev. Kirk R. Marks officiating. Full honors will be presented by the Fraternal Order of Police. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Loretta A. Kakas, 60, Denver, ECH housekeeper, enjoyed painting ceramics

Loretta A. Kakas, 60, Denver, died Oct. 13, 2014, in Hershey Medical Center.

Born in Bristol, a daughter of the late Arthur Di Emidio and Agnes (Lahey) Di Emidio Nieves, she was married to Dennis R. Kakas for 34 years.

A member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Ephrata, she was an outgoing person and enjoyed painting ceramics. Loretta was employed by Ephrata Community Hospital in housekeeping and was also a homecare provider. She most recently worked at Tel Hai Retirement Community.

Also surviving are children: Phillip M. (Jessica) Kakas, Blakesley; and Jennifer S. Cook, Denver; granddaughter: Andreanna Kakas; brother: Arthur Di Emidio, Bristol; and sisters: Lena Erb, Denver; Charlotte Johnson, Kathy Nieves, Terri Torres, and Tina Wilson, all of Bristol.

A Memorial Christian Prayer Service will be held from Good Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, Reamstown, on Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m. There will be no public viewing. Private inurnment will follow Memory Gardens, Ephrata.

Robert W. Stryker, 90, of Ephrata and formerly of Phoenixville, passed away Oct. 13, 2014, at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy.

He was the husband of Marjorie Shell Stryker for over 64 years. Born in Tyrone, he was the son of the late Elmer W. and Anna Heeter Stryker.

Robert served in the US Army during WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of Penn State University. He was retired from the Phelps School in Malvern. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was president of the Tri State Chapter of 25th Infantry Division.

He is survived by his wife; a daughter: Robin Stryker of Lititz; a son: Rick Stryker of Parkesburg; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Drop In on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the home of his daughter, Robin, 37 Skyview Lane, Lititz.

Grace B. Redcay, 92, Ephrata, retired from Quinlan Pretzels, square dance figure caller

Grace B. Redcay, 92, of Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, at Wyomissing Nursing and Rehab Center.

She was born in Boyertown to Amos and Edna (Benfield) Hartman, and was the wife of the late Harold W. Redcay, who died in 2006.

She enjoyed old-time country music and square dancing, for which she and her husband were figure callers. Grace worked for Cinderella Knitting Mills in the earlier years, and retired from Quinlan Pretzels.

Grace is survived by three children: Ray R., husband of Judith V. (Peters) Redcay of Ephrata; Fern F. Sonon of Hamburg; and Harold W. Redcay Jr. of Bull Head City, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a step-sister: Mildred Reber of Wernersville; and a step-brother: Gary Hartman of Reading.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son: Eugene W. Redcay; a daughter: Evelyn M. Redcay; a brother; a step-brother; two step-sisters: Alice Conrad and Mary Haas; and multiple other step-sisters, nephews and nieces.

Services were held Oct. 21 at Roseboro Stradling Funeral, Denver, with Pastor Tim Craven officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant View Cemetery.

Leroy R. Glick, 91, Denver, worked for Clean Burn, retired farmer, helped drive Amish

Leroy R. Glick, 91, of Denver, formerly of White Horse, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014.

He was the husband of Aary E. Zook Glick and would have celebrated 70 years of marriage on November of this year. Born in Gap, he was the son of the late David K. and Dora Riehl Glick.

Leroy was a member of the Gap View Mennonite Church. He was a retired farmer, carpenter, and also worked at Clean Burn in Leola. He volunteered with the White Horse Fire Company and provided transportation for the Amish community.

In addition to his wife, Leroy is survived by eight children: Sarah, wife of Emanuel Riehl of Kinzer; Daniel, husband of Elsie Lantz Glick of Gordonville; Fannie, wife of Thomas Dobbs of Bird-in-Hand; Kate, wife of Elmer Stoltzfus of Lancaster; Steven, husband of Kimberly Martin Glick of New Holland; Ruthie, wife of Virgil Zook of New Holland; Linda, wife of Brian Roggie of Bowmansville; and Lydiann, wife of Ted Zeiset of Denver, with whom he resided; 24 grandchildren; 21 great- grandchildren; and sister: Annie Beiler of Gap.

He was preceded in death by a stillborn daughter; three grandchildren: Daryn Glick, Lorraine Riehl Besanson and Christopher Stoltzfus; five brothers; and five sisters.

The funeral service was held at the Pequea Amish Mennonite Church Oct. 18 with Pastors Mervin Fisher, Amos King, and John Glick officiating. Interment was in the Buena Vista Amish Cemetery.

Shirley L. Ocker, 85, formerly of Ephrata, worked at EHS cafeteria, enjoyed outdoors

Shirley L. Ocker, 85, a resident of Luther Acres and formerly of Akron and Ephrata, passed away Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014 at Lancaster General Hospital.

Her husband, the late John A. Ocker, passed away Sept. 29, 2012. Shirley was born in Lincoln, daughter of the late Lester S. and Gertrude (Peiffer) Phillips.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ephrata and was retired from the former Ephrata Shoe Co. and Ephrata High School cafeteria. Shirley was a member of Cocalico Post 3376 VFW Auxiliary and enjoyed camping, fishing, and traveling.

Surviving are two sons: Dennis L. Ocker, husband of Rebecca, of Lititz; and Jerome R. Ocker, husband of Laura, of King of Prussia; five grandchildren: Adam, Kathleen, Caleb, Daniel, and Zachary; one great-granddaughter: Autumn; one sister: Charmagne, wife of Lamont Koehler of York, and a brother: Gerald O. Phillips, husband of Joanne, of Reamstown.

In addition to her husband and parents, Shirley was preceded in death by two sisters: Fay D. Reddig and Justine Geyer; and one brother: Reed Phillips.

Friends will be received at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata, from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. with the Reverend Henry E. Herbener officiating. Place of interment will be Memory Gardens, E. Cocalico Township.

Martha M. Hoover, 40, of Leola, passed away Monday, Oct. 20, 2014, at her residence.

She was born in Ephrata to Norman and Esther E. (Martin) Hoover of Leola.

Martha attended Groffdale Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference).

In addition to her parents, she is survived by six brothers: Nelson M., husband of Susan (Leid) Hoover of Shippensburg; Aaron M., husband of Marian (Shirk) Hoover of Charles City, Iowa; Walter M. Hoover, at home; Stevie M. Hoover, at home; Norman M., husband of Dorcas (Nolt) Hoover, of Leola; Elmer M. Hoover, of Leola; and two sisters: Alice M., wife of Mervin Zimmerman of Owen, Wis.; and Esther M. Hoover, of Leola.

William L. Stauffer, 87, Brownstown, former Ephrata Borough lineman, Navy veteran

William L. Stauffer, 87, formerly of Brownstown, passed away Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, at Ephrata Manor.

He was born in Brownstown to the late Jacob and Mary (Wolf) Stauffer and was the husband of the late Jeanne M. (Browne) Stauffer for 62 years before her passing in 2009.

Bill was a member of the Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ephrata, a 13-year member of West Earl Lions Club and served in the US Navy aboard the USS Saturn in 1945 and 1946. He had worked as an electrical construction supervisor with PP&L, an electrician for St. Joseph Hospital and was also a lineman for the Ephrata Borough. Bill was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved his family. His family and many friends will always remember him as a loving, hard working man who never failed to lend a hand to those in need. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by three children: William L. Jr., husband of Sharon Carmel (Rill) Stauffer of Williamsburg, Va.; Mary Elizabeth (Betsy), wife of Kenneth J. MacDonald of Brownstown; Robert H., husband of Vickie L. (Sensenig) Stauffer of Akron; seven grandchildren: Sara Stauffer Stubbert, William Justin Stauffer, Kami Stauffer Boulter, Amy Elizabeth MacDonald-Mellish, Karen Elizabeth Przybylski, Christopher Robert Stauffer, and Jennifer Lynette Pulver; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers: Philip, husband of Gail (Eichelberger) Stauffer of Leola; Kenneth, husband of Louise (Ditzler) Stauffer of Harrisburg; James, husband of Carleen Stauffer of Anderson, S.C.; a sister: Mary Ann, wife of Robert Crockett of Boston, Mass.; and a sister-in-law: Betsy Stauffer of Lititz.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Jacob Stauffer and J. Thomas Stauffer.

A private graveside service will be held at the Trumbauer Memorial Cemetery, Leola.
