Eleanor Good, 95, Lititz, worked at Brecknock school cafeteria, BMC member

Eleanor Good, 95, wife of the late Isaac G. Good, entered into eternal rest, peace and joy to forever be with her Savior Jesus Christ, Aug. 5, 2014 at Landis Homes, Lititz, where she lived for 20 years.

Eleanor enjoyed her work at Brecknock School cafeteria for many years. She was a faithful member of Bowmansville Mennonite Church all her life. She will be missed by her children, grandchildren, many family members, and friends.

She is survived by a daughter: Jeanette and husband Jim Oberholtzer; sons: Warren and wife Deb Good and Isaac Ray Good and a daughter-in-law Sonia Good. Also surviving are six grandchildren: Debra Cohick, Rick Good, Tina Snyder, Gina Burkhart, Trace Oberholtzer, and Shawn Good; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers: James Burkhart and Wilmer Burkhart; and two sisters-in-law: Ruth Burkhart and Violet Good.

She was preceded in death by a son: Mervin Good; daughter-in-law: Carolyn Good; grandchild; a sister: Irene Fulmer; and a brother: John Burkhart.

Services were held Aug. 8 at Landis Homes West Bethany Chapel.

Thanks to all the workers at Landis Homes and Hospice for the wonderful love and care they gave to Eleanor these last couple of months. The family won’t soon forget these kind deeds.

Guy Franklin Balenzano Ephrata H.S. grad, worked for PPL, D&E, transported IU 13 students

Guy Franklin Balenzano, born Sept. 12, 1926 in Middletown, passed away Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014.

He was the son of the late Katherine Echenrod and Guy Franklin Balenzano. Frank was one of four children, having three sisters: Martha Needles, Mary Burkholder, and Eleanor Layman, all from the Ephrata/Reamstown area.

He moved to Ephrata at age five, and graduated from Ephrata High School. Upon graduation, he entered the Army Air Corp. Once the war ended, he was sent home to Pennsylvania. Frank worked at PPL, then D&E Telephone Co. of Ephrata, before retiring from Lanco Knitwear. He then worked part-time at Weary’s Transportation Co., and at Boyd Transportation as a bus aide for IU 13 students.

Frank married Viola Batsch from Groffdale, on April 20, 1957. They were married for 57 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a stepson: Mike Frymyer, of Georgia; four grandkids: Jerome Frymyer, Haley McGuigan, Molly McGuigan, and Samantha Thomason.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter: Debra McGuigan.

A viewing will take place on Thursday, August 14, 2014, from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Stradling Funeral Home, 201 Church Ave., Ephrata.

Robert J. Alexander Sr., 81, of Marietta, passed away Aug. 4 at Hospice and Community Care Bob Fryer and Family Center. Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He served as the Leacock Township Supervisor for 18 years. His daughter, Sue Mercer, wife of Matthew, resides in Terre Hill.

Thomas L. “Tom” Cope, 75, of Bethel, and formerly of Manheim, passed away unexpectedly at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital Aug. 9, after enjoying one final, wonderful family vacation to Bethany Beach, Del. Born in Ephrata, he was the former President and CEO of the John F. Cope Co. Inc. (Cope’s Corn), a company started by his great grandfather 104 years ago. He was a pilot for Pan American Airways in the 60s and 70s.

Isaac Shelly Ginder, 87, of Lititz, passed away Aug. 4 Hospice & Community Care, Mt. Joy. Isaac was a member of the Word of Life Mennonite Church, Lititz. He was a self-employed farmer, and had worked at New Holland Planing Mill and also in the maintenance department at Oregon Dairy. A daughter, Janet, wife of Gerald Weaver, lives in Ephrata.

Marian S. Yoder, 89, of Gap, passed away Aug. 8. In the past Marian baked bread for and worked at Stoltzfus Meat Market. Along with her late husband she volunteered at Cove Valley Christian Youth Camp of Mercersburg. She was an avid bird watcher and a member of the Audubon Society. Her sister, Anna Mary Stoltzfus, resides in Ephrata.

Fred R. Weber, 83, Akron civic leader

Fred R. Weber, 83, formerly of Akron, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014 at Ephrata Manor surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in West Reading on Jan. 24, 1931 to the late Fred and Laura (Hubscher) Weber.

Fred spent his childhood in Ephrata and is a 1949 Ephrata High School graduate. Fred retired from Wohlsen’s Construction Company with 39 years in accounting and office support services. He won the Herman F. Wohlsen Award in 1980. He was a member of and sang in the choir at Bethany United Church of Christ, Ephrata.

Fred was a Naval Air Force Veteran during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1953 as Airman Third Class.

Service to his community was important as he was a lifetime Akron Lions Club member and served as treasurer for 27 years. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Award in 1991. Fred was involved in Civil Defense, Jaycees, and Ephrata Borough Special Police. Fred joined the Ephrata Pioneer Fire Police in 1974. He received a 25 year service award in 1999.

Fred’s greatest joy was the love of his family and spending time with them. He traveled, collected rock specimens, attended concerts and programs, took pictures, celebrated Holidays, helped with the Akron Lions’ stand at the Ephrata Farm Show and spent time outdoors working in his yard.

He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years: Phyllis J. Ash Weber; two daughters: Patti Jo, wife of David Hibshman of Palmyra, Peggy Anne, wife of Donald Grabowski of Elizabethtown; one son: Michael Fred Weber and his wife, Jane of Brookeville, Md.; one sister: Ruth, wife of the late Dr. J. Walter High; nine grandchildren: Eric Hibshman and his wife, Amy, Jeff Hibshman and his wife, Jennie, Paul, Steven and Ben Grabowski, Justin Weber and his wife Heather, Christian, Laura and Meleny Weber; one great-granddaughter: Morgan Leah Hibshman; and one great-grandson: Logan David Hibshman.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 11 a.m. at Bethany United Church of Christ, 140 E. Main St., Ephrata, with the Reverend William LaSalle officiating. Friends will be received in Zwingli Hall after the service. Fred’s interment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Andrey I. Zakharov, 88, Ephrata, preacher, member of BGFC, played Russian accordion

Andrey I. Zakharov, 88, of Ephrata, went to be with God Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, at his residence.

He was born in Oryol, Russia, to the late Ivan and Anna (Deyeva) Zakharov and was the husband of the late Yuliya M. Shatilenko who passed away in 2008.

Andrey was a member of Brickerville Grace Fellowship Church, Lititz. He enjoyed music, listening to CDs, played the garmoshka (Russian accordion), reading books, was a preacher, loved his family and God. He was the best father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Andrey is survived by six sons: Alexander, wife of Alla Zakharov; Pavel, husband of Vera Zakharov; Victor, husband of Nadya Zakharov; Andrey, husband of Olga Zakharov; Michael, husband of Hilda Zakharov; Vladimir, husband of Yelena Zakharov; six daughters: Natalya, wife of Peter Patrushev; Tanya, wife of Eugene Starikov; Vera, wife of Alexander Subbotin; Yelena, wife of Oleg Novikov; Nadya, wife of Yuriy Kharin; Olga, wife of Anatoly Freze; a daughter-in-law: Tanya Zakharov; 36 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

In addition to his wife and parents; he was preceded in death by a son: Ivan Zakharov.

His funeral was held Aug. 20 at Brickerville Grace Fellowship Church. Interment took place in the Mt. Zion Evangelical Cemetery.

George H. Lester, 71, New Holland, mailman, Vietnam vet, enjoyed fishing, Phillies fan

George H. Lester, 71, of New Holland, died peacefully surrounded by his family Friday, Aug. 15, 2014 at Hospice & Community Care in Mount Joy.

Born in Charlottesville, Va., he was the son of the late Homer Lee and Elizabeth (Main) Lester.

He worked from 1982 to 2006 as a postal carrier. During the Vietnam War he served in the US Army.

He was a member of the New Holland American Legion and a former member of the Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed fishing, horse racing, the Phillies, Dallas Cowboys, and Tennessee Titans.

Surviving are two sons: Michael Lester of Ephrata, and Zachary Lester of East Earl; a granddaughter: Aubrey Lester; and a brother: James “Pete” Lester of Denver.

Preceding him in death is a son: George H. Lester, Jr.; and a sister: Dorothy Weller.

A graveside service was held Aug. 21 at Ranck’s United Methodist Cemetery.

Grace Porter Hand, 93, Denver, N.J. Bell employee, enjoyed shore trips and gardening

Grace (Holman) Porter Hand, 93, of Denver, passed away at the Hospice & Community Care Mt. Joy Inpatient Unit April 25, 2014.

Born in Trenton, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Maisie Lee (Fowler) Holman. She was the wife of the late Donald F. Hand and formerly the wife of the late William W. Porter of Hamilton, N.J.

Grace worked at New Jersey Bell Telephone for many years before retiring in 1965. She loved vacationing at the Jersey Shore with her late sister-in-law every year for over 30 years. Her other interests included many camping trips, cruises, playing cards and walking with her senior friends. Grace loved feeding birds and flower gardening in her yard. Her travels included trips to Germany, Australia, Mexico, Canada, and most of the USA.

Grace was preceded in death by her brother: Clarence “Chick” Holman; her sisters-in-law: Ursula “Uli” Holman, and Shirley Holman; her step-son: Tom Hand; and her grandson: Donald Hand.

She is survived by a brother: Wesley Holman of Columbus, N.J.; her four children: Harry Porter (Pam) of Santa Clara, Calif.; James Porter (Janice) of Pensacola, Fla.; Virginia Faber-Castell (Andreas) of Sydney, Australia; and step-daughter Donna Thorn (Thomas) of Tom’s River, N.J. Grace also leaves behind 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank Grace’s devoted caregivers from Home Instead Senior Care and Hospice and Community Care of Mt. Joy.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver, with Rev. Timothy L. Craven officiating. There will be a time of greeting with the family and a luncheon at Weaver’s Market (banquet facility), corner of Routes 272 and 897, Adamstown, immediately following the service.

Robert M. Governanti, 56, Ephrata, USAF vet, worked for Draeger Medical, loved gadgets

Robert M. (Bob) Governanti, 56, of Ephrata, passed away Thursday, Aug. 14 at his home surrounded by his loving family and friends.

Born in New York City, he was the son of Salvatore (deceased) and Kathleen Governanti.

He is survived by his loving wife: Crista; and their devoted children: Michael and Elizabeth. Other family members include: his sister Linda and her husband Gary Garbarino; his four brothers: Gary and his wife Linda, Richard and his wife Bonnie, Ronald and his wife Sayo, and Daniel and his wife Diana. He is also survived by: Rex and his wife Sally Fuller, Gregory and his wife Becky Fuller, Douglas and his wife Julie Fuller, and Patrick and his wife Piper Fuller. Robert had 24 nieces and nephews, scores of aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends and the two whom he considered his own (they know who they are), all of whom celebrate his life and mourn his passing.

Robert and Crista married on May 22, 1993 in Bellevue, Neb., where they raised their family until relocating to Ephrata. He excelled there in his career as a systems specialist with Draeger Medical. Robert served in the United States Air Force. He was a proud veteran and patriot. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Robert was an avid football fan and dearly loved spending time with his family and friends. He also held numerous electronic and technical certifications and loved gadgets.

Mass was held Aug. 20 at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, Ephrata. Interment was held privately by the immediate family.

Kenneth L. Kulp, Sr., 73, Ephrata, Diamond Spring driver, loved roller coasters

Kenneth L. Kulp, Sr., 73, of Ephrata, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014 at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.

His wife, the late Betty J. Kulp, passed away Feb. 29, 2012.

Kenneth was born in Ephrata and worked as a route driver for the former Ephrata Diamond Spring Water Company from 1956 to 1996. He attended Ephrata Seventh Day Adventist Church and loved roller coasters and all Philadelphia sports teams.

Kenneth is survived by a daughter: Gwen, wife of Keith Cummings of Ephrata; three sons: Kenneth L. Kulp, Jr. of Napa Valley, Calif., Michael A. Kulp, husband of Tonya, of Napa Valley, Calif., and Andrew Scott Kulp III of Pottsville; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother: Galen U. Kulp, husband of Freda, of Ephrata; and his sister: Ruth A., wife of Marvin Fox, of Clay.

In addition to his wife, Betty, Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents: Andrew S. and Mary E. (Martzall) Kulp: and two brothers: Robert A. and Richard L. Kulp.

Services were held Aug. 18 at the Ephrata Seventh Day Adventist Church, Ephrata, with Elder Greg Nagley officiating. Place of interment will be Middle Creek Brethren Cemetery, Ephrata Township.

Clair Royer Hurst, 91, worked for Warren’s Shoes, attended ECOB, avid gardener

Clair Royer Hurst, 91, formerly of Akron and Brethren Village, passed away peacefully Aug. 14, 2014 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy.

Born on July 19, 1923 in Ephrata to the late Martin and Elnora (Royer) Hurst, Clair was the loving husband of 62½ years of marriage to Anna Mary (Patrick) Hurst, who passed away Oct. 29, 2013.

A graduate of Ephrata High School’s Class of 1941, Clair was subsequently employed at Warren’s Shoes in Ephrata, and later J.W. Peach’s & Company Fine Family Footwear in Brownstown. During World War II, he worked in civilian public service.

A lifelong member of the Ephrata Church of the Brethren (Ephrata), Clair served as a deacon and treasurer for many years. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, and gardening, especially tending his flower gardens at home in Akron.

Clair is survived by two sons: Michael, of Ephrata, and Bryan, of Manheim. Michael Hurst is married to Gwen. They have three children: Kelsey, Kaitlyn (both at home), and Ramona, who is married to Brent Martin. Ramona and Brent reside in Reamstown with their daughter Alexis. Bryan Hurst is married to Joyce. They have three children: Meredith, Austin (both at home), and Erika, who is married to Ashley Martin. Erika and Ashley reside in Penryn, with their son Hunter. Also surviving is one brother: Cletus, and his wife Faye; and four sisters-in-law: Virginia Patrick (Hershey), Sarah Nealy (Newville), Dorothy Seibert (Hummelstown), Eleanor and husband Harvey (Harrisburg).

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Earl and Wilmer.

Services were held Aug. 19 at Ephrata Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Rob Eshelman officiating. Interment was in the Middle Creek Brethren Cemetery.

Jeffrey S. Fortna, 52, Ephrata grad, active in Lions Club, worked at Pennfield Feeds

Jeffrey S. Fortna, 52, of 952 Spoon Ave., Landisville, died Tuesday at Hospice & Community Care, Mt. Joy, following an illness of five months.

He was the husband of Jennie Grunden Fortna. They celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary on June 21. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Pat Strohl Fortna of Lancaster, and the late Ronald Fortna.

Jeff was the business mdanager and part owner of Little’s Distributorship in Columbia. He was previously employed at Pennfield Feeds Corp. for 23 years. He was a member of the Hempfield United Methodist church. Jeff was involved in various Church activities. He was a graduate of Ephrata High School Class of 1980 and a Graduate of Central Penn Business School Class of 1982. He was the president of the Columbia Lion’s Club and a Melvin Jones Fellow. He was an integral part in the Mardi Gras Parade, the Lion’s Club Christmas Basket Program, the Lion’s Club Blood Drive and many other Lion’s Club activities.

He was treasurer and membership Chairman of the State PA Sports Hall of Fame and was membership chairman for the Susquehanna Valley Chapter PA Sports Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Columbia/Middletown Elks Lodge #1074, Chickies Rock Lodge #307 Loyal Order of the Moose, the Susquehanna Fire Company, Red Rose Memorial Post #2435 VFW, York County Meat Dealers Association, Columbia Fraternal Association, Foresters Of America, Red Rose Lodge #16 Fraternal Order of Police and the Susquehanna Beneficial and Social Association of Marietta. He went out of his way to help others.

Surviving, besides his wife and mother, are two sons: Jared S. Fortna of Landisville, and John F. Fortna of Lancaster; daughter: Jessika, wife of Randy Ross II of Lancaster; sister: Susan R., wife of Gene Fasnacht of Lancaster; nephew: Tyler C. Fasnacht of Lancaster; and a brother-in-law: John E. “Ginger,” husband of Cheryl Grunden of Wrightsville.

Services were held at Hempfield United Methodist Church, Lancaster, on Aug. 16, with Rev. Dr. Keith Braucher and Rev. Bruce Lefever officiating. Interment followed in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Cecil Ira Nye, 84, formerly of Ephrata, 50-year Mason, owned a Harley franchise

Cecil Ira Nye, 84, died Aug. 17, 2014 at Masonic Village, Elizabethtown.

A former resident of Ephrata, he was born March 27, 1930 in Mongul, to the late Ira and Dorothy Nye.

He was a graduate of Fannett Township High School, served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1956, owned a Harley Davidson Franchise 1963 to 1970, was employed by Penelec, and a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge.

He is survived by Rhoda (Thomas) Nye, wife of 64 years; a sister: Mary Woodwell of Florida; a son: Edward Nye and his wife Theresa, Denver; daughter: JoAn, Phoenixville; five grandchildren: Robert Nye, Jennifer (Nye) Brown, Tyler Fichthorn, Heather (Darby) Stube, Kathryn (Darby) Drake; and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister: Naomi; and a granddaughter: Serena Nye.

Private services for family will be held.

Marion D. Colonell, 96, long-time ECH director of nursing

Major Marion D. Sweigart Colonell, 96, formerly a long-time resident of Ephrata, passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Manheim, where she resided.

Her husband, the late Arthur W. Colonell, passed away April 25, 1996. Born in Ephrata Township, Marion was a daughter of the late Walter and Minnie Sweigart.

She was a lifetime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ephrata. Marion graduated from Ephrata High School in 1936 and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in 1940. After graduating from St. Joseph, she stayed on as an instructor.

Marion served as a nurse in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1964. She was Chief of Nursing at the 76th Field Hospital in Darmsted, Germany during World War II, was Assistant Director of the 24th Field Evacuation Hospital during the Korean War, and also served in Italy and Japan. Stateside, Marion was Chief of Nursing at the USMA Hospital in West Point, N.Y., Valley Forge Hospital, Fort Chaffee Hospital, Ark., Oliver General Hospital, Ga., and Brooks Hospital, Texas.

Marion retired from the Army as a Major and earned the U.S. Army Meritorious Service Award with Oak Leaf Cluster.

After her military service, Marion returned to Ephrata and was employed as the Director of Nursing at Ephrata Community Hospital from 1968 to 1984. Marion was a member of the PA State Nurses Association, American Nurses Association, Retired U.S. Army Officers Association, and a Lifetime Member of Cloister Post 429 American Legion in Ephrata.

Marion is survived by one sister: Reba D. Sweigart of Mount Joy; two nephews: J. Craig Steinmetz (Patricia Kauffman) of Manheim, and Randy Sweigart of N.C.; four nieces: Madolin D. Heisey (James Heisey) of Mount Joy, Ann S. Nolt (Terry Nolt) of Akron, Kay Sweigart and Jan Hamil of Ga.; 15 great-nieces and nephews; and 17 great-great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents; Marion was preceded in death by one sister: Hazel L. Steinmetz; and one brother; Russell J. Sweigart.

Marion’s family wishes to thank the staff of Pleasant View Nursing Home for providing her with a home, extended family, and loving care for the past 10 years.

Services were held Aug. 21 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Ephrata, with Rev. Henry E. Herbener officiating. Place of interment was Cedar Hill Cemetery, Ephrata.

Nancy F. Guyton, former advertising director at Ephrata Review

Nancy F. Guyton of Lititz, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2014 at Luther Acres, Lititz.

Nancy was born in Lititz on April 28, 1934 to the late Theodore and Naomi Frey. Nancy is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Lester H. Guyton Sr. they married on March 17, 1959.

Nancy graduated from Rothsville High School in 1953. She worked for Donecker’s and the Ephrata Review, where she served as advertising director. Nancy loved spending time with her family, traveling, and finding treasures. She was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Parish.

Nancy is survived by two children, daughter: Debra Guyton Rinier; and son: Lester H. Guyton Jr. husband of Lori J. Guyton, of Lititz; grandchildren: Chad MacLaren, Chris MacLaren and wife Taryn MacLaren, Megan Guyton and fiance Thomas Cozze, Mandi Schucker and husband Christopher Schucker, Joshua H. Guyton, Katie Scruton and Kyle Scruton; three great-grandchildren, Maddison MacLaren, Grace Cozze and Anthony MacLaren, and a baby Schucker due Jan. 2015. Also surviving are sisters: Peggy Ruhl (Bob) and Marion Bear (Vernon).

She was preceded in death by a sister: Reba Frey.

Services will be private.

Harold R. “Bob” Gehman, 81, formerly of New Holland, died Aug. 20 at Masonic Village of Elizabethtown. Robert worked for Conestoga Telephone, Birdsboro, for 45 years, retiring in 1997. He also had been a member of the Caernarvon Township Police Department, Lancaster County, for 30 years retiring in 1995. He was a member Ephrata Lodge F & A.M. #665, Ephrata Lodge B.P.O.E. #1933 and Telephone Pioneers. His daughter, Anne L., married to Randy High, lives in Ephrata.

Nancy A. Hershey, 79, of Manheim, was welcomed into the arms of Jesus after a brief illness Aug. 18. Nancy worked beside her husband as a partner in the family farm in Rapho Township for over 50 years. Nancy’s life-long passion was her family. Her daughter, Shirley A., wife of Paul E. Horning, lives in Stevens.

Sandra M. (Gallant) Reich, 67, of Lititz, died Aug. 22 at Zerbe Sisters Nursing Home. She attended LCBC in Manheim and enjoyed bowling, playing cards, and spending time with her grandchildren. A stepson, Anthony Reich, resides in Ephrata.


Kenneth James Sheehan, 65, Ephrata, machinist at Case New Holland, model train enthusiast

Kenneth James Sheehan, 65, of Ephrata, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2014, at the Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in Spangler to the late Elmer and Jane (Conrad) Sheehan and was the husband of Donna (Brown) Sheehan, with whom he shared 41 years of marriage.

Ken was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Ephrata. He was a 1966 graduate of Ephrata High School and retired from Case New Holland as a machinist. Ken was a member of the Father Daley Council #4191 Knights of Columbus, Ephrata AmVets Post #136, a life member of the Akron Volunteer Fire Company and life member of the Akron Fire Police. He served his country in the US Navy during Vietnam. He enjoyed woodworking and model trains.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons: Thomas D., husband of Kimberly (Bloom) Sheehan of New Holland, J. Anthony, husband of Angela (Witwer) Sheehan of Ephrata, Timothy A., husband of Gina (Malpeli) Sheehan of Sinking Spring; seven grandchildren: Hayley, Reagan, Madelyn, Victoria, Logan, Cody and Patrick Sheehan; and a sister: Susan Sheehan of Ephrata.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Thomas Sheehan; and a sister: Janet Wanner.

Services were held Aug. 22 at Our Mother Of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Ephrata. Final Commendation and Farewell followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery with full military honors accorded.

Jack S. Gerhart, 88, Lancaster, Navy veteran, former VP of LNP, antiques dealer

Jack S. Gerhart, of Lancaster, died Aug. 19, 2014 at Hospice & Community Care.

He was 88 years of age, the son of Sherman N. Gerhart and Catherine Scherer Gerhart. He and his wife, Bernice Krentz Gerhart, celebrated 66 years of marriage this past year.

Surviving is one son: James M. Gerhart and wife Nancy F. of Lancaster; and two daughters: Margaret L. Gerhart of Lititz and Kathryn A. Gerhart, wife of George J. Essif, of Lancaster. Also surviving are five grand-daughters; Becky L. Gerhart, Columbus, Ohio; Jamie L. , wife of Travis Williams, Baltimore, Md; Megan L. McDonald, Lancaster; Keely M. McDonald, Paris, France; and Darcy L. McDonald, Baltimore, Md.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Sherman L. Gerhart; and a sister: Minerva U. Neiss.

Jack served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 on a destroyer and mine-sweeper in both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

He retired from Lancaster Newspapers in 1990 as vice president and secretary and member of the board of directors. His responsibilities included, Steinman Holdings, Inc., Lancaster Farming, Inc., Lancaster County Weeklies, Inc., Intelligencer Printing Co., Delmarva Broadcasting Co., and Steinman Park Restaurant, Inc. He also served as president and CEO of the Steinman Management Co. and trustee of J. F. Steinman and James Hale Steinman Foundation.

He was a graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School and Lancaster Business College. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and past Council member. He was a member of Conestoga Country Club and past member of the Hamilton Club, Sertoma Club and served on the board of directors of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation. He was past treasurer of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce, past treasurer of the American Red Cross, Lancaster Chapter and past member of the Board of Directors of Lancaster Meals On Wheels. Also, he was past president of Lancaster Chapter of Institute of Management Accountants, member of the board of directors of Institute of Newspaper Controllers and the Pennsylvania Economy League.

Jack and his wife were in the antique business for 20 years under the name The Country Look. He was a long-time supporter of Lancaster Farmland Trust and its preservation of our beautiful Lancaster County farms.

Services were held Aug. 23 at Kearney A. Snyder Funeral Home, Lancaster. Interment was private and held at the convenience of the family in the Millersville Mennonite Cemetery.

Ethel Kirkpatrick Sikorsky, 89, Akron, Bible Fellowship Church founding member, honored painter

Ethel Weinhold Kirkpatrick Sikorsky, 89, of Akron, went home to her glory in heaven Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014 at Maple Farm Nursing Center.

She was the wife of the late Arthur F. Kirkpatrick and Alexander Sikorsky. Ethel was born in Fivepointville, daughter of the late Paul L. and Barbara (Wenger) Weinhold.

She was known as a very sweet lady who loved the Lord and was a founding member of Bible Fellowship Church of Ephrata. Ethel was also an award-winning painter at local fairs.

She is survived by her daughter: Barbara, wife of Edward Kreiter, Lititz; daughter-in-law: Sandy, wife of the late Barry Kirkpatrick; grandchildren: Shawn Kirkpatrick, husband of Sally (Knauer), Mathew Kirkpatrick, husband of Tanya (Dannick), Kristopher Mull, husband of Krista (Anderson), Candice Kreiter, William Kreiter, fiance of Britny (Cartwright); one step-granddaughter: Renee Kreiter-Zink, wife of Cory; pseudo daughter: Kathy Campbell; and great-grandchildren: Donavin, Shyann Kirkpatrick, Kylee, Alexander, and twins, Matthew and Mason Mull.

In addition to her husbands and parents; Ethel was preceded in death by her son: Barry; grandsons: Bret Kirkpatrick and Jeremiah Mull; brothers: Paul and Webster; and sisters: Goldie Bellman, Myrtle Musser, and Margaret Lange.

Services were held Aug. 25 at Bible Fellowship Church, Ephrata, with Pastor Kevin Kirkpatrick officiating. Place of interment will be Memory Gardens, East Cocalico Township.

Allen W. Nonemaker, 93, formerly of Ephrata, chemical engineer in Liberia for Firestone

Allen W. Nonemaker, 93, of Harrisburg, formerly a longtime resident of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014 at Emeritus Assisted Living in Harrisburg.

Allen was born in Camp Hill, son of the late Frank and Ethel (Neff) Nonemaker. His wife of over 50 years, Melanie (Lange) Nonemaker, passed away Jan. 10, 1998.

He is survived by two children: Rita M. Oberman of Harrisburg, and Gary Nonemaker of Ephrata; and one brother: Frank Nonemaker of Milton.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, Allen held a degree in chemistry from Grove City College. He worked as a chemical engineer for Firestone in Liberia, West Africa, for 20 years before returning to the United States in 1976. Allen enjoyed traveling, playing music, making arts and crafts, reading, playing Bridge and Scrabble, and spending time with his best friend Buddy, his dog.

Services were held Aug. 22 at Paul L. Gravenor Home For Funerals, Ephrata, with Rev. Robert F. Stoudt officiating. Interment with Full Military Honors will be held at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at a later date.

Lyda Mae Moyer, 75, formerly of Denver, died Aug. 23, 2014, in Conestoga View, Lancaster.

Born in Brecknock Township, a daughter of Howard G. and Lyda Mae (Thompson) Beck, her husband, John E. Moyer, died Aug. 5, 1988.

She was a member of Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, Denver, and worked at Hope Hosiery Mills, Adamstown and Denver. Lyda enjoyed cooking, baking, crocheting, dancing, fishing and camping.

Surviving are her daughters: Diane L. (Ernest J.) Steffy, East Earl, Deborah L. (Keith A.) Craley, Reinholds, Deanna L. Moyer, and Dawn L. Brendle, both Denver; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters: Mary Jane Beck and Edith M. Newman, both Denver; and brothers: William H. (Dorothy) Beck, Denver and Harry R. (Deb) Beck, Mohnton.

Siblings Howard “Buster” Beck and Fern Gangaway predeceased her.

Services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 27 at 11 a.m. at Good Funeral Home, Reamstown with a viewing one hour prior to the service. She will be interred in Memory Gardens, Ephrata.
