Lillian E. Nardello, 94, member of OMPH, the Golden Years Club, A-town VFW Auxiliary

Lillian E. Nardello, 94, of Reading, and formerly of East Cocalico Township and Philadelphia, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2019, at St. Francis Home in Shillington.

Born in Philadelphia, Lillian was a daughter of the late Joseph and Ellen (Price) Rutkowski. She was the loving wife of the late Joseph J. Nardello, who passed away Aug. 26, 2004.

Lillian was also preceded in death by two daughters: Patricia Nardello Fox and Joan Nardello; and six siblings: Harry, Joseph, John, Richard, Catherine, and Ellen.

Lillian will be lovingly missed by her daughter: Lillian Chinnici; three grandchildren: Robert Heisse, Chrissy Longenecker, and John Fox; seven great-grandchildren; one sister: Marie Meloni; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lillian was a member of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church in Ephrata, , the Golden Years Club of the Ephrata Rec Center, and the Adamstown VFW Post 8795 Auxiliary.

A memorial mass was celebrated at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church on Dec. 9. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Thomas James Havens, 72, Ephrata, Drexel University retiree, guitarist, enjoyed golfing and reading

Thomas James Havens, 72, of Ephrata Township, passed away on Friday, Dec. 6, 2019, at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia.

He was born in Vestal, N.Y., to the late James Harvey and Mildred B. Havens, and was the beloved husband of Patricia (Cable) Havens, with whom he shared 43 years of marriage.

Tom was a life-long scholar. He was an alumnus of Cornell University, and was a huge supporter of their wrestling team. Tom also held a master’s degree in economics from SUNY Beinghamton, his MBA from Syracuse University, his degree in accounting from West Chester University, and his advanced business certificate from Drexel University. He lettered in football and wrestling at Cornell.

Tom was a very active man, constantly staying in good physical shape. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed reading, and furthering his guitar talent. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

Tom retired from Drexel University in June of this year and was looking forward to his next journey.

In addition to his wife, Tom is survived by a son: James Paul, husband of Caroline (Epler) Havens of Lititz; a daughter: Jennifer Lauren, wife of Nathan Andrew Sayre of Ephrata; four grandsons: Ellis Richard and Teal James Havens, Nolan Andrew and Warren Thomas Sayre; two sisters-in-law: Nancy C., wife of Frederick Riedel of Columbia, Md.; and Carol , wife of Richard Johnson of Rome, N.Y. He will be greatly missed by his extended family and friends.

A viewing will be held on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver. Funeral services will follow at 4 p.m., with Fred W. Riedel officiating.

Wilmer E. Martin, 90, founded Gem Ceramic Mold Co., Middle Creek COB member, father of two

Wilmer E. Martin, 90, of Denver, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Dec. 16, 2019.

Wilmer was the loving husband of the late Arlene F. (Bollinger) Martin, who went to be with the Lord on Feb. 2, 2014. They had celebrated 58 years of marriage on Oct. 2, 2013.

Wilmer was the founder and former owner/operator of Gem Ceramic Mold Company in Denver, and a member of Middle Creek Church of the Brethren.

He is survived by two sons: Shaun R. Martin, husband of Faye, of Denver; and Roger L. Martin, husband of Lisa, of Lititz; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister: Sara, wife of Abe Zeiset of Ephrata; a brother: Walter Martin, husband of Judy, of Ephrata; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife: Arlene, Wilmer was preceded in death by his parents: Walter and Martha (Eby) Martin; and four siblings: Clarence, Mary, Paul, and Earl.

Friends will be received at Middle Creek Church of the Brethren, 351 W. Middle Creek Road, Lititz, from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 20. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m., followed by interment in the adjoining church cemetery.

Roy A. Brubaker, 100, of Lititz, died peacefully Dec. 14 at the Landis Homes Retirement Community. For many years Roy was the owner and operator of Roy A. Brubaker Farm Equipment Company, Lititz; and served on the Lancaster Farm and Home Board. Roy was instrumental in forming the Rural Youth Organization. He was an active and faithful member of Lititz Mennonite Church. He founded the Lititz Rotary Travelogue film series. His son, Donald R., husband of Elaine Brubaker, lives in Ephrata.

Kevin D. Herr, 50, of Lititz, passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 13. Kevin had worked with his dad in the family business, Zimmerman & Herr Masonry, since he was 16. Kevin loved to hunt and fish, was an avid Steelers fan, and had been a member of the Reamstown Athletic Association and the Elstonville Sportsman’s Association. What he enjoyed most of all recently was being a grandfather. A son, Matthew S., married to Alicia Herr, lives in Ephrata.

Gerald L. “Jerry” Lefever, 72, of Columbia, passed away Dec. 10 at his residence. Jerry proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed fishing, watching football and horse races. A son, Gerald Lefever Jr., lives in Ephrata.

Alex Valentine, 31, of Lancaster, passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 3. Alex was a pure, selfless soul who always put others before himself. He always found a way to help others. He was filled with empathy, compassion, and love for anyone who entered his life. He loved performing card tricks and magic, watching movies, as well as listening to an eclectic genre of music. Alex was a dedicated employee for 11 years at the Hager Parking Lots. A cousin, Josh, lives in Ephrata.

Helen McWilliams, 89, Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Ephrata

Helen McWilliams, 89, of Lakeland, Fla., went home to be with her Lord on Friday, Dec. 13, 2019.

Formerly of Ephrata, she was the daughter of the late Anna and Amos Lindberg, and wife of the late Charles McWilliams.

She is survived by her three children: Michael Lindberg (Chris) of Tampa, Fla.; Marnita Strickler (Scott) of Lakeland, Fla.; and Corey McWilliams of Lakeland, Fla.; two grandchildren: Jennifer Giera (James) and Ryan Strickler; two great-grandchildren: Grace and Zachary Giera, all of Lakeland.; two sisters: Katherine Gensemer and Marion Dissinger, of Denver.

She was preceded in death by five siblings: John, Charles, Melvin, Joel and Ethel.

Lena W. Horst, 76, housekeeper, member of Bowmansville Mennonite Church

Lena W. Horst, 76, of East Earl, passed away on Friday, Dec. 13, 2019, at Fairmount Homes, Ephrata.

Born in East Earl, she was the daughter of the late Adam M. and Annie Weaver Horst.

Lena was a housekeeper and a member of the Bowmansville Mennonite Church, Groffdale Conference.

Surviving are five sisters: Mary, wife of Weaver Burkholder of Kutztown; Mabel, wife of John Newswanger of Roaring Springs; Irene Horst of East Earl; Ella Mae, wife of Jacob Zimmerman of Ephrata; and Ruth Horst of Wernersville; two brothers: Henry, husband of Grace Horst of Lititz; and James, husband of Jane Horst of Stevens; two sisters-in-law: Elizabeth Keller, widow of Adam Horst; and Eunice Rissler, widow of Lloyd Horst; and 34 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters: Nora and Anna Horst, three brothers: Paul Horst, Adam Horst, and Lloyd Horst; a sister-in-law: Mabel Horst; and a nephew: Lavon Newswanger.

The family would like to thank the staff of Fairmount Homes for the wonderful care they provided to Lena during the last year of her life.

Services were held Dec. 18 at Bowmansville Mennonite Church, Narvon, with Bishop Elam Zimmerman officiating. Interment was in the adjoining church cemetery.

Ernest W. Lindquist Jr., 56, Ephrata, enjoyed cars and dogs, family time; known for his great smile

Ernest W. Lindquist Jr., 56, of Ephrata, passed away on Dec. 12, 2019, at Lancaster General Hospital.

Born in Kittery, Maine, he was the son of Theresa (Basilio) Wenger and Ernest W. Lindquist Sr.

He loved dogs, enjoyed cars, and spending time with his family, especially his nieces and nephews. Ernest will be remembered for his silly sense of humor and his beautiful smile.

In addition to his parents, Ernest is survived by two daughters:: Amanda Lehman and Amber Arvelo; a grandson: Zachary Lehman; two granddaughters: Renee and Leila Arvelo; two sisters: Christina Groff and Debra Stoltzfus; stepsisters: Juli Boyd, June Robinson, and Judi Herr; and many nieces and nephews.

The family is thankful that our Lord is merciful and gracious. The family would also like to share gratitude towards the physicians at the Heart Group and the ICU staff at LGH for their care and compassion.

A celebration of life was held Dec. 17 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Lancaster.

William M. Kerr, 78, Ohio National Guard member, BCM missionary, and youth camp mentor

William M. Kerr, 78, of Ephrata, went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019, at Hospice and Community Care after an extended illness.

Born in Delaware, Ohio, he was a son of the late Charles and Mary (Metzger) Kerr. He was married for 57 years to his wife, Eileen (McCauley) Kerr.

Bill was a missionary from 1979 to 2011 with BCM International. He served as maintenance director for several camps in Pennsylvania and one in Tennessee; he enjoyed mentoring young people in maintenance at the camps and in his home. He also served in the Ohio National Guard for eight years.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Eileen; are four children: Tami Kerr of Ephrata, Cindi and Matt Brown of Stroudsburg, Paul and Kim Kerr of Stroudsburg, and Denise Kerr of Ephrata; seven grandchildren: Nathan, Adrian, Ryan, Cassandra, Sarah, Daniel, and Samuel; and a great-grandson: Zachary.

Funeral service will be held Thursday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. at Cornerstone Bible Church, 529 Lauschtown Road, Denver, PA 17517. Burial will be at Memory Gardens, on Wabash Road. Viewing will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Eckenroth Home for Funerals, 209 E. Main St., Terre Hill, and on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Mary S. Snyder, 88, devoted homemaker, seamstress, active IMC member, Re-Uzit volunteer

Mary S. Snyder, 88, of Ephrata, formerly of New Holland, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2019 at Fairmount Homes after a lengthy illness.

Born in East Earl, she was a daughter of the late Paul G. and Mary M. (Shirk) Horning. She was married 68 years on May 19 to John E. Snyder Jr.

Mary was a devoted mother, and homemaker, who contributed her talents at Hollinger’s Gift Shop and Yoder’s Restaurant & Buffet, and through tireless volunteer work at the New Holland Re-Uzit Shop. She was a member at Indiantown Mennonite Church where she was active in their sewing circle. Her hobbies included sewing bonnets, aprons and quilts as well as baking. She enjoyed and spent a great deal of time traveling with her family.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons: Richard, married to Kori (Zellers) Snyder of Berwyn; and Gary, married to Dana (Brookmyer) Snyder of Blue Ball; eight grandchildren: Peter, Nathan, Jordan, Emily, Reagan, Adam married to Kara (Horst) Snyder, Erin, and Cory married to Alyssa (Maxwell) Snyder; a great-granddaughter: Abigail; a brother: Paul S., married to Anna (Eberly) Horning of Ephrata; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are two sisters: Edna Zimmerman and Anna Martin; and a brother: Ivan Horning.

Services were held Dec. 16 at Indiantown Mennonite Church, Ephrata. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.

John Jacob Rutt, 80, founded Farmersville Furniture, Auction, was devoted to his family

John Jacob Rutt, 80, of Farmersville, passed from this life to his eternal home on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2019, at home, of an ongoing illness.

Born in Earl Township, he was a son of the late Jacob N. and Lizzie S. (Groff) Rutt. He was married 59 years on Oct. 1 to Esther E. (Zimmerman) Rutt.

John founded the Farmersville Furniture Store in 1965, the Farmersville Auction in 1972, and Rutt Grave Digging service in 1966. He retired as an auctioneer in 2005 and from grave digging in 1996.

He was a member of Martindale Mennonite Church. He served as a former board member of the Pennsylvania Relief Sale and the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association. He enjoyed his cabin in Mifflin County, auctions, hunting, traveling, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Surviving in addition to his wife are seven children: Faye (Roy) Reiff of Manheim; Jane (Daniel) Martin of Ashland, Ohio; Sandra (James) Martin of Ephrata; Larry (Beverly) Rutt of Ephrata; Lester (Doris) Rutt of Lititz; John, II (Andrea) Rutt of Ephrata; and Nelson (Christa) Rutt of Ephrata; 29 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; seven brothers and sisters: Mervin (Anna Mary) Rutt of Mount Joy, Elmer (Ruth) Rutt of New Holland, L. Lavern (Ruth) Rutt of Mount Joy, Mary Lou Nolt of Denver, Raymond (Marilyn) Rutt of Lititz, Anna Frances (Dale) Nissley of Middletown, and Curvin (Arlene) Rutt of Denver; and a sister-in-law: Irene Rutt.

Preceding him in death is a brother: Clarence Rutt.

Funeral services were held Dec. 16 at Martindale Mennonite Church, Ephrata. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

Martin E. Sweigart, 83, worked at RCA, enjoyed hunting, card games, was talkative and kind

Martin E. Sweigart, 83, of Germania, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2019, at his home.

Born Feb. 14, 1936, in Vinemont, he was a son of the late William and Stella (Reddinger) Sweigart. He was married to the former Annetta Eshelman, who preceded him in death in 2015.

Marty was employed by RCA in Lancaster for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing card games. All those that knew and loved Marty will fondly remember and miss his gift of gab and his loving and kind personality.

Surviving are two sons: Brian (Jeannette) Sweigart, Hilliard, Ohio; and Warren (Christina) Sweigart, Akron; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four sisters: Helen (Earl) Moyer, Barbara Hoke, Shirley Hartraft, and Linda Wonder; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Marty was predeceased by a son: Gary Sweigart; a daughter: Darlene Phillips; two brothers: Isaac and Charles Sweigart; and three sisters: Alberta Farmer, Emma Steinmetz and Jenny Knight.

Friends may call on Saturday, Dec. 21, at the Swamp Christian Fellowship Church, Reinholds, from 10 to 11 a.m. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Craig Frazier officiating.

Melvin M. Martzall, 87, Hahnstown UZ pastor, chaplain at WSM, Ephrata Manor volunteer

Rev. Melvin M. Martzall, 87, of Lititz, formerly of Ephrata, passed away Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019, at Maple Farms, Akron.

He was born in Lincoln to the late Harry and Elsie (Mohler) Martzall, and was the husband of the late Marian (Burkhart) Martzall, who passed away in 2005.

Melvin was a minister, serving at Haack’s UZ Church, Newmanstown, from 1972 to 1980; Hahnstown UZ Church, Ephrata, from 1982 to 1991; and lastly, he was a chaplain at Water Street Mission for 10 years. He also sold wholesale truck and auto parts to various dealers. He enjoyed volunteering at Ephrata Manor, reading and word puzzles.

He is survived by a daughter: Shirley Ann Martzall of Tucson, Ariz.; and a son: Donald E., husband of Elizabeth (Friant) Martzall of Reinholds; four grandchildren: Ben, Abby and Nate Martzall; and Stetson Tessay.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers: Nathan Martzall, Mark Martzall; and a sister: Martha Redcay.

A viewing will be held Thursday, Dec. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, 533 Walnut St., Denver. A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m., at the Chapel at Brethren Village, 3001 Lititz Pike, Lititz. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Deaths of Local Interest – Dec. 25, 2019

Rose Marie Hershey, 63, of Manheim, passed away peacefully Dec. 15 at Lancaster General Hospital. Rose owned and operated Shades of Rose in Manheim. She was a member of St. Richard’s Catholic Church, Manheim. Her interests included crocheting, reading, flower gardening, and scrapbooking. Her passion in life was her family, and she loved to organize family reunions. Her daughter, Kathleen, wife of Shaun Kaley, resides in Reinholds.

Joseph W. Leisner, 80, of Brecknock Township, passed away Dec. 15 at the Reading Hospital. He was a proud U.S. Marine veteran. Joseph was a police officer, serving the Philadelphia area for 25 years. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Mohnton. Joseph was a warm, caring, selfless person who loved his family, especially his grandsons, and will be sincerely missed by all. A daughter, Deborah A., wife of Keith R. Bortz, resides in Denver.

Alan D. Rothacker, of Lititz, was welcomed into the hands of the Lord on Dec. 17. He was a proud Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marines and much of his life was shaped by the Corps. He used his machine skills in industry, developing prototypes for high-resolution aeronautical reconnaissance photography and then miniaturization of invasive medical monitoring devices. Al was a trombone player who enjoyed the music and the camaraderie of the Moonlighters Big Band and the Lititz Community Band. He was active giving and getting care from his church community at Washington Avenue Bible Church in Ephrata.

Chester S. Enck, 83, Stevens, farmer, enjoyed nature, the outdoors, woodworking, travel

Chester S. Enck, 83, of Stevens, formerly of Lititz, passed away unexpectedly at home on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2019.

He was the youngest of 12 children born to the late Samuel and Salome (Shotzberger) Enck. Chester was the loving and devoted husband of the late Doris Jean (Bailey) Enck, with whom he shared 54 years of marriage at the time of her passing in 2009.

Chester was born on the family farm in Lexington, and worked as a self-employed farmer for most of his life. He always had a great love and appreciation for the outdoors and nature. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, and traveling. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Chester is survived by his children: Susan J. Hewes-Mendez, wife of Joe, of Lancaster; Alan L. Enck, husband of Catherine, of Akron; Steven L. Enck, husband of Theresa, of Denver; Dennis L. Enck, husband of Denise, of Lititz and Florida; Douglas E. Enck, husband of (Raeanne) of Ephrata; and Barbara A. Glick, wife of John, of Alaska. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister: J. Rose Wenger, wife of Earl.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by two sons: Glenn Enck and Chester S. Enck Jr; brothers: Samuel, Paul, Donald, James, Robert, Richard, William, Kenneth and Carl; and a sister: Betty Ohse.

Funeral services and burial at Hammer Creek Mennonite Cemetery will be held privately at the convenience of the family.

Ella Mae Shirk, 91, of New Enterprise, formerly of Ephrata, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2019, at her daughter’s residence.

She was born in Ephrata to the late John E. and Katie (Nolt) Zimmerman, and was wife of the late Henry M. Shirk who passed away in 2000.

A homemaker, she was a member of Groffdale Mennonite Church (Groffdale Conference).

Ella is survived by five children: Anna, wife of Norman Reiff of New Enterprise; Aaron, husband of Esther Shirk of Granton, Wisc.; Mary Ella, wife of Phares Weaver of Ephrata; Ervin, husband of Barbara Shirk of Hawkins, Wisc.; John Henry, husband of Emma Shirk of Manheim; 33 grandchildren; 131 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law: Eva Zimmerman, Ella Zimmerman, Vera Shirk, Lydia Clemmer; and a brother-in-law: Raymond Schrock.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter: Esther Shirk; two grandchildren; and five siblings: Nora, Isaac, Ivan, Norman and Aaron Zimmerman.

Services were held Dec. 23 at Groffdale Mennonite Church, Leola with Bishop Ammon Weaver officiating. Interment was in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

Sandra J. Maguire, 69, of Ephrata, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2019, at Rose City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Williamsburg to the late James and Catherine McNerlin, and was the wife of the late Lloyd A. Maguire, who passed away in 2005.

Sandra was a cashier for K-Mart. She was a graduate of Williamsburg High School, Blair County. She enjoyed reading, knitting and cross-stitch, and doing word finds.

Sandra is survived by a son: Calvin Gene Maguire of Ephrata; and a brother: Brad Bradford of Altoona.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a sister: Debbie McNerlin; and a half-brother: Robert Bradford.

Services were held Dec. 20 at Stradling Funeral Home, Ephrata.

Rufus Z. Martin of Denver, born Thursday, Sept, 13, 1934, passed away at age 85 on Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019, at his residence, surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife: Lydia M. (Hoover) Martin of Denver; and his children: Harvey Martin, husband of Irene, of Denver; Benjamin Martin, husband of Annie, of Stevens; Jesse Martin, husband of Esther, of Denver; Marion Hoover, wife of Eli, of Denver; Marcus Martin of Denver; Ammon Martin of Denver; Norman Martin of Denver; Ella Hoover, wife of Alvin, of Ephrata; Rufus Martin, of Denver; Willis Martin of Denver; and Jonas Martin of Louisville, Ky.; as well as 39 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

In addition, Mr. Martin is survived by his brothers and sisters: Paul, husband of Anna (Hoover) Martin; Amos, husband of Florence (Martin) Martin; Sarah, wife of Rufus Hoover; Anna, wife of David Hoover; Lizzie, wife of Rufus Nolt; Aaron, husband of Lizzie (Hoover) Martin; Harvey, husband of Lena (Hoover) Martin; and Luke, husband of Elva (Hoover) Martin.

Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents: Phares S. and Sarah (Zimmerman) Martin; his daughter: Lena Martin; two grandchildren; sisters: Lydia Hoover, Mary Hoover; and brothers: Ivan Martin, Phares Martin, Christian Martin, and Clarence Martin.

Services were held Dec. 20 at Reidenbach Church, New Holland. Burial was in the adjoining church cemetery.

Timothy V. Kashner Sr., 55, Warwick H.S. grad, Army vet, father of five, was a truck driver

Timothy V. Kashner Sr., 55, of Ephrata, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2019, at Hershey Medical Center.

He was the loving husband of Lisa Ann (Shank) Kashner and the son of Darlene Kashner Stoner.

Timothy is also survived by five children: Anthony Kashner, Timothy Kashner Jr., Amanda Kashner (companion Mitch DeHart), Derek Smith, and Jared Smith (companion Tia Bryson); six grandchildren: Braydon Kashner, Austin Smith, Chloe Lesher, Aaliyah Watson, Addelyn Smith, and Connor Smith; half-sister: Evelyn; Uncle Vernon and Aunt Barbara; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his stepfather: Carl Stoner; father: Benjamin Martin; grandmother: Lorraine Repass; and half-siblings: Sonny, Marlene, and Mike.

Tim was born in Lititz, and was a Warwick High School graduate. He served in the U.S. Army as a Cavalry Scout, and worked as a truck driver for various local trucking companies.

Memorial services, officiated by Pastor J. David Brubaker, were held at Gravenor Home for Funerals, Ephrata.

Marian E. Lines, 87, Ephrata native, RN at LGH and ECH, fun-loving, enjoyed reading

Marian E. Lines, 87, of Lancaster, died on Dec. 18, 2019, at the Long Home Community, where she had been a resident for five years.

She was born Nov. 27, 1932 in Ephrata, the daughter of the late Paul and Caroline (Sheaffer) Hauck.

Marian was educated as a nurse and had previously worked as an RN at Lancaster General and Ephrata hospitals. During her lifetime she enjoyed reading and doting on her grandchildren. She was fun-loving and quick to laugh.

She was the widow of Lloyd Lines, who died on Feb. 20, 2017; and she is survived by her sons: Douglas P. Burkholder of Lancaster; Daryl E. Burkholder, married to Susan (Miller), of Akron; and a daughter: Donna J. Burkholder of Lancaster; grandchildren: Brent Burkholder, Jillian Olney (Connor), Justine Joseph (Jonathan); a great-granddaughter: Hallie Joseph; and a brother: Paul Hauck (Helen), of Ephrata.

Preceding her in death are a sister: Jean Martin; and two brothers: Richard and Glen Hauck.

The family would like to thank the Long Home staff and residents for the special care and affection they showed Marian during her final days.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 27, at 11 a.m. at The Groffs Family Funeral and Cremation Service, 528 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Private interment will be held at a later date at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Alfred J. Spoo, 82, Record Express nature columnist, electrician, taxidermist, had strong faith

Alfred J. Spoo, 82, formerly of Rothsville, passed away at Moravian Manor on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2019.

He was born in Lancaster to the late Warren G. Spoo and Johanna (Jaggi) Spoo Lutz. Al’s wife, Arlene H. (Eshleman) Spoo, died in 2008.

He graduated from Rothsville High School and worked as a commercial construction electrician. Al retired to work part-time caring for others and began to focus on his passion for nature. He wrote and illustrated four books on shells, nature and butterflies, as well as being a columnist for the Lititz Record Express for 25 years.

Al’s many interests and passions included oil and watercolor painting, taxidermy and his collections of insects, shells, and mussels. A self-educated born naturalist, Al was a frequent guest of Jack Hubley on WGAL. His insect collection now resides at Millersville University, and his freshwater mussel collection is in the care of the North Museum of Nature and Science.

He was active in many clubs, including the Lancaster Butterfly and Entomological Club, Lancaster County Garden Club, Lititz Garden Club, and the Rothsville Historical Society.

Having a strong faith in God, Al enjoyed sharing the Bible with others by serving as a church deacon, usher and Sunday school teacher.

Al is survived by his six children: Mary L., wife of Richard Ulrich, Lititz; George A. Spoo, and life partner Kathy Horn, Mount Joy; David L. Spoo, husband of Jodie (Hager), Lititz; Joyce A., wife of Nicholas Eavenson, Lititz; Ruby A. Spoo, Mount Joy; and Joel A., Spoo, husband of Karen (Braun), Mountville; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and his life partner: Bernadine Alspach.

A viewing and celebration of Al’s life took place Monday, Dec. 23, at the Charles F. Snyder Jr. Funeral Home & Crematory, 3110 Lititz Pike, Lititz. Interment was in Rothsville United Zion Cemetery.
