Viola B. Redcay, 100, co-owned Philco Appliance, St. John’s member, enjoyed card clubs

Viola B. Redcay, of Manheim, formerly of Stevens, in her 100th year, passed away peacefully at home, on Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2019.

Viola was a daughter of the late Sherman F. and Ada Mae (Brown) Kessler, and the wife of Earl Redcay Jr., until his passing in 2009.

Viola was a co-owner of the Philco Appliance store in Denver for over 20 years. She was a former member of the Denver Woman’s Club, the Green Valley Country Club Ladies Auxiliary, and enjoyed card clubs. Viola was a member of St. John’s UCC church in Denver. She has happily resided with her granddaughter, Deanna, in Manheim for the past nine years. She loved her family most of all. Her vibrant smile and sweet presence will be missed.

Viola is survived by five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son: Floyd K. Sensenig; daughter: Jeanette Sensenig; eight siblings; and four grandchildren.

Services were held Nov. 11 at St. John’s UCC Church, Denver. Interment followed at Pleasant View Cemetery, Sinking Spring.

Jan Prins, 85, Navy vet, Gulf manager, Prins Photography owner, musician, traveler

Jan Prins, 85, of Reamstown, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

Born in The Netherlands, he was a son of the late Jacob and Katherina Prins. Jan and his wife, Hannah (Good) Prins, were to celebrate 65 years of marriage this month.

Jan moved to the U.S. in 1952, sponsored by his uncle, Dr. VanLoon. He worked for American Casualty Insurance Company in Reading, then worked as the manager of the Gulf station in Bowmansville. Jan turned his hobby of photography into a business, and in 1976 started Jan Prins Photography, where he established and operated a photo lab. He then worked 10 years at Yoder’s Market in the photo lab, and most recently worked part time at Weaver’s Market in Denver.

He was also proud to be a U.S. Navy veteran. He enjoyed music, anything jazzy, country, and organ. Self-taught, he played the piano, organ, and ukulele. Jan enjoyed traveling and took his family camping all over the U.S. and enjoyed many trips to Knoebels amusement park. He was a member of Salem E&R Church in Reamstown, and served on church council. Most of all he loved his family and cherished making memories with them.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children: Ken J. Prins (fiancée Michelle Ward) of Shrewsbury; and Chris L. Moore (Sean) of Hanover; two grandchildren: Ross J. Hall and Brooke L. Hall; one great-grandson: Eliot Vollmer; brother: Dick Prins; and two nephews: Eddie (Tineke) Prins and Roland (Ylona) Prins.

Jan was predeceased by sister-in-law: Kryna Prins.

A celebration of life will take place Saturday, Dec. 7 at 10:30 a.m. in Salem E & R Church, 12 E. Church St., Reamstown.

Deaths of Local Interest – Nov. 20, 2019

Margo Joy (Armstrong) Farneth, 59, of New Providence, died peacefully at home Nov. 14. She was a member of Rawlinsville UM Church for more than 50 years and a graduate of Lancaster General School of Nursing, and St. Joseph Hospital Nurse Anesthetist School. She worked at Ephrata Community Hospital for over 17 years.

Ethel M. Lusby, 99, of Narvon, went home to be with the Lord Nov. 12 at the Ephrata Community Hospital. Ethel was a devoted mother and grandmother. She looked forward every year when the family gathered for her birthday celebrations. She also enjoyed watching the Hallmark Channel with her daughter Marie. She was a member of the Maple Grove Mennonite Church. A son, Jim Lusby and wife Brenda, reside in Denver.

George Joseph Melasecca, 76, of Kirkwood, died unexpectedly Nov 11. George retired from PP&L where he worked as a power plant operator in Holtwood and was active with their retirement group. An avid car enthusiast, he was a member of many car clubs. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to national parks in their motor home. He was a member of Ephrata Community Church.

Anna Arlene Reiff, 83, of Fairmount Homes, formerly of Leola, went to be with the Lord Nov. 14. She was the loving wife of Paul G. Reiff. They observed 61 years of marriage in April. Mrs. Reiff was a sorter for the Blue Ball lingerie factory. A member of the Groffdale (Brick) Mennonite Church, she enjoyed cats; going to the mountains; and women’s Bible study.

Elizabeth W. Sauder, 103, formerly of New Holland, died Nov. 17 at Fairmount Homes. Elizabeth was a homemaker and a member of the New Holland Mennonite Church. She enjoyed quilting and was keenly interested in the Re-Uzit Shop of New Holland, serving as a board member for 25 years and also volunteered at the shop. A daughter, Sandra J. McNally, lives in Denver.

Dawn E. Hall, 73, CHS grad, USPS retiree, enjoyed Maine trips, grandkids’ school events

Dawn E. Hall, 73, of Manheim, formerly of Denver, passed away on Nov. 8, 2019, at Hershey Medical Center.

She was born on July 8, 1946, in Mohnton, daughter of Margaret and Victor Sweigart.

Dawn graduated from Cocalico High School. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 27 years. She and her husband loved to travel around Pennsylvania. Her favorite place was the state of Maine. She also loved attending her grandchildren’s school events and spending time with family and friends.

Surviving are her husband: Robert Hall; sons: Kevin Hall (Diane) of Denver, Christopher Hall (June) of Denver; sister: Evelyn Sweigart of Stevens; grandchildren: Cameron Hall, Collin Hall, of Stevens; Logan Ditzler, Conestoga, Kyrsten Hall, Denver; Gavin Herr, Denver; and a great-granddaughter: Catherine Davis (daughter of Logan), Conestoga.

She was predeceased by her parents.

To honor Dawn’s wishes there will be no services.

As an organ and tissue donor, Dawn’s wish is for donations to be made to the Gift of Life Transplant Foundation, 401 N. 3rd Street, Philadelphia, PA 19123.

Martha P. Zimmerman, 81, worked at Raub’s Subs at Green Dragon, enjoyed yard sales, camping

Martha P. Zimmerman, 81, of Ephrata, passed away Nov. 16, 2019 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Martha was born in Manheim to the late Samuel and Amelia (Pierce) Lehman. She was the wife of Martin M. Zimmerman, with whom she celebrated 57 years of marriage in October.

Martha was a member of Hinkletown Mennonite Church for most of her adult life. She enjoyed reading, gardening, family camping, collecting dolls, and going to and having yard sales.

She worked for many years at Raub’s Sub Stand at Green Dragon Market, and also at the former New Holland Apparel.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three children: Rose Zimmerman of Lancaster, Douglas (Rebecca) Zimmerman of Ephrata, and Todd (Damaris) Zimmerman of Ephrata; three grandchildren: Collin, Jessica, and Shawn; three sisters: Mary (Henry) Nolt, LaVerna (Robert) Hill, and Lorraine Martin; and a sister-in-law: Elizabeth Lehman.

Preceding her in death are three brothers: Paul, Samuel, and David Lehman; and two sisters: Esther Ginder, and Grace Fry.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. at Hinkletown Mennonite Church, 2031 Division Hwy., Ephrata. The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the church. Interment will be private at the Hinkletown Mennonite Cemetery.

Rebecca B. Zook, 73, owned Rebecca’s Discount Foods, house cleaner, Amish school teacher

Rebecca B. Zook, 73, Ephrata, formerly of Loysville, entered into rest on Friday, Nov. 15, 2019 at Hershey Medical Center.

Born in Bareville, she was the daughter of the late John S. and Malinda K. Beiler Zook.

A member of the Old Order Amish Church, she owned Rebecca’s Discount Foods in Loysville, and also did domestic cleaning and was an Amish school teacher.

Surviving are seven sisters and one brother: Katie, wife of the late Enos Beiler, Christiana; Mary Zook, with whom she resided; Malinda wife of David Zook, Ephrata; Mima, wife of Henry King of Pembroke, Ky.; Naomi, wife of Stephen Zook, Ephrata; David, husband of Rebecca Stoltzfus Zook, Bethel; Lizzie, wife of Benuel Stoltzfus, Pembroke, Ky.; Emma, wife of John Stoltzfus, Quarryville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A sister, Sadie Beiler, preceded her in death.

Services were held Nov. 18 at the home of Ephraim Zook.

Kenneth L. Hackman, 74, Denver, Hackman’s Truck Repair owner, enjoyed horseback riding

Kenneth L. Hackman, 74, of Denver, passed away at home on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2019.

He was the husband of Margaret A. “Peggy” Hess Hackman. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Lester and Helen Gilbert Hackman.

Kenneth had owned and operated Hackman’s Truck Repair in Lititz for 27 years. He enjoyed repairing trucks and chainsaws, and earlier in life enjoyed horseback riding.

Surviving besides his wife are two sons: Barry K., husband of Stacey Schott Hackman of Myerstown; and James H. Hackman of Newmanstown; two grandchildren: Samuel, husband of Jackie Hackman; and Chad Hackman; two great-grandchildren: Colton and Lea Hackman; two stepdaughters: Nanette, wife of Paul Strauss of Lititz; and Sherry Minnich of Birdsboro; two stepsons: Randall, husband of Marianne Smeltzer of Lancaster; and Paul Smeltzer of Saint Albans, W.Va.; seven step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; a sister: Shirley Farmer of Myerstown; and a brother: Robert, husband of Connie Hackman of Schoeneck.

James R. Kurtz, 89, Korea vet, James Wild, Car Quest worker, outdoorsman, Phils, UNC fan

James R. Kurtz, 89, of Ephrata, formerly of Akron, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019, at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital.

He was born in Akron to the late David P. and Anna Mary (Ravegum) Kurtz, and was the husband of Paula J. (Good) Kurtz, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage.

He was a member of Trinity E.C. Church, Lititz. James worked in auto body repair for Hunt Motors until the mid 80s, then in the parts department for James Wild Auto and later for Car Quest in Leola. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division, serving during the Korean War. He loved going to the mountains and was a member of the Wilkins Flat Hunting Club in Tioga County. He was also a baseball and basketball fan, especially of the Phillies and Tar Heels.

In addition to his wife, James is survived by a son: Brian S., husband of Kathryn “Kitty” (Swisher) Kurtz of Akron; and a daughter: Melinda S., wife of Dwayne Lynch of Mount Joy.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Jane Lauver.

Funeral services were held Nov. 19 at the Stradling Funeral Home, Akron, with Pastor Nathan Fry officiating. Interment will be private in the Rothsville Lutheran Cemetery.

Lillian A. Fry, 96, WWII vet, worked at Ward Gas, Akron Restaurant, library volunteer

Lillian A. Fry, 96, of Irwin, formerly of Akron, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, at Golden Heights Personal Care.

She was born in Hector, Ariz., to the late William and Mae Linton, and was the wife of the late Mahlon S. Fry.

A member of Grace E.C. Church, Akron, she was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in the WAVES during World War II, stationed in Washington, D.C.

In earlier years, Lillian worked for Ward Gas, Ephrata Children’s Shop, and Akron Restaurant & Gift Shop. She was an avid reader and enjoyed volunteering for Friends of the Ephrata Library. She was active in the Girls Scouts as a leader and with the council, was a member of the Golden Years Club and played pinochle and bridge in various card clubs. At age 82, she joined Curves.

Lillian is survived by a daughter: Kathleen D., wife of Joe Horochak of Trafford; three granddaughters: Chantel Detournay, Samantha Fecich, and Alexis Ondash; and five great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son: K. Michael Fry; and three siblings: Berneze Osman, Billie Jean Fernandez, and Kenneth Linton.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 11 a.m. to noon, at Grace EC Church, 101 N. Seventh St., Akron, followed by funeral services at noon with Pastor Leslie Cool officiating. Interment will take place in the Mt. Zion Cemetery.

Adam J. Roark, 42, EHS grad, Iraq vet, Star Wars, Lego collectibles dealer, avid skier

Adam J. Roark, 42, formerly of Ephrata, passed away at his home in Lock Haven on Friday, Nov. 8, 2019.

He was born in Lancaster on Nov. 19, 1976, the son of Douglas and Debra Fitzkee and James and Deborah Roark.

Adam was a 1995 graduate of Ephrata High School where he played baseball. Following graduation, he attended Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology before being called to active military duty. Adam served with honor in the U.S. Army, being deployed to Iraq four times before his honorable discharge in 2013.

He enjoyed collecting, buying and selling Star Wars memorabilia and exquisite Lego kits. He had a passion for snow skiing and was an avid sports fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, Flyers, 76ers, and Phillies. Adam also adored and spoiled his cats: Dusty, Dekes and Maya.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by six siblings: James, husband of Stephanie Roark, and their children, Brandon, Noah and Hunter; Josh Roark and Justine Ney, and their children, Taylor Roschel and Addalyn Roark; Lisa, wife of Tommy Ambrose, and their children, Gabrielle and Tyler Rankin, Alivia Roark; Jennifer Roark, and her children, Alexander James Roark, Chase Gabriel Abreu, and Olivia Hope Morgan; Ryan, husband of Valerie Roark, and their child, Kadyn; Jarred, husband of Michelle Roark, and their children, Charlotte Eichman, Jaclyn and Madeline Roark; his grandmother: Helen Boyer; and several aunts, uncles, cousins.

A celebration of life was held Nov. 16 at Real Life Church of God, East Petersburg. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Mary E. ‘Betty’ Weidman, 97, long-time Cocalico, Ephrata area teacher, avid community servant

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Weidman, 97, passed away Nov. 11, 2019, at Luther Acres Health Care Center in Lititz.

Daughter of the late Ray Y. and Elasta (Stover) Grube, she was born in Ephrata on Aug. 18, 1922. She resided in Akron from 1950 until 2007, when she moved into an apartment at Luther Acres. Her husband of 48 years, J. Carl Weidman, died in 1992.

Betty graduated from Ephrata High School in 1940, from Lebanon Valley College in 1943, and took additional courses at Franklin & Marshall College, Millersville University, and the Pennsylvania State University. Over a 30-plus year career as a teacher, she taught at the former Denver High School (Cocalico), Brownstown Elementary School (Conestoga Valley), and Akron Elementary School (Ephrata).

Memberships in professional associations included the NEA (National Education Association), PSEA (PA State Education Association), and PASR (PA Association of School Retirees). She served as president of the Ephrata Area Education Association in 1965-66.

Following her retirement, Betty spent many years serving as a volunteer for several community organizations. She was president of the Ephrata Cloister Associates from 1990 to 1992 and was named President Emeritus in 1994. At the Ephrata Community Hospital, she was a Red Cross Volunteer and a Hospice Bereavement Volunteer. Betty was also a volunteer tutor in the Ephrata Area School District. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Akron where she was a Sunday school teacher, council member, and lay reader.

Her memberships in local organizations included the Ephrata Community Hospital Auxiliary, Early Bird Walkers, Cloister Post #429, American Legion Auxiliary, the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley, Eastern Star Cloister Chapter #406 O.E.S., and the Golden Years Club of the Ephrata Recreation Center.

She is survived by a son: Dr. John C. Weidman II, husband of Dr. Carla (Fassnacht) Weidman of Lititz; and two grandchildren: J. Scott Weidman, husband of Lisa (Menendez) Weidman (parents of great-granddaughter, Lucia Isabella Weidman) of Philadelphia; and Rebecca M. Weidman, wife of Andrew Sapiente of Watertown, Mass.

Interment will be private in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. A service celebrating her life will be held at Luther Acres in January.

Francis Michael Gatti, 63, was asst. coach of the Ephrata H.S. hockey team, Akron Lions president

Francis Michael Gatti was born in Philadelphia on June 23, 1956. He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease) in May of 2016, and died on Nov. 12, 2019.

Frank attended Pierce College as an undergraduate and College of Science and Textiles in Philadelphia where he graduated with a degree in accounting.

In 1980 he began working at the Lancaster County Children and Youth Agency, then the Lancaster County Court House and spent most of his professional career as the chief financial officer for the Community Action Program of Lancaster County.

He was an avid Philadelphia Sports fan with his favorite team being the Philadelphia Phillies and enjoyed celebrating the 2008 World Series win by taking his daughter Frankie to the parade. One of his great thrills since his ALS diagnosis was to witness the Philadelphia Eagles win their first Super Bowl championship.

In his spare time he participated in community events including assistant coach of the Ephrata High School hockey team for over 10 years taking the team to two championships. He shared his favorite movie “Slapshot,” with the team and they would often recite verbatim their favorite lines during practices.

Frank was also a member of the Akron Lions Club where he served as the “Grand High Exalted Mystic Ruler,” or president. He also served as treasurer and committee chair for various events. In 2017-2018, he was the recipient of the prestigious Melvin Jones Award. Part of the Lions Club duties that Frank most enjoyed was providing monthly essay awards for winning entries to the children of Akron Elementary School.

Surviving beside his wife: Carmen; are three children: stepdaughter, Tiffany (Weachter), wife of Matthew Dormond, and mother of Nathan of Ardmore; stepdaughter, Alicia (Weachter), wife of Kevin Healey of Philadelphia; and Francesca Gatti of Philadelphia; beloved mother: Patricia Gatti (Dougherty); brother: Lawrence (Larry), husband of Christine of Holland, Pa.; sister: Annette DiMIchele; and brother: John, both of Philadelphia; six nieces; four nephews; and several grand-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father: Lawrence (Lardy) R. Gatti; and his sister: Kathryn (Kate) O’Connor.

A mass and memorial service will be held at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church, 320 Church Ave., Ephrata, on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 10 a.m. Immediately following the service, a visitation and luncheon will be held in the church’s Father Jackson Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Maebelle Ann Trostle, 89, Keystone Nitewear retiree, HoJo waitress, prolific seamstress, fair judge

Maebelle Ann Trostle passed away peacefully at Ephrata Manor on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019. She was 89.

Born in Ephrata, she was the daughter of Earl “Dewey” and Erla (Hornberger) Collingwood. She was married 66 years, last May 9, to Elmer Trostle Jr.

Maebelle graduated from Scotland School for Veteran’s Children in 1949. Although she retired from Keystone Nitewear, Reinholds, she worked at various jobs throughout her life including: Donecker’s; A.N. Wolf Shoe Company; Cinderella Knitting Mills; Vanity Fair; and was a waitress at Howard Johnson’s on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Schoeneck.

Sewing from the time she was a little girl, Maebelle was a seamstress to many, making clothes, doing alterations and tailoring numerous prom and wedding gowns for many a young lady. She and the late Jan Roseboro judged the sewing entries at the Denver Fair for many years.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Denver, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and was a member of the craft group.

Maebelle will be missed by her husband: Elmer; and their son: Dennis, of Denver. She was lovingly known as “Maw” to Nathan Spoo and Kaitlyn Rupp and their families. She is also survived by a sister: Jeanne V. Kramer of Stevens; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers: Clair and William Collingwood.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Ephrata Manor for their kind and thoughtful care of Maebelle.

Charles M. Shirk, 94, formerly of Terre Hill, died Nov. 21 at WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital. He was the owner of Charles M. Shirk Trucking, Inc. until 2006, a business his father started in 1935. He formerly served on the Terre Hill Borough Council and as fire chief of the Terre Hill Fire Company. The following relatives lives in Ephrata: daughter, Ann Louise, married to Harold “Bud” Kohl; daughter, Brenda, married to Ronald Weaver. His stepson, Jeff, married to Sara Shirk, lives in Akron. Stepdaughter, Linda, married to Donald Simmons, lives in Denver.

Paula B. Hankel, 76, of Lancaster, passed away Nov. 13 at Lancaster General Hospital. Paula was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Lancaster, where she served as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. She was a volunteer at the Mennonite Home since moving to Lancaster. Paula is survived by her husband of 52 years, Richard, and their son, Carl Hankel of Ephrata.

Roger D. Garman, 81, Denver, Sensenig Roofing retiree, enjoyed hunting, flower gardening

Roger D. Garman, 81, of Denver, passed away at home on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2019.

Roger was born in Ephrata, son of the late Lester and Mary (Dickersheid) Garman.

He was a longtime employee of Richard Sensenig Roofing of Ephrata, retiring from there at the age of 70. Most recently, Roger was a courtesy driver for Sinking Spring Toyota. He was an outdoorsman and loved hunting, camping, and growing and caring for flowers.

Roger’s children will always remember how he ended their conversations with “I love you.”

Roger is survived by his companion: Susan Sweigart; five children: Bonnie, wife of Jason Dutill; Donna, wife of Fred Esbenshade; Karen, wife of Randy Firestone; Deborah, wife of Thomas Boll; and Greg, husband of Ann Garman; stepdaughter: Erica Gonzalez; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; six siblings: Larry, Rose, Ruth Ann, Fred, Jeff, and Teresa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Roger was preceded in death by his wife: Arlene M. (Carvell) Garman; and siblings: Gloria, Mary Lou, Sue, Lloyd, Rodney, and Frank.

Funeral services officiated by Pastor Eugene Weaver will be held at Harvest Fellowship Church, 34 W. Church St., Stevens, on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends before the service from 9 to 11 a.m. Place of interment will be Memory Gardens, East Cocalico Township.

Harry G. Schuh II, 95, WWII vet, GE draftsman, played Minor League ball, was youth coach

Harry G. Schuh II, 95, of Denver, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2019, at Ephrata Manor.

He was born in Philadelphia to the late Harry and Florence (Deitz) Schuh, and was the husband of the late Valda M. (Singer) Schuh, who passed away in 2006.

He attended Mount Zion Baptist Church, Denver. He coached youth baseball, and was a Minor League Baseball player and a Phillies fan.

Harry served our country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as a draftsman for GE, Philadelphia.

Harry is survived by a son: Harry G., husband of Robin (McQueen) Schuh of Port Matilda; two daughters: Marilyn A., wife of Robert Beiswenger of Bowmansville; Janis E., wife of John Fischer of Quakertown; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held on Friday, Nov. 29, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the Pine Grove Church, 1194 Reading Road, Bowmansville. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m., with Pastor Jonathan Yoder officiating. Interment will take place in the Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, King of Prussia.

Kathryn “Kass” I. Miller, 85, of Denver, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2019, at Ephrata Manor.

She was born July 3, 1934 in East Cocalico Township to the late John F. and Dora L. (Trupe) Stuber, and was the wife of the late Charles R. Miller, who passed away January 2019.

Kass was a member of the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Denver. She was a 1952 graduate of the Denver High School and retired from the banking industry. She was a member of the Denver Women’s Club, Eastern Star Cloister Chapter #406 O.E.S., and was a minority inspector of elections. She enjoyed walking, gardening and cross stitching.

She is survived by a daughter: Kim L.Turner (Michael Hansen) of Bolingbrook, Ill.; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a sister: Alice M. Schannauer.

A memorial service was held Nov. 23 at Roseboro Stradling Funeral Home, Denver. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Martha M. Good, 90, of Ephrata, passed away on Monday, Nov. 18, 2019, at Lincoln Christian Home.

She was born in West Earl Township to the late Frank B. and Ada (Martin) Hoover, and was the wife of the late Luke N. Good, who passed away in 2015.

A homemaker, Martha was a member of Lime Rock Mennonite Church, Lititz.

Martha is survived by six children: Raymond H., husband of Dorothy E. (Seibel) Good of Lititz; Arlene H., wife of Irvin N. Zimmerman of Savannah, N.Y.; Ervin H., husband of Joyce (Quackenbos) Good of Lititz; Lois H., wife of Raymond S. Hurst of Denver; Lorraine H., wife of Wilmer S. Reiff of Annville; Kathryn H., wife of Harlan W. Hoover of Fleetwood; 25 grandchildren; 119 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a sister: Alma M. Burkholder of New Holland.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law: Erla S. (Reiff) Good; and a brother: Warren M. Hoover.

The family would like to extend a word of thanks to the staff at the Lincoln Christian Home and Hospice and Community Care for their kind, loving and compassionate care of their mother during her illness. It was greatly appreciated.

Services were held Nov. 22 at Lime Rock Mennonite Church, Lititz, with Bishop Melvin Martin officiating. Interment was in the adjoining church cemetery. Kindly omit flowers.

Mary A. Shober, 69, of Ephrata, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019, at Lancaster General Hospital- Penn Medicine.

She was born in Schoeneck to the late Lillian (Matthews) Randler, and was the wife of the late Randall L. Shober, who passed away in 2011.

Mary is survived by two daughters: Michelle Shober of Ephrata, Tammy Graybill of Pittsburgh; five grandchildren: Hailee, Austin, Blake, Jackson, Dylan; and five siblings: Gene Randler, Tim Randler, Paul Randler, Sandy Trimble, and Gwen Lynne Boyer.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter: Heidi Diskin.

Services were held Nov. 25 at Peace United Church of Christ, Denver, with Pastor Betsy Bruaw officiating. Interment will be private.

Bill (John) Shaw, 87, Korea vet, missionary, Washington Ave. Bible, Friendship Community pastor

Pastor Bill (John) Shaw, 87, of Akron, passed on to his heavenly home on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2019, at home under hospice care.

Originally from Wisconsin and Iowa, he was the son of the late John and Bonita Shaw.

He was a U.S. Navy and Air Force veteran, serving as a radarman during the Korean War. He graduated from Columbia Bible College, where he met his wife Barbara Rupp. They celebrated 58 years of marriage this year.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children: Colleen (Kevin) Walters of Niger, Africa; Amy (Eric) Hurley of Jacksonville, N.C.; Daniel (Esther) Shaw of Kenya, Africa and Akron; Marci (Stewart) Stevens of Richville, N.Y.; and Heidi (Raymond) Rutter of Akron.

Bill had a unique sense of humor enjoyed by his 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. The little ones were all his “punky-wunks” or “sweetypies.” His humor was also appreciated by many friends, whom he ministered to and loved all over the world. One of his students called Bill “the oldest teenager he knew.”

His surviving sister, Martha Shaw, lives in Clarksville, Iowa. He was predeceased by three additional sisters: Myrtle (Roy) Alexander, Virginia (Vic) Busse and Dorothy Solomon.

Bill loved being a pastor for over 50 years. His ministries included, Pastor of Effie Rose Mission in Sumter, S.C.; Mt. Olive Bible Church in Opp, Ala.; in Liberty, he served under Rural Home Missions and with New Tribe Mission, working with the Catuquina Indians in the Amazon area of Brazil. (His family’s “faith adventure” is documented in their book “Journey to the Amazon.”) He also served at 1st Congregational Church in Brier Hill, N.Y.; on staff at Sacandaga Bible Conference in Broadalbin, N.Y.; pastor of Crown Point Bible Church in New York; and at a rehab for addicts at TLC in West Park, N.Y.

Locally, he was pastor for 10 years at Washington Ave. Bible Church, Ephrata. He also served for seven years with Friendship Community, where he retired.

Bill was known to be a man of faith, love and prayer.

Services were held Nov. 26 at Bible Baptist Church, Akron, with Pastor Steve Hollinger officiating. Interment will be private at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
