Erv S. Hoover, 71, Akron Nursery owner, area civic leader

Erv S. Hoover, 71, of Akron went home to be with the Lord Saturday, July 5, 2014 after a brief battle with cancer.

He was married 15 years on June 25, to Joyce A. Martin. Born on March 29, 1943 in Earl Township, he was the son of the late Franklin and Magdalena Z. (Sensenig) Hoover.

Erv was a member of the Ephrata Church of the Brethren for more than 40 years. He also attended Neffsville Mennonite Church for a number of years. Erv was the founder, owner and current president of the Akron Nursery. He was a member and past president of the Akron Lions Club, designing and assisting in the building of the gazebo at the Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park during his presidency. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Ephrata Blue Lodge #665 F.&A.M. and Lancaster Lodge of Perfection. Erv was a member of and past exalted ruler of the Ephrata Lodge B.P.O. Elks #1933. He was the past commodore of the Rajah Yacht Club. Erv enjoyed traveling and spending time at the mountains and the shore. He enjoyed restoring antique Oliver tractors and was an avid Harley rider.

In addition to his wife, Joyce; he is survived by his children: Tammy, wife of Kevin Campbell of Lancaster, Todd Everett, partner of Jack Yohn of Lancaster, Kelsey Martin of Lititz, and Amanda Martin of Akron. He is also survived by five grandchildren: and one great-granddaughter. Also surviving are his mother-in-law: Arlene K. Martin of New Holland; and his beloved puppy: Isabelle. Erv is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Arlene Martin of Terre Hill, Franklin N, married to Esther (Garman) Hoover of New Holland, Mary Eberly of Blair County, and John Aaron, married to Anna (Zimmerman) Hoover of Denver.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: David and LeRoy.

Services were held July 9 at Ephrata Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Rob Eshelman and Rev. Dr. Linford King officiating. Interment was private at the convenience of the family in Witness Park.
