Ronald E. Reese, 76, of Akron, passed away peacefully with his son at his side on Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy.
He was born in Reamstown to the late Octavius “Bloogie” Reese and his wife, Dorothy. He was married to Doris (Dohner) Reese. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in June.
Ron was an excellent athlete, excelling in baseball and softball during his high school years and on into his late 30s as well. He later took that passion and began coaching Little League and Legion baseball teams and always pushed his players to give their all on the field.
Ron was extremely proud to serve his country as a United States Marine and the discipline he found there was carried through his entire life as a positive role model. He exemplified the three core values of the Marine Corps, honor, courage, and commitment. Ron served as an Akron police officer for a short time, volunteered with Akron Fire Company, and later took on a variety of civic duties in Akron.
He was a radio personality at WGSA/WIOV and he also did sports commentary for high school football and basketball games.
Ron had many great traits and was a loyal friend to many, from family, to work, to his dedicated group of golfing buddies who spent countless hours enjoying each others company on the course and off.
His pleasant demeanor made him a friend to everyone. His work ethic was admired by many and working 80-hour weeks at Good’s Disposal as a driver was a common thing for him. He often would go the extra mile for Good’s customers and their pets, bringing treats for every dog who eagerly awaited his arrival each week. A favorite way to relax was quiet time in his garden watching birds.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son: Donald, husband of Debra (Trout) Reese; his beloved granddaughter: Toriana Reese, who was his pride and joy, whom he loved to spoil. He always looked forward to spending time with her. He is also survived by a sister; Shelby, wife of Paul Mohler; and a brother, David Reese.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother: Thomas Reese.
Visitation will occur on Friday, Oct. 5, from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by memorial service at 10 a.m. at Akron Church of the Brethren, 613 Main St., Akron. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
