Frederick D. Pontz III, 81, of Ephrata, passed away Sunday, Nov. 29, 2015, at his residence.

He was born in Akron to the late Frederick D. and Rhoda (Henry) Pontz Jr.

Fred enjoyed music all of his life and as a young boy routinely played “Taps” on his trumpet for fallen World War II servicemen during their funerals. He served his country honorably in the Counter Intelligence Corps of the U.S. Army after World War II. He was stationed in post-war Japan. In his early adult life he was active in the local Masonic Lodge where he played trombone in the string band.

Fred spent most of his business career in the local poultry industry working in sales and marketing. Over the years he was active in local bowling leagues and enjoyed golf. He also enjoyed motorcycling. In his later life his music passion moved him to the organ. His father passed on to him his love of animals, which he in turn passed on to his children. The Pontz family had strong ties to local humane leagues and animal shelters.

Frederick is survived by son: Mark, husband of Jayne Pontz; two daughters: Leslie A. Pontz of Fort Meade, Md.; Kimberly L., wife of Jeff McDonnell; five grandchildren: Luke A. Pontz, Paul A. Pontz, Jordan McDonnell, Lisa McDonnell, Amber McDonnell; one great-granddaughter: Lallie Joy McDonell.

Services and interment will be private.

Memorial contributions in Frederick’s memory may be made to the Lancaster Humane League, 2195 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, PA 17602.

Arrangements by Stradling Funeral Homes Inc., Akron/Ephrata. Online condolences can be given at stradlingfuneralhome.com.
